Summer Stroll 2011 Summer comes a little early to Midtown this year with Midtown Alliance's second annual Summer Stroll June 11th (11am 7pm) and 12th (12pm - 4pm). This family-friendly community event features kid's activities, pop-up shopping, food trucks, restaurant specials and live music. Stroll the Midtown Mile from the Woodruff Arts Center to the Fox to experience the fun.

Street Cred Some of the city's best chefs show support for Atlanta's Street Food Coalition with pop-up restaurants at 999 Peachtree every Thursday this summer

chefs will be popping up to show support for the Street Food Coalition. As the name "Pop-Up Chef" implies, these chefs pop up at 999 Peachtree each week to cook up their favorite recipes and show support for Street Food Thursdays. June's lineup includes: Anne Quatrano (FloatAway Cafe), Shaun Doty (Yeah! Burger), Hugh Acheson (Empire State South), Chip Ulbrich (South City Kitchen) and Scott Serpas (Serpa's). idtown Alliance has partnered with Atlanta Street Food Coalition to bring nine of the city's best food trucks to Peachtree Street every Thursday, from 11am to 2pm or until the food runs out. Summer events like Cocktails in the Garden (Thursdays through September, 6pm to 10pm), Concerts in the Garden (select Friday evenings) and Chef Demos (every weekend through October 30), invite guests to revel in their favorite pastimes against a backdrop of fragrant beauty.

rom its humble beginnings in a double-wide trailer to the 2010 expansion that nearly doubled the garden's size, the Atlanta Botanical Garden has remained true to its mission: develop and maintain plant collections for display, education, research, conservation and enjoyment. It's that last aim, enjoyment, that keeps locals and out of towners alike coming back to the gardens season after season.

For garden old-timers, there are always new events and activities like Science Cafe (3rd Thursdays through October) and Woodland Weekends (weekends through August) to enjoy. Newcomers will benefit from a guided Garden Tour, free with admission every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30pm. For more information, please visit: atlantabotanicalgarden.org.

New features include the Canopy Walk, which is the only canopy-level walkway of its kind in the U.S. Walk through the tree canopy and feel like you are floating through the hardwoods as you take a birds eye view of the woodland gardens below.

Q: Compare Midtown past and present.

A: Over the past decade, Midtown has really embraced its potential as the cosmopolitan center of the city. Block for block, venue for venue, it’s hard to imagine another intown neighborhood that has flung its arms open wider to get more people to experience true city living.

My big wish for Midtown in the coming decade is that it embrace its potential as the city center for innovation and creativity.

Q: Give me the basics: Who is Kwanza Hall?

A: I celebrate my 40th birthday on May 1. Like the Midtown that I represent, I’m still growing into my full potential and am very optimistic about the future.

I’m “all in” when it comes to Midtown.

Q: I understand you're supportive of Atlanta's street food movement.

A: Yes, I am the founding City sponsor of the Urban Picnic at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market. It’s great to see Midtown residents, office workers, and businesses embrace street food so enthusiastically. My dream is a comprehensive street food network throughout the city.

Q: Any comments on the upcoming Summer Stroll?

here's a line in the poem "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann that says, "whether or not it is clear to you, the universe is unfolding as it should." Not so long ago, developers, property owners and retailers came together to craft a grand vision for a Midtown Mile that would feature a million square feet of national luxury retail.

When the recession brought their Fifth Avenue dreams into question, it was probably hard for Midtown Mile supporters to trust that the universe was actually unfolding as it should. In hindsight, however, maybe the past four or five difficult years have been a blessing. Today, most Midtown developers have ceased comparing Midtown Mile to Chicago's Magnificent Mile or New York's Fifth Avenue. Instead, they're imagining a Midtown Mile packed with locally-owned street-level retail shops, eateries and services. This new vision for the Mile more closely resembles what Midtown should have been aiming for all along: a walkable, shoppable, anti-mall destination that more closely reflects the unique Urban-Southern zeitgeist of twenty-first century Atlanta.

Neighborhood events like Midtown Alliance's Summer Stroll (a street festival celebrating the Midtown Mile, June 11 & 12), Street Food Thursdays, and Midtown Market are breathing new life into Peachtree Street; and, with pop-up shopping at 999 Peachtree, national stores like CB2 and local restaurants and shops like Empire State South and DREWLEWIS, the new vision for Midtown Mile is well on its way to becoming a reality.
