Health & Dental Fairs

The group’s health, dental and wellness fair series catered to almost 1,000 residents from West/East Kingston and Old Harbour Bay in St. Catherine. For almost a decade, via our CSR portfolio, the health and wellness fairs have been the marquee health initiative where residents of each community receive free medical, dental, and pharmaceutical services.

The improved health and well-being of the patrons were made possible through our partnerships for this year’s execution. They included: Spanish Town and Kingston Public Hospitals, which committed the doctors needed for the respective days; Sagicor Life and Health, National Health Fund; Prescription Plus; St Catherine Public Health Department; Talk About Your Business Safely (TABS) – which provided HIV and Syphilis Testing; Passport, Immigration, Citizenship Agency (PICA); National Council on Drug Abuse; Pure Country Juices; Family Planning Jamaica; Registrar General Department (RGD) and Beulah Baptist Institutional Church.

JEP Group Pledges Funds for UHWI Dialysis Unit, Appeals for More Support of Kidney Health in Jamaica

In commemoration of World Kidney Day, the Jamaica Energy Partners we donated funds to support the urgent needs of the Haemodialysis Unit at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). To offset an increase in the dialysis unit’s stock, JEP Group pledged monetary support to purchase dialysers, fluids to dialyse patients, heparin, lines, renalin, acid and bicarbonate.

The JEP Group will continue to support the health sector by providing sponsorships necessary to promote quality healthcare to Jamaicans.

Labour Day - Kingston Public Hospital

With health and education being two of the major pillars under our CSR portfolio, Jamaica’s oldest public hospital, KPH, was also selected to receive a facelift – specifically the Renal Unit. During the assessment, we noticed that the building which hosts the Unit used to treat almost 100 patients suffering from kidney-related ailments twice weekly required additional work. Therefore, in addition to the painting, the JEP Group arranged minor touch-ups for the drywall structures, mould treatments and the construction of a covered walkway for patient access during adverse weather conditions.

JEP Donates Air Conditioning to Jamaica Fire Brigade

JEP Group is all about maintaining and strengthening partnerships, and a critical one was that of the Jamaica Fire Brigade’s St Catherine Division. The JFB - no stranger to the JEP Group’s generosity, recently received an air conditioning unit and igloo from us. With this donation, JFB St Catherine Division members will be encouraged and comfortable as they risk their lives for our safety daily.

Blood Drives

The JEP Group hosted three days of lifesaving for its employees across all power plants in December 2022. In collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Service, the fruits of labour witnessed a significant improvement from last year’s efforts. The Bank collected seventy units from eighty-nine registered individuals. Staff members were encouraged to donate as part of JEP’s goal to support the health sector, as one unit of blood can save up to 3 lives, and you never know when you or someone you love may need blood.

Cancer Awareness

Last October, the JEP Group launched its two-month-long prostate/breast cancer awareness campaign to signify our fight against these diseases and to raise funds for the Oncology Unit at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH). The campaign commenced in September with a focus on Prostate Cancer awareness.

Whip-Off baking Competition

Men from each plant accepted the challenge to see who could bake the best blue-themed cake. JEP’s Raj Turner and Marlon Thomas came on top with their blue Chocolate Manilla cake.

JEP Group’s Big League Football Competition

The league starred 33 of the most talented players representing each plant in different shades of blue. The teams included WKPP’s Elite Strikers, JPPC’s Turbine FC and Barge United. At the end of the preliminary matches, Elite Strikers and Turbine FC went head-to-head to determine the winners. At the end of the 90 minutes, WKPP’s Elite Strikers took first place.

PSA Screening

To conclude the month’s activities, the Group engaged men in our neighbouring communities of Old Harbour Bay, Western Kingston, and Eastern Kingston for a follow-up of our free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening initiative, launched last year. As a result, almost 90 men benefitted and if any of them received an abnormally high PSA level, they would be referred to a Urologist. JEP’s corporate citizenship places a strong emphasis on fostering healthier communities.

Paint Smash

Breast Cancer Awareness month kicked off with Paint Smash, a creative space meant to release frustration. Paint Smash gave JEP Group employees the chance to completely release and express their anger with cancer while making art. A unique masterpiece was created that will also be donated to the oncology unit and unveiled during the handover ceremony.

RAYZ for Life

To wrap the breast/prostate awareness campaign, JEP Group hosted its inaugural Rayz for Life Cancer Awareness 5K. For a $1000 registration fee, individuals and companies were invited to run, walk, ride or wheel. The 5:30 am warm-up session began at Emmanuel Baptist Church and at 6:00 am, with over 100 participants, the 5K took place along Norbrook Loop. In the end, WKPP’s Kevin Clarke won in 21 minutes, and 57 seconds.

During the campaign, the Group held an ongoing raffle fundraiser which secured an additional $448,000 toward KPH’s Oncology Unit. The raffle winner won a 58” smart TV.

Reading Without Barriers

Read Across Jamaica Day is recognized annually to promote the significance of reading and literacy locally. It’s also an essential platform for encouraging children to read aloud to others and have others read to them.

This year under the theme, “Reading Without Barriers”, the group decided to focus on students who are able and disabled to participate in a reading exercise that demonstrated their reading abilities, despite their challenges. The participants read a story entitled “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, told from Wolf’s Perspective”.

A student from the school for the blind and deaf community and a student bonded to a wheelchair with various disabilities represented the disabled community. In addition, two abled students from various age groups also read the same story. The video presentation features a popular local sign language broadcaster, Toni Aiken.

Christmas Distribution

The JEP Group promotes a culture of inclusivity and equal opportunities for persons and transcends this practice to those with whom we interact.

For the neighbouring community of Old Harbour Bay, Christmas arrived early for some 670 residents, who received complimentary food packages consisting of starchy, legumes/grains, canned items, and children’s toys courtesy of the JEP Group. Our yearly distribution ensures that the areas in which we operate can thrive, be resilient and sustainable.

Maxfield Park Children’s Home Grateful for Stationery, Students Ready for Exams

Maxfield Park Children’s Home was the beneficiary of stationery items to aid primary and secondary level education students in their upcoming examinations. JEP continues to be a beacon of hope to the disenfranchised through impactful and sustainable contributions that change lives. We are deeply honoured to have been given the opportunity to give back.

In honour of World Senior Citizens Day, the JEP Group celebrated the elderly in our neighbouring communities of Old Harbour Bay, the Denham Town Golden Age Home and Port Royal.

The seniors were treated to a day of excitement, where they told stories of their heyday, sang their favourite melodies - and for those who were able to - danced with members of the CSR Team. The Old Harbour Bay residents also participated in a fashion show, and their day concluded with the highly anticipated Bingo Bash.

At the end of the day’s festivities, all the seniors received tokens, a warm meal and a drink. World Senior Citizens Day is recognized globally on August 21 to honour the elderly and acknowledge their accomplishments. We were glad to use this opportunity to remind those in our communities that they are loved and appreciated.

Tree Planting

To commemorate National Tree Planting Day, a team of almost 100 volunteers journeyed to the Blue Mountain 2 Forest Reserve to restore Jamaica, one tree at a time.

The JEP Group team planted 300 Jamaican Mahogany seedlings under the ‘Adopt a Hillside’ project launched last year. In addition, the Evergo team added 50 Milkwood, Dovewood, Cedar and Soapwood trees at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Holywell, managed by our partners from the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust. The Recreational Park is also home to an Evergo charger (Level 2), which made it an excellent opportunity to conduct the official unveiling of the unit.

The JEP Group now boasts having planted almost 6,000 trees under the ‘Three Million Trees in Three years’ initiative.

1,957 Pounds of Garbage Cleared from Plumb Point Lighthouse, Palisadoes

The group collected over 1,900 pounds of garbage during its annual beach cleanup to tackle one of the environmental issues currently grappling our country – pollution. The most popular items found at that location included plastic bottles, plastic utensils, plastic containers, baby toys, batteries, old appliances, lighters, plastic bottle caps, and even electrical outlets. At the end of the exercise, the team collected more than 120 bags of plastic waste.

Jamaica Environment Trust

JEP was pleased to renew its corporate membership with this powerhouse of an NGO. The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) is among the most vocal groups in the country and has demonstrated its commitment to preserving Jamaica’s natural resources since 1991.

The organization has successfully led various environmental activities, including programmes and advocacy campaigns, school-based and public educational initiatives, cleanups, environmental competitions and award ceremonies. Additionally, through various corporate and government sponsorships, JET is empowered to lead the charge in ecological preservation across Jamaica.

Montego Bay Marine Park

“Conserving and restoring the coastal resources of Montego Bay for the maximum sustainable benefit to traditional users, the community and the nation” is the mission of the Montego Bay Marine Park (MBMP).

Located by the breathtaking Montego Bay Pier, the local NGO actualises these goals through programmes for public education, financial support, monitoring and interpretive enforcement.

But how do non-profit organizations like MBMP stay afloat? Annually, these entities have to rely on donor relations, which include the benevolence of companies like Jamaica Energy Partners, to accomplish their business goals and sustain payroll.

For over 20 years, JEP has been a friend to MBMP through quarterly donations aimed at protecting the environment. What a partnership! JEP is always elated to support their initiatives and upholds this commitment through quarterly contributions that assist with expenses and their awareness campaigns.

Scholarship ‘Energy’ Games

The JEP Group changed sixty-four lives for the better in 2022 courtesy of its Scholarships Programme – the first in the company’s history!

Customarily, JEP would award ten students residing in St Catherine, Western Kingston, Eastern Kingston, and Port Royal with educational assistance. However, considering Jamaica’s 60th year of independence, the Group interviewed 60 candidates out of 140 students and then selected 20 to receive tertiary scholarships and grants. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education & Youth was responsible for choosing the other 44 students based on their academic performance and location.

To celebrate our almost J$25-million-dollar investment in our students and their academic success, we decided to forgo our traditional award ceremony and opt for something memorable and fun – a sporting event. The sports day signified to students that though academic excellence has resulted in them obtaining the scholarship, obstacles and challenges may come their way. However, they can continue achieving greatness through hard work, perseverance, teamwork, and mentorship.

Labour Day - Blackwood Gardens Basic School

The Blackwood Gardens Basic School in Old Harbour Bay, St Catherine, was identified to be in dire need of painting and other minor repairs. Knowing that Basic Schools rely heavily on school fees that parents often neglect to pay and equally understanding the economic realities they face, JEP decided to help ease the burden by making their space more appealing, comfortable and conducive to learning.

School Feeding

The JEP Group School Feeding Programme continues to support students and parents across our neighbouring communities. Thankfully, the education sector reverted to normalcy last year, with students returning to face-to-face classes. As a result, the food items we had provided during the pandemic could now prepare warm, nutritious meals for the children. JEP Group promises that its contributions will not cease, as ensuring students have a healthy meal to stay alert and focused during classes is our priority.

Jamaica Energy Partners Cricket League

Last year, the JEP Cricket League resumed after 2-year hiatus! The Portmore-based Super Sixers wrapped up a perfect season following a 35-run win over Packers AllStars at the Port Esquivel Sports Club in St. Catherine. The JEP Group anticipates continuing the competition, which promotes teamwork and discipline and aims to allow these youngsters to improve their skills to excel in the local and regional space.

Robotics Competition

During Energy Month, Evergo Jamaica hosted the second staging of its Secondary Schools’ Robotics Competition. York Castle High School claimed first place, dethroning the 2021 victors Jamaica College who came in second place. Third was Calabar High School. This competition, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education, challenged senior high school students to learn the fundamentals of robotics, which included programming, control, and design. The students battled for the firstplace title and a cash prize of $125,000. Second place earned $75,000, and third, received $50,000.

Tivoli Gardens Football Club (FC)

WKPP provided financial support to the Tivoli Gardens FC as they sought to win the National Premier League, popularly known as the Red Stripe Premier League.

The funds provided meals and refreshments for the players throughout the competition. The famous football tournament ran from January to July 2022 and featured twelve teams across Kingston & St. Andrew, St. Catherine and Clarendon. WKPP was happy to support the members of the Tivoli Gardens FC since the league also promotes proper sportsmanship and unity among the teams, provides income for the players and their families, and encourages earnings for small and medium business operators.

Blackwood Gardens Sports Day

We were elated to join the Blackwood Gardens Basic School for their Sports Day last year and happily repped for Dr. Bird (red) House. The 2022 staging would have been the school’s first sports day since 2019 due to COVID-19.
