Kirkby Design April Launch by James Dunlop Textiles

Page 1

LAUNCH OVERVIEW 2024

Four collections with a focus on sustainability and the environment, that experiment with new, responsibly sourced fibres and draw inspiration from nature. Natural yarns such as Aloe vera, hemp and bamboo are translated into relaxed sheers and textured weaves that have a reduced impact on the planet, without compromising on style or quality.

Each fabric within the four collections contains sustainable yarns, woven using natural fibres and or recycled materials.

“This launch required a lot of experimentation with natural fibres that we haven’t used before, but we wanted to test the boundaries to see what sustainable fabrics we could create. We will continue our research and keep developing exciting fabrics that are both aesthetically appealing and have been created consciously.”

Jordan Mould, Group Director of Sales and Innovation, and Brand Director of Kirkby Design.

The distinctive Kirkby aesthetic is ever present, with bold geometrics and contemporary graphics leading the way in the hero collection GRAPHIC NATURE. Ultra-modern and technically innovative, nature inspired designs are woven from natural or recycled yarns. ALOE, as the name suggests, is a fluid, sustainable sheer created from Aloe vera fibre. The ever-popular LASER has been redeveloped and improved, now named LASER ECO which has been produced using a more environmentally friendly process and has Vegan certification. Finally, a Kirkby staple, CHELSEA, now CHELSEA II has OekoTex certification and has been re-coloured in a refreshed palette.

The trend-setting palette continues to evolve with new shades of Yuzu, Nightscape and Toffee, as well as key shades of Apricot and Evergreen, and an abundance of neutrals. As ever, the Kirkby studio are informed by their extensive colour research, finding inspiration in fashion, nature, travel and culture as they lead the way in contemporary colour.

GRAPHIC NATURE

Sustainable Decorative Weaves

Progression through experimentation; this collection of decorative weaves uses sustainable and recycled materials creating yarns that are better for the environment such as hemp, bamboo and Ahimsa silk. Inspired by natural phenomena and given a graphic edge, vistas of marble, basalt columns and rock faces are translated into geometrics and contemporary visuals. Unmistakably Kirkby, the collection comprises an innovative mix of materials and styles, including cut and uncut velvets, a super-soft chenille and a warming wool.

FEATURES:

•Eight designs

•Mix of upholstery and dual-purpose qualities

•Coordinating cushions are also available

Decorated with a playful, irregular woven stripe, this upholstery fabric has the calming effect of flowing VINE leaves. The addition of NATURAL HEMP to this cotton weave creates a textured, two-tone cloth with a seersucker effect. HEMP is considered a SUSTAINABLE FIBRE as it is grown without the use of pesticides or fertilisers. Also, unlike the production of other crops used in textile manufacturing, growing HEMP ENRICHES THE SOIL WITH NUTRIENTS and requires very little water. Hemp plants are cultivated at close proximity, producing a high yield and storing large quantities of CO 2 each year. LASER ECO & LASER METALLIC ECO

Vegan Faux Leather

LASER ECO uses BIOVYN™, a bio-attributed PVC which uses 100% renewable carbon feedstock, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to the production of fossil fuel-based PVC. Instead of traditional ethylene from fossil fuels, it utilises bioattributed ethylene, sourced from CTO (Crude Tall Oil), a second-generation feedstock found in the forestry industry. The bio-attributed PVC is certified based on the quantity of renewable feedstock used alongside fossil feedstock.

LASER ECO is vegan certified, meaning it is made without the use of any animal products and is Oeko-tex certified, meaning the fabric is free from harmful chemicals.

*BIOVYN™ is a trademark, the property of INOVYN ChlorVinyls Limited.

FEATURES:

• 82 colours

• 61 matte

• 21 metallic

• Suitable for upholstery and accessories on B versions

• Suitable for upholstery and accessories where legislation allows on K5332 and K5333*

• 80% Biovyn PVC, 9% PL, 9%VI, 2% PU

• BIOVYNtm - the main building block of PVC is ethylene, which is traditionally produced from fossil fuels, in this instance bio-attributed ethylene is used instead. The raw material used to create bio-attributed ethylene is CTO (Crude Tall Oil), which is 2nd generation feedstock and not in competition with the food supply. CTO can be found in the forestry industry as a residual stream of the pulp making process. Bioattribution in the chemical industry is a popular process in producing sustainable products and is used in BIOVYN too. During the production process the renewable feedstock is mixed with the fossil feedstock and via stringent certification, the biosourced PVC is attributed on the basis of the quantity of renewable feedstock used in the process. ALOE

Wide-Width Sustainable Sheer

ALOE is a ground-breaking, washable, wide-width drapery textile, 60% of which is Aloe vera and 40% organic cotton. Aloe vera is more sustainable than conventional materials as the plant grows with no chemicals or fertilisers and does not require any watering.

To create the Aloe vera yarn, the gel from the plants is extracted, then pulled, heated and pressed. This creates a substance which is then shredded to produce a fleece-like material that is spun.

Organic cotton is then combined with the Aloe vera to create an ultra-smooth, contemporary drape with an elegant character. Organic cotton is more sustainable than regular cotton as it uses no pesticides or fertilisers, which is better for the local environment and farmers. Compared to regular cotton, the production process is more energy efficient, therefore releasing fewer greenhouse gases and because of the improved soil quality, uses significantly less water. This product is Oeko-Tex certified, which means the fabric is free of harmful chemicals.

The transparency of the ALOE sheer allows light to filter through, creating minimal blocks of colour. A calming neutral palette is punctuated with on-trend shades such as Acid Yellow, Cobalt Blue and Clove. ALOE can also be hung vertically or horizontally.

FEATURES:

• 28 colours

• 60% AV, 40% Organic CO

• Drapes only

CHELSEA II

100% Linen

A Kirkby staple, CHELSEA II is a relaxed, Oeko-Tex certified, washable 100% linen, meaning the fabric is free from harmful chemicals. CHELSEA II has a beautiful stonewashed finish, which gives a relaxed feel and makes it the perfect weight for drapery and upholstery.

Linen is considered to be a sustainable fibre as it is a natural product and the entire flax plant can be used when harvested, meaning there is almost no waste created during the spinning and weaving processes.

Flax plants are cultivated at close proximity, producing a high yield and storing large quantities of CO2 each year. Flax plants help improve soil quality which encourages biodiversity in the local ecosystem.

CHELSEA II has been re-coloured to include a mix of warm neutrals, rich browns and fresh greens that add yet more versatility to the existing palette of contemporary shades.

FEATURES:

• Same quality as CHELSEA, now Oeko-Tex certified
