Abbey Road & Barking
Wharf Phase 2
Barking
Authority: Barking & Dagenham
Proposal: Residential-led developments in Barking, including tall buildings, to deliver in the region of 1700 new homes
Services: Built Heritage & Townscape
Status: On Site
Iceni’s Heritage and Townscape advised and supported this complex regeneration and master-planning scheme which included two major residential-led developments in Barking, to deliver circa 1700 new homes.
As part of the wider regeneration of Barking and Dagenham, The Abbey Road and Barking Wharf Phase 2 sites were key sites on either side of the River Roding in Central Barking. The team are providing heritage and townscape support on both projects simultaneously. On the Abbey Road scheme, the team is supporting Iceni’s wider services covering Planning, EIA, Transport, Engagement and Sustainability.
The team have provided baseline assessments to inform design development with architects Broadway Malyan. This formed the basis of pre-application discussions with the local planning authority, Be First (development managers), and Historic England. These documents, including preliminary viewpoint studies, have been key in establishing an agreed starting point for developing schemes that can be supported by Be First and Historic England.
Throughout the project, the team have liaised with the architects and specialist visualisation consultants to aid these discussions, and are now working towards the provision of supporting documentation for the full planning applications on both schemes. This is intended to form part of a comprehensive (and combined) Heritage, Townscape and Visual Impact Assessment document; and the corresponding Environmental Impact Assessment chapters. Combining these strands together enables the team to provide a robust analysis of the proposal in context of the wider regeneration of the area and the vision of the Council.
