Let t er f r om t h e Pu blish er Dear Readers, A new era for t he Irish Arts & Entertainment begins wit h t his issue. W e have relocat ed t o a fairly small t own in t he Appalachian M ount ains in Virginia. This paln has been in t he works for a few weeks and it had a few glit ches. The biggest problem was t he fact t hat we had no int ernet for almost one week which delayed t his issue. As we have ment ioned in our past t wo issues in t his feat ure, we are now expanding t hroughout t he ent ire US W est Coast and not just California, Oregon and Washingt on, we have also expanded int o Arizona and Neveda .

By t he end of 2025, we are on t rack t o expand again t o coverage t hroughout t he Unit ed St at es. W e have already engaged affiliat es, represent at ives and writ ers around t he US and we are going t o st art our Nat ional Issue by December.

To be quit e frank, t his is act ually t he only way t hat we will be able t o survive as a profit able ent erprise. There has been a demographic shift in Sout hern California and a change in public act ivit y since t he pandemic. W elost afew pubs asadvert isers because of t heir int ernal changes and problems as well. Also, t here is a shift in how advert isers spend t heir budget s. W e are keeping pace and our websit es are being updat ed and we are doing more on Social M edia t o reach our audience. W e need t o expand our reach so we can cont inue our work t o bring Irish art s, event s, int erviews and t ravel feat ures t o our readers. Also, t his has been a profit able business for 34 years and we have a legacy t o prot ect . The Irish t hemed cont ent t hat we offer has a wide audience; far beyond SoCal so we are confident t hat we have a market .

W e already have readers and subscribers in about 6 count ries and in 14 st at es. W e will st art delving int o more cont ent of Irish int erest and cont inue t o deliver a digit al magazine t hat is fun, int erest ing and readable.

W e have new feat ures coming t oo: a Celt ic Crossword Puzzle, a feat ure t hat we did for years is being revived; t he Pan Irish Digest and much more.

1990 heralded a sea-change at Áras an Uacht aráin. That year, t he Labour Part y candidat e M ary Robinson?s win saw not only Ireland?s first female Head of St at e, but it also inaugurat ed arguably t he best decade in Irish hist ory. It was a decade of t ransformat ion for young Irish people who had, up t o t hen, been forced t o emigrat e en masse. An advanced economy formed by a newly educat ed populat ion revealed a new confidence in t he people. From t he mid-1990s, a long, hard peace was wrought in t he Nort h. That M ary Robinson was succeeded by anot her woman, M ary M cAleese, in 1997 was not so much symbolic of change, but of a New Ireland, one t hat encouraged personal fulfilment and at t empt ed t o confront it s t roubled past ; t he presidency managed t o emblemat ise t hat . A flint y Belfast woman wit h sound polit ical ant ennae, M cAleese?s t iming was impeccable: she was elect ed t he year before t he signing of t he Good Friday Agreement and played a key role as a liaison t hroughout t he peace negot iat ions, and aft er it t o bed in t he agreement ?s provisions.

M ichael D. Higgins succeeded M ary M cAleese in 2011, becoming t he second Labour Part y candidat e t o break t he t radit ion of Fianna Fáil nominat ions holding t he office. That occurred against t he backdrop of an implosion of t he Fianna Fáil part y machine aft er t he banking crisis and t he propert y crash ? for which t he elect orat e roundly punished Fianna Fáil (t he part y declined t o even field a candidat e).

Higgins?vict ory in 2011, and his landslide re-elect ion in 2018 (aft er an elect ion was forced by Sinn Féin, whose candidat e polled 6%) was t he st rongest mandat e an Irish president has ever had. Higgins managed, over 14 years, t o excit e t he populat ion and speak for large swat hes of it , and t o rise t o t he underest imat ed challenges of t he office. That he consist ent ly waded int o cont roversial areas pleased t he body polit ic a good deal more t han successive government s; he has been t he people?s president . So, since 1990, we have had president s who have considerably mat ched t he mood of t he count ry. M aybe t here is a lesson t here for t hose eyeing a run for ?t he park?(as t he office is known, for it s locat ion in Phoenix Park)?

The front -runner in t his year?s elect ion unt il August 14t h was M airead M cGuinness. Did she answer how and why she could speak for t oday?s Ireland? She and her t eam were surely aware t hat , alt hough t he dut ies of t he president are largely symbolic, if a candidat e seems t oo wedded t o one aspect of Irish ident it y t hat can paint t hem as t oo niche. In M cGuinness?case, t hat was her significant success in European polit ics. It was not clear t hat t hat experience, wit h it s percept ion of elit ism, could inspire a generat ion who have been deprived of a fair access t o housing. It may be unfair t o expect a president , who is wit hout governing powers, t o succour such an ext ensive nat ional crisis, but percept ions fundament ally mat t er for Ireland?s symbolic president ial role.

During his presidency M ichael D. Higgins publicly referred t o t he housing disast er as our ?great , great failure?,and t hat ?housing and t he basic needs of societ y should never have been left t o t he market place. It is t he mad speculat ive money t hat is dest roying our count ry, which we are welcoming, which we shouldn?t be?.That speech may have achieved not hing t angible, including for a generat ion locked out of home ownership. St ill, many of t hem would have applauded M ichael D. for making it , and many would have difficult y imagining European Commissioner M airead M cGuinness saying anyt hing like it .

As it happens, on August 14t h, M cGuinness wit hdrew her candidacy, cit ing healt h issues. Fine Gael, most ly t he second biggest part y in t he count ry since t he foundat ion of t he st at e, has never won t he presidency. W it h M cGuinness? depart ure, many in t he part y consider t hat t heir best hope t o buck t hat t rend is dashed. Fine Gael may well now nominat e M onaghan woman Heat her Humphreys ? and may find her a st rong candidat e.

For now, t hough, t he field is now wide open, and polling day, 11 November 2025, is approaching. M any people have been moot ed but , at t ime of writ ing, none of t he major part ies except Labour has nominat ed a candidat e. W hat is t he hesit at ion?

The st ory of Adi Roche?s candidacy can shed some light on t his. Roche was an unsuccessful candidat e in t he 1997 president ial elect ion where she saw her support plummet aft er spurious allegat ions about her brot her, a soldier in t he Irish army. He lat er received a government apology, but t he damage was done t o his sist er. The cont roversy knocked her out of t he running for t he presidency, and she has spoken about t he t raumat ic effect t he at t acks on her int egrit y had on her.

The Irish president ial elect ion is among t he nast iest polit ical cont est s in t he count ry, in which t he polit ical is personalised.

Seamus Heaney, a hugely popular figure in Ireland t hroughout his lifet ime, when asked if he would run for president , replied t hat he would consider it as a cross-part y nominat ion ? in ot her words if t here was all but no cont est .

Apparent ly fewer and fewer want t o ent er t he bear-pit of a president ial campaign. The forensic examinat ion of one?s personal and professional life, t he spinning t o manufact ure scandals, are t oo off-put t ing. Have we made candidacy for t he office t oo perilous t o ent ice t he best person t o be Head of St at e?

The st ories are heart breaking. One Irish grandfat her in New York, here for more t han 30 years, has already lost t he Social Securit y and M edicare benefit s he spent a lifet ime earning.

Anot her man chose t o self-deport , t errified of being shipped t o a remot e det ent ion facilit y he compared t o a concent rat ion camp. In some cases, bot h parent s have been t aken, leaving families scrambling for lawyers and guardianship arrangement s.

Irish immigrant s who have lived and worked in t he Unit ed St at es for decades are now facing sudden arrest , det ent ion, and deport at ion at t he hands of Immigrat ion and Cust oms Enforcement (ICE). M any of t hese men and women are business owners, employers, parent s, and grandparent s? people who believed t hey were prot ect ed under deferred act ion agreement s t hat recognized t heir visa overst ays but allowed t hem t o remain for humanit arian reasons.

Deferred act ion came wit h condit ions: immigrant s were required t o report t o ICE every six mont hs, a syst em many likened t o parole. In good fait h, t hey complied. For years, t hey were t old t hat if t hey followed t he rules, t hey could cont inue t heir lives wit hout fear.

But now, t hose same check-ins have become t raps. People who walk t hrough t he door t o meet t heir obligat ions are handcuffed, locked in det ent ion cent ers for weeks, and quiet ly deport ed. Families are oft en left blindsided.

Somet imes t hey receive a hurried phone call; ot her t imes t hey hear not hing. Children are left wit hout parent s, spouses

This crackdown is not limit ed t o Lat inos? it is reaching int o Irish, It alian, and ot her immigrant communit ies t hat once felt insulat ed. Fear now shadows Irish cult ural life: at t endance at dances, Gaelic sport ing event s, and social gat herings has fallen as people worry t hat ICE raids could follow t hem even int o t hose safe spaces.

Adding t o t he alarm, t he administ rat ion has revived denat uralizat ion effort s? a program t hat can st rip nat uralized Americans of t heir cit izenship. Once reserved for ext reme cases, advocat es warn t hat even a clerical mist ake on an immigrat ion form filled out decades ago could now be used t o t ake away what was once considered permanent and secure: U.S. cit izenship it self.

This is not just a policy debat e? it is a moral one. Families who built t heir lives here, who t rust ed t he government ?s word, are now being t orn apart . A syst em once grounded in fairness and humanit arian discret ion has become a machine of fear and uncert aint y.

As one advocat e put it : ?These people kept t heir end of t he bargain. Now t he government has broken it s promise.?

The Method

To make t his I recommend also making t he dressing in advance t his way it st ays cold and keeps in t he fridge unt il you are ready for it First off, preheat t he oven t o 180 degrees, 350°F. Remove t he chicken from t he fridge and gat her t he coat ing mix. Gent ly remove t he chicken t highs one by one and place t hem int o t he flour mix and coat t hem in t he flour well, t hen shake off any excess flour (my t ip: put int o a sieve and shake).

Then bring a frying pan t o a medium t o high heat , add a drizzle of oil, carefully place t he chicken in t he pan and cook for five minut es on each side. Transfer t o an oven-proof dish and cook for a furt her t en minut es.

W hilst t he Chicken is cooking in t he oven, bring a medium-sized pot of salt ed wat er t o t he boil and add t he broccoli. Cook for t hree minut es, add t he peas, and cook for t wo more minut es. Turn off t he heat and st rain t hrough a colander.

Check your chicken; it should be cooked, and remove it from t he oven.

You are now ready t o present t he dish, so gat her t wo large plat es and wit h t he red cabbage and rocket , if you want , you can light ly dress wit h a lit t le oil, t hen place ont o t he cent re of t he plat e, sprinkle t he peas around t he plat e, followed by t he pomegranat e seeds, t hen t he broccoli.

Place t he chicken on t op of t he Salad. Remove t he dressing from t he fridge and spoon t he desired amount on t op of t he chicken. Sprinkle a lit t le harrissa on t he dressing and around t he plat e for an added t ouch. Sprinkle a lit t le curry powder and more harrissa around t he plat e, and garnish wit h a few picked coriander leaves.

The eagerly ant icipat ed "Peaky Blinders" film, which has been operat ing under t he working t it le, "The Immort al M an," is set t o bring t he iconic Shelby family saga t o t he big screen.

W hile an official, definit ive t it le has yet t o be publicly confirmed, "The Immort al M an" has been widely used in product ion report s and is st rongly rumored t o be t he final name.

Cillian M urphy will reprise his acclaimed role as Thomas Shelby .Joining him are several familiar faces from t he series, including Sophie Rundle as Ada Thorne (née Shelby), Ned Dennehy as Charlie St rong ,Packy Leeas, Johnny Dogs, St ephen Graham as Hayden St agg, and Ian Peck as Curly.

The film will also int roduce new t alent s t o t he "Peaky Blinders" universe, wit h confirmed addit ions such as Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Rot h, Jay Lycurgo, and Barry Keoghan in new roles.

The Irish Rap Trio Kneecap Cancels U.S. Tour Amid Legal Troubles and Polit ical M aelst rom The Belfast -based Irish rap and hip-hop group Kneecap has canceled t heir scheduled t our of t he Unit ed St at es, a decision t hat comes amidst a confluence of legal challenges in t he Unit ed Kingdom and escalat ing condemnat ion from conservat ive circles on bot h sides of t he At lant ic. W hile init ial speculat ion point ed t owards visa complicat ions, t he band has clarified t hat t he primary reason for t he cancellat ion is an impending court hearing in London involving one of it s members.

The t our, which was set t o kick off in Oct ober, was called off due t o t he proximit y of a court dat e for band member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under t he name M o Chara. He is facing allegat ions of displaying a flag in support of a proscribed organizat ion, Hezbollah, during a concert .
