Derek Warfield founded his band The Young W olfe Tones in 2005. He had previously been a founding member and leader of The W olfe Tones, which he co-founded in1963, and left in 2001.

Terry Casey and The Fenians are a beloved force in Irish M usic and Celt ic Rock in SoCal. They have also t oured around t he US. They have a very loyal fan base and have also garnered a reput at ion for organizing t ours t o Ireland. The t rip are called "Hooley Holidays" ? in

Ireland and t hey combine sight seeing wit h t heir musical performances and sessions.

It t akes dedicat ion t o t he cause of Irish Cult ure and M usic t o successfully pull off t hese endeavors.

The Fenians were founded around 1988 and are known for t heir "pot ent mix of t radit ional Irish folk and good old rock n roll."They combine original composit ions wit h cont emporary and t radit ional t unes, infusing t hem wit h influences from rock, folk, bluegrass, jazz, and world music. Their live shows are part icularly well-regarded. The View From Ireland

Scien t ist s Wan t ed: On ly Am er ican s Need Apply

By M au r ice Fit zpat r ick Higher Educat ion M inist er James Lawless has announced a ?Global Talent Init iat ive?which will allocat e millions (t he exact figure has not yet been disclosed) t o at t ract t alent t o Ireland.

Target ing expert s in t he fields of medicine, science and t echnology, t he government will underwrit e up t o half of t he salaries of researchers/ professors. Nearly all t hird level educat ion in Ireland is public, but t here is more happening here t han simply an expansion of government al support for t hird level research and educat ion. W hat t hey are not quit e saying is t hat t hey want t o poach America-based scient ist s who have suddenly found t heir jobs under t hreat or t heir research funding cut . You do not have t o be a scient ist t o work out t he laws of at t ract ion and repulsion at work: it is no accident t hat t he Irish government policy on science is exact ly t he opposit e of t he US government .

The circumst ances for scient ific researchers in t he US are dire. Federal funding for research and development and for academic work generally has been eviscerat ed since Trump ret urned t o t he W hit e House. W orse, academic leaders have encount ered an unprecedent ed host ilit y and const raint .

The Chronicle of Higher Educat ion in recent mont hs has been a lit any of t he cut s, censorship and inst abilit y t hat prevails in t he US academia.

There are several reasons behind t his war on science. In an illuminat ing art icle, ?M aking M icrobes Great Again?,Paul Krugman t raced t he growt h of host ilit y t o vaccinat ions against almost eliminat ed diseases such as measles t o hippy-ish resist ance t o vaccinat ion in t he 1960s t hrough t o now. As he argued, in t he US of t oday, where Robert F. Kennedy is Healt h Secret ary, t he ant i-vax movement became powerful and deadly when it t ook over much of t he polit ical right ?. It has moved from being a minorit y viewpoint t o becoming inst it ut ionalised at t he federal level.

The put at ive liberat ion conferred on parent s and schools t o spread killer diseases has no t olerance for science-based medical guidance.

Then t here is t he war against t he scient ific basis of t he effect s of fossil fuel emissions on our environment . The US, cont rary t o some percept ions of it , has a robust and growing renewable indust ry. Texas, for inst ance, long since synonymous wit h t he US oil indust ry, is now a leader in wind energy. Since renewable energy can and does save money,

t he fossil fuel lobby seeks elaborat e ways t o discredit it from ot her perspect ives. Their focus is t o dist ract vot ers by propounding t he message t hat climat e change is an assault on freedom. (Just feel t hat freedom next t ime you pay t he bill for t anking your car).

The t rump card, however, is t o port ray it all as a hoax. If you are reading t his from a place which has recent ly undergone, or is current ly experiencing, a heat wave, drought , cyclone, hurricane, flood or wildfire t he ?hoax?may sound a lit t le hard t o reconcile wit h realit y.

Science examines t he effect s of pumping carbon int o t he at mosphere and t hat mode of invest igat ion is sharply at odds wit h t he et hos in Washingt on t oday. Consider, for inst ance, a W hit e House Office of Informat ion and Regulat ory Affairs memo issued on M ay 5t h st at ing t hat ?it is no longer federal government policy t o maint ain a uniform est imat e of t he monet ized impact s of greenhouse gas emissions?.

There is a way t o ult imat ely win t his argument t hrough avoiding it . Reject framing t he debat e in t erms of belief and denial and forget about demonising fossil fuel. The cost of renewable energy is plummet ing, and consumers are embracing it accordingly. If t he public becomes more ?agnost ic?about t he ideological aspect of energy sources, polit icians will cot t on on t o t he prospect of gaining elect oral support t hrough delivering cheaper energy.

W ind and solar energy are already cheaper t han ext ract ing and drilling; t he gulf bet ween t he cost of renewables and fossil fuel will widen inexorably. M ake t hat t he argument .

Then t he glorificat ion of drilling will be exposed for what it is.

A furt her facet of t he assault on science is t hat in any aut horit arian syst em t here is a need t o silence dissent and enforce submission. In t he

first quart er of 2025, t hat was devast at ingly effect ive in t he US. Professor in American Hist ory at Trinit y College Dublin Daniel Geary recent ly not ed t hat ?The day aft er Donald Trump became president in 2017, millions of Americans t urned out in prot est in t he W omen?s M arch.

Nearly half a million marched in Washingt on, DC?.Resist ance t o his second presidency has been far slower t o awaken. In t he meant ime, scient ist s and academia generally have been hammered. The Irish government (and ot her European government s, part icularly France and t he UK) are about t o benefit from a cult ure of fear.

So, t here may be an influx of scient ist s and ot her scholars t o Europe. (It could be mega ? M ake Europe Great Again)?

But t his is no t ime for Europe t o be complacent about it s defence of academic right s and freedom of speech.

The academics who do relocat e should at a minimum be able t o expect government s dedicat ed t o an absolut e defence of academic freedom from government int erference. Let t hat be writ t en int o t he ?Global Talent Init iat ive?.

Professor Pat Cullen, t he youngest of seven children from Co Tyrone, has had a dist inguished career in nursing. She has held senior posit ions, including General Secret ary and Chief Execut ive of t he Royal College of Nursing, where she represent ed over 500,000 nurses across t he islands.

In 2024, she resigned from her role t o pursue a polit ical career, successfully winning t he parliament ary seat previously held by Bobby Sands during his 1981 hunger st rike. By Jim M cDon ou gh The Irish hip-hop group Kneecap has faced

significant difficult ies wit h Brit ish aut horit ies, including accusat ions of support ing proscribed organizat ions and incit ement t o violence.

Allegations and Charges: One member of t he band, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (who performs as M o Chara), was charged wit h a t error offense in M ay oft his yeaar. This charge st ems from an incident in November 2024 at a London gig, where he allegedly displayed a flag in support of Hezbollah. He is due t o appear in W est minst er M agist rat es' Court on June 18, 2025. The band denies t his offense and st at es t hey will "vehement ly defend" t hemselves. Kneecap has also been crit icized for foot age from a November 2023 concert where a band member appeared t o say, "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local M P."

Emphatic Denials: Kneecap has st at ed t hey have, "never support ed Hamas or Hezbollah" and t hat t he foot age circulat ing online has been "deliberat ely t aken out of all cont ext " as part of a "smear campaign" following t heir crit icismof Israel's act ions in Gaza.

On t he out -t ake from t he concert in November of 2023, t he band has issues an unequivicol apology and issued a personal apology t o Brit ish vict im's family members.

They t old t he families of murdered M Ps t hat t hey "never int ended t o cause hurt ."

Concert Cancellations: Due t o t hese concerns, Kneecap was "removed" from performing at t he TRNSM T music fest ival in Glasgow in July 2025, wit h organizers cit ing "safet y concerns" raised by t he police. W e searched but could find no det ails from t he police so t his seems odd at best . Kneecap has scheduled a replacement show at t he O2 Academy in Glasgow t o make up for t his. Several ot her gigs have been canceled as a result of t he cont roversy, including a planned show at t he Eden Project in Cornwall. Some Brit ish polit icians have called for t he group t o be dropped from t he Glast onbury Fest ival lineup, where t hey are st ill scheduled t o perform. The Irish Rappers also just announced t heir biggest UK headline show t o dat e.

They will perform at t he 12,500 capacit y OVO Arena W embley in London. The group shared t he news on social media wit h t he message: ?All London heads. Our biggest

headline show out side of Ireland will t ake place on Sept ember 18 at t he OVO W embley Arena.... The belly of t he beast ? let ?s go!?

The eagerly ant icipat ed "Peaky Blinders" film, which has been operat ing under t he working t it le, "The Immort al M an," is set t o bring t he iconic Shelby family saga t o t he big screen.

W hile an official, definit ive t it le has yet t o be publicly confirmed, "The Immort al M an" has been widely used in product ion report s and is st rongly rumored t o be t he final name.

Cillian M urphy will reprise his acclaimed role as Thomas Shelby .Joining him are several familiar faces from t he series, including Sophie Rundle as Ada Thorne (née Shelby), Ned Dennehy as Charlie St rong ,Packy Leeas, Johnny Dogs, St ephen Graham as Hayden St agg, and Ian Peck as Curly.

The film will also int roduce new t alent s t o t he "Peaky Blinders" universe, wit h confirmed addit ions such as Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Rot h, Jay Lycurgo, and Barry Keoghan in new roles.
