A passo d’uomo e a lla velocità della luce Giorgio de Finis Esiste un’espressione araba (non ricordo più quale) che potrebbe tradursi come l’esercizio di guardare le cose del proprio cortile con occhi nuovi. È questo che fa James P Graham con il suo cortiletto, il Pianeta Terra.

E non solo perché si dota di una visione a 360 gradi! Guarda il mondo, James, facendosi ora scienziato, ora alchimista, ora druido, forse anche, in ultima istanza, bambino o galattico. Così mi piace raccontarlo questo artista scozzese atterrato in Italia, come un alieno in visita intento a esplorare e spiare un mondo sconosciuto dentro al suo “girello” di cineprese o chiuso nella sua “navicella spaziale” fatta di monitor, finestre aperte su un fuori che è un altrove. È del tutto limitante, a mio avviso, leggere le opere di James P Graham come l’ennesimo tentativo di catturare la bellezza della natura – sia essa il fuoco dei vulcani, l’acqua del mare o il volo notturno della lucciola – sebbene non manchi nelle intenzioni dell’artista la voglia di celebrarla questa bellezza. Come fuorviante sarebbe vedere nell’uso della tecnologia che l’autore mette in campo, una ricerca nella direzione di una restituzione sempre più “spettacolarizzata” del fenomeno naturale, sfida di tutta la produzione cinematografica documentaristica degli ultimi anni, (pre)occupata a mettere la natura “in soggettiva”. Se questo fosse stato lo scopo ultimo di Iddu – la costruzione di un ambiente naturale virtuale immersivo per la stanza di un museo – il lavoro sarebbe già vecchio, superato dall’avvicendarsi di strumenti di ripresa e postproduzione sempre più sofisticati e di nuovi escamotage da dare in pasto a quel pubblico da padiglione delle meraviglie (oggi anche recapitabile a domicilio, via cavo o via parabola satellitare) sempre desideroso, ieri come ora, di farsi illudere e stupire, ma con giochi di prestidigita(lizza)zione mai uguali, pena la fine del teatrino!

Perché il tempo che passa e questa mostra (che è appunto una retrospettiva) ci aiuta a capire meglio il lavoro di James P Graham? Mi viene da dire: perché è innanzitutto un lavoro sul tempo.

Il fatto che le immagini di Iddu probabilmente non sorprenderanno più l’odierna generazione di bulimici di realtà aumentata ed effetti speciali

– l’invecchiare della giostra – ci permette di andare oltre l’effetto luna park prodotto dalla striscia di frame sincronizzati costruita per teletrasportarci in cima allo Stromboli. E vedere la macchina. A pochi anni di distanza la leggerezza dell’immateriale, le immagini virtuali, il software, appaiono meno interessanti, a mio avviso, dell’edificio di tubi catodici, cavi e circuiti realizzato per dar vita allo spettacolo della telecontiguità.

Il circo torna circle, l’hardware riemerge, come nel video che James dedica alla struttura megalitica che appare e scompare per effetto della marea; la storia della tecnica e dell’uomo si contrae, la stanza del computer si avvia a diventare strumento muto al pari degli osservatori astronomici edificati dai costruttori di Stonhenge, civiltà che James richiama da un passato che ci appare remoto, per rimetterle al loro posto, vale a dire accanto a noi, gli uomini pronti a colonizzare Marte, e non solo perché accomunati, gli antichi e i moderni, dall’amore per il silicio. Ne La piccola cosmogonia portatile Raymond Queneau liquida la vicenda umana con un verso: “La scimmia senza sforzo diventò / l'uomo, che un po' più tardi disgregò l'atomo”. Fine della storia. Perché siamo oramai in grado di decidere della nostra estinzione e per il dato antropologico che il cammino evolutivo dell’uomo si interrompe per cedere il passo a quella che potremmo definire una “biologia delle macchine”. Ma le opere di James sono Memento mori “specie specifico” soprattutto perché mettono a confronto due tempi, quello del mondo e il nostro. Le sequenze di polaroid scattate nell’arsenale atomico dismesso di Albion in Francia ci ricordano certo che viviamo sotto la spada di Damocle dell’Olocausto nucleare, ma anche che ciò che può causare rovina, rovina a sua volta. Invecchiano le strutture militari, e i silos che hanno ospitato le testate megatoniche si fanno prima archeologia e poi deserto, natura, senza che nessuna bomba sia stata fatta esplodere. Siamo un accessorio anche per la nostra sparizione.

Guardando la prima volta Losing Seahenge ho trovato strano che dal video l’autore non avesse escluso la parte in cui un uomo incurante della telecamera e del fenomeno che si sta documentando – la magia della

marea che ogni giorno inghiotte un altare circolare di pietra dell’età del bronzo – si aggira tra gli scogli alla ricerca di mitili. Mi sono chiesto: perché James, tanto più che la sequenza è velocizzata, ha accolto l’intruso? Perché non ha tagliato in montaggio quell’attraversamento non previsto del quadro? Lo scattino che avrebbe prodotto il cut sarebbe stato notato solo dall’occhio più attento. Poi ho capito che questo non era un “errore”, una svista, ma la chiave per decifrare l’opera. Che ci mostra due tempi diversi in azione, quello del mare che avanza e quello dell’uomo che passa ed esce di campo. I due tempi si ignorano, è la ripresa velocizzata che li mette in relazione. Il tempo dell’uomo attraversa il tempo della natura senza quasi lasciare traccia. Se poi dalle maree alziamo gli occhi al cielo, seguendo la traiettoria che le parabole “disfunzionali” ci indicano, le distanze si fanno incomparabili. Le antenne satellitari specchianti che danno il titolo alla mostra sono totem, menhir, altari che anelano al cielo, una comunicazione con le “sfere infinite” che non è materia che attiene alla sfera tecnologica, per quanto la nostra epoca sia disposta a celebrarla.

Le domande che pone e da cui muove James P Graham sono in fondo quelle di sempre, di volta in volta declinate da religione, filosofia e scienza, chi siamo, dove andiamo, siamo soli nell’universo? C’è la possibilità di una Natura senza quell’accidente della storia del mondo (l’uomo) capace di esperirla? E come fare a “seguir virtute e canoscenza” lasciandosi alle spalle le colonne d’Ercole del proprio paradigma, o forse della propria storia naturale? Per viaggiare nel tempo oltre che nello spazio, come nella sequenza finale di 2001 Odissea nello Spazio, alla ricerca del mistero dell’universo o solo (tornando a casa dal lungo viaggio) di quello della nascita umana? Da quanto detto sopra si capisce anche perché abbiamo voluto collocare questa mostra in un edificio storico come Palazzo Cozza Caposavi; le sale di questa residenza della metà del sedicesimo secolo ci aiutano a cogliere nelle opere di James P Graham lo stesso spirito che fu all’origine dello studiolo di Cosimo I, delle prime wunderkammern, dei proto-laboratori scientifici, dei gabinetti di storia naturale, quando la storia naturale ancora non era una disciplina separata dal resto della conoscenza, e ci si poteva interrogare delle cose della natura e di quelle dell’uomo e di Dio senza paura di illeciti sconfinamenti.

From wa lking pace to the speed of light Giorgio de Finis There comes to mind an Arabic saying (I forget from where) which describes looking around your own backyard with a fresh gaze. That’s exactly what James P Graham is doing in his backyard commonly called Planet Earth…and not only because he is seeing everything in 360 degrees! He does look… sometimes with the eye of a scientist… or alchemist… occasionally druid, but ultimately as a child or space-traveller.

That’s how I access the vision of this Scottish artist now so firmly planted on Italian soil; like some kind of alien exploring with intent, scrutinising an interior world from his Cinematic baby stroller or enclosed in a space ship made from old TV monitors. His is a window on an alternative world.

It would be misleading, in my opinion, to interpret James P Graham’s work just as an attempt to simply capture the beauty within the natural world. Within his volcanic fire, limpid sea, firefly flightpaths, beauty is clearly acknowledged. His use of sophisticated technology is not simply employed to accentuate natural phenomena. Rendering the awe of nature is the ultimate objective of many in the moving image industry. If the ultimate purpose of Iddu was to construct a virtual reality nature park within a museum, the work would already seem old and passé, surpassed by the ever changing world of sophisticated post production wizardry to supply an insatiable public their fix of enhanced illusions created with the flick of an app, instantly viewable via Google Glass lament the end of cinema!.

Why has the passage of time rendered James P Graham’s work more poignant? (By the way, this exhibition is a retrospective). In my opinion the reason is simple, these are works which examine time itself. The fact is that Iddu’s sequences will no longer wow today’s generation of virtual reality junkies. Iddu’s carousel of ageing TV monitors allows us to get over the ‘Luna Park’ effect produced by a strip of synchronised frames designed to take us into the fiery cauldron of Stromboli. Today’s technology, with its hyperreal imagery, renders the immaterial with less gravitas than the old-tech cable and cathode tube sparking up James’

video work. The circle turns full circle, and the hardware re-emerges, as observed in his video dedicated to a megalithic structure which appears and disappears with the tides. Here Man is confronted by a different technology, the circle of TV monitors cedes to the astronomical observations of Stonehenge’s master builders, a civilisation that James recalls from a past that seems remote. But, compare this to our aspiration for colonising Mars, aren’t ancient and modern man sharing their aspiration for the love of silicon? Raymond Queneau’s poem Petite cosmogonie portative liquifies the human era with the verse: “The monkey seamlessly becomes the man, then a little later disrupts the atom”. End of story. Witness we are now capable of rendering our own extinction, generating new anthropological data that substitutes man’s natural evolutionary path with a biology generated from a technological provenance. James’ works are ‘Memento Mori’, they remind us of our mortality, contrasting two forms of time, Geological time and Man’s time.

The polaroid sequences of the decommissioned atomic arsenal at Albion in France certainly reminds us not only that the sword of Damocles threatens us with nuclear holocaust, but also that what can cause ruin, ruins itself. The ageing of military structures and silos that have carried megaton warheads will become first archeological sites, then desert, finally nature. Without exploding even one bomb, we are the accessory of our own disappearance.

The first time I watched Losing Seahenge I found it strange that a sequence in which a man carelessly walks in front of the camera lens was not edited out. The magic of the tide swallowing a circular Bronze age altar stone on a daily basis is contrasted with a man combing the beach for mussels! I asked, “Why have you bothered to welcome this intruder into your timelapse sequence and not leave him on the cutting room floor?” The instant that could have been edited would have only been noticed by the most discerning of eyes. Then I realised that it was not an error, or an oversight, but the key for defining the work. Here we have the two ‘times’ in action, the incoming tide and then Man passing

through the field of vision. They are oblivious to one another, as well as to the timelapse sequence that has juxtaposed them. Man’s time crosses Geological time without leaving any trace. From the tidal reach we raise our gaze to the sky, following the path of ‘dysfunctional’ satellite dishes showing us incomprehensible distances. These mirrored antennae that have given the exhibition its title are totems, menhirs, altars yearning to heaven, communicating with the ‘infinite sphere’... notably a phenomenon totally unrelated to any ‘techno sphere’, however much technology would define our current era.

The questions that arise and motivate James P Graham are fundamental, the ones frequently posed by religion, philosophy and science. Who are we... where are we going… are we alone in the universe? Is there the possibility that Nature can exist outside the accident of world history and man’s unique capability for experiencing it? Should we ‘pursue a path of virtue and knowledge’ leaving behind the paradigm set by the Pillars of Hercules, or just follow natural history? To travel through time rather than through space, as in the final sequence of Kublick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, reaches out either into the mystery of the universe, or from the dawn of humanity.

Previous discourse indicates the purpose of staging this exhibition within the historic walls of Palazzo Cozza Caposavi. With his artworks installed in the mid 16th century rooms, James P Graham invokes the first wunderkammer of Cosimo I de’ Medici. Witness the prototype scientific laboratory, and the cabinets of natural history, when natural history was still umbilically joined to the rest of knowledge, and when inquiry could be made into natural objects, whether God’s or man’s, without fear of legal encroachment.

J ames P Grah am Biografia James P Graham lavora da 15 anni come artista multimediale principalmente nei settori del cinema, della fotografia, del disegno e della scultura. A 18 anni, dopo aver completato gli studi all'Eton College, si trasferisce a Parigi per iniziare a lavorare nel campo fotografico. Dopo 7 anni di lavoro come professionista, torna a Londra e ottiene un impiego come regista di film commerciali, lavorando contemporaneamente al completamento di commesse fotografiche internazionali nel campo editoriale, pubblicitario e fotografico. Nel 2000 si prende due anni sabbatici durante i quali rifiuta tutto il lavoro commerciale per concentrarsi sulla creazione della sua prima opera d'arte di una certa rilevanza, ultimata nel 2002-2003. Si trattava di video sperimentali in Super 8, riprodotti su schermi che mostravano paesaggi dal "significato metafisico e ontologico".

Il suo primo lavoro di notevole importanza, Iddu (2007), è stato realizzato in un arco temporale di 5 anni, girato sulle pendici del vulcano attivo Stromboli ed è stato finanziato congiuntamente dall'Arts Council of England e dalla NESTA Foundation. Questa installazione video è stata esposta nel 2007 alla MUDAM Guest House, Musee d'Art Moderne (MUDAM) in Lussemburgo, sotto forma di una tenda di 9 m di diametro e di 3 m di altezza. Iddu, è stata successivamente esposta nel 2010 alla Busan Biennial, nella Corea del Sud, a cura di Akio Suzuki.

Nel 2008 Graham si dedica alla scultura e crea le sue prime Suspended Animations in cui mette in evidenza le qualità “viventi” della pietra. Ogni sasso presenta un foro prodotto naturalmente che gli antichi credevano possedesse proprietà guaritrici. Le forme scultoree somigliano a strutture scheletriche deformate che aleggiano sospese a pochi centimetri dal suolo. Queste sculture non sono prive di un legame con il suo film Losing Seahenge (1999) in cui l'artista denuncia chiaramente la sacrilega distruzione di un luogo di sepoltura antico di 4000 anni trasformato in uno sterile "zoo geologico" e diventato ormai un sito perso per sempre a causa dei continui lavori di scavo. Vista la sua formazione tradizionale nel campo fotografico e cinematografico, Graham ama in

modo particolare la combinazione di processi analogici e tecnologia altamente sofisticata. Di recente alcuni progetti dell'artista, come Albion (2006) e la serie continua di stampe Voyage, sono stati realizzati esclusivamente mediante polaroid, le quali sono ritenute l'unico mezzo visivo in grado di catturare in modo efficace il campo energetico di un luogo o di una persona. Allo stesso modo è stato realizzato Pilgrimage (2009), opera generata durante una passeggiata di cinque giorni lungo la famosa linea energetica di St. Michael, in Inghilterra.

Utilizzando principalmente i paesaggi e la natura, l'opera di Graham rimanda al concetto a cui viene fatto spesso riferimento, ma ormai in disuso, di "scientia sacra", permeando di significato metafisico e ontologico i luoghi e gli oggetti prescelti. Questo ha portato l'artista a sviluppare un interesse per le forme energetiche inusuali. Ciò è dimostrato dalla struttura delle sue opere e dalla forma dei materiali utilizzati e si manifesta nella mente dell'osservatore, con effetti che possono andare da un'attrazione sottilmente percettibile a un totale coinvolgimento. L'opera di Graham si basa principalmente su due fondamentali fattori. Il primo è l'“intuizione” l'elemento catalizzatore per la creazione di qualsiasi opera d'arte, mentre il secondo è la "risonanza" il risultato dell'opera così come espresso attraverso la mente dell'osservatore. Totem Refuge è la prima di una serie di sculture a utilizzare un'antenna parabolica, un oggetto moderno della vita di tutti i giorni, che l’artista invita a considerare in un contesto alternativo.

Installata al MAAM nel dicembre 2013, fa specificatamente riferimento alla creazione di Metropoliz, uno spazio abitativo come rifugio per i suoi abitanti “meticci”. Le antenne satellitari sono allestite sotto forma di totem, per aiutare i residenti a ritrovare l'energia frammentata dei loro “antenati”, sia fisica che metafisica. Un'antenna parabolica orizzontale nella parte più alta della scultura ricorda un altare, aggiungendo un elemento alchimistico e ritualistico all'opera. L’ultima versione del progetto, intitolata Calling for the infinite sphere e presentata per la prima volta in occasione della mostra, si ispira al Libro dei ventiquattro filosofi di Ermete Trimegisto.

J ames P Grah am Biography James P Graham has been working full time as a multimedia artist for fifteen years working principally in film, photography, drawing & sculpture. Having left Eton College at 18 he went to Paris to start a career in photography. After 7 years professional work he returned to London in 1994 to direct TV Commercials, and in parallel he was awarded international photographic commissions in editorial, and advertising photography. In 2000 he took a long two year sabbatical where he refused all commercial work in order to concentrate on spawning his first purposeful artworks in 2002-03. These were screen based experimental filmworks using Super 8 film and framed within landscape of 'metaphysical and ontological significance'.

His first large scale work Iddu (2007) was made over 5 years on the landscape of the active volcano Stromboli in Italy and jointly funded through the Arts Council of England and the NESTA Foundation. This 360 degree multi screen film installation was first installed at MUDAM Guest House, Musee d’Art Moderne (MUDAM) Luxembourg in 2007 in the form of a 9m diameter 3m high tent. Iddu was subsequently exhibited at the Busan Biennial, South Korea 2010, curated by Akio Suzuki.

In 2008 he turned to sculpture and made the first of his Suspended

Animation sculptures, where Graham enhances the living qualities of stone. Every flint contains a naturally made hole which ancients believed possessed healing qualities. The sculptural forms resemble warped skeletal frames imperceptibly hovering above the ground. This is not unrelated to his film Losing Seahenge (1999) which clearly laments the sacrilegious removal of a 4000 year old burial site to a sterile ‘geological zoo’, a site now lost for ever as a result of its autopsy and excavation.

Having trained traditionally in photography and filmmaking, Graham particularly enjoys the interface between analogue processes and high end technology. Recently, many of his projects like Albion (2006), and the ongoing Voyage print series, have been made uniquely using polaroid, which is believed to be the only visual medium to successfully

capture the energetic field of a place or person. Likewise Pilgrimage (2009) was created during a five day walk along the famous St. Michael ley-line Mainly using landscape and nature, his work explores and references the now disused term ‘scientia sacra’, imbuing chosen locations and objects with almost metaphysical and ontological significance, leading to an interest in unusual energy forms. This can be perceived through the configuration and material form of the works, and manifested in the mind of the viewer. The results can be enticingly intangible, and in some cases, totally immersive. Graham sites two important factors fundamental to his work. First, ‘intuition’ - the catalyst behind the creation of every artwork, and second, ‘resonance’ - the result of the work as expressed through the viewer.

Totem Refuge is the first of a series of sculptures which uses the satellite dish, a modern everyday object, and invites the viewer to consider it in an alternative context. Installed at MAAM December 2013, it specifically references the transcultural building Space Metropoliz as the refuge of its multicultural inhabitants. The satellites are set up in the form of a totem for residents to rebuild the fragmented energy of their ancestry, whether physical or metaphysical. A horizontal satellite dish at the top of the sculpture suggests an altar, adding an alchemical and ritualistic element to the work. The latest permutation of this project develops this theme further, suggesting the use of the satellite dish as a portal with which to attempt contact with a higher plane of existence.

The title Calling the Infinite Sphere has also been given to the Graham's first solo exhibition in Italy (curated by Giorgio de Finis). It refers to a famous quote attributed to the mystical, legendary ancient sage Hermes Trismegistus from the Book of 24 Philosophers. "God is an infinite Sphere, whose centre is everywhere and circumference nowhere".

Questo lavoro si basa su un controverso tipo di sepoltura a terra dell'età del bronzo e lo utilizza come allusione a un potenziale avvento di un disastro e dell'annientamento ecologico. Il paesaggio ripreso nel filmato mostra la marea che copre lentamente un cerchio composto da pali di legno con una grande piattaforma in legno di quercia al centro. Come sale la marea, appaiono nel filmato lampi bianchi che suggeriscono un cambiamento o la sparizione del mondo così come lo conosciamo. Si crede che questo possa essere un luogo di sepoltura "a cielo", in cui il corpo viene lasciato su un altare di legno finché gli uccelli non lo consumano e la vita dello spirito continua sulla terra. Il basamento centrale è la radice di quercia capovolta ed è circondata da 55 pali. "Seahenge, nome con cui è noto ufficiosamente il sito, fu scoperto nel 1999 dalla marea crescente che trascinava via la torba in cui era sepolto. Fu poi spostato, non senza polemiche, dal luogo in cui risiedeva da 4000 anni dall'English Heritage a Flag Fen, con grande rabbia dei druidi, che considerarono questo un atto di profanazione. Chiare tracce di strumenti hanno fornito importanti informazioni sul metodo di lavorazione del legno e sui metodi di costruzione durante il primo periodo dell'Età del bronzo. Questa è la prima volta che segni degli strumenti ben conservati provenienti da un sito dell'Età del bronzo, vengono studiati nel Regno Unito. Non ci sono al momento progetti per riportare questo manufatto in riva al mare o mostrarlo in un museo. In Losing Seahenge Graham continua la sua esplorazione dello "spazio sacro", dell'energia esoterica e della coscienza, interrogandosi sulla posizione dell'uomo di fronte alla vastità del cosmo.

This work uses a controversial bronze age burial ground as allusion to the potential advent of ecological disaster and annihilation. Timelapse filmed landscape shows the tide slowly covering a circle of timber stakes with a large central oak platform. As the tide rises, there are white flashes in the footage suggesting a change or disappearance of the world as we know it.

It is believed that this may be a ‘sky’ burial site, where the corpse is left on a wooden altar to be consumed by the birds and therefore continue the spirit’s cycle back to the earth. The central plinth is the upside down root of an oak tree and is surrounded by 55 posts.

‘Seahenge’, as the site is unofficially known, was uncovered in 1999 by the rising tide which washed away the peat within which it was buried.

It was then controversially moved from its 4000 year old home by English Heritage to Flag Fen, much to the anger of the Druids, who considered this a desecrational act. Clear tool marks have provided important information on Early Bronze Age wood working and construction methods. This is the first time that well preserved tool marks from a complete Early Bronze Age site have been be studied in Britain. There are currently no plans to either return it to the sea, or exhibit it in a Museum.

Spazio sacro illuminato dall'insetto perfetto 2004 Due opere realizzate con penna su carta. 150cm x 100cm con cornice bianca e vetro L'interfaccia tra la Natura e la Sacralità diventa ancora più ricca di patos mentre il mondo assiste alla profanazione e alla riduzione della biodiversità. Con questa idea in mente James P Graham ha sviluppato un progetto ispirato dall'osservazione delle lucciole, il cui lampeggiare sincrono sembra trasmettere un'energia complessa o "essenza". I disegni che ne derivano sono realizzati da gesti ripetuti con una sottilissima penna a inchiostro bianca. I tratti diventano più concentrati verso la parte centrale del foglio permeando l'opera di un'atmosfera magnetica e meditativa.

Svolgendo il proprio lavoro in un'era critica, gli artisti operano in una società che ha regalato loro l'elevato status di “persone prive di tabù" all'interno di spazi sacri dove creano i propri tratti e interventi di alchimia. Questi spazi ermetici offrono una morale impermeabile e una libertà etica che permette loro di visitare ed esprimere commenti su qualsiasi problema, sotto la precaria protezione dell'“Arte”.

Sacred space illuminated by the perfect insect, 2004 Two works, whitepen on black paper. 150cm x 100cm framed in white with museum glass The interface between Nature and the Sacred becomes ever more poignant as the world witnesses the desecration and reduction of biodiversity. With this in mind, James P Graham developed a project inspired from the observation of fireflies whose syncronous flashing seemed to relay a complex energy or ‘essence’. The resulting drawings are constructed from repeating gestures made with a fine white inked pen.

The marks become more concentrated towards the centre of the paper giving the work a mesmeric and meditational feel. Working at a critical time artists operate within a society which has awarded them high ‘taboo free’ status within cathedral-like spaces where they can create their alchemical marks and interventions. These hermetic places give them an impermeable moral and ethical liberty to visit and comment on any issues – with all the artworks sheltered under ‘Art’s’ precarious protection.

Art is called to question but not obliged to answer!

Stromboli, in cui sono state realizzate queste due opere fotografiche nel 2004/05, è stato la principale fonte di ispirazione di James P Graham per quasi 5 anni. "Adamo" ed "Eva" rappresentano un riferimento al paesaggio primordiale e all'unione unica dei moltissimi elementi presenti sull'isola.

Lo sfondo di entrambe le opere ricorda quello di Blake e Caspar David Friedrich, un omaggio all’equilibrio perfetto di uomo e donna.

“Adam” and “Eve” reference the primordial landscape and unique conjugation of elements that are so concentrated on the island. Both are set ona background reminiscent of Blake and Caspar David Friedrich, an equal and complimentary balance between male and female.

Questo progetto affronta l'appropriazione effimera e indebita dell'utilizzo del suolo. Comprende una raccolta di foto polaroid in bianco e nero che ritraggono silos nucleari e rampe di lancio per missili costruite in Francia sotto de Gaulle, durante la Guerra fredda.

Quel che rimane dei detriti di cemento armato è il severo promemoria di misure di protezione adottate in quel periodo o di paura e sfiducia; adesso tutto ciò appare come se fosse stato attaccato da un nemico. La terra stessa è depositaria di una propria memoria e questa storia penetra nella vera essenza della terra, rivelandosi a coloro che hanno la capacità di percepirla. La purificazione e la guarigione della terra sono più che familiari a noi che stiamo tornando a riconsiderare e a rivalutare l'ambiente e il modo in cui lo abbiamo distrutto nel corso del tempo.

This project addresses the transient appropriation and misappropriation of land use. It comprises a collection of black & white polaroids taken of nuclear silos and missile launch pads constructed in de Gaulle’s France during the cold war.

The remnants of reinforced concrete debris are the stark reminder of protective measures taken in times or fear and mistrust, now appearing as though they had indeed been attacked by the enemy. Land itself holds a memory of its own, and that history permeates into the very essence of the aura encompassing the land, revealing itself to those who have the intuition to perceive it. Purification and healing of land is something more familiar to us today as we return to consider and value the environment and our ravage of it over the course of time.

Iddu (Lui) è un film a 360 gradi. Il titolo fa riferimento al nome indigeno dato all'isola di Stromboli, un piccolo tratto di terra di forma conica formatasi durante due millenni e mezzo di costante attività vulcanica. L'isola assume il ruolo principale in questo capolavoro, la risposta dell'artista alla seducente combinazione di intensa bellezza e forte ebbrezza, derivate dalla visione della maestosa e imprevedibile potenza della natura, su cui l'umanità non ha controllo...

La realizzazione di questo film è durata quattro anni. Il video comprende una combinazione di vedute panoramiche a 360 e 180 gradi, effettuate con più videocamere, con una pellicola Super-8.

Spiegandosi lentamente, queste vedute rivelano un panorama che abbraccia l'osservatore, ritraendo un luogo in cui rifugiarsi o un posto instabile accanto a una minacciosa caldaia di magma fuso. Graham trasmette in maniera efficace una sobria conoscenza di questo paesaggio, nata dalla breve collaborazione con i vulcanologi del luogo e dalle foto scattate all'attività esplosiva con videocamere ad altissima velocità attivate da un sismometro.

Facendo riferimento al paesaggio, Iddu è stato concepito come metafora della psiche umana e dell'acquisizione della saggezza, o "scientia sacra", come descritto da Tommaso d'Aquino nel suo commento sulla metafisica aristostelica, secondo la quale la "conoscenza" o l'"acquisizione della saggezza" viene rivelata in maniera intuitiva dal divino ed è strettamente connessa alla fede religiosa. La provenienza dell'opera può essere anche rintracciata nel concetto di Edmund Burke del sublime, spiegato nel suo famoso libro A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (Un'indagine filosofica sull'origine delle nostre idee di Sublime e

Bello) (1756). Il sottofondo musicale deriva da una collaborazione tra James P Graham e il celebre artista del suono Akio Suzuki, che ha visitato Stromboli per eseguire la musica in loco sul vulcano. Il suo strumento "Analapos" era posizionato molto vicino al cratere. In questo modo è stato possibile catturare i venti ed emettere una serie unica di suoni, una vera arpa eolica. Questi suoni pongono indubbiamente l'opera a un livello superiore, quasi primordiale e sacrale.

"Iddu" fu esposto per la prima volta con la sua panoramica completa a 360 gradi al Musée d’Art Moderne Luxembourg (MUDAM) nel 2007, a seguire fu proiettato alla Busan Biennial 2010 in Sud Corea. Una versione a doppio schermo venne adattata nell'estate del 2010 per la mostra Volcano: Turner to Warhol al Compton Verney UK.

The title refers to the local name for the island of Stromboli, a small conical land mass formed by 2.5 millennia of constant volcanic activity. The island assumes the leading role in this artwork, the artist’s response to the seductive combination of intense beauty and thrill of danger after witnessing Nature’s unpredictable, awe-inspiring demonstration of supernatural energy, over which mankind has no control....

Made over a four-year period, the film consists of a combination of 360degree and 180-degree panoramic multi-camera views captured on Super-8 film. Slowly unfurling these reveal an enveloping vista

portraying a place of sanctuary, or a precarious spot beside a threatening cauldron of glowing molten magma. Graham effectively conveys an understated knowledge of this landscape after working briefly with the local volcanologists, capturing images of explosive activity with ultra-high speed cameras triggered remotely by a seismometer.

Referencing landscape, Iddu has been conceived as metaphor for the human psyche and acquisition of wisdom – or ‘scientia sacra’, as described by Thomas Aquinas in his commentary on Aristotelian metaphysics, where 'Knowledge' or 'acquisition of wisdom' is revealed intuitively by the divine, and closely connected with religious faith.

Provenance of the work can also be traced to Edmund Burke's concept of the sublime as set out in his famous book A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1756).

The sound is collaboration between James P Graham and the celebrated sound artist Akio Suzuki who visited Stromboli to perform in situ on the volcano. His instrument ‘Analapos’ was installed at close proximity to the crater, capturing the available winds and emitting a unique series of sounds - a veritable Aeolian harp. These sounds undoubtedly infuse the work with an extra layer, which seems both primordial and sacred.

Iddu was first displayed in its full 360-degree vista at Musée d’Art Moderne Luxembourg (MUDAM) in 2007 and was then exhibited in South Korea at the Busan Biennial 2010. A dual-screen version was adapted for the exhibition Volcano: Turner to Warhol at Compton Verney UK summer 2010.

Animazioni sospese, 2009 Silice, filo di acciaio inossidabile, sale L’opera venne mostrata per la prima volta a Londra nel 2008 durante l'esposizione Space Now. Una versione più grande di 110 pietre fu commissionata per la 2010 Busan Biennale. Quando eravamo bambini e trovavamo una pietra con un foro, pensavamo fosse segno di buon auspicio. Le civiltà antiche credevano che le pietre forate avessero proprietà curative. Il foro di queste pietre era stato creato dalla natura, con l'erosione, nel corso di milioni di anni ed è qui che viene fatto passare il filo di acciaio che tiene la scultura sospesa sul pavimento. In quest'opera, che viene definita "suspended animation", è presente un'implicita connessione tra umanità e natura. La forma della scultura sembra seguire i contorni di un'insolita colonna che comprende un numero variabile di vertebre prive di carne… un ammasso di pietre morte. A livello molecolare, pietre e ossa hanno alcune proprietà comuni e la percezione che la pietra sia un oggetto "morto" viene qui messa in discussione dalla mancanza di frizione dal filo di acciaio che tiene sospese le pietre, permettendo il loro movimento con una leggerissima corrente d'aria.

When we were children finding a stone with a hole in it was always considered to be good luck. Ancient civilisations believed that stones with holes in them possessed healing properties. The hole in each stone has been created naturally through erosion over millions of years, and through this is threaded the wire which suspends it just above the floor.

In this work, which is referred to as a suspended animation, there is an inferred connection between humanity and nature. The shape of the sculpture seems to follow the contours of a strange column comprising varying numbers of vertabrae, found bereft of flesh…a pile of dead stones. On a molecular level, stones and bones have many properties in common, and the perception of a stone being a ‘dead’ object, is challenged here, as the lack of friction in the wire suspending the stones allows their movement within a slightest air current. First exhibited in London at the exhibition Space Now! (2008), curated by Caroline Douglas. A large version comprised of 110 stones was commissioned and exhibited at the 2010 Busan Biennal, South Korea.

Cervello d'oro, 2010 Filo d'oro, sospeso.

Nel suo lavoro The golden brain... retracing Ariadne (Il Cervello d'oro... rievocando Arianna)", James P Graham unisce mito e alchimia per esplorare l'esistenza di fenomeni al di fuori della nostra comprensione logica o credo. Sospeso a poca distanza dal pavimento della galleria si trova un groviglio di fili dorati che ha una forma simile a una testa.

L'opera ricorda un conduttore di energia o un cervello, che sfida la gravità con la sua leggerezza. Qui Graham si ispira al famoso filo di Arianna che ha aiutato Teseo durante la fuga dal labirinto e lo trasforma in reperto, endemico e alchemico, del labirinto della mente.

L'oro è associato in alchimia all'elisir di lunga vita ed è il metallo per i problemi di cuore (molto appropriato nel caso dell'amore non corrisposto di Arianna per Teseo). Questa allusione alle energie esistenti al di fuori dalla nostra comprensione è uno dei temi chiave dei lavori di Graham. Il declino del misticismo e l'eccessiva laicizzazione dell'era moderna post-cartesiana hanno portato ad una mancanza di conoscenza di questo tipo di fenomeni, a cui si può accedere tramite l'illuminazione, ovvero tramite la saggezza o la comprensione che questo è dato e non acquisito con la conoscenza.

Nel XII secolo, nel suo scritto Summae Theologicae, San Tommaso d'Aquino ha definito questo concetto "scientia sacra" o scienza sacra.

Di recente, il filosofo sufico Neyyed Hossein Nasr ha dato una spiegazione esaustiva di questo concetto per il lettore moderno nel suo libro Knowledge and the Sacred (Conoscenza e sacralità).

Anti-concettualista proclamato, Graham incoraggia i visitatori a cercare il "sentimento" piuttosto che il "significato" nelle sue opere, in quanto solamente un'opera può comunicare l'indefinibile o l'inesprimibile senza bisogno di spiegazioni accademiche. L'autore individua costantemente nozioni di "spazio sacro", partendo dal contenuto e permeandone la galleria, in cui si percepisce un'atmosfera di ritualità e contemplazione.

Golden Brain, 2010 Suspended ball of Golden thread In his work “The golden brain... retracing Ariadne” James P Graham combines myth and alchemy to explore the existence of phenomena outside our logical understanding or belief. Suspended low above the floor of the gallery is a tangled mass of golden thread shaped loosely into the form of a head. The piece feels like an energy conductor or brain, defying gravity with its hovering weightlessness. Here Graham muses over Ariadne’s famous thread that enabled Theseus’ escape from the labyrinth, and transforms it into an alchemical relic endemic of the labyrinth found in the mind. Gold is associated alchemically with the elixir of life, as well as being the metal for heart issues so perfectly appropriate to Ariadne's unrequited love for Theseus.

This allusion to energies existing outside of our comprehension is one of the key themes running through Graham’s work. Decline in mysticism and excessive secularisation in the post Cartesian modern era has resulted in a dearth in awareness about these types of phenomena; but they can be accessed through illumination, that is, wisdom or comprehension that is given, not acquired from knowledge. The 13th Century Saint Thomas Aquinas famously defined this in his Summae

Theologicae as ‘scientia sacra’ or sacred science. More recently, the Sufi philosopher Neyyed Hossein Nasr gives a complete explanation for the modern reader in his book Knowledge and the Sacred.

A self proclaimed anti-conceptualist, Graham encourages viewers to look for ‘feeling’ rather than ‘meaning’ within his artworks, because uniquely an artwork can communicate the indefinable or inexpressible without always needing literal academic explanation. He constantly identifies notions of ‘sacred space’, starting from within the content and permeating the gallery space where an atmosphere of ritual and contemplation can often be perceived.

Il richiamo della sfera infinita, 2015 Antenna parabolica placcata argento, lampada a LED, piedistallo di legno Ad un primo sguardo, chi ammira l'opera si confronta con un oggetto del nostro quotidiano… lucido, alla moda, posizionato su un piedistallo elegante, che segue la pura tradizione pop-art quella dei ready made.

Potrebbe rappresentare la nostra dipendenza e la nostra adorazione per la tecnologia? Lavorare per tre anni in una zona antica dell'Etruria ha aumentato la sensibilità di Graham per le connessioni esoteriche tra il nostro pianeta e il cosmo nella sua vastità. Graham ha trasformato tre antenne paraboliche da portali ricettivi a riflessivi. La chiave del suo lavoro è una curiosa riflessione sulla luce emessa dall'illuminazione della parabola, creata dalla nichelatura screziata che adorna l'intera opera. Il titolo fa riferimento a una famosa citazione attribuita all'antico filosofo egizio, sacerdote e alchimista Ermete Trismegisto: "Dio è una sfera infinita, il centro di quello che è in ogni angolo e la circonferenza del nulla".

Il lavoro fa allusione all'idea predominante di Ermete di un universo unificato in cui tutto ciò che succede nel paradiso si rifletteva in quello che gli uomini vedevano sulla terra e, più importante ancora, nell'anima dell'uomo.

Calling for the Infinite Sphere, 2015 Nickel plated satellite dish, LED lamp, wooden plinth At first glance the viewer is confronted with a common everyday object... shiny, glamorised, set on a sleek plinth in the tradition of the ready-made or pop-art. Could it represent our addiction to and worship of technology? Working for three years in the ancient land of Etruria has heightened Graham’s sensitivity to the esoteric connection between our planet and the wider cosmos. He has transformed 3 satellite dishes from receptive to reflective portals. Key to the work is the curious reflection of light emitting from the illumination of the dish, caused by the mottled nickel plating which adorns the entire work. The title references a famous quote attributed to the ancient Egyptian philosopher, priest and alchemist Hermes Trismegistus. “God is an infinite sphere, the centre of which is everywhere and the circumference nowhere”. The work alludes to Hermes’ predominating idea of a unified universe where occurences in the heavens were reflected in what we see on Earth, and most importantly, within the soul of man.

La mostra/Exhibits Palazzo Cozza Caposavi Piazza San Rocco, Bolsena 21/06/2015 - 21/09/2015 Il Palazzo Cozza Caposavi - dichiarato monumento nazionale e facente parte dell'Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane - fu fatto erigere dal Cardinale Tiberio Crispo nel 1561 quale dimora personale, ma egli ci visse appena un anno. I Bolsenesi - infastiditi dalla sua superbia - fecero rimuovere il porporato dalla carica di Governatore del Patrimonio di San Pietro.

In quell'occasione l'edificio venne diviso in due differenti palazzi: quello verso la rocca divenne proprietà Cozza mentre quello verso la fontana medicea divenne proprietà Caposavi.

The Palace Cozza Caposavi - declared a national monument and part of the Italian Historic Houses Association - was erected in 1561

by Cardinal Tiberio Crispo for use as his personal home , but he lived there only one year . In fact , the “Bolsenesi” (people living in Bolsena) - annoyed by his arrogance - removed the cardinal Tiberio from the office of Governor of the Patrimony of St. Peter.

At that time the building was divided into two different buildings: the one towards the castle became the property Cozza while that towards the Medici fountain became the property Caposavi.
