ANNUAL SUMMARY 2011

Perhaps it’s because another year has zipped by (not getting any younger) that I find myself reading an article titled “Beyond Therapy – Aging and the Arts” by David Surface. He says, “While creative arts programs appear to have a genuine therapeutic effect for older adults, changes in our understanding of the aging process also influence changes in our understanding of the relationship between aging and the arts. As we learn to view aging as a process of growth rather than deterioration, we also learn to consider the arts not as a remedy to problems but as tools to unlock human potential.”

A reminder of the transformative power of the arts, is a drawing hanging in our living room by Elizabeth Layton. At age 68, Layton had been fighting 35 years of depression when she took a contour drawing class which unleashed a flood of creative expression. “What distinguishes Elizabeth Layton’s drawings from others is their breadth, their freshness, and their expression of hope. Few artists have depicted such far reaching social concerns as capital punishment, homelessness, hunger, racial prejudice, AIDS, aging and the right to die. Each drawing challenges us to walk in the shoes of the less fortunate and urges us to work not just for a kinder and gentler nation but for a kinder and gentler self.

The most amazing part of it all is that Elizabeth was a largely untrained greatgrandmother living in a small town who touched and enriched many people’s lives through her art.”

Regardless of our age, each of our toolboxes should include ways to unlock our human potential as well as our creative capacities. These metaphorical toolboxes mirror the functional ones Arts Center staff creates through arts programming.

A strong foundational knowledge of the elements of art is something we are building in each elementary student. Artists hired to work in the schools are teaching pattern in kindergarten, line & shape in first grade, color in second grade, space (negative & positive) in third grade, form & texture in fourth grade and art history in fifth grade. By the time these students move to middle school, they will have the basic building blocks to expand their creative capacity and continue to unlock their potential.

“Kids” of all ages, from these elementary students to the adults and seniors we work with at Ave Maria Village and the Heritage Center, can utilize arts enrichment to maintain their curiosity; remain open to new experiences; take risks; work hard to develop a skill; and appreciate each individual’s differences......tapping their potential.

The Arts Center opened the doors to it’s beautifully remodeled facility on May 4, 2012.

The renovation was made possible solely by donations from Arts Center supporters.

The success of the renovation project is a wonderful testament to the work The Arts Center does in the Jamestown community, as well as a terrific show of support from our community members and donors.
