Dr. Polly L. Peterson ’89 University of Jamestown President

August 24, 2020, was the start of the fall semester. Enthusiastic freshmen were scurrying about campus trying to find their classrooms. Returners could be seen visiting with old friends whom they had not seen in months. Faculty carried books, a cup of coffee, and a host of handouts in preparation for another academic semester. If one did not know better, the scene portrayed on this late August morning may not have seemed any more peculiar than the ones that came before it. However, no words could be further from the truth; this year, was no normal year!

Oddly enough, this day marked a special day for me. Twenty-eight years earlier, I began my career at Jamestown College. I am still baffled to explain where time has gone, but as I gaze at the reflection staring back at me each morning, it is clear that time has elapsed. What a quarter century cannot change, however, is the deep commitment my husband and I have for the University of Jamestown and the love and respect that we share for our Jimmie family: past, present and future.

As I awoke earlier than usual that Monday morning, it was only fitting that my morning prayer began with Psalm 118:24: This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. The spring and summer were consumed by long days, sleepless nights and unusual conversations about the difference between isolation and quarantine, and what social distancing would mean for a University whose mission anchors its identity in being together—academically, artistically, and athletically. In a moment of rare silence, I reflected on the changes I had witnessed over the past 28 years knowing they paled in comparison to what our faculty and students would be facing as we braved the 2020-21 academic year together. And yet, all I wanted to do was rejoice!

The history of the University of Jamestown has included both high and low periods. I consider it a privilege to represent students, faculty, staff and alumni who believe that what we do here matters. Your letters, phone calls, and messages of encouragement have inspired courage to think differently, to create new opportunities, and to remove borders that may have previously limited our capacity to grow. As a result, I rejoice as I share with you that the University achieved record enrollment this fall.

We added a new online graduate program in Clinical Counseling, significantly grew our enrollment in the Master of Education and Master of Arts in Leadership programs, and our undergraduate freshmen class was among the largest of the past ten years. Our retention rate has grown by 14% in the past four years and nearly every bed on campus is full. The beautiful new mixed-use housing and retail facility, UJ Place, welcomed 110 new residential students, and the addition of a Starbucks and bistro opening under the name Knight and Day Coffee is a much-anticipated new campus amenity.

With the assistance of grants and contributions, the University invested nearly $1.5 million to equip classrooms with audiovisual technology and personal protection equipment to ensure the health and safety of our community.

Faculty are now able to deliver their courses synchronously both in person and virtually with as limited disruption as possible. And, although new protocols require significant interruption, athletes and artists have found ways to enjoy the activities they love.

Later this fall, the University will break ground on a complete renovation of Taylor Stadium while celebrating the partnership forged between UJ and Jamestown Public Schools. The project will include installing field turf, a new nine-lane state of the art track, carving out a new area for field events, and constructing a beautiful new facility for boosters, fans and the press to enjoy.

The two groups will also be working together on a new academy-style Master’s Degree for teachers and an Introduction to Teaching course for high school juniors and seniors.

For many of us, time has stood still for the past six months. Personally, our family has enjoyed unexpected days together, and enhanced technology has facilitated long overdue gatherings (albeit virtual) with dear friends. At UJ, we have approached every hour with care and attention respecting a disease that has presented us with more questions than answers. As a Christian University committed to the development of wholeness in our students, our work has inspired a renewed passion in the mission of UJ. Since 1883, UJ has embraced the Presbyterian commitment to education that informs the mind and shapes character. We respect Walt Whitman’s idea that “time is a gift of God, given to man that he might use it…to serve the advancement of humanity.” On behalf of our faculty, staff, students, and administration, I want to express our deep gratitude for the support of alumni and friends during this pandemic. We have felt your prayers, and we are grateful for your enthusiastic support.

“Unlike most other universities, there are so many ways to get involved, and people actually want you to be active in as many things as you want.

The University of Jamestown stood out to me when touring universities because of their Fine Arts Scholarships. UJ allowed me to do everything I love, all at the same time, and get money for it. Here at UJ, I participate in Band, Choir, Theater, Jazz Band, Drumline, and Pep Band, as well as numerous organizations and clubs.

Without the help from my scholarships, I may have ended up at a different University—ultimately having to choose between my several different passions. I am so thankful for the four years I have spent at the University of Jamestown, and I know the things I have learned here will help me throughout my life.”

Gifts Received Annual Progress Fund Support of almost every aspect of academic and residential life: operations, technology, faculty development, co-curricular activities, and scholarships.

FISCAL YEAR 2019-2020 July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020

Annual Progress Fund – Restricted $606,499 Support of current expenditures for specific programs: Centers of Excellence, campus renovations, guest lectureships, and special projects.

Endowment Gifts to the endowment are received from several sources: cash gifts, bequests, and realized planned gifts such as annuities and trust funds. Endowment earnings support the named scholarship program as well as specific needs such as support of the library, and academic programs and equipment.

Annuities Gifting to the University of Jamestown in the form of an annuity insures a lifetime income for the donor, as well as provides for a future gift to the University of Jamestown.

Most annuity funds are eventually added to the University’s endowment for the purpose designated by the donor.

Plant Fund Gifts towards campus building, grounds, and renovation projects. These may include new projects or pledge payments toward completed projects.

A Future Together: Jimmies Care About Jimmies

Upon returning to the University of Jamestown as an employee after being a student 18 years ago, one of the first comments an alum shared with me was, “Jimmies care about Jimmies!” I have found this statement to be true on multiple levels, for so many. It causes me to stop and ask the question: What is it that motivates Jimmies to care about Jimmies? Further, what is it that motivates you, as alumni and friends, to care about the health and legacy of the University of Jamestown?

The concept of motivation is anchored in a belief that an initiative, a cause, or a mission is ‘worth it’. The desire to ask questions of what motivates each one of us can be uncomfortable but revealing in our lives as we access initiatives, causes, and missions. The result of our personal answers to these types of questions can reveal either self-serving or self-sacrificial realities and motives for us all. I would argue that what I have observed from our alumni and friends are motives anchored in a deep care and concern for the Jimmies of today. This care and concern for our current students is part of your story that others cared for you, paving the way for the University to be what it was in the past, what it is today, and what it can be into the future. Foundational truths pave the way for imperative action. The imperative action is that you have given and responded in a fantastic way in 2019-20. This report documents dollar amounts, giving levels, class giving percentages, and future gifts that await the University.

However, this report represents so much more. It represents deposits into the lives of people. This is what the University of Jamestown is all about.

Impacting PEOPLE! I continue to believe personally, and hear repeatedly, that the University of Jamestown gave our alumni so much: relationships that last a lifetime; professional preparation that has been catalytic in shaping next steps in careers; opportunities to learn and develop perseverance amidst challenges. And these are just a few examples of what the University of Jamestown has given to us. Our response to what we have received is to make sure we multiply this same care forward to others; therefore, we care about other Jimmies, because other Jimmies cared for us.

The pace of 2020 has slowed our lives down considerably, giving us pause to consider the importance of serving and caring about others. Whether it be empathy demonstrated for those fighting sickness, racial injustice, or anxiety about the future or being mindful of students entering and

Brett Moser continuing college amidst a pandemic—we must acknowledge the opportunity we all have to demonstrate servant lifestyles toward others.

The past year, you have done this with a fantastic response. Let me humbly say, thank you! From an annual perspective, the Annual Progress Fund raised $1,695,246 in combined unrestricted and restricted gifts in the last fiscal year. This amount exceeded our goal of $1.5 million. Our unrestricted gifts in the Annual Progress Fund reached our goal of $1 million in raising a University record of $1,090,750. Further, an additional $468,963 was given in unrestricted bequests to the University.

Our future is dependent upon annual scholarship dollars raised, endowment gifts and considerations, and capital projects and improvements to our campus. We can continue to do this as Jimmies caring about Jimmies for an amazing future together. Would you continue to give generously, being motivated to serve our students?

We anticipate and are excited about the next addition to campus in a renovation project of our football and track facility. To date, $8.145 million has been contributed and pledged to this project. Our goal is $11.5 million. I believe we can get there because of our alumni and friends caring about the future experiences of the next generation of Jimmies. We are a special institution, who continues to accomplish extraordinary things because of our leadership, the vision of our trustees, and the goodness of God continuing to bless us.

As part of our statement of values, we are “an institution of higher education in the Presbyterian tradition, celebrating God through the use

of our minds and the exercise of reason, believing that God is the source of all truth.” The truth is our Lord has sustained us through a pandemic, brought students back to campus, given us strength to continue in our mission, and created an optimism and hope for the future that our work is not done. In fact, the University of Jamestown continues to do great things, producing great people—because a group of alumni and friends care about 1,168 students in Jamestown and Fargo, North Dakota. Thank you for what you do—our future together is brighter and more exciting because of you! I look forward to connecting with you face-to-face in the future!

Looking to the Future The proposed Football field and Track renovation will include a new turf Football field, a new nine-lane, 400m Track, and a new Track and Field throw area. It will also feature new press boxes, a concourse, plaza, new seating, parking, tailgating area, and new lighting.
