Upcoming Art Classes New Exhibit Linda’s New Mural in the Alley Upcoming Events

Mindi Schmitz Executive Director

Just when I thought things would slow down at The Arts Center, I find myself in the thick of meetings. We are planning for our second Perfectly Paired season. It’s a great evening featuring our resident sommelier, Karla Sandness pairing wonderful wine with a gallery experience. The Arts Center has professional art exhibits; this is a great way to get our members and the community in the gallery to meet the artists and have a great evening. The 2022 Gala is on the calendar. “Stepping Out for the Arts” is the theme. So brush off or hit the stores for your best/funkiest/most outrageous shoes, you will be showing them off, Friday, February 4 in the lobby of Newman Arena. Another exciting happening at The Arts Center is a partnership we have with the Stutsman County Human Rights Coalition. We are hosting their monthly meetings; and on November 18 we will be presenting the North Dakota Human Rights Film Festival, check out page 11 for more information. Oh and make sure to stop by and meet Anna Jacobson, our new Director of Education and Exhibitions. You may have met her in the past, as she did a few stints as our artist in residence. Sincerely,

THE ARTS CENTER’S ANNUAL GALA

WOMEN’S POINT OF VIEW Selections from the Minot State University Permanent Art Collection Exhibits: October 14 – November 27, 2021 Women’s Point of View showcases a selection of work by women artists represented in the Minot State University Permanent Art Collection. While the exhibition ranges greatly in medium and style, it is unified by groupings of common themes: portraits, scenes from nature, pop art, and abstract works. The Minot State Art Department began a focused effort to develop a Permanent Art Collection in the early 1970’s and the Arts Center now manages a collection of over 1300 pieces.

Fall in Jefferson County, Mary Craik

The collection originated when a small but energetic faculty, enthusiastic students and volunteers at then Minot State College introduced a national juried exhibition to the art program with the intent of enhancing the visual arts experiences of students, the campus and the regional art community. This “National Print and Drawing Show” would also be the source of a quality contemporary fine art collection, through the presentation of purchase awards. In the 1990’s, the original juried competition was opened to international entries, became Americas 2000: Paperworks, and a second competition for an All Media category was started. Artwork from the collection is used as a resource for teaching, involving students in the hands on study of original works of art and cultural objects. The collection is also displayed on the Minot State campus and showcased in exhibitions that are frequently toured to other galleries as well as being on view at the University. The pieces featured in this touring exhibition stem from purchase awards granted in the two annual juried competitions, or from donations to the Collection. As a special project aimed to utilize the collection and teach about curatorial methods, this exhibit was developed by art students who wanted to highlight art created by women artists. Women’s Point of View was organized and sponsored by the Northwest Arts Center at Minot State University. This project is funded in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

ART EXPLOSION

a mural by Linda Roesch From the voice of the artist: “The mural, Art Explosion, has been in the works for over a year. The Arts Center staff wanted to incorporate elements that reflect all that The Arts Center has to offer, including Arts After School classes like painting, drawing and sculpting, live music performances and open mic, and film festivals. We also wanted a design that offered interactive elements for photo opportunities, so I’ve included several markers, crayons and colored pencils falling from the sky and hovering near the ground to “grab”, carry or hold. These elements were designed around the main focal point of the mural—an eruption of paint in every color bursting out from a tube and arcing up into the sky! Passersby might also be inclined to join the trio of musicians located on the extreme left of the mural. Winston, AC office dog, also makes an appearance in the mural. The mural was started in mid August… about the time we started seeing our first rains of the summer. Even in it’s unfinished state, folks from the community and from out of town have already begun taking advantage of Jamestown’s newest photo op, and from my apartment upstairs I can hear passersby comment on the brilliant colors in the design.”

THE ART OF WRITING

December 2, 2021 – January 8, 2022 BisMan Writer’s Guild was started in Feb. 2019. Our mission is to uplift local writers throughout North Dakota by promoting, advancing, and supporting them. We do this by offering workshops, sharing the works of others, and shedding light on the amazing talent of our state. We work hard to bring workshops, write-ins, general get-togethers, as well as go to local events to promote our writers. The BisMan Writers Guild paired with the North Dakota Art Gallery Association to put together a traveling art show, funded by Dakota West Arts Council. The Art of Writing is a project unlike any other. This show brings together writers & artists together to create original pieces based on each other’s already established pieces. Above: Untitled, by Andrea Fagerstrom, acrylic on canvas. From the Cover: Ghosts of the Dawning Light, by Johnathan Campbell, print
