I r ish people, be they natives of I reland or par t of the I r ish Diaspor a are prone to celebr ations and enj oying life to the fullest. We are even known for having great funer als. I think it is in not j ust our culture but in our DNA. Over the year s the adage. " The L ife of Riley" mor phed from meaning something akin to that lazy I r ish guy really takes the fun and easy way of life to almost an envious compliment. The phr ase was also tur ned into the title for sever al films and two hit TV comedies (one in Amer ica with William Bendix and one in the UK with Nile Dudgeon.) Point being, the next few months are going to be packed with I r ish & Celtic enter tainment, events and par ties and our dear reader s will be kept well infor med of all the oppor tunities to par ticipate! L et's face it, the cur rent events are gr im, so to keep a balance, we all need to for get our problems and devote some of our time to the finer and lighter side of our lives. The company features top-flight dancer s including River dance professionals, wor ld champions, regional and national champions, as well as musicians Anna Colliton (Cher ish the L adies, Eileen I ver s, Comas); percussion and Alasdair White, fiddle and the K er r y Voice Squad.An incredible team! The show, which has been broadcast on PBS, is a celebr ation of family and community that showcases some of I reland?s great tr aditions including blessing the butter chur n, chasing the wren, and dancing on the half-door. A segment of the show features sean-nós dancing, an old style of dance or iginating in Connemar a, that str ips down the conventions of I r ish dance with an improvisational approach that focuses on the r hythms and the j oy of dancing. Twenty-one-year-old Caleb Walton is an I r ishdancer from a small town in east Geor gia. He has been dancing with theK avanagh Por ter Academy for almost a decade and has had the pleasureof competing at the wor lds 2023 placing sixth. I reland was one of the 120 nations to vote for the resolution, which mar ks the fir st response from the United Nations in addressing the ongoing conflict. Among the 14 nations that opposed the resolution were I sr ael and the United States. Additionally, five Pacific I sland nations and four European Union member countr ies, namely Austr ia, Croatia, Czechia, and Hungar y, were par t of the dissenting group.

One of the most haunting, prophetic and power ful poems of the 20th centur y with the flour ish: ?And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, / Slouches towar ds Bethlehem to be bor n?? The title of M áir ía Cahill?s j ust published memoir,Rough Beast: My Story and the Reality of Sinn Féin, provides an intr iguing double entendre. I t is widely touted that Sinn Féin may lead the next I r ish gover nment, fulfilling its ambition to sit across a table from a Sinn Féin Fir st M inister of the Nor ther n I reland Assembly and deftly negotiate away the Nor ther n State. The epoch-shaping image in Yeats?poem suits the par ty?s sense of deliver ance. Yet Cahill?s har rowing book about the way in which she was br utalised by the I RA and demeaned by the par ty leader ship leaves the reader in no doubt about the bestial tactics deployed in the pur suit of power. Since 2010, M áir ía Cahill has publicly alleged that a member of the I RA, M ar tin M or r is, repeatedly r aped her over the cour se of a year, 1997; that she told Ger r y Adams about the abuse; that Adams met her and told her that ?sometimes abuser s are so manipulative that the abused actually enj oy it?(Adams denies both saying this and meeting her to discuss the allegation); that the I RA questioned her frequently, brought her before a kangaroo cour t, ultimately forced her, while she was still in her teens, into a confrontation with M or r is and did not find against him. I n the ear ly year s of the Troubles, I RA men were apt to dismiss the political par ty that acted as its apologist, Sinn Féin, par tly on gender grounds. Aoife M oore?s recently published book,The L ong Game: I nside Sinn Féin, recor ds that one for mer member of the I RA said: ?We used to say it [Sinn Féin] was made up of cowar ds and women?. As par t of Sinn Féin?s proj ect to reinvent itself and deemphasise or er ase repugnant aspects of its past, Sinn Féin has mounted a campaign to por tr ay itself as a par ty that respects women and puts them in leader ship positions. Hence when Ger r y Adams and M ar tin M cGuinness retired in recent year s they were replaced by M ar y L ou M cDonald and M ichelle O?Neill respectively. Sinn Féin needs to deflect from its complicity in the cr uel response to cases such as the r ape of M áir ía Cahill. But, as the publication of her memoir makes clear, M áir ía Cahill will not relent until Sinn Féin acknowledges that she has always been telling the tr uth, and that the suppor ter s of the I RA have been lying. A so-called ar my waging a so-called war to ?liber ate?a people does a lot to destroy its own myth when it per petuates sex cr imes
against the civilians it pretends to protect. A political par ty that attempts to give cover for such actions is equally damaged. So, it should alar m us all that sever al mainstream media outlets in I reland, including our national broadcaster, have lar gely ignored Cahill?s memoir. Too timorous to upset the par ty that they suspect will lead the next gover nment and which has a histor y of relentlessly bullying dissenter s? A compar ison is ir resistible between the way in which the par ty is haunted by the abuse of M áir ía Cahill and by the mur der of Jean M cConville. A widow and mother of 10 children, M cConville was mur dered and ?disappeared?by the I RA in 1972. That was the year in which the Br itish gover nment began to break the I RA through cover t methods. I ts secret intelligence or ganisations were in full oper ation in Nor ther n I reland. A senior member of the Br itish ar my (later a gener al) Fr ank K itson master minded the infiltr ation of the I RA. He had theor ised how best to penetr ate a ter ror ist or ganisation in his book,L ow I ntensity Oper ations, published in 1971, and he was assigned to Nor ther n I reland the following year to implement his techniques. K itson was adept at identifying defector s and talker s dur ing heavy inter rogation. He believed that almost anyone (except fanatics) could be ?tur ned?; j ust wait for, or indeed create, the r ight circumstances. Find the young per son who j oined for the adventure of becoming a member of a secret ar my, or the man who has lost his j ob and needs income to feed his family. I t responded to the Br itish secret intelligence oper ations by imposing an even str icter code of secrecy on its oper ator s, reducing infor mation to a need-to-know basis within the ter ror ist cell. Secondly, it leaped to conclusions about anyone whom it suspected of infor ming such as M cConville. The hor ror visited upon M cConville and Cahill symbolises all that is false about the par ty?s pose in the past (that the I RA was forced into violence to defend the nationalist community); and the fault-lines of its pose about its present incar nation (that it is a moder n, egalitar ian and democr atic par ty). Ger r y Adams has been accused by people who were
