JAMESTOWN AREA

JAMESTOWN — More than
61,000 votes were cast for individuals, businesses and others in the 15th annual Best of the Jamestown Area awards, sponsored by The Jamestown Sun.
The number of votes cast shows the great interest in the annual awards, said Rob Keller, publisher and advertising director of The Jamestown Sun.
“Thank you to the community and the businesses for supporting the publication,” he said.
People placed their nominations for
the awards in October on The Jamestown Sun’s website at www.jamestownsun.com and through The Jamestown Sun print edition. More than 5,100 nominations were received. Final voting for the winners was conducted in November.
In both rounds of voting, physical votes in the newspaper were combined with electronic votes on www.jamestownsun.com.
Keller congratulated those who placed in the top 3 for Best of the Jamestown Area, and thanked the businesses that won in
various categories for expressing their appreciation for their support in this publication. He also thanked those who took the time to vote.
Jamestown Sun staff tabulated the
vote. Winning businesses receive a certificate identifying them as a top votegetter in the Best of the Jamestown Area.
Those certificates can be seen displayed at many businesses in the community.
This year’s Best of the Jamestown Area includes businesses and individuals who have been honored before along with new winners. This publication spotlights those who have won the praise of the general public in the Jamestown area.
Keller said the Best of the Jamestown Area is a tradition that will continue.
“This is our 15th year and every year it grows in popularity,” he said. “We’ll continue to do our part to make sure the results are accurate and the businesses are recognized appropriately.”

JAMESTOWN — R.M. Stoudt was chosen the Best Car Dealership by voters in the Best of the Jamestown Area readers’ choice awards.
It also received nine other awards. It earned third place in Best Auto Service/ Repair, Best Auto Detailing and Best Body Shop. Michael Lautt was voted third in Best Diesel Mechanic and Best Auto Technician. Brian Bertsch and Dean Haas were voted second and third, respectively, in Best Salesperson Auto. And Quick Lane earned second in Best Oil Change and third in Best Tire Shop.
Clint Boom, general manager of R.M. Stoudt, said the business is honored to have been chosen Best Car Dealership.
“I think it’s a reflection of many years and many generations of dedication to serving the community and there are people to thank all throughout the community of Jamestown,” he said. “There are many, many hands involved in being the best and being voted the best, and we appreciate both our customers and the people that helped us earn that award.”
Boom says the dealership handles all aspects of car ownership including repair, body work, parts, maintenance and more, as well as rentals.
“There are so many departments that are required,” he said. “… We can finance your car, we can sell you a new one. Basically, if it’s something to do with a car, we have it in one building. So we’re the all-aspects-under-one-roof type of place.”
He said the staff makes that happen.
“I think our dedication to providing good service shines through. Not every person has had a perfect experience, but we certainly try to (help them have a good experience),” he said. “In all

Best Auto Service/Repair, Best Auto Detailing, Best Body Shop awards
“The service repair and body shop is all very similar processes,” Boom said. “They require able-bodied technicians with experience. They require a quality parts department. They require customer service representatives. Just basically with scheduling, communication, picking up and dropping off. We’ve got a lot of hands in those and I think our biggest strength of those two categories would be strength in numbers.”
He said R.M. Stoudt has a building specifically for auto detailing that was constructed four years ago.
“When you want to continue to grow, those are the types of things that need to happen in order for that growth to take place,” he said. “And one of the things that the Stoudt family isn’t afraid of is making those changes and changes are tough, but we’re not afraid of them. If we need to grow in a place, we just do it.
“Growth is expensive and frustrating, but it’s a lot easier when you can see the result of the effort and this is certainly the evidence,” Boom said.
Best Auto Technician and Best Diesel Mechanic - Michael Lautt (third)
Boom praised Lautt’s work that resonated with voters.
“Michael has recently passed the 15-year employment mark here at R.M. Stoudt,” he said. “He’s grown from fresh out of school to a full-blown specialist in his field, and his success is not just showing up but showing up to be the
best. He definitely is someone that you can rely on (for) a good diagnosis of an issue …. that is complex. We feel that Mike has 30 years experience packed into 15 years of time.”
Best Salesperson Auto - Brian Bertsch (second), Dean Haas (third)
“One of the hardest things to bring to work every day is energy, and those two guys have found a way to bring it every single day that they show up,” Boom said. “And their energy is attractive to someone that needs a lot of things accomplished in order to buy a car. A car is the second-biggest purchase in our lives and you need a professional that can help you through that.”
Quick Lane awards
“Quick Lane is one of the growth items that we made,” Boom said. “We constructed our own maintenance building approximately 10 years ago. We built the Quick Lane because maintenance has been such a large need, large demand item, and we went from two stalls to eight stalls and we’ve never really been to the point where we’re comfortable.”
He said Quick Lane staff take care of 30 to 45 appointments a day “and that takes a lot of moving parts as well — lot of people, lot of equipment. If we can maintain your vehicle, chances are we can repair your vehicle. If we can repair your vehicle, chances are we’re good enough to purchase a vehicle from or parts from. And so it’s all connected.”
He said the Best Car Dealership award is “a very big honor and I think the most important thing for us is it drives us. Being honored with this award is a driver to be better.
“In this world of surveys, we don’t often get praises in our reviews,” he said. “We often only see reviews when someone’s unhappy. So it is a huge thank you to everyone that voted and took the time to do that. It’s a nice offset to the standard.”

The Jamestown Sun
JAMESTOWN — The Two Rivers Activity Center received three awards in the Best of the Jamestown Area.
TRAC was voted the Best Health and Fitness Club and Best Child Care Services.
Brooke Johnson was also voted the Best Personal Trainer.
“The community sees us as one of the top facilities,” said Boya Quichocho, TRAC facility manager.
He said TRAC staff appreciates all the support it gets from its members.
“We have a good time providing a quality product for them and obviously our guests are important too that come in for day passes,” he said.
Quichocho said the staff takes care of the exercise equipment and tries to provide as many services as it can.
“Personally, I believe we have the right people in the right places,” he said.
TRAC is a community recreation center for all ages designed to support health and wellness in Jamestown, according to its website. TRAC is owned and
operated by the Jamestown Parks and Recreation District.
Quichocho said TRAC is a “one-stop shop” for health and fitness and includes a variety of amenities. TRAC has an indoor swimming pool, bubble facility, a large gymnasium and fitness equipment along with outdoor pickleball courts and the Meidinger Splash Park.
“ … That is attractive to maybe the diverse community that we have because everyone kind of wants variety,” he said.
TRAC also offers group fitness classes. Quichocho said TRAC has over 30 group fitness classes per week.
Johnson said TRAC offers dance, weight lifting and cycling classes and is always looking for new ideas for more classes.
“We have a variety … and we try to offer similar formats at different times a day so that we can accommodate all kinds of lifestyles,” Quichocho said.
TRAC has 122 employees with most being part time.
“We rely a lot on our local schools for

employment for the part-time positions and then we’ve been lucky enough to have a full team the last few months of full-time staff,” Quichocho said.
He said some employees work a few hours during the week doing fitness classes or working wellness shifts.
TRAC is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Johnson said she is humbled about being voted the Best Personal Trainer and is excited to help more people on their fitness journeys. TRAC has four personal trainers, and Johnson said being voted as Best Personal Trainer is a team award.
“I feel like it’s our award because there’s some other personal trainers here that are just fabulous, and they’re very understanding, and they’re great at what they do,” she said.
Quichocho said being a personal trainer is more about who the individual is as a person and not necessarily about what he or she knows.
“Brooke is a great people person and has developed great relationships with
Quichocho said the OnTRAC Learning Center’s staff cares about the growth and development of its children.
“Our staff there are very passionate about what they do,” he said. “They all have that passion to develop children and keep them in the right direction to be ready for school.”
He said the OnTRAC Learning Center is semi-curriculum based and has classrooms for children ages 3-5.
“We provide somewhat of a standardized curriculum that we’re supposed to follow so that we know they’re getting the right tools and skills needed to go to kindergarten,” he said.
Quichocho said TRAC also has beforeand after-school programs where staff provides care for children up to age 12.
her clients,” Quichocho said. “I think that’s a lot to do with it. … People trust her and have a good time while they’re here.”
Johnson said personal training is customized for each client. She said everyone has different goals.
“It starts with a consultation and we just kind of get to know them, figuring out what their goals are, where their physical ability is, and we design a program that’s for them,” she said.
Johnson said it’s important for people to have realistic expectations and goals. She said she is good with people and can relate with her clients through their fitness journeys.
“I understand that not all of us are training for the Olympics,” she said.
She said she makes sure her clients are having fun through their fitness journeys. She said fitness should be fun and many people give up on their fitness journeys because they’re not having fun.
“We just keep those kids active, having fun after a long day of school, which is another perk for us having this big facility,” he said.
Johnson said TRAC also has its Adventure Space, an on-site drop-in care that is available in the morning and afternoon for its members or guests with a day pass. TRAC staff provides care for children ages 6 weeks and older so members and guests can use the facility.
“The hours are kind of designed to work around the fitness classes,” Johnson said.

The Jamestown Sun
JAMESTOWN – For Barbara “Babbs” and Joel Onsurez, their business is all about real coffee, made-from-scratch food and giving patrons more than just a place to sit.
That dedication to customers has paid off, with Babb’s Coffee House winning 10 awards in the Best of the Jamestown Area contest.
“We really appreciate people supporting it and loving what we do,” Babbs Onsurez said. “I say I put love in everything. I say you can tell when people don’t because if someone’s grumpy and they’re making a drink, it’s just not good. But when you put that love and you care about what you do, it kind of goes into the taste of your food and drink too, I’d say.”
Babb’s Coffee House received first in Best Coffee Shop and Best Downtown Business. It earned second-place awards for Best Bakery, Best Dessert and Best Soup. Third-place awards were Best Breakfast, Best Restaurant, Best Lunch, Best Takeout and Best Sandwich or Sub.
Onsurez is gratified the coffee house was voted Best Coffee Shop. She said their customers include people from around North Dakota, the U.S. and the world.
Those customers tell them, “‘This is the best coffee shop. We travel all over and we’re so excited we found this place,’” Onsurez said.
At Babb’s Coffee House, you won’t find the typical coffee that comes out of a can or a jar.
“Our coffee beans are roasted fresh every couple weeks,” she said. “We ship them in from the Seattle area, so those are always fresh roasted.”
She said it’s important to have quality coffee and the right environment for people to enjoy beverages and food. Babb’s Coffee House provides a cozy atmosphere featuring warm colors, stained glass from Seattle and a space needle in a building that’s larger than people usually find in a coffee house, Onsurez said.
“Usually, you have this tiny space and people all lined up on their laptops,
taking up all the tables and you have nowhere to sit,” she said. “So here it’s nice because there’s different seating areas – there’s … a little sofa area like you have in your living room and then there’s a table and then there’s some booths.”
She said many chains are serving up powdered coffee these days, but Babb’s Coffee House takes pride in serving “real coffee” and keeping “the true art of coffee alive.”
At Babb’s Coffee House, there’s no shortage of beverage choices. In addition to coffees, it offers iced and hot espresso drinks, hot or frozen apple cider, hot chocolate (with favorite flavor), Arnold Palmers, fruit smoothies and bubble, loose leaf and iced teas. They use highquality syrups sweetened with pure cane sugar and “good chocolate,” such as Ghiradelli, she said. If there’s whipped cream on top, it’s homemade.
She said people comment that there are so many choices.
“And I say, I go so many places and there’s no choices, so we like to give you all the yummy choices,” she said.
Babb’s Coffee House serves up breakfast including breakfast quesadillas, sandwiches, oatmeal and homemade quiche, rolls and waffle stacks. Lunch offerings include soups, salads, wraps and sandwiches, which are made with homemade breads and bagels, with gluten-free options.
“I do all my homemade soup, too,” Babbs says, including lasagna, zucchini, knefla and chicken jalapeno popper, plus chili. There are gluten-free soup options as well.
Bakery items are made from scratch, and Onsurez likes to try new recipes with seasonal offerings. Babb’s Coffee House offers such treats as cookies, scones, rolls, baklava, apple crisp and cheesecake.
We switch it up with different things,” she said. “I’m constantly changing up stuff and creating new recipes. Cake pops, macarons.”
Onsurez, who grew up in Carrington, North Dakota, said she has always loved baking and cooking, and her mother would purchase ingredients for what she wanted to make when she was young.
“There’s a photo of me baking when I was … 6, my first cake, it’s in the coffee shop,” she said.
It would be years later, while living in Washington state, that she found her passion for coffee.
“I absolutely loved it,” she said. “And so I said, ‘One day, I’m going to open a coffee shop’ and everyone told me it was a pipe dream, it would never happen.”
Babb’s Coffee House opened in Jamestown in 2007, after their first location opened in 2002 in Fargo. They no longer own the Fargo location, which still uses their recipes and products.
Onsurez said the couple invested their own money into the Jamestown community and made their business what it is.
Babb’s Coffee House, located at 100 1st Ave. South, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They deliver until 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and until noon Thursday. Online ordering is also available at babbscoffeehouse.com or through the Babb’s Coffee House app. People can order for pickup, delivery or they can bring orders outside to waiting vehicles, she said, which is faster than drive-thru service. They can also order through those methods for dine-in.
Babb’s Coffee House has space for larger groups, with a conference room that can accommodate 40-60 people. They offer a catering menu, which is different than the restaurant menu, she said.
Babb’s Coffee House also sells merchandise that Onsurez calls “some fun little things that are unique and different” including essential oils, handmade coffee mugs, Bill Nybo art figurines, jewelry and shirts.
Onsurez is grateful so many people voted for them in the Best of the Jamestown Area contest.
“It’s awesome. It’s great,” she said. “It makes me feel that people are enjoying what we’re making and that they love the food and the coffee and the soup. It’s so exciting. Thank you so much, everybody. It makes the work worth the effort because … you put a lot of hard work into it and you’re like, is it worth it some days and yes, it looks like it is.”

JAMESTOWN — Cork & Barrel Liquors was once again voted the Best Liquor Store in the Best of the Jamestown Area.
Cork & Barrel Owner Scott Anderson said the store has a great location and the supply is “second to none.”
“We carry a lot of stuff and a lot of special things and a lot of unique things,” Anderson said. “We pretty much have anything and everything you might need for any type of party or any type of drinks.”
Cork & Barrel also has a full-sized humidor for fresh cigars.
“Interstate traffic is pretty big up here so we do get a lot of that and people come in and they ask for the cigars,” he said. “They get to the humidor pretty regularly.”
He said new products are always coming out and Cork & Barrel brings in as much of those it can.
“If it’s something that’s up and coming and sometimes it takes a while for Jamestown to get things or to catch on to stuff that’s going on in Minneapolis or Fargo or the big cities,
but we are usually ahead of the game on that,” Anderson said.
He said Cork & Barrel holds sampling events throughout the year and has other promotions to get people to try different items.
Anderson said his employees have good knowledge of the business and know the products that Cork & Barrel carries. He said the employees take care of the customers as best as they can.
“When we do hire someone new, we train them pretty good,” he said. “We have them come in and help do freight and teach them where the products go and explain the products. They take pride in what they are doing. They know a lot of stuff that we are selling, which is great.”
Cork & Barrel has 12 to 15 employees, including two to three who are full time.
Anderson also said Cork & Barrel is also one of the sponsors of the Jamestown Rural Fire Department and Knights of Columbus 16th annual Fishing Tournament & Raffle. He said Cork & Barrel sells many raffle tickets for the event.

JAMESTOWN — Dairy Queen was voted Best Dessert and Best Drive-Thru in the Best of the Jamestown Area.
Dairy Queen has its own signature formula for its soft serve, said Tricia Seckerson, who owns the business with her husband, Kelly.
“We make all of our items here fresh,” she said. “We make our dilly bars fresh, our cakes.”
Dairy Queen’s website says its soft serve does not qualify to be called ice cream because the minimum butterfat content must be 10% to be categorized as ice cream. Dairy Queen’s soft serve only has 5% butterfat content.
Seckerson said the Dairy Queen in Jamestown is the busiest one in the entire state and more product gets moved, resulting in bettertasting food including its soft serve.
“You are breaking down your machines more,” she said. You are replacing your blades on your machines more. There is a whole science to it. If something is not good, something has not been maintained.”
She said the soft-serve machine in Jamestown is regularly maintained.
Seckerson said the staff of 34 employees in Jamestown is “amazing.”
“We have staff that have been here for decades and that really truly believe in the family of Dairy Queen,” she said. “We like to just make people happy and everybody knows customers by their names, by exactly what they order. … Being family-owned, I feel it has a different environment than just somebody who isn’t engaged in the process.”

JAMESTOWN — Dr. Dawn Entzminger was voted the Best Veterinarian by voters in the Best of the Jamestown Area.
“It’s a team approach,” said Entzminger, who owns Dr. Dawn’s Pet Stop in Jamestown. “It’s definitely an honor.”
She said she definitely could not do everything at Dr. Dawn’s Pet Stop without the help of her staff of seven full-time and five part-time employees.
“They are the glue that holds this place together,” she said. “They are the ones that are behind the scenes getting it all done.”
Entzminger said she and her staff
performed over 80 surgeries during Thanksgiving week when the Pet Stop runs its annual weeklong special on neutering cats.
Veterinarian services at the Pet Stop include animal dentistry, pet medicine, laser therapy, nail trims, exams, vaccinations, surgeries, X-rays and treatment for ear mites, fleas and ticks.
Entzminger said the Pet Stop also works with pregnant dogs and cats.
“We take care of them from birth and their whole lives,” she said.
Entzminger said the Pet Stop also sees a lot of exotic animals including peacocks, hedgehogs and rats.
She said the Pet Stop will do its best to figure out treatments for pets or any animals.
