Gerald Block US Army 1941-1944

Gerald was stationed in Manila, Philippine Islands when the first bombs of WWII hit Nichols Field around 1:00 PM on December 8, 1941. It was Sunday December 7 in Washington and Pearl Harbor because the International Date Line bisects the Pacific west of Hawaii.

The valiant defense of the Philippines against overwhelming odds is one the greatest stories in military history. These men were considered expendable but with their courage and sacrifice they resisted the Japanese for almost four months giving McArthur time to get to Australia to formulate plans for Japan’s final defeat. On April7, 1941 Major General Edward King surrendered seventy-five thousand men to the Japanese; the largest military surrender in the history of the United States armed forces.

Gerald was captured in the field and on April 9, 1941 was forced into the infamous Bataan Death March. He survived several POW camps eventually being sent to Nichols Field/Pasay which was a hard labor camp. He and 1800 other POW’s were loaded onto the hell ship Arisan Maru for evacuation to Japan as slave labor. The unmarked ship was sunk by the USS Shark.

There were nine survivors. It was the largest loss of American lives in a single disaster at sea, the Titanic lost 1500 lives.

He posthumously received the POW Medal, Purple Heart, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal w/Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, Honorable Service WWII Lapel Button, Philippine Defense Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Philippine Independence Medal and the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge.

During his time in the army, he was promoted three times within a two year time span from private to sergeant. He was in the Anti-aircraft 19 Millimeter Weapons Division. He was to be deployed to Korea three different times, but each time the deployment was cancelled. He eventually was sent to Germany for one year.

Alvin Silzly was born in Jamestown, N.D., in October 1919. After graduating from high school, Alvin enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was shipped to Fairbanks, Alaska, and then to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Alvin and another airman named “Konzak” were assigned to kill the invading Japanese. Alvin and Konzak attacked the Japanese invaders in hand to hand combat. They succeeded.

The airmen also dug foxholes to lie in wait for invading Japanese. Alvin froze both kidneys lying in wait in the frozen fox holes. He was sent to San Diego, California, for surgery.

He had only half a kidney left after surgery. He was medically discharged from the Air Force. He was then drafted into the Korean War, but was quickly discharged due to his health problems.

Alvin was promoted to Master Sergeant and was awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery. His uniform, flag and medals are all at the Stutsman County Museum in Jamestown.
