“James Dunlop’s Homestead collection draws inspiration from the magic of New Zealand’s landscape and its influence on our architecture and interior design”
Annie Moir, James Dunlop Design Director
New Zealand boasts an abundance of breathtaking coastal vistas and rugged alpine topography. Nestled within reach of these revered settings, are remarkable homes whose interiors connect to the land.
The fabrics within James Dunlop’s Homestead collection are inspired by this deep connection to the environment, pulling reference from the outdoors in via texture and colour. Our transitional textiles focus on tactility and dimension to complement the view, in a sophisticated yet casual reflection of how we live in this part of the world.
Developed in the James Dunlop studio, custom colour palettes offer both neutral and richly decorative hues borrowed from Mother Nature herself. Experience the colours of New Zealand’s lush fiords, snow-capped mountains, and rolling hillsides through our latest Homestead collection.
Expertly engineered to offer luxury textiles without compromising on practicality, the Homestead collection captures the look and feel of natural fibres in predominantly synthetic or blended compositions.
Three plain wide width draperies are woven to elegantly frame the view. Texture and nuanced colour create a subtle sense of movement and comfort at the window whilst lay the canvas on which the view can be appreciated as artwork within a space.
The Homestead collection by James Dunlop is an expression of the world around us. From expansive coastlines to snow-capped mountains Homestead captures the colours of New Zealand and transfers them into your living spaces. Replicating the luxurious look and feel of natural fibres in durable, largely synthetic constructions to be lived on with confidence for years to come.
Over 100 years ago in the South Island of New Zealand, James Dunlop entered the world of interior furnishings. The Southern Alps dominate the Island, a line of snow-capped peaks and rugged hillsides separating the vast eastern plains from the lush western bush. Along the Alps are ice-blue lakes and grey moraines. Wiry brown tussocks flourish amongst the red rosehips and pink and purple lupins dotted throughout the landscape, accented now and again by the iridescent red, green, and orange feathers of the Kea, our alpine parrot.
These shades colour our vision, forming the foundation of James Dunlop and in turn inspiring our Homestead collection. Nodding to the historic homesteads of high-country stations whilst looking towards the architectural homes which are now nestled into the topography. Tactile textiles have been custom coloured in mineral tones, earthen hues, and shades of green, capturing the colours of Mother Nature and allowing you to share in the essence of New Zealand.
It was essential that the story behind Homestead, James Dunlop’s latest collection release, be expressed visually from an architectural home set into a panoramic landscape. The multiaward winning Arrowtown House by RTA Studio Architects fit the brief, offering captivating views of Queenstown’s mountain ranges.
The home is as assemblage of five pavilions looking outwards from a central courtyard, inspired by the remnants of the goldmining structures scattered across the Wakatipu Basin. The pavilions are arranged to follow the contours of the land and described by the architects as being ‘of’ the Earth, rather than ‘on’ it.
Each section is orientated towards at least one of Queenstown’s iconic peaks – Cardrona, Mount Soho, Coronet Peak, Ben Lomond, and Double Cone – and constructed in materials which reference those traditionally used in the area.
Partially built in local Glenorchy schist and partially in weathering steel, the building evokes images of riverbeds and rusted tools, long abandoned by the region’s hopeful goldminers. At home within the courtyard stands a large sculpture crafted by the artist-homeowner in Corten steel – a god-like being appearing to blow in the wind – while a grand bronze door beckons visitors, conjuring a golden nugget – the treasure of Central Otago.
The central living space feels as expansive as the Remarkables beyond, with a four-metre-high stud, schist-clad chimney, and polished concrete floor the home’s textures act as furnishings themselves. “Overall, I would say that Arrowtown House is slightly monastic or castle like,” architect Richard Naish tells Archipro, “it’s our attempt to blur the boundaries between nature and architecture.” FULL ARTICLE
If you are into interiors, you have no doubt noticed the growing number of cushions, bedding, and furniture pieces upholstered in this wondrously tactile fabric.
If you are seeking dimension and texture, then bouclé is the fabric for you. With its extremely nubby, looped yarn, bouclé can be used in many applications and although traditionally woven from wool or mohair, it is now produced in cotton, linen, and even silk yarns.
Bouclé refers to both the yarn and the fabric made from the yarn. Known for its interesting visual texture and super-soft touch, there is no doubt that this interior textile is in high demand for residential and commercial schemes.
This hardy fabric is most often seen in white or cream and provides a modernity to any space. The soft handle makes it ideal for curved furniture and it is loved by mid-century enthusiasts, while it’s plushness is equally relished by cushion addicts. The current resurgence of bouclé proves the market just loves a super tactical fabric.
Bouclé also speaks to our current megatrends of nostalgia and escapsim which are a natural evolution of the earlier trends of calm sanctuary and maximalism.
OVER THE PAST FOUR DECADES DAVID SHAW FURNITURE HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS AN INSTITUTION IN NEW ZEALAND’S MANUFACTURING LANDSCAPE
From beginning at a grassroots level to working alongside his daughters Amy and Amanda, David Shaw is one of the country’s foremost manufacturers.
David’s designs have always been innovative, but with a background in fashion retail Amy has brought a new perspective to the brand. Her objective as Creative Director is to maintain the company’s DNA while energizing a forward-thinking approach to furniture design, introducing new materials which challenge their manufacturing processes and posing questions like: “why can’t we put a curve there?”
DESCRIBE YOUR VISION FOR DAVID SHAW FURNITURE
My vision is New Zealand made furniture, but global. Since the pandemic we’ve taken greater control of our supply chain because it’s hard to develop all the things you love offshore. By building our own patterns in our factory we can utilise our team’s
incredible skillset to push the boundaries and create new shapes. Challenging what is available to the local market through thoughtful manufacturing while reassessing the impossible.
We are very lucky that David’s been doing this for 40 years and without disregarding the impressive range that he has built, our offering was quite traditional. David’s a baby boomer and that has always been his market but I’m looking at the next wave of designers and having run my own fashion store and brand for a long time, I knew we also needed to create and grow a digital community around us. Although our website and our social branding have changed, the bones and the heart of the business are the same – the R&D, comfort, well-made furniture, and local suppliers.
