The Essence Of Golf
James Giangobbe
Few of us have bad a hole in one, a eagle, a birdie, or nary a par.
Sometimes we have problems with our chips, and our drives don't go straight or far.
Getting out of traps usually takes more than one, and hitting over water is hardly any fun.
Our pitches are often errant, and our putts not always true, but in spite of all our problems, we bravely muddle through. Through the years we've learned that golf is not just a game you play. It's much more than that. Golf affects your life in many a way.
Golf can be a friend, golf can be a foe.
Golf can make you sad, golf can make you glow.
Golf can lift you up a million miles high.
Golf can knock you down, and make you want to cry.
Golf can surround you with beauty, far beyond compare, but when your game is bad, the beauties never there.
Golf can be a mistress that fills your every desire.
Golf can be a demon that traps you in muck and mire.
Golf can test your mettle as nothing else can.
Golf can change a child in-to a man.
Golf can tolerate many barbs and slings.
Golf can even withstand really bad swings.
Yes, there are many things that golf can do, both good and bad, but there is one special thing golf does that really makes me glad. Golf brings strangers together, and turns them into friends, because golf has no prejudice, or ulterior ends.
Golf fosters camaraderie and a love for the game. So if things tum out badly, we've only ourselves to blame.
