JAIMI YRA ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Architecture is the built form of a history lecture, the vision of an architect, the experiences of a community and an inspiration for the future. Architecture tells a thousand stories without saying a single word. My story, beginning as a young immigrant and progressing to a young professional, has invariably driven my work. Architecture is so much more than simply creating beautiful structures. There is a cause and effect to architecture. An effective design should reveal the passions, stories, and dreams of not only its creator, but also its audience. I’ve learned to understand architecture as a means to articulate our experiences through analyzing and interpreting the world in which we live. Our experiences are components of our culture, the society we inhabit, our inspirations, and our personal values.

The site of this project required a new zoning during the subdivision. Numerous complications were dealt with during the subdivision and development permit application due to the covenants and riparian area within the property. Provided several iterations for the city for required 5m easements and setbacks within property. Negotiations were completed back and forth for several weeks to determine a site iteration that met all the needs of the city, the client, and the community.

commercial trail, british columbia february - july 2012 nejmark architects $750,000 loblaw companies ltd.
As a project coordinator for Nejmark Architects, I worked mainly on commercial projects ranging from Scotiabank to Staples. However, my main responsibility was to oversee projects related to No Frills and Extra Foods. I completed all stages for each project: providing a project schedule to the client; producing construction documents (including building code review); tender phase; building permit applications; contract administration (including construction site visits); and continued until substantial completion. I worked closely with the clients, coordinated drawings with the engineers, and managed other coordinators working on No Frills projects. Many of the projects, such as the No Frills in Trail, BC renovated an existing Extra Foods and subdivided the space into two; a CRU space and a smaller grocery store, No Frills. Construction budgets ranged from $400,000 to $900,000.

heritage building renovation lower fort garry national historical site, manitoba september 2015 - april 2016 republic architecture inc. public works government canada
The project consists of a renovation to the main building, Big House, in the Lower Fort Garry National Historical Site. The intent is to provide a four season event venue with washroom facilities, heating, proper lighting and barrier-free access in both the main and basement floors of the Big House. The proposed design of the project included an extension to the north side of the building, the Shed, which houses the barrier-free lift and vestibule. The design of the shed needed to comply with FHBRO (Federal Heritage Building Review Office) requirements as well as be distinguishable to the character defining elements of the existing building. The new addition seeks to be simple and unobtrusive in design.

heritage building recapitalization
The subordinate and contemporary character of the proposed new shed was communicated materially through contrast to the Big House's stone walls. The primary cladding for the exterior walls of the shed is horizontally-oriented wood siding, painted white. During the design development phase, a design to light up the exterior cladding was proposed. The proposal included a substratum of lighting hidden behind the siding. This feature would be nearly invisible to visitors during the daytime, preserving the commemorative integrity of the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. However, during evening events, this lighting feature could be activated, to add both site lighting and visual interest to the experience of the site.

from excess to access A NEW FORM OF FOOD DISTRIBUTION IN WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - MASTERS THESIS
PROJECT TYPE: LOCATION: DATE: ADVISOR:
master of architecture thesis winnipeg, manitoba september 2014 - april 2015 professor roger connah
Global food production and distribution to cities have created opportunities and difficulties, simultaneously. The problems caused by today’s methods of food production continue to grow: increasing carbon emissions, the formation of food deserts, a lack of public knowledge regarding the content of food, and related health issues are examples. Exploring global and local development and distribution, this thesis aimed to explore how food production and distribution has evolved over time, as well as how agricultural technology and architectural design can contribute to a new form of food distribution in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The intent is to redirect and transform the current state of the global food system from a position of excess to a state of access, whereby affordable nutritious, locally produced food is readily available to consumers.
N
Through the rehabilitation of the abandoned James Avenue Pump House Station in downtown Winnipeg, a new network and form of food distribution using sourcing, localization and accessibility is proposed.

The program played a major role in the design of the Food Exchange Hub. The program consists of: a year round farmer’s market; cold storage area; educational/nutritional centre; community kitchen; indoor/ outdoor community gardens and local agriculture community education centre; and a depot for mobile grocery trucks. This program will be designed in parallel with the history of the building, meaning the machines and architectural characteristics will remain intact at the James Avenue Pump House station.

PROJECT TYPE: LOCATION: DATE: PROFESSOR: TEAM MEMBERS
m.arch studio 1 ottawa, ontario september - december 2013 claudio sgarbi tzvetelina videnova (m.arch students) marc falardau (business student)
The project required a collaboration between students from the Masters of Architecture program and the Sprott School of Business. The project explored the potential relocation of the Sprott School of Business to Albert Island, on the outskirts of Downtown Ottawa. The location is rich with history. Strata emphasizes the importance of the schools connection to the business communities of both Ottawa and Gatineau. The design of Strata is shaped by the history of the site. It incorporates two facades which indicates the importance of the industrial era of the 1900's. These facades surround the heart of Sprott, the auditorium, where the majority of the school's classes and events take place. The project was a team collaboration between architecture graduate students and undergraduate business students.

laneway housing EC:0 STUDIO - UNDERGRADUATE PROJECT
PROJECT TYPE: LOCATION: DATE: PROFESSOR:
arch. studio 4 toronto, ontario september - december 2008 peter sampson
Incorporating sustainable design strategies was the main objective of the studio. However, the term sustainability was not limited to building design. This project focused on the lifestyle of families living in one of downtown Toronto's prestigious and costly neighbourhoods, the South Annex. As determined by research and interviews, many of the families in the neighbourhood hire nannies to help take care of their children. In many ways, the nannies act as stabilizers of the social ecology. Nannies improve the efficiency of the household so parents can provide a better economic future for their families. However, nannies often struggle to find efficiency in their own lives, working long hours and traveling long distances to and from work on a daily basis. The proposed site is positioned in the laneway of 184 Lippincott Street. The proposal is to supply laneway housing for nannies. This reduces time, energy and inefficiency.
Prefabricated housing requires less time and energy to build, thus making it more efficient, while also reducing production waste. The intention is to design easy to assemble components on site, which use a numerical system. 23

This is an intermediate exploration of a working instrument that mediates between a person and their environment. The instrument sits between a person, their body, and their environment, and provides a personal method to establish dwelling. This particular instrument is designed to measure comfort. When touched on the metal strips, a sound is created. The tones change with the person’s comfort level. The measurements are conducted using heart rates, respiration, and perspiration.
