This issue marks two very important milestones for us! First, it is our 31st Anniversary issue We started with Volume 1, # 1 in September of 1992 in Santa Monica as a tabloid paper called The Irish News!

Secondly, weare officially growing our reach and becoming a national American Irish digital magazine We already have subscribers in 20 states and five countries so this change should be well received,

Our content has always been about great Irish topics so that will remain However, wehave been fairly California-centric on our coverage of events through our years of publishing and that has changed,, We will start writing more about local events and personalities around the United States. Our Calendar will be expanded and our advertising base will continue to grow

One very exciting development is that our good friend, former advertiser and savvy entrepreneur, Jim McMahon has joined us as our Marketing and Sales Director McMahon has a wealth of international sales experiencein many fields, and will be setting up offices in Redding, California and Warrenpoint, Ireland.

Most of us are aw are of The Molly Maguires; t hanks m ost ly t o a classic fict ionalized film of t he sam e nam e. We can st art here w it h t his epic st ruggle!

The Molly Maguires w ere a secret ive Irish-Am erican labor organizat ion t hat em erged in t he ant hracit e coal regions of Pennsylvania during t he m id-19t h cent ury. The group is know n for it s involvem ent in labor act ivsm and oft en resort ing t o violent m eans t o address t he harsh w orking condit ions and low w ages faced by coal m iners.

Background on Mine Ow ners, Wages, and Working Condit ions:The ant hracit e coal indust ry w as a m ajor econom ic force in Pennsylvania during t he 19t h cent ury. The m ine ow ners, w ho w ere prim arily indust rialist s and capit alist s, sought t o m axim ize t heir profit s by keeping w ages low and w orking condit ions poor. Miners, predom inant ly Irish im m igrant s, faced dangerous w orking environm ent s, long hours, low pay, and lack of basic am enit ies.

The Molly Maguires em erged as a response t o t hese dire condit ions Nam ed aft er a secret societ y from Ireland t hat resist ed landlords during t he Great Fam ine, t he Am erican Molly Maguires w ere believed t o have engaged in act s of violence, sabot age, and int im idat ion against m ine ow ners and t heir agent s These act ions w ere seen as a w ay t o fight back against t he

exploit at ion and abuse faced by t he m iners. The Molly Maguires' act ivit ies included at t acks on com pany propert y, int im idat ion of st rikebreakers, and t arget ed killings of m ine forem en and ot her officials. Tensions bet w een t he Molly Maguires and t he m ine ow ners reached a boiling point . The m ine ow ners, support ed by local law enforcem ent and Pinkert on det ect ives, init iat ed a crackdow n on t he organizat ion A series of t rials w ere held in t he 1870s, result ing in t he convict ion and execut ion of several alleged Molly Maguires The t rials w ere cont roversial and m arred by allegat ions of w it ness t am pering and unfair legal proceedings

Connery as Jack Kehoe, a charact er based on a real-life figure associat ed w it h t he Molly Maguires. The film direct ed by Mart in Rit t focuses on t he t ensions bet w een t he m iners and t he m ine ow ners, as w ell as t he conflict w it hin t he Irish-Am erican com m unit y about how best t o resist exploit at ion. The film explores t hem es of social injust ice, labor right s, and t he challenges faced by im m igrant w orkers in a host ile environm ent . Early Life and Tragedies:

Mary Harris Jones, lat er know n as Mot her Jones, w as born on August 1, 1837, in Count y Cork, Ireland. She w as one of four children in her fam ily. Her fam ily faced econom ic hardship, and as a young girl, she w it nessed t he devast at ing im pact of t he Irish Pot at o Fam ine. In t he early 1850s, she im m igrat ed t o Canada and lat er m oved t o t he Unit ed St at es. She set t led in Michigan and t rained as a t eacher. In 1861, she m arried George Jones, an ironw orker and union organizer. The couple had four children: t w o sons, Terence and Richard, and t w o daught ers, Cat herine and Mary Tragedy st ruck her fam ily in a series of event s The w orst of t hese w as in in 1867 w hen her husband and four children fell vict im t o a yellow fever epidem ic t hat sw ept t hrough Mem phis w here t he young fam ily had set t led Mary herself survived t he illness, but her husband and all of her children died

The young Irish w idow m oved t o Chicago and w orked as a t each and began her act ivism m ot ivat ed by her grief and her desire t i ease t he pain povert y and injust ice t hat she saw , Short ly aft er, in 1871, t he Great Chicago Fire devast at ed t he cit y of Chicago, dest roying m any hom es and businesses, including Mary Jones's ow n This event left her hom eless and facing even m ore adversit y These t ragic event s had a profound im pact on Mary Jones's life She developed an even st ronger sense of em pat hy and a fierce det erm inat ion t o fight for t he right s of w orkers and t o im prove t heir living and w orking condit ions She channeled her grief and anger int o her act ivism , event ually becom ing one of t he m ost prom inent and influent ial labor organizers in Am erican hist ory She becam e involved in t he labor m ovem ent and organized num erous st rikes and prot est s t o fight for bet t er w orking condit ions, fair w ages, and im proved t reat m ent of w orkers She w as know n for her passionat e speeches and her abilit y t o inspire w orkers t o st and up against pow erful corporat e int erest s and corrupt polit icians

Mother Jones continued

Starting in 1872, Mother Jones dedicated herself to the causeof organizing in theUS Labor Movement Shewas tireless in her work for the protection and rights of workers and against injustice in general Despite facing legal challenges and imprisonment, Mother Jones continued her work as a labor and social activist, advocating for workers' rights and social justice until her death in 1930

Early on in her work, shegained National Prominence In 1902, Mother Jones was called " the most dangerous woman in America" by theWest Virginian district attorney, ReeseBlizzard, during an anti-labor trial. Shehad been arrested on the flimsy chargeof ignoring an injunction prohibiting gathering to protest during a strke, This label was intended to paint her as a radical and agitator

The outcome of thetrial was that Mother Jones was found guilty of violating the injunction and was sentenced to twenty years in prison. However, this harsh sentence drew national attention and widespread public sympathy for her cause. Eventually, her sentence was commuted, and she was released from prison after serving about a year.

Just a few of the early and historically important actions, causes and strikes in which she played a significant role are outlined here. It is amazing that Mother Jones work spanned decades!

Just some of her most notable actions & vcontributions include:

Coal Miners' Strikeof 1902: Mother Jones played a significant role in organizing coal miners during theCoal Miners' Strikeof 1902, which sought to improveworking conditions, reduce work hours, and secure fair wages for miners.

Textile Workers' Strikeof 1903: Jones was a key figurein theTextile Workers' Strikeof 1903 in Philadelphia, whereshe supported thedemands of femaletextile workers for better pay and improved working conditions

Ludlow Massacre (1914): One of the most tragic events shewas involved in was theLudlow Massacre in Colorado. Shesupported striking coal miners and their families who were living in tent colonies. Theconflict escalated, and theColorado National Guard attack-ed thetent colony, resulting in numerous deaths, including women and children.

Steel Strike of 1919: Mother Jones continued her advocacy during theSteel Strikeof 1919, whereshe worked to organize steel workers and their families in their fight for better wages and working conditions

Child Labor Activism: Jones was also known for her campaigns against child labor. No doubt theloss of her own children made this a very

personal effort Shefirmly believed that children should be in schools rather than working in dangerous and exploitative conditions in factories and mines.Her fierce dedication to workers' rights earned her thenickname " the most dangerous woman in America." There arescores of Irish Born and Irish Americans who have served their country and the American Labor Movement. Here are but a few of these illustrious patriots.

Terence Powderly (1849-1924):

Powderly was an Irish-American labor leader and the head of the Knights of Labor, one of the largest and most important labor organizations of the late 19th century.

James Connolly (1868-1916):

An Irish revolutionary and socialist, Connolly was a leader of the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916 Healso had ties to theAmerican labor movement through his involvement with the Socialist Labor Party and the Industrial Workers of the World.

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (1890-1964):

Born in New Hampshire to an Irish immigrant family, Flynn was a labor leader and women's rights activist. She was a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and worked closely with the Industrial Workers of the World

Harry Bridges (1901-1990):

An Australian-born labor leader of Irish descent, Bridges was a key figure in the labor movement on the West Coast of the United States. He founded the International Longshoreand Warehouse Union (ILWU) and played a significant rolein improving working conditions for dockworkers.

Michael Quill (1905-1966):

Quill was an Irish-born labor leader who co-founded the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU). He played a vital rolein organizing public transportation workers and advocating for their rights.

GeorgeMeany (1894-1980) and Lane Kirkland (1922-1999):

Both Meany and Kirkland were of Irish descent Meany and Kirkland were influential leaders of the American labor movement who worked closet together for many years Meany was the first president of the AFL-CIO, while Kirkland succeeded him and continued their work to improve labor conditions.

On April 9t h, t he Sunday Business Post print ed a leak from t he board of our nat ional broadcast er, RTÉ, about a cont roversy over t he appoint m ent of t he next Direct or General t hat divided t he board of direct ors It w as far from t he first t im e t hat m em bers of t he board bet rayed t heir confident ialit y obligat ions But it w as dram at ic given t he collapse of aut horit y t hat charact erised RTÉ?s form er DG?s t enure and t he ongoing financial crises t hat dog t he broadcast er Chair of t he board, Siún Ní Raghallaigh, had t o appear before a governm ent al hearing t o answ er for t he w ay in w hich t he appoint m ent had been bot ched and leaked In response, she gat hered t he board and had a law yer lect ure t hem on t heir obligat ion not t o leak Yet she w oke up t o unfort unat e new s on Sunday, May 20t h, again in t he Sunday Business Post Her st iff w arning t o her colleagues not t o leak had been duly leaked

If t hat seem ed like a glim pse of how dysfunct ional t he nat ional broadcast er has becom e, it w as dw arfed by w hat follow ed in June An audit revealed t hat RTÉ had considerably under-declared it s paym ent s t o it s highest paid present er, t he out going present er of t he Lat e Lat e Show , Ryan Tubridy, paying him (but not declaring) ?345,000 ($375,000) over five consecut ive years, 2017-2022. These secret paym ent s and dishonest declarat ions occurred in t he backdrop of RTÉ im posing pay cut s on it s st aff. The st at ion lied about Tubridy?s salary and Tubridy said not hing in five years t o correct t he record. To cover t he ext ra and undeclared paym ent s t o Tubridy, RTÉ devised a ruse of funnelling advert isem ent revenue st raight t o Tubridy. When t he advert iser pulled out in 2021, t he Irish t axpayer w as unw it t ingly m ade t o pay t he bill. Ní Raghallaigh acknow ledged t hat ?RTÉ has fallen short of t he high st andards t hat it set s for it self ?? high st andards t hat are rat her invisible t o t he hum an eye.

The Tubridy scandal led t o furt her governm ent al hearings (held by Oireacht as com m it t ees) t hat int errogat ed t he RTÉ execut ive over t hree successive w eeks in June and July Not hing in RTÉ?s 97-year hist ory w as as dam aging as w hat em erged from t hose

hearings They unlocked a sea of corrupt ion in t he broadcast er Bungs, baubles and perks have been passed around bet w een t he execut ive and it s elit e present ers for decades; t he scale of t he disclosure and t he underhand m et hods (involving offshore ?bart er ?account s) has dest royed public t rust in RTÉ.

Chair of t he pow erful governm ent al Public Account s Com m it t ee, Brian St anley, responded: ?w ho set up t his dodgy account ancy pract ices? Who set it off? Who signed off on it ? And w ho knew about it and w hy??The chair of t he Media com m it t ee, Niam h Sm yt h TD, expressed anger at t he m em bers of her com m it t ee being ?conned and m isled? . To address t his geyser of scandals, seven invest igat ions have now been est ablished. The report s w ill t ake up t o eight m ont hs t o be com plet e and w ill ensure t hat a series of revelat ions about t he m ism anagem ent of RTÉ w ill cont inue t hroughout t he rest of t he year and int o 2024

The new Direct or General, Kevin Bakhurst , t ook over t he role on July 10t h Already Bakhurst w as facing a st orm of financial problem s and a governm ent t hat had run out of pat ience w it h RTÉ?s inabilit y t o run it self. Now he faces a cat ast rophe on every front . The m ost relent less opposit ion w ill com e from t he st aff w ho have been t arnished by t he hypocrisy, incom pet ence of t he m anagem ent and t he grot esque unfairness of RTÉ?s financial policies

One disast er has engendered anot her The bet rayal of public t rust has m ade it im possible for t he governm ent t o increase it s funding for RTÉ or t o reform t he ineffect ive w ay in w hich RTÉ collect s it s t elevision licence fees from t he public The public w ill vent it s rage t hrough non-paym ent of t he t elevision licence fees on a scale not seen since t he (successful) m ass prot est against w at er charges in 2014-2017. Com m ercial revenue w ill also drain aw ay from RTÉ due t o t he reput at ional dam age The resent m ent of t he RTÉ execut ive am ong it s st aff, w ho m ust face an unsym pat het ic public, w ill deepen, m aking t he organisat ion alm ost im possible t o run.

So, w hat can be done? The Irish public and governm ent do not need t o im agine a nat ional broadcast er dedicat ed t o public service program m ing: w e have one already in t he form of TG4, t he Irish language channel. Sim ilarly, w e need a public broadcast er in t he English language t hat asks searching quest ions of Irish societ y and serves t he public, not it self

So, here is a proposal for t he governm ent : dissolve t he t ravest y t hat is our nat ional broadcast er RTÉ?s grounds in Dublin 4 w ould sell for a fort une That m oney could be used t o est ablish a new cam pus, locat ed on t he out skirt s of Dublin. The new broadcast er w ould priorit ise t raining young people and provide t hem w it h affordable living accom m odat ion on cam pus w hile t hey t rain It w ould have a new m edia depart m ent t o int errogat e t he role of public service m edia in t he 21st cent ury and yet anot her depart m ent t o im agine and im plem ent an all-Ireland m edia service. It w ould curat e and digit ise t he archive t hat RTÉ neglect ed (or w orse) over t he past decades, w hich w ould be m ade available t o t he public for non-com m ercial use for free. Furt herm ore, t he governm ent w ould m andat e t he revenue com m ission t o collect t he licence fee t o ensure an approxim at e annual budget on t he condit ion t hat t he broadcast er w ould have t o run it self on t hat budget and w it hout recourse t o advert isem ent revenue. St aff, including senior m anagem ent , could apply for jobs at t he new nat ional broadcast er t o be rem unerat ed on a st rict civil service pay scale and pay cap Those unhappy w it h such t erm s need not apply Then w e m ight just have a nat ional broadcast er t hat is w ort hy of t he nam e. Her criticism of the abuses of theCatholic Church arewell known, but she was also a staunch anti-colonialist who challenged British rule in Ireland and partition In 1989 shesang Irish WaysandIrish Lawsat the march for British withdrawal in Dublin on the20th anniversary of the re-deployment of the British Army on thestreets of the Six Counties.

She wrote this brilliant letter to the Irish Timesexplaining the Irish Republican position, " speaking thetruest feelings of many Irish people "

She recorded traditional and rebel songs, including OróSéDoBheatha 'Bhaile, Paddy'sLament, and a moving rendition of FoggyDew withtheChieftains.

Sinead was annoyed that U2 would announce, " This is not a rebel song" before singing SundayBloody Sunday, so she wroteThisisa Rebel Song, whose stirring lyrics contain imagery of rage and rapeby an English lover as an allegory of the Anglo-Irish conflict

In her song Famine, she rejects the label faminesince there was plenty of food in Ireland at thetime, and equates thevictims of the starvation to a battered child of England and ends by saying:

The Good Friday Agreem ent does not m andat e any specific out com e but provides a peaceful and dem ocrat ic pat hw ay t ow ard unit y. Polls show an increasing am ount of people w ould vot e for a unit ed Ireland in a border poll. In t he 2021 Nort hern Ireland census of t he 1.9 m illion populat ion, Cat holics (Most ly Nat ionalist s) now out num ber Prot est ant s (m ost ly Unionist s): 45.7% versus 43.48%.

An inform ed and respect ful debat e bet w een nat ionalist s, unionist s, and non-aligned people of Ireland is essent ial, as w ell as a dialog bet w een t he Irish and Brit ish governm ent s. Since t he Tory part y cam e int o pow er in 2010 t hrough Brexit t o t oday, Brit ain's int erest in keeping t he six nort hern Irish count ies in t heir Kingdom has w aned; m any, if not m ost , w ould be happy t o see it go. Unfort unat ely, current Irish governm ent s claim t he call for a border poll is dest abilizing. Many suspect t heir real concern is losing pow er for t hem selves and t heir part ies. To reject direct discussion of a unit ed Ireland for fear of loyalist s' violence only encourages unionist s/ loyalist s t o t hreat en m ore inst abilit y. It is m orally and polit ically unaccept able t o allow t hreat s of violence t o alt er t he dem ocrat ic w ill of t he people. Sinn Fein is dest ined t o t ake pow er in t he Sout h, w hich w ill be a gam e-changer since Irish unit y is high on t heir plat form .

Ireland hosts many festivals throughout the year, beginning with Saint Patrick's Day Parades, Dublin's Writers Festival, Kilkenny Arts Festival, Electric Picnic for modern music lovers, and traditional music festivals galore. But the biggest, and our favorite, community festival in Ireland is the Peoples Festival, Feile an Phobail, which incorporates all the above activitiesin the first ten days of August in Belfast. Concerts, comedians, a carnival parade, art exhibitions, historical tours, and even boxing matches on Féile Fight Night.

Its literary happenings have attracted Seamus Heaney and Roddy Doyle, and there arewonderful theater productions by Tony Devlin and others, plus dozens of activities likeyoga, hill hikes, and children's activities.

Additionally, thereis something no other festival I am aware of has: a Discussions and Debates Program, which have included people like Robert Fisk, Jeremy Corbin, President Mary McAleese, and

Ian Paisley Jr These always free " Talks," over 75 this year, centered around St Mary's University, features a fascinating variety of topics from Brexit and Irish Unity to historical topics like the Irish Civil War.

Thebiggest draw is the concerts, primarily held in Falls Park, attracting as many as 10,000 festival goers every night

Variousgenres are offered, from Rap to Rebel music, Legends of Rock, Disco Night, The Wolfe Tones, Westlife, and Kneecap.

Past performers included The Pogues, UB40, and Christy Moore. Last year, we enjoyed Imelda May in Falls Park The year before, we loved Phil Coulter's concert in Clonard Monastery, and I recall seeing Black Uhuru back when the shows were held in Springhill over 30 years ago.
