Higher Education Minister JamesLawlesshas announced a ?Global Talent Initiative?which will allocate millions(the exact figure hasnot yet been disclosed) to attract talent to Ireland.
Targeting expertsin the fieldsof medicine, science and technology, the government will underwrite up to half of the salariesof researchers/ professors. Nearly all third level education in Ireland ispublic, but there ismore happening here than simply an expansion of governmental support for third level research and education. What they are not quite saying is that they want to poach America-based scientists who have suddenly found their jobsunder threat or their research funding cut. You do not have to be a scientist to work out the lawsof attraction and repulsion at work: it is no accident that the Irish government policy on science isexactly the opposite of the USgovernment.
the fossil fuel lobby seekselaborate waysto discredit it from other perspectives. Their focus isto distract votersby propounding the message that climate change isan assault on freedom (Just feel that freedom next time you pay the bill for tanking your car).
The circumstancesfor scientific researchers in the USare dire Federal funding for research and development and for academic work generally hasbeen eviscerated since Trump returned to the White House Worse, academic leaders have encountered an unprecedented hostility and constraint The Chronicle of Higher Education in recent monthshasbeen a litany of the cuts, censorship and instability that prevails in the USacademia
There are several reasons behind this war on science. In an illuminating article, ?Making Microbes Great Again? , Paul Krugman traced the growth of hostility to vaccinations against almost eliminated diseasessuch asmeasles to hippy-ish resistance to vaccination in the 1960s through to now Ashe argued, in the USof today, where Robert F Kennedy is Health Secretary, the anti-vax movement became powerful and deadly when it took over much of the political right? It hasmoved from being a minority viewpoint to becoming institutionalised at the federal level. The putative liberation conferred on parents and schoolsto spread killer diseaseshas no tolerance for science-based medical guidance.
Then there isthe war against the scientific basisof the effectsof fossil fuel emissions on our environment The US, contrary to some perceptions of it, has a robust and growing renewable industry Texas, for instance, long since synonymouswith the USoil industry, isnow a leader in wind energy. Since renewable energy can and doessave money,
The trump card, however, isto portray it all asa hoax If you are reading this from a place which hasrecently undergone, or iscurrently experiencing, a heatwave, drought, cyclone, hurricane, flood or wildfire the ?hoax?may sound a little hard to reconcile with reality.
Science examinesthe effects of pumping carbon into the atmosphere and that mode of investigation is sharply at odds with the ethos in Washington today. Consider, for instance, a White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs memo issued on May 5th stating that ?it isno longer federal government policy to maintain a uniform estimate of the monetized impacts of greenhouse gas emissions?
President Trump has signed an executive order to lift regulations on coal development The ?drill, baby, drill? dogma? devaluing facts and evidence? iswholly compatible with defunding science
There isa way to ultimately win this argument through avoiding it Reject framing the debate in termsof belief and denial and forget about demonising fossil fuel. The cost of renewable energy is plummeting, and consumers are embracing it accordingly. If the public becomesmore ?agnostic?about the ideological aspect of energy sources, politicianswill cotton on to the prospect of gaining electoral support through delivering cheaper energy.
Wind and solar energy are already cheaper than extracting and drilling; the gulf between the cost of renewablesand fossil fuel will widen inexorably Make that the argument Then the glorification of drilling will be exposed for what it is.
A further facet of the assault on science isthat in any authoritarian system there isa need to silence dissent and enforce submission In the

first quarter of 2025, that was devastatingly effective in the US Professor in American History at Trinity College Dublin Daniel Geary recently noted that ?The day after Donald Trump became president in 2017, millions of Americansturned out in protest in the Women?s March Nearly half a million marched in Washington, DC? . Resistance to his second presidency has been far slower to awaken In the meantime, scientists and academia generally have been hammered The Irish government (and other European governments, particularly France and the UK) are about to benefit from a culture of fear
So, there may be an influx of scientists and other scholars to Europe. (It could be mega ? Make Europe Great Again)?
But this isno time for Europe to be complacent about itsdefence of academic rightsand freedom of speech The academicswho do relocate should at a minimum be able to expect governmentsdedicated to an absolute defence of academic freedom from government interference. Let that be written into the ?Global Talent Initiative?

The Irish hip-hop group Kneecap has faced significant difficultieswith British authorities, including accusationsof supporting proscribed organizationsand incitement to violence.
One member of the band, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (who performsas Mo Chara), was charged with a terror offense in May ofthis yeaar This charge stemsfrom an incident in November 2024 at a London gig, where he allegedly displayed a flag in support of Hezbollah He is due to appear in Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 18, 2025. The band deniesthis offense and states they will "vehemently defend" themselves. Kneecap has also been criticized for footage from a November 2023 concert where a band member appeared to say, "The only good Tory isa dead Tory. Kill your local MP."
EmphaticDenials:
Kneecap has stated they have, "never supported Hamas or Hezbollah" and that the footage circulating online has been "deliberately taken out of all context" as part of a "smear campaign" following their criticismof Israel's actionsin Gaza.
On the out-take from the concert in November of 2023, the band hasissuesan unequivicol apology and issued a personal apology to British victim'sfamily members. They told the familiesof murdered MPsthat they "never intended to cause hurt "
Concert Cancellations:
Due to these concerns, Kneecap was"removed" from performing at the TRNSMT music festival in Glasgow in July 2025, with organizersciting "safety concerns" raised by the police. We searched but could find no details from the police so thisseems odd at best Kneecap hasscheduled a replacement show at the O2 Academy in Glasgow to make up for this. Several other gigs have been canceled asa result of the controversy, including a planned show at the Eden Project in Cornwall Some British politicianshave called for the group to be dropped from the Glastonbury Festival lineup, where they are still scheduled to perform The Irish Rappers also just announced their biggest UK headline show to date They will perform at the 12,500 capacity OVO Arena Wembley in London The group shared the newson social media with the message: ?All London heads Our biggest headline show outside of Ireland will take place on September 18 at the OVO Wembley Arena The belly of the beast ? let?sgo!?
Kneecap consist s of t hree m em bers: Mo Chara (Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh), Móglaí Bap (Naoise Ó Cairealláin) and DJPróvaí (J. J. Ó Dochart aigh) w ho oft en w ears t he Tri-Colour balaclava He init ially w ore it t o disguise him self from his st udent s w hen t he band st art ed out , as he w as a t eacher.
Kneecap hasperformed in the USmany times In SoCal, we were introduced to them when they were one of the acts for Ireland Week in 2021
They also played Coachella this year where they displayed anti-Israel messages and led chants of "Free Palestine." You may well disagree with this but this isan America tradition to criticize War and mayhem
However, following Coachella, Sharon Osbourne a born Brit, who hasno affinity for Free Speech, called for the band'sUSwork visas to be revoked The irony and pettinessinvolved in her actions is first rate A couple generationsback, her husband's band washeld to be despicable by many but the answer wasdon't go to the concertsor buy the LPs! Times have changed It istruly amazing that the insanity of censorship and McCarthyism isstill an issue in the US Worse than Osbourne's blathering, the American Jewish Committee hasalso cited the terror charge against Mo Chara as further evidence that Kneecap's tour should not proceed
Looking ahead, as of press time: there are listingsfor Kneecap concertsin the US starting in October including Washington, D C While some sourcesrefer to an "upcoming" UStour, these particular datesseem to be in the past or are placeholdersfor future events The specific statusof any current upcoming UStour datesisnot definitively clear from what we could find. However, it isa few months out and Kneecap sell out their shows

The or igins of Father ' s Day in the United States ar e pr im ar ily attr ibuted to Sonor a Sm ar t Dodd of Spokane, Washington. In 1909, inspir ed by M other ' s Day, she wanted to cr eate a special day to honor her father , William Sm ar t, a Civil War veter an who had r aised his six childr en as a single par ent after his wife' s death
Dodd pr oposed her idea to local r eligious leader s, and with their suppor t, the fir st Father ' s Day celebr ation in Spokane took place on June 19, 1910.
Ther e had actually been an ear lier " Father ' s Day" ser vice held in Fair m ont, West Vir ginia in 1908 to com m em or ate m en who died in a m ining disaster . However , it was Dodd' s per sistent effor ts that tr uly began the m ovem ent for a widespr ead, annual obser vance.
Despite gaining popular ity in var ious cities, the idea of a national Father ' s Day faced som e r esistance and was seen by m any as sim ply an attem pt to com m er cialize another holiday. Finally in 1924, Pr esident Calvin Coolidge also r ecom m ended that the nation obser ve the day but he did not issue a national pr oclam ation.
It was not until 1966 when Pr esident Lyndon B Johnson issued the fir st pr esidential pr oclam ation, designating the thir d Sunday in June as Father ' s Day After a pr otr acted str uggle, Pr esident Richar d Nixon signed it into law, m aking Father ' s Day a per m anent US National Holiday to be celebr ated on the thir d Sunday of June.
Father ' s Day is now widely celebr ated in m any countr ies including Ir eland, the UK, and Canada; hey all obser ve it on the thir d Sunday of June, aligning with the date in the United States.
While the adoption of Father ' s Day in these countr ies was lar gely influenced by the Am er ican tr adition, it has becom e a cher ished occasion for fam ilies to honor father s, gr andfather s, stepfather s, and other im por tant father figur es Celebr ations typically involve giving car ds and gifts, special m eals, and spending quality tim e together
Good thingstake time; that has certainy been the theme of the upcoming Peaky Blinders film . The film hasbeen delayed a few timesfrom the original speculation of release for Christmasof 2024.
The eagerly anticipated "Peaky Blinders" film, which has been operating under the working title, "The Immortal Man," is set to bring the iconic Shelby family saga to the big screen While an official, definitive title has yet to be publicly confirmed, "The Immortal Man" hasbeen widely used in production reportsand is strongly rumored to be the final name
Cillian Murphy will reprise his acclaimed role asThomasShelby .Joining him are several familiar faces from the series, including Sophie Rundle asAda Thorne (née Shelby), Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong ,Packy Leeas, Johnny Dogs, Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg, and Ian Peck as Curly.
The film will also introduce new talents to the "Peaky Blinders" universe, with confirmed additions such as Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Jay Lycurgo, and Barry Keoghan in new roles
Asof early June 2025, there isno official theatrical or Netflix streaming release date for the "Peaky Blinders" movie. However, speculation points to a potential late 2025 release on Netflix.
Filming for the movie began in July of 2024 and wrapped up in December 2024,, All of these clues align with a 2025 release window.
While Netflix isdistributing the film, it'salso being made in association with BBCFilm, suggesting a potential initial theatrical run before its streaming debut.
The basic plot of "The Immortal Man" isconfirmed to be set during World War II, which makes for an explosive new chapter for the Shelby family. Creator Steven Knight has stated that the film will be a "full-on Peaky Blindersat war," with both the country and the family facing immense conflict It'sexpected to delve into the effectsof the global war on the underground crime scene and explore the end of the British Empire, a significant historical context that will undoubtedly impact Tommy Shelby'sjourney Knight has also teased that the film aimsto "shock, delight, and horrify" audiences, and that it "won't be the end" of the Peaky Blindersstory.
Filming for "The Immortal Man" primarily took place in the West Midlands of the UK, including Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham and locations aroundSt Helens, Merseyside. The original series also extensively filmed in Leeds and Liverpool, so it'slikely the film continued to utilize the gritty, period-appropriate backdropsof these industrial cities
The film waswritten by the creator of the original series, Steven Knight. Knight isalso a producer on the film, alongside Cillian Murphy, Patrick Holland, and Guy Heeley Other executive producersinclude Tom Harper (who also directsthe film), David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Caryn Mandabach, and Andrew Warren.
