It worked the North Island Main Trunk, initially based at Taihape. Whilst under overhaul in November 1948, the loco was altered to burn

oil instead of coal, the feed water pumps were replaced with an exhaust steam injector, and the streamlining was removed. Oil was used as a fuel from World War II on, due to coal shortages. The large firebox was at the limit for hand-firing on coal. - Courtesy www.mainlinesteam.co.nz

Welcome to Greymouth The heart of the West Coast Greymouth was founded in 1865, in the giddy days of the goldrushes. It flooded almost immediately, and these days the town is protected by a large floodwall, perfect for daytime strolls. It is also the start-end of the Tranz Alpine — recognised as one of the top train trips in the world — and the new

West Coast Wilderness Trail cycleway, which heads south through sand dunes, forest, and wetlands to the town of Ross. Greymouth is well served by restaurants and bars, with car parking aplenty. Check out the Left Bank Art Gallery or the private galleries, as well as the talented jade carvers. Greymouth is also the perfect base for the more adventurous who are keen to try out mountainbike

Welcome to the Grey District that has many hidden treasures, fabulous hospitality, places to explore, relax and remember. There are not many places where you could be the only person on the beach or be 10 minutes from the native bush. Water sports at

Lake Brunner or cruising the Coast Road drive one of the top drives in the world, the Tranz Alpine Train trip also rated one of the top train trips in the world. These are just a few examples along with the West Coast Wilderness Trail, and many other cycle and walking tracks

tracks, kayaking, rafting, four wheel motorbikes or even knife making. The i-Site at the railway station will point you in the right direction. At night, enjoy a movie at one of two boutique cinemas at the Regent Theatre. Enjoy the laid back lifestyle on your trip — there is not even a set of traffic lights.

to suit all abilities. If you are a history lover, look no further with many rich historic sites to explore. I am fortunate to have travelled to many places in the world but coming home and being lucky enough to raise my children in this beautiful place and be Mayor of the

Grey District is a great privilege. It is always a pleasure to welcome visitors to our district and to showcase its uniqueness. Enjoy your time here with us. Mayor Tania Gibson

Greymouth Walks KING DOMAIN WALK

FLOODWALL

WOODS CREEK

POINT ELIZABETH

Turn off Mount Street. A zigzag uphill track passed by four lookouts. First lookout after a five minute walk provides a view of the town centre and the Grey River. Ten minutes from the first lookout is another rest area which provides a view of central Greymouth. From this point, the track is not as well formed but is easily negotiated by most walkers. After ten minutes from the previous lookout, a rock outcrop gives an excellent view of Cobden and a further five minutes reaches the last lookout, providing spectacular views of the lower Grey Valley areas.

Stroll the floodwall in Greymouth, reading about the town’s past as you go thanks to large interpretation panels. Coal, gold, trains — even Chinatown — all feature, with some panels in Chinese. The floodwall also marks the start of the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail — after about 20 minutes you will pass the working fishing port, before the track meets the long, wild beaches.

Follow the signs to Shantytown and keep going, 22km from town. This 45 minute walk includes tunnels dug by 19th century goldminers and native bush. The walk is suitable for people with medium fitness and perfect for school age children. A torch is handy to look into the tunnels.

Head to North Beach Road, Cobden (about 6km): 1 hour 45 minutes one way. A stunning coastal/bush walk with spectacular views of the coastline. Goes all the way to the beachside town of Rapahoe.

West Coast Wilderness Trail Opened progressively since 2013, the West Coast Wilderness Trial spans 139km, all the way from Greymouth to Ross. The three-day ride follows, in part, tracks carved by pioneering goldminers. Travel through dense rainforest, glacial rivers, lakes and wetlands, with views from the mountains to the sea. The trail starts at Greymouth and traverses Kumara en route to Hokitika before finishing in Ross. Visit www.westcoastwildernesstrail.co.nz

Greymouth Breakwater A great place to visit. Take in the fresh smell of sea air, the sound of crashing waves against rocks and admire the surf. Commonly known as the tiphead to the locals it has stunning views of Mt Cook and

12

the Southern Alps, giving the perception of mountains meeting sea. Whether you choose to visit the Northern (Shipwreck Point) or Southern Breakwater or both, the views and the experience will

not disappoint. If your timing is right make sure you get a good position on the viewing platform to witness a fishing vessel cross over the bar where the sea and river meet.

Take a bike ride out at sunset or, for a unique experience, why not visit on a wild and rugged day and from the comfort of your vehicle be in awe of the power of wind and sea creating massive swells.

Kahuna Board Riders Club Photos: Jeff Jones

The Kahuna Board Riders Club, was formed in 1981, to promote surfing on the West Coast, raise the profile of surfing & local surfers and have fun. 41 years later, the goals have been more than achieved. We will be celebrating the 40th anniversary (albeit one year late) This February, due to C19. The clubs first National invitation surfing competition, known as the “Go for Gold” was held in 1982 and sponsored by a local businessman Terry Sweetman (Sweetman Corcoran and Associates) The first prize in the open event was one ounce of pure West Coast gold, of major value at the time! Sponsorship for the events grades was obtained from throughout the New Zealand surfing industry and local Coast businesses. The New Zealand Surfing association then asked the Club it they would become part of the National Surfing Pro-Am circuit, we agreed, and we became international. The first Pro-Am event held in Greymouth was

won by a Gisborne surfer Steve Colbert, against competitors from New Zealand and Australia. The surf god ‘Kahuna’ provided the most perfect surf we have seen for an events final. The clubs ‘Go for Gold’ was so successful and unique given the locations surfed, and of course the prizes, it became an annual event and one of the drawcard competitions on the South Island surfing circuit. It ran for over 30 years however and sadly it also became too complicated to run. These events over the years, bought thousands of dollars into the Greymouth & Cobden communities, with each competition attracting up to 200 visitors. Currently with approximately 55 financial members, the club has grown into a community orientated club, with some exciting initiatives and competitions. The Go for Gold, is now called the “Go for Toast” and is now the clubs Annual Memorial Competition and prize giving, usually held in December or January each

year dependant upon surf conditions. The name of this important memorial event follows the naming theme of the Clubs famous “Go for Gold” competition, where that Gold Bullion was on the line. The ‘Go for Toast’ was originally named in memorial of Brent “Toast” Mahuika, and now is held in memory of all past club members who are no longer with us. From its inception the event has a more laid-back feel than the hotly competed Go for Gold, but over time and with the club no longer hosting the Go for Gold, the Go for Toast has become the club’s main annual competition and is a major drawcard for West Coast surfers. Between competitions and other club social activities, the Kahuna Board Riders Club, true to its first initiatives of 1981 run Learn to Surf programmes. These have been running for 13 years and are attracting a large number of young and older surfers, and for a number of years a very high proportion of young women. These run primarily in the

summer when the water temps are warm and conditions are favourable and have attracted many new members joining the club and being introduced to the sport and lifestyle of surfing. The KBC club house at the end of the Cobden Breakwater was originally a car paint and panel shop in the 1950’s, then became an engineering workshop for a local Cobden man Max Galo. The Greymouth Council and Harbour board agreed to the KBC taking control of the shed in 1982 and we’ve never looked back. Members have been instrumental in beautifying the breakwater for locals and visitors alike by creating the substantial gardens along the breakwater and a perfect lawn for visitors to sit upon while eating their Friday night fish & chips. The club members have renovated the building several times over the past 40 years, with thousands of hours of volunteer (and sometimes paid) time and energy to what you see now.

Traverse through beautiful West Coast rainforest and listen to the chorus of native birds. This easy half hour walk will reward you with a stunning waterfall at the end.

You will hear the gush of this beautiful waterfall moments before you witness the spectacular site. Only 10 minutes drive north from Greymouth to the start of the track. Don’t let a rainy day put you off. The more water, the more spectacular the flow will be!

Lake Brunner/ Kotuku Moana (Sea of Herons)

37 Kilometres inland from Greymouth sits the small township of Moana, on the north shore of the scenic Lake Brunner. A popular spot with locals and visitors alike, the lake covers 40km2 and can be fished year round for wild brown trout. There are several excellent walking, hiking and cycling trails. The lake also has great views of mountains and forest, plenty of bays and beaches, so it is ideal for swimming, boating and a variety of water-sports.

16

Hidden

Gems BRUNNER MINE SITE

The Brunner Mine explosion of 1896 is New Zealand’s greatest workplace disaster. Sixtyfive men, virtually everybody underground, died when gas ignited. The site also had the greatest coal production in New Zealand. At its peak over 300 men and boys were employed there, and a range of industries made up the wider complex. Alongside the extraordinary output of coal, coke and bricks were produced in large volumes. Brunner firebricks, in particular, were famous products in their own right and established the reputation of Brunnerton, as it was generally known in the 19th century. The intervention of the Historic Places Trust to save the deteriorating complex in 1978 represents one of the earliest efforts to conserve (and interpret to the public) this country’s industrial heritage on a large scale. Only 12 minutes’ drive from Greymouth, there are lots of mini walks and plenty to explore.

THE COAST ROAD The world famous Pancake Rocks and blowholes at Punakaiki (40 minutes’ drive north) are no doubt on your itinerary. But there are lots of places on the way worth stopping for. Walk miles of sand on the curving beach at Rapahoe, or head off the beaten track to explore the abandoned Ten Mile coal valley, or tramp to Rewanui, an abandoned mining town (access from Dunollie).

Nelson Creek and the Nelson Creek Recreational Reserve Nelson Creek is an excellent spot to go walking, camping and exploring. With historic water races, tunnels, recreational gold fossicking and a number of short walks, there is plenty to do. Some walks in Nelson Creek include: Callaghans Track

Tailrace Walk

Time: 20min return Distance: 900m

Colls Dam Walk

This walk has wheelchair access Time: 40min loop track Distance: 1.1km

Nelson Creek Suspension Bridge The suspension bridge crossing Nelson Creek is a historic bridge. It was originally built in 1872 and has been rebuilt a couple of times, most recently by the New Zealand Forest Service in 1982 using the original plans.

Gold Mining History Nelson Creek has had a varied goldmining history of success and decline from its beginnings in 1865, when it was rushed as a shallow creek working, which yielded shotty coarse gold. Some areas were rich in gold but finds were patchy. At the height of the rush over 1200 miners were scattered throughout Try Again Terrace downstream from Nelson Creek, but numbers fell almost immediately, once the productive ground was worked out.

Nelson Creek Recreational Reserve The campground is next to the creek, where you can go gold panning and has numerous sheltered campsites. You will find clean toilets, children’s play equipment, including a flying fox, BBQs, picnic tables, running water and a swimming hole. A track leads through a tunnel and over a swing bridge to a number of interesting short bush walks. Worth seeing as it has been intensively mined with tunnels, tailraces and hand-stacked tailings. A wheelchair accessible track is easily reached by road and a gold-panning area is signposted. If you choose to stay here please make sure you pay your camping fee and display the honesty receipt where it can be clearly seen. Thank you. Prices: Child 0-16 years $3, Adult $7, Family $18 for up to 4 children. The Nelson Creek Hotel also has a store with bread, milk and butter for those staying at the Camping ground, alongside great hosts, great country pub meals, cold beer and colourful locals.

18

From Greymouth follow SH7 about 25km north to Ngahere. Turn right at the Ngahere-Kopara Road and carry on to the Nelson Creek Settlement. The turn off to access the picnic, camping area and walks is on your left, directly opposite Nelson Creek Hotel. GM111111o

West Coast Gem & Mineral Club The West Coast Gem & Mineral Club, which was established in 1966, is based at Shantytown. Today’s Gem & Mineral Hall was established in the former Rotomanu School, which was relocated to the site in late 1970 and re-furbished in time for the opening of Shantytown in January 1972. Fifty odd years on the Club maintains the same building with modern, well secured displays which include rocks, minerals and fossils from the West Coast region, other parts of New Zealand and overseas. Specimens have either been collected by Club members or donated to the collection. The front (display) section of the Gem & Mineral Hall is open to the public daily as part of the ‘Shantytown Experience.’ The rear section is for Club members only and included a lapidary workshop, storage area and small kitchen. The Club, which is open to all – families welcome – meets at Shantytown on the first Wednesday of each month. On Club nights there is a theme, like ‘silvery rocks’ for the ‘show and tell’ part of the evening and members bring along specimens from their collection for general discussion. Some evenings there is an illustrated talk by a guest speaker regarding an overseas trip or on a topic they have expertise in. Field trips, subject to the weather, are held about every two months on weekend days. Most are day trips but occasionally there are overnight trips further afield.

Club members also attend field trips run by other Clubs (there are many of these around the country) and visit National Rock & Mineral Shows, particularly when held in the South Island. From time to time members also head off overseas, Australia being a popular destination for extended field trips. When Shanytown holds open days for locals, or other special events, the Club often opens its ‘shop’ and runs an advisory service’ at their Gem & Mineral Hall so the public can buy specimens or obtain assistance in identifying rocks they have found (specimen and location of find is required for this). For more information about the West Coast Gem & Mineral Club please contact the Secretary, John Caygill or Treasurer, Heather Muir: email muircaygill@xtra. co.nz OR ‘phone 03 768 4704 OR visit the Club’s Facebook page.

Welcome to

Otira PLACE OF THE TRAVELLERS High in the Southern Alps, between the Otira and the Bealey rivers, and 15 km north of Arthurs Pass sits the small township of Otira. The name Otira literally means “O” (Place of) and “tira” the travellers. From humble beginnings as a stage coach stop on the long journey from Canterbury to the West Coast, Otira grew during construction of the 8.5km railway tunnel underneath the Southern Alps. Construction began in 1907 and the tunnel was finally opened on the 4th August 1923. During this time over 600 workers and their families were housed in Otira. The tunnel was the 7th longest in the world and the longest in the British Empire. It has a gradient of 1 in 33 and it is 4.72 metres high and 4.27 metres wide at rail level. Today less than 100 people inhabit Otira, although the railway station is closed you can observe the Tranz Alpine train as it passes through, and still stay at the Stage Coach Hotel which was built in 1865. People can also visit the former post office which has been refurbished into an art gallery and is now known as the John Burns Gallery of Modern Art.

JAB Gallery features the works of artist John Burns If you are wanting to visit a gallery showing photo perfect landscapes or flowers in a vase, this is definitely not the place for you, avoid it like the plague. However ... if contemporary art is more your thing, you may enjoy a visit ... The artwork is sometimes not pretty, it’s a bit edgy and can be challenging and confronting, humorous, even enlightening but/and its definitely different. It may give you another perspective of the weirdness of some of us. Yes, we are out there amongst you, pretending to be normal. We (family and me) are definitely on the fringes of hillbillies. We drive old trucks, use a coal range for cooking, eat hunted meat and can often be found sitting around an outside fire at night – but no one plays the banjo ... yet. We are open most days, but not always. You may wish to phone first. Please note: don’t get especially dressed up if you come to visit – we won’t be.

From River

Gorge

A West Coast Delicacy Described by some on the West Coast as a religion, whitebaiting is a pastime which consumes many fishermen each spring. Whitebait – tiny, transparent creatures found navigating streams only in spring – are the young of some of New Zealand’s precious native fish. Standing riverside in any weather with a big scoop net is a passion for many who live on the Coast. There are many theories on what makes whitebait ‘run’ in sometimes massive shoals, but no one knows for sure. Have a yarn with a whitebaiter on the riverbank in spring, or try the delicacy at a local café or restaurant. Whitebait is often on the menu in season at many restaurants.

WICKEDLY GOOD BEER FOR THE WILD HEARTED Since starting Hopaholics Brewery and the Taproom at 25 Boundary street one month before the first lock down Sarah and Jason Johnson have learnt a whole lot about setting up a small business. They provide customers with awesome beer and a personal experience that has minimum impact on the environment. Hopaholics brewery is nestled in amongst the bush, just outside Greymouth. Sarah and Jason sell their beer online at hopaholics.co.nz and out of the Taproom and Bar. “It’s like an old-school pub. You can come by yourself and know there’ll be someone you can have a yarn to. It’s friendly and there’s always a bit of banter,” says Jason. Hopaholics Taproom has built a loyal following for their selection of traditional beers, from IPAs to stouts, along with their innovative ‘Weird and Wonderful’ range. Sarah gets excited about creating new brews from all kinds of ingredients – boysenberries, vanilla, cacao nibs and garlic, to name a few. By focusing on a local market Hopaholics has been able to stay true to their ethics

46

Dine in - Eat out

around limiting waste and emissions. “People buy beer by the liter in glass growlers etc. and we encourage customers to return our bottles so we can reuse them”. Visitors often comment that it’s an incredibly friendly place full of good energy and interesting characters. ‘It’s not uncommon to find a minstrel with his bejeweled dog, a generous stranger or a goat leaning at the bar’ Jason says. They have open mic nights on the last Thursday of every month, theme nights, including karma kegs to raise money for charities like the SPCA. Their brand is becoming more widely known, partly due to their daughter Freya managing social media and design work. Reflecting on their business journey so far, the couple describe it as “exciting, unpredictable and fulfilling.” Having survived their share of challenges, Sarah and Jason believe stickability and resilience are two essential attributes. “We are still alive and not majorly in debt so that’s a win given the couple of years we’ve come through,”. As for the future, “we don’t have plans for world domination,” Sarah comments, “I’m actually quite happy catering mainly to the West Coast”.

West Coast Penguins

Blue penguin (Photo: R Long)

Fiordland crested penguin (Photo: I Perkins)

The West Coast is renowned for its coastline and West Coasters are happy, honoured and privileged to share many parts of the coast with penguins, who of course arrived here millions of years before they did. Apart from penguin footprints in the freshly washed sand that you might see during an early morning walk, penguins are rarely seen. Little penguins (also known as blue penguins or kororā) cross the beaches under the cover of darkness, heading out to feed or gather food for their chicks before dawn and returning after dark. Fiordland crested penguins or tawaki may be seen at a couple of coastal locations in South Westland in the afternoon, but again, they are a secretive bird and rarely seen.

The Trust has established that penguins are threatened by humans, firstly in their vehicles on the coast roads and secondly when they allow their dogs to roam in coastal areas.

The West Coast Penguin Trust, established in 2006, looks out for penguins, conducts research and implements practical projects such as penguin protection fences (you might notice them north of Punakaiki and north of Hokitika), awareness signage at beach access points, and an education programme with local schools.

52

As a visitor, you can help! If you’re driving after dark on coast roads, you could slow down a little and keep a look out for a penguin as you drive. A little less speed may give you time to avoid one if it is on the road, which, although rare, is possible. If you have brought your dog with you to enjoy the area, keep it under close control at all times and on a lead in coastal vegetation and on the beach after dark. You can of course help the West Coast Penguin Trust continue to conserve penguins and the coastal habitat with a donation. Thank you! www.westcoastpenguintrust.org.nz/ donate/ INGER PERKINS Manager, West Coast Penguin Trust 03 755 8600 or 027 370 1876
