Delay, Distraction or Dutiful Procedure

Carson residents waited three long weeks to find out the official count of the June 2, 2015 Special Municipal Election to fill the empty City Council Member seat.

On June 23, 2015 The Carson Courier caught up with City Clerk Jim Dear to discuss the reason for the result delay.

According to Dear , “There was no questioning of the validity of votes, that was a rumor. This is the time it takes to do it right. If you rush it you make mistakes.”

When asked about the amount of time taken, Dear shared unofficial notes from the April 7, 2015 City Council Meeting which considers the June meeting schedule changes due to the Special Municipal Election on Tuesday June 2, 2015. The minutes mention three alternative’s for the month of June. The second option mentions opting out of the June 2nd meeting, having the regularly scheduled June 16th meeting,

Apparently Dear went with the 2nd option and certified the votes on June 22,, 2015.

Obviously, the Mayor Albert Robles had a different option in mind when he stated his disappointment on the process at the June 16th City Council Meeting . “I am thoroughly disappointed that 2 weeks later we still don’t have these ballots counted.” said Robles.

Dear challenged the Mayor on June 16, 2015 and threatened to sue the City of Carson for misconduct if they proceeded to install Hilton.

. Apparently, the installation that appeared to take place on the 16th was actually an appointment so the City Council could continue to operate while Dear carefully counted the votes.

At the June 16th City Council meeting Jawane Hilton was appointed to fill the council seat until his foreseeable installation took place the following week. Hilton stated, “What took place last time (June 16, 2015) was an appointment.”

On June 19, 2015 there was a Notice of Special Meeting to be held on June 23, 2015 disseminated on behalf of the Carson City Council signed by Dear.

On Tuesday when this reporter called to confirm the meeting place and time she was told that there was no meeting.

Sure, they’re a little, well, obsessive about working out. But we envy them! “The Saving Grace” Humility-The Art

Hello Carson Courier Readers! Today is a great day to be great!

My article for this issue has changed direction.

Look out for part two of “Making the Most Out of Your Hospital Stay-A Nurses Perspective” in the next issue as promised. For this issue I felt a need to focus on the topic of humility in the nursing profession.

Humility is not an easily acquired skill and to have a profession that requires a humble attitude is even harder. The nursing profession mandates a profound amount of humility. It is at the most difficult times that nurses are required to demonstrate “the art.”

Humility is indeed an “art” because everyone does not have the ability to know or experience it. Humility is defined as a modest or low view of one’s own importance, humbleness, or shyness.

Another definition of humility is the “quality of being courteously respectful of others.”

Many people view the nursing profession as one of utmost importance and highly educated. On television some nurses are portrayed as boisterous, in charge, detail driven men and women and sometimes insensitive. In all honesty, there are nurses that exemplify both attributes-humility and the worldview.

Servitude is the mainstay of nursing and can be displayed with the washing of the patient’s feet, giving a bed bath, answering call lights, or picking up a dirty food tray.

Though the nursing profession requires many years of specialized education, food trays, bed baths, and answering call lights are normally not the most important aspect of patient care for the registered nurse but these functions are not to be overlooked. It is easy for the educated to feel that performing these duties are beneath the scope of practice without the “art of humility”

within. Humility cannot be escaped as a registered nurseeven those that don’t have the innate skill will have to acquire it to survive as a registered nurse.

I discovered the importance of humility in 2013 and having saving grace when I became the nurse asking for blankets, food, and other survival materials for my mother who was at the last stages of living. The nurses taught me what I had been doing as a registered nurse for over 20 years but lacked the knowledge of its importance-how this demonstration could help to make patients and families feel better even at their final moments.

As a patient the exchange of appreciation with a “thank you” for the duties that the nurses perform is all that is needed. Appreciation is the payment that nurses need to continue and because of the art of humility many don’t expect it. Humility is servitude and many believe that being humble means that one is at the bottom of the totem pole. However, even when we are at the foot of the bed and perhaps washing the feet of patients is when we demonstrate our most humble moments and it is during those humble moments that we are elevated the most!

cally include the NBA, NFL, MLB. Not to mention the NHL, MLS and PGA. 3 initials across the board, which collaboratively hold countless nostalgic memories in sports history.

From these initials, opportunity has harvested, from the initial germination of talent. This talent breeds hard work in individual athletes who have a goal in mind.

In our local high schools, each year athletes receive opportunity to maximize their potential in athletics.

Those who do great, usually live as if they already have reached their goals, yet it's still not good enough. This leads to a competitive nature, unmatched, because hard work can only outwork talent. As talent works hard, you become a professional in your sport.

With resilience, it is in the mind where value resides in athletes.

Through athletics, our local and global community is able to spend time developing the universal transferable skills of mental strength and physical strength. These skills develop a legacy of leaders, who are able to offer collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity to any professional work environment. The discipline of the mind is what brings success.

As we enter the Summer of 2015, high school and community sports programs are relentlessly chasing success in their sport. We look forward to following these programs and the empowering activities they are participating in. With athletics creating many opportunities for talented and hardworking athletes, this American dream brings you closer to the reality, the process, of competing every day.

Athletes, who sharpen their abilities with this type of focus, also will understand what it means to: Learn to Earn. Commonly this will depend on what the knowledge is and what it being earned.

However knowing that all knowledge is good knowledge, we can have an even larger understanding as to what is right and what is wrong. In sports, jobs, families alike, it is the energy that you put into it, that will harvest an uncontended amount of results.

These experiences must create change in how things were previously approached.

Just moments after the USC Trojans got live ESPNU commitments from defensive lineman Rasheem Green and linebacker John Houston, Serra’s Deontay Burnett committed to the Trojans an advanced blueshirt scholarship.

Burnett is a three-star wide receiver in the 247Sports Composite, ranked as the 85th best player in the state of California.

He committed to Washington State way back in July of 2014, and just this past weekend went on an official visit to Michigan that had some thinking he was flipping to the Wolverines Burnett denied those rumors on Twitter, and three days later shocks the recruiting world by putting on a cardinal and gold cap as an addition to

Since Burnett did not have an official visit or an arranged in-home visit, he is eligible for the advance scholarship.

USC will be able to bring him on as a scholarship player after the first day of fall camp, making him eligible to play in 2015, but as an inital scholarship counter for the 2016 recruiting cycle.

All in all, Burnett will be the ninth member of the Serra Cavaliers on the USC roster and the fourth of the 2015 class alongside Green, Houston and preferred walkon commit Caleb Wilson.

Repair walls filled with dents, dings, and scuffs, and you’ll make rooms look young and fresh and maintain the value of your home.

Fortunately, repairing walls is a good weekend warrior project.

Here’s how to fix your home’s face in a hurry.

Patch Drywall to Smooth Walls A putty knife, spackle, or joint compound can repair wall damage that ages a room.

• Dents and dings: A quart of spackle ($11) and a putty knife can fill dozens of small wall indentations.

Spackle adheres to painted walls better than joint compound, though it takes a bit longer to dry. Cut wall repair time by thoroughly wiping away excess spackle.

• Fist-sized holes: Joint compound is your best bet when covering the mesh or drywall patches that cover big holes. You’ll need at least two thin coats of compound and fine grit sandpaper to blend repairs into the rest of the wall.

• Nail pops: Nail pops travel in packs: Rarely do you see just one. To repair walls pocked with pops, hammer the popped nail back into the wall or pull it out with a needlenose pliers; refasten the drywall to the nearest stud with a couple of screws, then fill dents with two or three coats of joint compound. Sand until smooth and flush with the rest of the wall, then repaint.

Remove Marks for a Clean Start Microfiber cloths are little miracles that erase the evidence of a childhood well spent, drawing on and caroming off walls.

To get rid of scuff marks and fingerprints: • Spray an all-purpose cleaner onto the cloth (never directly onto walls to avoid drips) and swipe the scuff.

(Test a hidden spot to make sure the cleaner doesn’t take off paint with the mark.)

• Pour a little dish soap onto a damp cloth and wipe the mark.

• Dip a sponge into an earth-friendly and slightly abrasive paste of dish soap, baking soda, and water, and gently scrub grime.

• To repair walls decorated with crayon marks, dab

toothpaste onto a towel or toothbrush and scrub marks.

• Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser ($3), the best instant wall cleaner around. Wet and wring the eraser before attacking scuffs.

Touch Up What You Can’t Wipe Out Prepare for inevitable touchups by keeping leftover paint or at least recording the paint number and/or formula (paint names change). Don’t have the original? Scrape off a little and ask your paint store to match it.

For touch-ups, use the same type of brush or roller the original painter used.

Feather the paint from the outside borders in.

If touch-ups stand out, paint the entire wall, making sure to paint corner to corner and avoid splatters onto the ceiling and adjacent walls.

I graduated college and life threw me a curve ball. Now what? I was prepared. I was ready to start my career that following Monday right after graduation until I was not hired. Not because I was not qualified. More so, it is competitive. Not because I was not called for a few interviews.

More so, the interviews I did get, I was so passionate and anxious that it likely rubbed people the wrong way and may have even came off as desperate.

Now, that passion is still there but it is more controlled.

Not getting the job I planned to get altered my plan but my goals remain the same. Along the way, I took on a public relations/ marketing position which did not pay but positioned me with experience that helps me build my brand. That position actually led to my meeting the publisher of the Carson Courier and opened another door which gives me experience and further develops my brand.

Deciding to wear a few different hats was at first uncomfortable. When people would ask me “well what outcome do you see with this, what outcome do you see with that?” I felt boxed in

There’s a burger buzz about a better tasting burger in Carson.

Being an 11 year old burger lover, I thought I’d go give them a chat.

PJ’s Grill Burgers and Dogs, a family business has been open for 8 weeks.

It’s “a great family experience and great burgers!’’ says Angel a worker at this friendly family oriented burger and hot dog spot. Owners Phillip and Jessica Johnson decided to open up PJ’S because they figured they wanted their own concept, not just another food chain or franchise.

PJ’S is not only the talk of the town because they have great homestyle burgers and hot dogs but they are also giving back to their community. PJ’S is donating free meals to students at Broadacres Avenue Elementary School.

Kids who have perfect attendance and high academic scores receive free meals at PJ’s.

If you get a chance to stop by don’t forget to try OJ’S FAVORITE and their TURKEY BURGERS. As PJ’S is on the rise owners Phillip and Jessica Johnson look forward to opening more in other communities.

Why We Should Recycle

If we do not recycle then not only today will be harmed with waste but the future generations will also.

Recycling is basically turning used materials Aleysha Brown that are labeled “Recyclable” into your local waste facility. If you turn in your recyclable materials it will probably be used to make containers and other materials for new products.

If you recycle you are helping this world become better so your life can become better.

Recycling is not only about taking it to your local waste facility but is also buying products that have already been recycled. Today if you really pay attention then you

will notice that most of today’s containers have already been

used and recycled about 1-2 times.

I highly recommend that you use recycled bottles and containers now in days because you are saving this planet again.

About 50% of Americans recycle daily.

But 13% out of 100% don’t recycle at all. The advantages of recycling everyday are 81% helps reproduce landfills, 69% saves trees, 62% conserves energy, 42% creates jobs, and 100% makes money.

People say we need money to survive and we need trees to make money. How about we make that our motivation to recycle.

I am sure that we want money and jobs so recycle. If my family can do it, I am pretty sure you can do it.

In Loving Memory

Ms. Particia Joyce Kakita, career teacher at Stephen White Middle School passed away on May 27, 2015 at Torrance hospital. She went to the hospital suffering from symptoms related to Alzheimers and peacefully passed away in her sleep.

Kakita taught Special Education, History, and Leadership while at White Middle School. She taught for more than 20 years and is best known for her extra-curricular involvement in Drill Team and Leadership. As the advisor for the Stephen White Middle School Drill Team, Kakita ensured that all the students needs were met, that the school supported the Drill Team, and that the Drill team remained in compliance. imani Brown As a young girl Kikta participated in drill team at Gardena High School.

According to fellow teacher and former student Jamie Ergina Solis, “She had a passion for drill and wanted to keep the program alive.” Solis added, “She was loving, giving, and caring. She put her heart into the leadership class and the drill team.”

Before becoming a teacher, Kakita was a pharmacist. As a teacher, she never looked back. She leaves a school full of students, teachers, faculty and staff who are better because she dedicated herself to White Middle School. She will always be lovingly remembered and sorely missed.
