HEY CDL. I am Bud Gray and I have worked for CDL for five years and nine months as a Signal Maintainer. This is my first job in the railroad industry, and I’m currently located in Elkview, WV- KNWA. I love this job and the great people I work with and have enjoyed all the jobs I have had the opportunity to help on.

I am originally from West Virginia and enjoy spending time with my wife and four kids, and fishing during my off time. If I could have lunch with one famous person, it would be Donald Trump. My favorite type of food is steak and I like traveling to and experiencing new places.

Anything is difficult if you make it that way, but if I could give advice to someone interested in the railroad industry, I would encourage them to put their time and effort in and it will pay off, as it is an awesome industry to be a part of. My favorite part of the job is troubleshooting.

Thorco started business in Lamar, MO in 1899, and was then acquired and restarted by CDL in January of 2021. We are considered a one stop shop for all things wire fabrication including Wire Bending, prototyping, in house design and engineering, and powder coating.

We have hired an extremely efficient crew (pictured below), and they all deserve great recognition. Each and every one of them have put in a lot of hard work to make us successful, as we navigate restarting this company. Furthermore, we have added a small network of outside sales representatives and the results from them, so far, point to continued growth.

We have recently provided grids to Green Steel in Madison, MS. These grids are specifically. used in airport construction projects. We also recently completed and shipped our first order to Crossland Construction precast plant in Columbus, KS. Additionally, we are mid-way through a large order for Midwest Block & Brick who is the regional distributor for Quikrete.

So far we have managed to deliver a few days ahead of schedule on these projects and the customers have been very pleased and are ready to do additional projects with us. We are proud and excited about the current growth, as well as the upcoming success that we will see.

CURRENT EVENTS We have participated in a number of career fairs and conferences the last month in an attempt to not only hire new team members and network, but to better serve our current team members and customers. The OEMA Conference that we attended provided an opportunity to learn, grow, and network with colleagues, ensuring we understand the latest and best practices to better serve and protect our community.

PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER BASICS Information available from the U.S. Fire Administration indicates nationwide there are approximately 1.8 million fires annually that cause an average of 4,200 deaths and 24,900 injuries. More than 100 people die from fires in California each year. Becoming familiar with the use a portable fire extinguisher may prevent or reduce fire related death, injuries, and damage.

Four Types of Fires 1. Class A. Fires in ordinary combustible materials such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber, and many plastics.

2. Class B. Fires in flammable or combustible liquids, gases, greases, and some rubber and plastic materials.

3. Class C. Fires that involve energized electrical equipment where the electrical nonconductivity of the extinguishing media is important.

4. Class D. Fires in combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, and potassium.

Portable Fire Extinguisher Use and Requirements Portable fire extinguisher use is limited to those Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) employees that voluntarily agree to use them.

ANR employees are not authorized to fight structure fires -- immediately call 911.

Never use a portable fire extinguisher on a fire that is beyond its capacity (i.e., a structure fire).

Always use the properly rated portable fire extinguisher for the type of fire. For example, an ABC rated portable fire extinguisher may be used on Class A, Class B, or Class C fires.

The acronym “PASS” is used to remember the steps for deploying a portable fire extinguisher as follows: P – Pull the pin.

A – Aim the extinguisher nozzle toward the base of the flames.

S – Squeeze the trigger while holding the extinguisher canister upright.

S – Sweep the extinguisher from side to side, causing the fire area to be covered.

Always use a portable fire extinguisher while you are located between an escape route and the fire.

Never attempt to use a portable fire extinguisher if the fire has spread beyond its starting point.

Always leave the fire area whenever: 1. the escape route becomes threatened; 2. the portable fire extinguisher becomes depleted; or 3. the fire becomes uncontrollable.

All portable fire extinguishers shall be inspected monthly and undergo an annual maintenance inspection.
