Barley Bears An environmentally conscious beer brand

Illustrator InDesign Illustration Branding Brand Standards Advertisement Layout

Barely Bears was a beer brand I created in my Advanced Publication 2 class. I was assigned to create an original brand and create an advertising campaign around it. My campaign was based around replacing the word bears in the phrase “save the BEARS” to beers. The brand would also donate a portion of its profits to a charity that helps conserve bear habitats. The packaging for each can had a different species of bear for each kind of bear. The advertising campaign consists of various print and digital ads.

MATUHTUGH POINT JUDITH, RI

The MATUHTUGH Sweatshirt design for a lobster boat

Illustrator InDesign Branding

The Matuhtugh is a lobster boat, owned by Rob Stewart, that fishes out of Point Judith, Rhode Island. I’ve worked in Point Judith since I was in my teens so naturally, I offered to make Rob a logo for a sweatshirt when he asked me. I had him send me some pictures of his boat so that I could replicate the hull. To normal people there isn’t a difference between lobster boats but to a fisherman it’s important because it tells them who the boat maker was. In this case the boat is a 34ft Duffy and I did my best to make it look like one.

Nutty Peanuts Creating branding for a peanut company minimalist

Nutty Peanuts was a project were I created different styles of logos for the same brand. This project was a milestone for me because it helped me gain an ability to create different styles of logos. Before this project I struggled when making my logos sometimes, I was lost and didn’t have any direction. However through the process of creating the Nutty logos I learned how to create different kinds of logos including ones I’d never made before like badge logos, responsive logos, and adaptive logos.

Brown Acceptance Box Using brand standards for Brown University

Illustrator InDesign Branding Brand Standards Print Production

The goal of this project wasn’t just to have us improve on printing but also to teach us how to follow brand standards. I decided to use the Brown front gates as inspiration for the pattern I illustrated. Throughout all the parts of the acceptance package the pattern element is used. The Brown front gate separate the school from the rest of city and suround the university’s quad. This makes it a good representation of the sancutary that Brown provides from its students. Inside my acceptance package, potential Brown students would receive a calendar, a Brown t-shirt, and a folder with their acceptance letter.

Holiday Cards Two holiday cards with a satirical twist

Illustrator InDesign Illustration Print Production Color Theory

My only goal for this project was to have fun. I decided to revise a project I did when I was a freshman in college. When I initally did this project I didn’t understand how to digitize my artwork correctly. Because of this I had done my artwork in Adobe Illustrator which took away the hand drawn aesthetic I was going for. When I revised the project, I redrew the illustrations for the Thanksgiving card and added an additional Easter card which needed its own original illustrations as well.

Sandy Beach Staff

Sandy Beach A hat design for Camp Sandy Beach

Illustrator Color Theory

Camp Sandy Beach is a summer camp in Rockville, Rhode Island. One of my friends was tasked with getting hats for the camp counselors so he commissioned me to make a design to be embroidered. When he initially contacted me he gave me a rough sketch of what he was thinking for the design. He wanted the initials of the camp (SB) and his vision was for the “S“ to be a wave and for the “B” to be a palm tree with bananas as the bowls of the “B.” I gave him two versions one that was what he asked for and one that had waves as both of the letters.

Misleading Magazine One of my first editorial design projects

Illustrator InDesign Illustration Branding Editorial Print Production

I was assigned to create an 8-page magazine with an original developed brand and creative original content. I conducted research to find inspiration and then proceeded to sketch and draft multiple versions of a masthead and overall cover design. Creating original artwork as well as creating a consistent layout was difficult. All the illustrations in the magazine are my own original work. I was recognized for the best cover design and best illustrations by my class.

Digita Printin save file in CMYK at 300dpi

Digita Printin printer is prepped, paper is loaded

Digital printing is a relatively new technology. Printing has been around since 1439 but digital printing presses have only been on the market since the early 1990s. A digital printer assembles images from complex sets of numbers and mathematical formulas. The images are captured from a matrix of dots, which are called pixels, in a process called digitizing. These digitized images are used in the printing process to control the deposition of the ink or toner. Digital printing also utilizes a color management system, which keeps the images looking the same when and wherever they are printed.

In 1993, the first digital color printing press, called Indigo, was launched. It was an instant hit and triggered an overnight transformation of the printing world. Now, customers could have short-run, high-quality, prints done right from a desktop computer. In 2000 the Hewlett Packard Company invested $100m into Indigo. On September 6, 2001, HP announced it would be acquiring the remaining shares in Indigo for $629m. Digital printing, especially inkjet, is becoming an increasingly more important and valuable part of printing as a whole. In 2014, it accounted for 13.5% of the total printing market output and in 2019 had risen to 17.4% of the total market output.

The goal of this project was to help us learn the process of whatever type of printing we wanted, I chose digital printing. After we had done our research on the type of printing we wanted to highlight, we then had to make infographics to show the printing process. This project was the first time I’d ever created vector artwork that wasn’t just for a logo. All the artwork was created originally for the purpose of the project. The Infographics poster serves as a milestone, marking the point where I became confident in my ability to creating vectored artwork.

Beaver Tail A catalog and brand for an outdoor clothing company

Illustrator InDesign Branding Editorial Print Production

I was assigned to create a catalog and trade show for a brand of our choice. Inspired by the L.L. Bean catalogues that I recently had received, I decided to do an outdoor apparel brand. The style of my editorial in my catalogue was heavily inspired by the L.L. Bean catalogue. I took ideas like the green banners I use for my subheadings and the type of hierarchy I use in my body copy. On the apparel side of things, I wanted to pull from brands like Patagonia and use bright colors while still trying to use a monochromatic palette for each item.

Did the food exceed your expectations? What was your favorite dish on the menu and why? Would you pay money to dine at Coastal Bites?

Coastal Bites A collaboration with Johnson and Wales Culinary students

Illustrator InDesign Branding Brand Standards Print Production

Coastal Bites was a restaurant that was done in collaboration with Johnson & Wales Culinary students. I was tasked with making a large display menu, a handheld menu, business cards, comment cards, and stickers. Our restaurants cuisine was Jamaican Barbecue. The chefs decided they wanted a beach theme and called the restaurant Coastal Bites. I came up with the idea of making the A’s in Coastal shark fins which lead to them becoming a sharks head; the shark is meant to reinforce the word bite.

The Porch was a project that was done in collaboration with JWU Culinary students from the Fine Dining class. I was assigned to make a menu, table tents, and a timeline. Our restaurants cuisine was inspired by comfort foods and home cooked meals. The chefs decided they wanted a log cabin theme and called the restaurant The Porch since the concept was based on feeling at home. I designed the timeline to be viewed digitally, via QR code, since the chefs needed it to be easily shown to potential employers.

Serenity Hospital A collaboration with Johnson and Wales Culinary students

Serenity Hospital was a project that was done in collaboration with JWU Culinary students from the Therapeutic Cuisine class. I was assigned to make a placemat and brochure that would inform the patient of the diet restrictions. Our hospitals specific diet was low fiber and low residue. The chefs decided they wanted a poppy flower as their icon as a symbol of tranquility. I designed the placemat to be interactive so that the patient can either do a crossword or just read what foods they shouldn’t be eating, I thought this would make it more practical for them.

This project was for Generals Crossing, a microbrewery located in Jamestown, RI. My team and I were tasked with creating a logo, codebook, t-shirt, coin, and print advertisement for the introduction of a mug club called the Culper Ring. The brewery and the club are both based on the American Revolution, so we took inspiration from the period. The Culper Ring was a spy organization that operated during the revolution which inspired me to use a foldout to hide the code in the codebook.
