Facts about Jamestown, ND

We are called the “Buffalo City” for the World’s Largest Buffalo and National Buffalo Museum.

Jamestown is home to the largest American Flag flown in North Dakota. See it flying at Fort Seward historic site.

Jamestown has a population of over 15,000 people.

Jamestown is considered North Dakota’s Motorsports Capital.

Peggy Lee was born in Jamestown in 1920 as Norma Delores Egstrom.

Louis L’Amour grew up in Jamestown, born in 1908.

Jamestown has 7 mountain biking or hiking trails and walking paths at most parks.

Jamestown is home to North Dakota’s only Basilica – St. James Basilica.

Jamestown has a kayak water trail with launch docks, from Nickeus Park to Klaus Park.

Many who settled in Jamestown immigrated from Germany or were Germans from Russia.

NATIONAL BUFFALO MUSEUM

Learn the history of the North American bison, including their relationship with Native American Plains Cultures, their near extinction, and the work continuing today to restore the species. The museum manages a herd of 30 Bison in pastures near the Museum. There is a look-out point in the museum and a bison pasture tour!

Experience the luxurious travel of the 1880s and take a stagecoach ride! Look for them near the entrance to the World’s Largest Buffalo from Memorial Day to Labor Day, $5 per person

FRONTIER VILLAGE

Get a cone or root beer float at the General Store! Now open serving desserts, coffee, and selling unique North Dakota merchandise!

On your way to the World’s Largest Buffalo and National Buffalo Museum, you will go through the Frontier Village. It tells both local history stories as well as depicts tales of homesteading the prairie.

From Memorial Day weekend through September 17, the Village is open from 10am-6pm.

1883 STUTSMAN COUNTY COURTHOUSE:

North Dakota’s statehood was born out of this building. Today, it is home to an immersive, hands-on experience teaching about the most basic forms of government using technology and machines from the 1880s. It also holds the state’s most complete collection of pressed tin all housed in a Gothic Revival Architecture style, a rare site on the 1883 North Dakota prairie.

STUTSMAN COUNTY MEMORIAL MUSEUM

Only one block north of the 1883 Courthouse is the historic Lutz Mansion, a.k.a. the Stutsman County Memorial Museum. Artifacts from Peggy Lee to the Northern Pacific Railroad are on display, as well as a full-scale replica of the two-story gazebo built in 1883 to honor former US President Ulysses S. Grant’s visit.

FORT SEWARD:

Fort Seward was built in 1872 and active until 1877. During that time, it provided support and protection to the Northern Pacific Railroad workers. The Interpretive Center tells many colorful stories about the 1870’s soldiers. Fun Fact: The state’s largest American flag is flown here.

It is also home to the Stutsman County Veterans Memorial Wall.

ST. JAMES BASILICA

One of only 89 Minor Basilicas in the United States, this Catholic Church is a stunning example of an American Gothicstyle Church. The “Windows of Faith” (stained-glass windows) are a community treasure and one of the reasons the church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

LOUIS L’AMOUR

ALFRED DICKEY PUBLIC LIBRARY

Louis L’Amour mentions this library 16 times in his autobiography. Sit at the tables where he spent hours reading and learning. An informational exhibit about Louis L’Amour’s life in Jamestown is available to view for free.

THE CAGE

The Cage is Jamestown’s first indoor baseball hitting facility. Come in and enjoy HitTrax simulation technology which allows you to take batting practice or play a game at your favorite major league/select college ballparks.

NORTH DAKOTA SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Located in the Jamestown Civic Center, the ND Sports Hall of Fame pays tribute to the greatest names in North Dakota Athletics. Some famous athletes from N.D. are Roger Maris (MLB), Phil Jackson (NBA), Darin Erstad (MLB), Jim Kleinsasser (NFL), Carson Wentz (NFL)

FAMILY FUN AT PARTY CRASHERS

Party Crashers is an indoor inflatable park and STEM discovery center perfect for letting kids exercise their minds and their muscles. There’s no better way to get out the wiggles while on a road-trip and there are even massage chairs available for the driver!

HIKE, BIKE, AND RUN

Discover over 35 miles of terrain on one of the 7 signature trails in Jamestown. Developed by volunteers of the Jamestown Area Mountain Bikers and Jamestown Parks & Recreation, these trails provide varying degrees of difficulty.

BEAVERDAM TRAIL

2 miles

The newest trail (doesn’t even have a map yet!) is located on the east side of the Jamestown Reservoir. This little loop has scenic views over the reservoir and little britches fishing pond.

Two Rivers Activity Center is a stateof-the-art recreation center that includes an indoor pool, outdoor splash park, gymnasium, turf and bubble space as well as a strength and cardio area and walking track. Day and weeklong passes for the facility as well as monthly memberships are available. Basketballs, volleyballs, tennis and soccer equipment available for use. GEOCACHING

A high-tech outdoor game that uses a GPS Receiver or GPS enabled smartphone app to find containers (geocaches) hidden by other players. Geocaches can range in size from the size of your thumb to a 5 gallon pail. All geocaches contain a log sheet for the player to sign to verify their visit to the cache.

Within 30 miles of Jamestown there are approximately 170 caches. An introductory guide to geocaching can be found at geocaching.com/guide.

Located in the heart of historical downtown Jamestown, The Arts Center hosts rotating fine arts exhibits all year round featuring regional artists. Downtown green space with flair! Featuring public arts by renowned artists, the Hansen Arts Park is a great place to find inspiration and relax. Every Thursday July through August, the Arts Market hosts an artisan market along with live entertainment, arts & crafts, food, and more. Newly planted in 2022 are native N.D. prairie pollinator plants that not only add beauty to the space but help sustain bees, butterflies, and tell the ecology story of the prairie.

The local band of photo enthusiasts will be meeting the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in the Hansen Arts Studio. Topics are focused primarily for DSLR camera users.

WOOD CARVING GROUP

Our local group of wood carving aficionados meets the third Thursday of the month (except for Holiday weeks) from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Hansen Arts Studio. They love to share their knowledge. Any skill and interest level are welcome to participate. They may even be willing to lend you a chisel.

OPEN MIC NIGHT

Poets, writers, musicians, comedians, solos, duos – all performers are welcome to share their talent with the community at the monthly open mic night, held on the last Thursday of each month. Limit your piece to 10 minutes. P.A. system, bass amp, guitar amp, and music stands are provided. Facilitated by musician Steve Kuykendall.

ARROWWOOD NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE COMPLEX

Chase Lake and Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuges provides 75,000 acres for birding. Chase Lake is home to one of the largest American White Pelican mating colonies in North America. The Arrowwood Refuge Headquarters provides a number of services including a visitor center, a 5½ mile auto tour, view blinds for the dancing of the sharp-tailed grouse in early May, and several nature and hiking trails. BIRDING

From Jamestown heading north to Carrington is the Prairie Pothole Region. Volunteers from Birding Drives Dakota and the Friends of the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge have made it easy to “flock” where the birds are. Six birding drives will take you to remote hotspots amid sweeping grasslands, rolling woodlands, wooded draws and diverse marshlands.

FISHING HUNTING

Stutsman County has great prospects for waterfowl, deer, and upland game hunting. Pipestem Lake, Jamestown Reservoir and Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge have lands that are open to the public. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department can provide information on Conservation PLOTS and licensing.

Superior prospects for perch, pike, walleye, and others characterize North Dakota fishing. On the north edge of town, close to all the amenities, the Jamestown Reservoir and Pipestem Dam and Lake are the most developed fishing areas. Spiritwood Lake (fifteen miles northeast) is a close runner up. For a truly off-the-beaten-path experience, there are other options.

The Rosebud Superintendent’s Railcar served as living accommodations for S. R. Ainslie, Superintendent of the Northern Pacific Yellowstone Division. It remained in service until 1931, and was present for many events in the history of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The Midland Continental Railroad was intended to link grain markets from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Galveston, Texas. Only 77 miles of track were built between Wimbledon and Edgeley, ND. The main floor of the building showcases the railroad’s history.

Peggy Lee (1920-2002) was an American jazz, and popular music singer, songwriter, and actress who lived and worked in this depot during her high school years from 1934 to 1937. The living quarters upstairs in the depot is dedicated entirely to Peggy Lee’s life, career, and music.
