Surface Outdoor

The Surface Outdoor collection pushes beyond frame into the exterior, creating luxury textiles which meet the visual, tactile and performance rigors required for outdoor applications.

Our artistic Abstraction print from the Surface collection has been reworked and recoloured for outdoor upholstery and accompanies two new luxury outdoor plain weaves. Elba and Sole Boucle utilise solution dyed boucle yarns, to create two boucle upholsteries plain weaves, which deliver the

aesthetics of the indoor boucle design movement, in yarns appropriate for the exterior space.

The palette expresses external references, foliagebased greens, ocean blues, baked earth terracotta’s and earthy neutrals, spanning sea salt whites to deep basalt blacks.

The Surface collection is woven in Italy and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.

THE HARSH LIGHT IN NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA MEANS WE OFTEN HAVE TO DESATURATE OR MAKE COLOURS MORE COMPLEX TO SUIT OUR CONDITIONS

Stephanie Moffit, Mokum Design Director, shares an insight into the technical requirements of outdoor fabrics.

At Mokum we predominately develop fabrics with European mills who are used to producing fabrics for less intense sunlight. Because of the harsh light in New Zealand and Australia we have to desaturate or create colours which are more complex to suit our conditions.

Consumers expect more from their textiles in this part of the market, where homes are open and we favour transitional spaces. Therefore it is a priority that our mills offer sophisticated colour lines in robust constructions that allow us to combat these harsh environmental conditions.

To cater to these needs, we work with either solution dyed (SD) polyolefin or acrylic yarns. SD means the solution is dyed before the yarn is extracted from the dye, so there is colour all the way through which produces and incredibly UV resistant yarn.

Living beyond the frame

PUSHING BEYOND THE FRAME AND INTO THE EXTERIOR WORLD

The textiles from Mokum’s Surface Outdoor collection meet the visual, tactile, and performance requirements for outdoor applications in a palette of foliage-based greens, ocean blues, baked terracotta, and earthy neutrals spanning sea salt whites to deep basalt blacks.

Lifted from the Surface collection, our artistic Abstraction print has been reworked and recoloured for outdoor upholstery and accompanies two

luxurious new outdoor plains, Elba and Sole Bouclé. Composed of Solution Dyed yarns these plain weave bouclé upholsteries deliver the aesthetic of the indoor boucle design movement, in constructions appropriate for the exterior space.

Bismarck House, Bondi

A COLLABORATIVE PHOTOSHOOT IN A PICTURESQUE SETTING

Situated at the top of the hill between Bondi and Tamarama along Sydney’s iconic seaside is Bismarck House. An urban oasis designed by Andrew Burges Architects for Julia and William Dangar, and the location of Mokum’s Surface and Surface Outdoor collection photoshoots.

Architecturally, the design reimagines what a 20th century semi-detached villa can be and was deeply influenced by the surrounding environment. Prioritizing ventilation and capturing the north-easterly breezes during Australia’s hot summer months.

Unlike many projects, this house was built to complement the garden, not the other way around. Designed by homeowner and landscape architect William Dangar of Dangar Barin Smith, “the garden is an abstract arrangement of hardy, interesting

plants which complement the quirky architectural details. For example, the scoops in the architecture allow for windows of light and hidden courtyards,” says Julia.

The garden forms a continuous boundary along the laneway, creating a fluid relationship between the interior and exterior spaces and framing a central Bismarck Palm within the cactus garden, which also gives the property its name. The garden’s palette and materials are intentionally “industrial and raw, there’s lots of texture with a robust nature; we always designed this house as a space to share with like-minded guests.” FULL ARTICLE

Bring on the bouclé

BOUCLÉ – PRONOUNCED ‘BOO-CLAY’ COMES FROM THE FRENCH WORD BOUCLER, MEANING ‘TO CURL’

If you are into interiors, you have no doubt noticed the growing number of cushions, bedding, and furniture pieces upholstered in this wondrously tactile fabric.

If you are seeking dimension and texture, then bouclé is the fabric for you. With its extremely nubby, looped yarn, bouclé can be used in many applications and although traditionally woven from wool or mohair, it is now produced in cotton, linen, and even silk yarns.

Bouclé refers to both the yarn and the fabric made from the yarn. Known for its interesting visual texture and super-soft touch, there is no doubt that this interior textile is in high demand for residential and commercial schemes.

This hardy fabric is most often seen in white or cream and provides a modernity to any space. The soft handle makes it ideal for curved furniture and it is loved by mid-century enthusiasts, while it’s plushness is equally relished by cushion addicts. The current resurgence of bouclé proves the market just loves a super tactical fabric.

Bouclé also speaks to our current megatrends of nostalgia and escapsim which are a natural evolution of the earlier trends of calm sanctuary and maximalism.

Voom by Adam Goodrum

MODERN AUTRALIAN DESIGN REFLECTS A LAID-BACK, EASY GOING, AND INVENTIVE CULTURE

We spoke to leading Australian industrial designer Adam Goodrum about the simple yet robust combination of Mokum’s outdoor bouclé upholsteries with the clean, sheet metal construction of his Voom collection for Made by Tait.

WHAT LED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN?

I grew up in a beachside suburb of Perth in the 80s where there was a strong backyard making culture which sparked my interest in creating things with my friends like cubby houses, billy carts, and surfboard trolleys. I also loved playing with Lego

which fostered an early appreciation of form, colour, and simple mechanics. In high school, my love for art and mathematics led me to pursue a career in fine arts, however, I soon discovered industrial design which seemed to unite my passions for art, math, and making. I studied industrial design at the University of Technology, Sydney, and have been working in product design ever since. FULL ARTICLE
