pring is here and full of surprises. Did you know that chickweed—that infernal invasive popping up

everywhere—is actually delicious? Chris Bennett of the Garden & Gun blog reports that chickweed has a bright flavor and crunchy texture, “not unlike that of raw green peas.” And did you know that Chattanooga has both the world’s longest pedestrian bridge (Walnut Street Bridge) and the nation’s first and largest military parks (Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park respectively)? All three locations are prime spots to visit as bulbs bloom and temperatures soar.

MCKNIGHT Living in Downtown Chattanooga gives me an unparalleled mix of social and cultural opportunity along with convenient access to outdoor recreation. I can step out of my door and in fifteen minutes by road bike I’m climbing the shoulder of scenic Lookout Mountain, with views back to the north of the river and downtown. Beautiful sandstone climbing can be found all around the city. Just a few minutes’ running from downtown will get you on Stringer’s Ridge, a newly-created public park with forest trails right in the middle of our urban environment. The Riverwalk offers various access points to put in a flat water kayak or standup paddleboard. Nothing beats a leisurely paddle under the dramatic cliffs of the Bluff View Art District and around Maclellan Island.

After a fun day outside, you could stop by a gallery opening at Gallery 1401, refuel at one of several eateries, and shop the various boutiques at Warehouse Row. If you’re not too tired, the late-night scene at The Social will let you dance the night away. There are few places I’ve experienced with the combination of convenient access to world-class outdoor recreation, cultural resources, and a vibrant community of locally-owned shops and services. I moved here nearly ten years ago to work with Rock/Creek. At the time, I intended to work under a year and head back East to settle in Virginia. What I found here kept me here, and it’s unlikely I will ever leave for more than a vacation. I recently helped start another project called RootsRated to quickly show people where to go outside and what to do after their outdoor adventure all over the country. In all the travel and research we’ve done for RootsRated, my business partners and I have only found a greater appreciation for all we have here in downtown Chattanooga.

CHATTANOOGA WATERFRONT TRIATHLON Touted as one of the best triathlons in the country, the 2014 Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon will take place on Sunday, June 29th. HEAD OF THE HOOCH REGATTA One of the world’s largest rowing regattas, the Head of Hooch, is a Chattanooga spectacle taking place on the first Saturday and Sunday of November each year. IN PLAIN SIGHT Man-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends as Creative Director for Jamestown.

When I was a kid, I collected things related to travel: restaurant matchbooks, postcards, even airline luggage tags. Fueled by an assortment of swizzle sticks from a globe trotting aunt collected at the dawn of the Jet Age, this penchant for squirreling away cool stuff has served me well as Creative Director for Jamestown. I encourage all my team members to make note of the things that inspire them, and we compete in a friendly competition to bring in the next chip of tile or swatch of fabric that will end up in Jamestown’s latest big development. The Creative & Marketing team’s main task is to create brands for Jamestown developments. Not only are we charged with building the brand identities themselves, each with a logo, website, and an array of printed collateral; we are also challenged to extend those brands in all kinds of ways, including signage, fixtures and furnishings, colors and trims, façades, and the creation of brandswithin-brands for events and specialized activities. Everything inspires us: the felted coaster under our bourbon at the local pub, the color of the sky over San Francisco Bay in September, the ribbon on a tote bag we found at the gift show in Paris. We pin our inspirations to vision boards that we’ve created for each of our brands. This encourages us to brainstorm in plain sight. It’s pretty amazing, as a new brand develops, to let your eyes drift from a tattered old signal flag you pinned to the board months before to the bright blue brand it inspired at a property like One West Victory.
