Something old, something new…

Dr. Polly L. Peterson ’89 University of Jamestown President

The familiar wedding rhyme was a part of what made this year special for our family as our daughter, Paige, and her husband, Dylan, were married on a beautiful August day.

“Something old, something new” was brought to mind again, this time in the week leading up to the University of Jamestown’s Homecoming, when two different events were both sources of reflection, pride, and celebration for our University.

Something new Nearly 138 years ago, a group of courageous leaders opened the first college in a part of the Dakota Territory that would soon be known as North Dakota. This college was on a bluff overlooking the beautiful James River Valley. Since that time, the University of Jamestown has been innovating and growing the opportunities we offer to students. With each passing decade, the University has become stronger because of people like you—people who believe in education and in investing in the future of those who follow in their footsteps.

During a time when many other educational institutions are in decline, I am proud to share that the University of Jamestown is thriving. This year, our enrollment increased by 13 percent, to a record 1295 students.

We welcomed the second largest freshmen class in school history. But as we all know, success is short lived if we spend our time looking in the rearview mirror, where we know the future is not. It has never been more important for universities like ours to look forward and plan for an evolving economy.

On Oct. 6, we announced the launch of a new division, UJ Accelerated, in a new location, Phoenix, AZ. By establishing UJ Accelerated, we recognize that learning does not begin and end the same way for every student.

Through this new division, learners can access a growing number of courses, credentials, boot camps, and short-term certificate programs. For those learners desiring to go further, these opportunities will be stackable into the University’s many degree programs. Our first offerings are in Financial Fluency, Metalearning, and Cybersecurity, followed by Project Management, Digital Marketing and several certificates in Leadership beginning early in 2021.

Through UJ Accelerated, we can reach the 73 percent of students who now access education in nontraditional ways, while still giving these students a sense of what makes the University of Jamestown The Best CareerOriented Liberal Arts University in the Midwest, as our vision states.

ago, with the support of boards at both the University of Jamestown and Jamestown Public Schools, we began a project that brought hope to a community that needed it. From storm sewers to utility lines, parking lots to field events, fundraising support to bridge financing, each new challenge was met with solution-minded collaborators who ensured that just one year after breaking ground, the Jimmies and Blue Jays would have this stunningly beautiful facility.

Something old… made new

Besides the many athletic events that have already taken place this fall, a favorite event of mine was our back-to-school picnic for faculty and staff, held on the Jim Johnson Plaza at the Stadium. As the evening drew to a close, a few of us stayed late to watch the sun set over the hill. As we gazed upon the growing landscape of UJ, my mind wandered to the days of our first President. Arriving to boarded windows and abandoned hallways, Dr. Kroeze looked out over a twigless, windy campus on the hill with little else to ponder but the magnitude of his decision to leave a prominent presidency at Whitworth. Instead of looking pessimistically at his situation, he looked over the hill at the horizon only to set his eyes upon the most gorgeous display of indescribable beauty of color and sky he had ever seen. In that moment, his heart was full. When he returned to the Gladstone Hotel to join his wife and family, he exclaimed, “Oh, it is simply magnificent; it is superb; never have I seen anything like it!”

During the fall of 1926, Jamestown College hosted its first Homecoming.

Just nine years later, following a period of reinvestment in America’s infrastructure, the College dedicated the new Taylor Stadium, which had been hand dug by over 200 young men. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was even present to celebrate their work.

Fast forward 95 years, just two days after our exciting launch of UJ Accelerated, we celebrated Homecoming and the renewal of one of the oldest and most cherished parts of our University, dedicating the Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium at the site of historic Taylor Stadium.

It was a beautiful day to celebrate the partnership between the University and Jamestown Public Schools and to recognize the many donors who made the dream a reality, especially lead donor Dr. Jo-Ida Hansen.

Although much has changed since that first Homecoming celebration, some things never change.

From the beginning, our University has been surrounded by a community of visionary leaders who believed in the value that a private university could bring to their community. For a bid of $20,000 and a private gift of land, Jamestown College became the first North Dakota university to be chartered. Since that fall day in 1883, our decisions have been guided by our commitment to providing a holistic education for our students, where liberal arts and Christian faith are intricately woven into the fabric of what has become a thriving Midwestern university. And over these many years, there are numerous examples of the community and the college collaborating to support the academic, athletic, and artistic needs of a growing population of people, young and old.

The Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium represents a beautiful outcome of what is possible when we all work together. Twenty months

This past Homecoming was a reminder that although much has changed over the past 14 decades, the feeling of pride that we share for our beloved Hea Kan will never change! From the oldest and most-loved locations to the newest cutting-edge programs, I feel blessed to be a part of this incredible Jimmie story. For those of you who have not been back in a while, I invite you to come see us. I promise you, you will not be disappointed: it is simply magnificent; it is superb; never have I seen anything like it! Thank God from whom all blessings flow!

Reflection, Thanksgiving and Catching the Vision!

In the spring of 1999, two weeks after finishing my high school basketball career, Coach Brad Huse from Jamestown College sat in our living room in Churchs Ferry, ND. He proceeded to offer me the opportunity to be a Jimmie with a scholarship in athletics and academics. What I didn’t know at the time, that I know now is that this money came from somewhere. It did not grow on trees. That money did not come from the state of North Dakota.

Ultimately, that money came from the faithful supporters and donors—the alumni and friends of the University of Jamestown.

I am forever grateful, because it ultimately changed my life. I met my spouse, made lifelong friends, and received a great education— even making it through Dr. Steffan’s General Chemistry class and surviving Dr. Amaro’s Organic Chemistry.

Now, my kids are swept up in the same excitement of what is happening here as they wear the orange and black, cheering at games and going to activities; while I support and give to that same scholarship opportunity that was offered to me in my living room 22 years ago. How special a cycle this is! I encourage you to take time to reflect on your own story and journey.

In June, we completed a banner year for the fundraising efforts and support of the University. More than $9.66 million was given to UJ in the 2021 fiscal year. This amount represents the second most dollars given in school history. We exceeded our Annual Progress Fund goal of $1 million, raising $1.093 million. Further, we have a fully funded Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium of $11.7 million, including giving and pledges. Additionally, the University’s endowment has grown through giving and a healthy market to $45.3 million, up from $38 million one year ago.

As I have thought about how to respond to this phenomenal work, I remember a mentor of mine once stating: “It’s one thing to be grateful, but it is another thing altogether to give thanks. Gratitude is what you feel, but thanksgiving is what you do.”

We feel a sense of gratitude to you as our Alumni and Friends.

And what we do to show that gratitude—whenever possible—is to be with you, to shake your hands, give you hugs, and say these

Gratitude is what you feel, but thanksgiving is what you do.” words in your presence: THANK YOU! You are the reason that our students are receiving the great education and experiences today, just as you did recently, or many years ago!

Conclusively, would you continue to support the vision of this institution to become the best career-oriented liberal arts university in the Midwest? Let me assure you, this is an inspiring vision.

There is nothing worse than being asked to support a terribly uninspiring organization that just pays the bills, keeps the lights on, plateaus, and believes the status quo is success. That is not our goal. We don’t desire to call you to support that. However, when we catch the vision of what is happening here, it is contagious.

Bills are not only being paid, but people’s lives—students, staff, and faculty are also being changed. I am hopeful and prayerful that a snowball effect happens here at UJ, and we flourish in a unique way that parallels our Christian faith. Presbyterian minister Scott Sauls states: “Christianity always flourishes most as a life-giving minority, not as a powerful majority. It is through subversive, countercultural acts of love, justice, and service for the common good that Christianity has always gained the most ground.”

In a related way, the University of Jamestown—as we further our mission—arguably is a life-giving minority amidst other socalled majority of “powerful” institutions around us in higher education. We will demonstrate a countercultural reality to love others, seek justice, serve, and give as we’ve been given much.

The missions of other institutions are not built upon our three pillars: professional preparation, co-curricular experiences, all in a Christian environment. It is with this commitment—anchored to our mission—that we will gain the most ground. That we will live and work, unapologetically tethered to our values as an institution.

It is inspiring work, a vision worth catching. We are overflowing with thankfulness for you … and I look forward to shaking your hands, and spending time with you in the future!

UJ Dedicates New Stadium

As a part of Homecoming weekend, on Friday, October 8, University of Jamestown held its Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium Dedication Ceremony.

Attendees sat in the bleachers of the stadium, looking over the new turf field and track. Ten speakers, including University of Jamestown staff, major donors and a UJ student, spoke about what the new stadium means for the community.

“My parents would be so proud of the community, the University, and the school district for pulling together to create this fabulous venue.”

President Dr. Polly Peterson opened the event, emphasizing how the new stadium represents a beautiful outcome of what is possible when community members work together.

“This is a gift to this community, to the University, to our students most importantly, to the high school students who will play here, to the visitors that we welcome here, to the athletes at UJ whose lives get transformed when they say yes to becoming a Jimmie. This is incredible,” she said.

In total, 287 donors gave to the project, with 87 of those donors giving $10K or more. Brett Moser, VP for Development and Alumni Relations, commented on the donors who made this project a reality, saying, “As I reflect on the history of gifts and giving, I believe three things happened.

Those three things are: One: courage. Two: partnerships. And three: lifestyles of generosity were displayed.”

One common theme ran through all ten speeches. This project was possible because there was a need for it. The passion, dedication and commitment the high school and college students display required a better stadium. Dr. Peterson addressed the students that were in attendance: “You Blue Jays and you Jimmies up there, we want more for you. This was for you.”

When all of the speeches were complete, a ribbon cutting was held followed by a lunch in the Jim J. Johnson ’65 Plaza.

Endowment Gifts to the endowment are received from several sources: cash gifts, bequests, and realized planned gifts such as annuities and trust funds. Endowment earnings support the named scholarship program as well as specific needs such as support of the library, and academic programs and equipment.
