Impacted. Transformed. Grateful. Dr. Polly L. Peterson ’89 University of Jamestown President
A few weeks ago, we celebrated the University’s 110th Homecoming. As I prepared for the return of alumni and the celebration of what has been one of the most significant periods in our University’s history, I must admit my emotions got the best of me. Perhaps the early October weather played a role in my sensitivity, but frankly, it was much more than that. As I gazed out my window admiring the nearly 900 students strolling about campus, I could not help but reflect on the insight and courage of those who have come before us. I wondered if, 136 years ago, the founders of our University, standing atop this windy hill overlooking the beautiful James River Valley, envisioned a campus that has grown in size to include seven (soon to be eight) residential buildings, seven classroom buildings, a library, a wellness center, a beautiful fine arts facility, a student union, a stunning athletic center, and a place of worship. My first reaction to that thought was that there is no way they could have. But, then it occurred to me that although they may not have envisioned this campus exactly as it is today, what they did have were hopes and dreams. The founders of the University of Jamestown believed in the pursuit of truth and knowledge and the growth of Christian values, and the way that they dreamed of sharing that vision was through education. As I think about this, I ponder the parallel that exists for our students today. Although students may not know exactly where their road will take them, they come to us with hopes and dreams that by opening the doors to education, their future will be filled with opportunities and that by choosing UJ, their lives will be forever transformed by the people and experiences they encounter here. With each passing decade, the University of Jamestown has become stronger because people have believed in its mission. From the early founders, to each of you, our University has grown and prospered because of the hopes and dreams for a better future for young people. I cannot thank you enough for believing in the mission of the University of Jamestown, for opening the door to endless possibilities for our students, and for transforming a college into what has now grown into a sprawling University. UJ is thriving because of you.
Five years ago, the Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to move forward with an ambitious $60 million Capital Campaign with the goal of achieving success in three areas: excellence in academics; enrichment of student life; and affordability for all. During this time, we have celebrated the opening of one of the greatest science and nursing facilities in the state, the McKenna Thielsch Center for Science and Nursing; renovated the Badal Nafus Admissions and Alumni Center; and expanded the Jimmie Connection to include a spacious Student Engagement Center. We have also made significant improvements to Vorhees Chapel and the Foss Wrestling Room, and we transformed the Hansen Center’s J-House into an expansive game room, movie theatre, and center for intramural activities. And last, but not least, we constructed the most amazing athletic center in all the Midwest: the stunning Harold Newman Arena. Academically, we have added graduate programs in Physical Therapy, Leadership, Education, and Clinical Counseling, and undergraduate programs in Exercise Science and Engineering. Athletically, we added a hockey team, a men’s volleyball team, shooting sports, and even an eSports team. None of these things would have been possible, however, without the commitment and dedication of a tremendously talented group of faculty, staff, coaches, and students. Through the efforts of the Opening Doors Transforming Lives Campaign we were able to grow the annual fund to more than $1 million annually and the University’s Endowment to more than $38 million. These funds go directly to supporting the daily work that we do, and help to make UJ affordable for our students. With more than 400 individual scholarship opportunities available and Endowment funds directed to faculty development, equipment, maintenance and research, the combined impact of the Endowment and Annual Progress Fund provides nearly $5 million annually to support the work of our faculty, staff and students. As stewards of this University, many times we were asked…why another campaign? Why again? Why now? A Capital Campaign calls on us to ask what we stand for as a University and what institutional commitments we make that define whom we are and whom we will be for decades and centuries to come. A campaign challenges us to meet the demands of change – change which compels us to respond with increasing speed and diversity of thought. A campaign confronts us with the opportunity and

The theme of this campaign has been about people. We have opened the doors for students near and far, and we have not only transformed their lives, but we have transformed the life of this University, positioning it to seize the future with strength, confidence, and courage.

Finally, we must substantially increase the size of our endowment to honor our commitment to making UJ an affordable private, Christian university for all students.
Two special people who demonstrated courage in this campaign were our co-chairs: Elmer Schindel ’63, and Ed Nafus ’63. Combined, their leadership as trustees of this University span a quarter of a century, and when confronted with the opportunity to lead our largest, most transformational campaign in the school’s history, both led with courage and collaboration. All measures of thanks seem insignificant to the transformative impact Elmer and Ed have had on this campaign and the University of Jamestown through their commitment of leadership and support. It is with gratitude and praise that your UJ family thanks these two forever Jimmies.
In this 2018-19 edition of the President’s Report, you can see the transformative impact that people have had on the University of Jamestown throughout our history. Without the collective support of our alumni and friends, the University would not be here today. Whether you refer a student, share your UJ story with a friend, volunteer, or provide financial support, every gesture matters. We need all of us, working together, to ensure a future filled with opportunity.
The University has been blessed with many visionary leaders throughout our history and in particular, throughout the Opening Doors Transforming Lives Campaign. The campaign is not a conclusion; it is a commencement. As we continue to navigate a somewhat uncertain future for higher education, the University of Jamestown is going to need many more leaders to step forward. We are a University that understands commitment, we embrace the challenges ahead, and we thrive on defying the odds. Included in this 2019 President’s Report you will find the University’s Strategic Plan approved by the Trustees this year. As we plan for our future, we must think boldly and swiftly as we contemplate the gale winds of change that are redefining the basic tenets of higher education today. We must continue to offer distinctive new programs at both the graduate and undergraduate level as we strive to serve a more diverse student body who espouses a global understanding and appreciation for diverse ways of living and working. We must commit to hiring and supporting quality professors to ensure that our graduates are ready to meet the demands of a 21st century work place. We must continue stewarding our beautiful physical plant while embracing new, innovative ways to reach learners who wish for quality educational

University of Jamestown Strategic Plan 2019-2024 The University of Jamestown strives to be on the leading edge of growth and opportunity. The educational needs of current and potential students are at the forefront as we expand our undergraduate and graduate online courses and programs, as well as our campus-based programs. Our plan for the upcoming years aggressively assesses and addresses the combination of critical thinking and leadership skills our students will need in an ever-changing career-oriented marketplace. 1. Serve an Expanded and More Diverse Student Body: Graduate, Undergraduate, Residential and Non-Residential to 1,500 students by 2024 2. Steward our Human Resources
We recognize that our greatest strength is our people. This plan calls for a culture that promotes professional development, collaboration, innovation, and support for the University’s mission.
3. Steward our Physical and Financial Resources
Our generous supporters, past and present, have provided us with the resources and infrastructure necessary to carry out the University’s mission. By raising support for new programs and growing the endowment, we will give the University the best possible footing for the future.
4. Explore Geographic Diversification and Cultivate Strategic Partnership, Merger, and Acquisition Opportunities
The higher education landscape of the future requires us to look beyond our walls. Partners in residential living, international travel, and educational programming offer ways to expand opportunities while sharing resources.

In an evolving marketplace, where the world is at one’s fingertips, expanding the reach and the influence of the University of Jamestown is imperative. Gifting to the University of Jamestown in the form of an annuity insures a lifetime income for the donor as well as provides for a future gift to the University of Jamestown. Most annuity funds are eventually added to the University’s endowment for the purpose designated by the donor.

I firmly believe that the mission of our Institution is at the center of who we are and what we do. President Peterson continues to lead with our mission in view. We are firmly anchored to provide academic excellence, blending the liberal arts with professional preparation, in a cocurricular environment that is committed to the Christian faith. Friends, what happens when a mission is central to who you are and what you do? A movement. A movement is when a mission is defined, honored, understood, and lived out to the end of becoming a dynamic power in transforming lives. No doubt about it, lives are continuing to be impacted and changed at the University of Jamestown. A movement started in central North Dakota in 1883 and continues today, and a big part of this story continuing is your generosity. We thank you and honor you in this report as you support and are a part of this movement centered on mission. Brett Moser
As I reflect on the past eight months since joining the newly named Department of Development and Alumni Relations (formerly Institutional Advancement), I am encouraged by the continued and faithful generosity demonstrated by Alumni and Friends of the University of Jamestown. A question that is healthy to be asked and reminded of is: Why? Why does generosity continue from a dedicated group that values who we are and what we do at the University of Jamestown? The answer is simply: The Mission! Many organizations and institutions have mission statements in our world today. However, anything worth giving towards must
Recently, at Homecoming 2019 we celebrated the completion of the Opening Doors, Transforming Lives campaign with an announced total of $61,252,242 raised through gifts, pledges, and bequests. What a staggering amount of support! Every dollar given over the last five years of this campaign matters to continue this movement centered on mission into the future. As we transition from the completion of this campaign to the future implementation of President Peterson’s Strategic Plan, it is important that we continue to make UJ accessible and affordable to as many students as possible. This effort is shaped by our commitment in raising annual funds and increasing our endowment.

From an annual perspective the Annual Progress Fund raised $1.66 million in combined unrestricted and restricted gifts in the last fiscal year. This exceeded our goal of $1.5 million. The Jimmie Booster Club, Friends of Fine Arts, Jimmie Generation Scholarships, and Annual Fund gifts continue to offer opportunities to fund student scholarship. Our unrestricted gifts were just short of our goal of $1 million and we continue to strive to that goal of raising $1 million in fiscal year 2019-20.

There are numerous ways to be a blessing for others at the University of Jamestown—all of which support and strengthen the University’s mission. • Give to current students and programs through the Annual Progress Fund, Jimmie Generation Scholarships, and events such as Dine and Bid and Jimmie Scramble. • Support a program that has personal meaning to you, such as the Booster Club, Friends of the Fine Arts, or a particular department or activity. • Secure the future of the University of Jamestown through a bequest, an endowment, life insurance, or a trust. • Honor a loved one, family member, friends, mentor, or classmate with a gift by donating in memory of, or in tribute to them. • Benefit both the University and you through gifts of stock, IRA rollovers and distributions, gifts of land and homes, charitable gift annuities. • Refer a student via the Alumni Referral Scholarship ($250 per year for four years) at uj.edu/refer-a-student or send in the form below.
