Dear Notre Dame High School Graduates & Friends, As you turn the pages in this edition of the Notre Dame LegeND, I hope life at ND comes alive for you. Memories of your time here at ND will hopefully flood your mind with all the pivotal experiences of your youth that came to shape your adult life. We are thrilled to continue to provide these experiences to the young women of Notre Dame today.

Our commitment is to educate each young woman inside and outside of the classroom. As you read, you will see the life of today’s ND Rebel is one that is filled with a diversity of experiences, faith and tradition.

Our mission to educate confident, compassionate, Christian women leaders is embedded in all we do at Notre Dame. Notre Dame has worked strategically to provide new and enriched opportunities in academic course offerings and experiences, service learning, and all facets of a Notre Dame education. While the way we teach today is different than when many of our alumnae attended ND, we still embrace the hallmarks of a true ND education. Our graduates are grateful for their mastery of skills in the area of content knowledge, time-management and self-advocacy. Through our mission and your most generous support, we are proud to carry on the legacy of Notre Dame High School.

The halls of ND are bursting with students, opportunity and faith. It is hard to believe that soon we will wish the class of 2020 farewell and welcome the newest Notre Dame legacies, class of 2024, to the family.

We are grateful for our growth and the opportunity to educate these young women. We know that tuition is at an all-time high for families.

We, again, thank you for your support through Notre Dame’s annual fund and our events which assist in keeping tuition increases at a minimum.

The work ahead for all of us at Notre Dame is truly exciting. I thank you for your support and ask for prayers as we carry on the mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

S CH OO L N EW S L EA DER S H I P AWARD In October, Emma Love '20 was recognized by the St. Louis County Government as ND’s 2019 Outstanding Student Leader.

Emma practices her leadership skills in our school community by serving as Senior Class President.

A R CH STL YO UTH SUMMIT Six of our students were selected to attend a Youth Summit hosted by the Archdiocese of St. Louis in November after submitting an essay. They joined other area high schools in discussions about faith, social media and treatment of others.

AC A ESSAY AWARD The Annual Catholic Appeal invites high school juniors to participate in an essay scholarship contest each year. Congrats to our students Shannon Dooley, Anna Rose Diel and Grace Corzine who were the scholarship recipients for ND!

MA E A C API TO L EXHIBIT Congratulations to Caroline Slade (10), Sara Winkelmann (10), Megan Dwyer (11), and Catherine Brummet (11) whose artwork was chosen for the Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA) Youth Art Month Capitol Exhibit!

ML K MO DEL O F JUSTICE Kiki Lloyd ‘20 was honored in January with the Martin Luther King Jr. Model of Justice Award by the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

She has showed a true commitment to justice and service to others during her time at Notre Dame.

W W T STEM STUD ENT FORUM ND was the only all-girl school selected to participate in the STEM Student Forum hosted by World Wide Technology! Ten of our students are developing a “solution” for a STEM related “challenge” in our school that they will present at the end of February.

TIM EZELL V ISITS ND ESPORTS Tim Ezell from Fox 2 News visited our Esports Team in September. He highlighted our awesome program and even tried his hand at a game with the students.

Our Esports Team is the second all-girl high school team in the nation! Our STEM coordinator and esports coach, David Brosch, has worked hard to engage our students with STEM — competitive video gaming is just one of the ways ND is building that foundation.

S CH OO L N EW S VARSITY TENNIS D ISTRIC TS ND's Varsity Tennis won district for the first time in school history! Sam Bratcher '20 and Lexi Bush '21 placed in individual district; Maria McAuliffe '21 and Samantha Ramay '21 placed in doubles district. The team finished the season with a 13-3 record.

COLLEGE ATHLETES Four of our senior athletes signed their letters of intent to play sports at the collegiate level. Annalise Beck (soccer) with Quincy University, Carlee Gilham (softball) with St. Louis Community College, Tia Marlinghaus (lacrosse) with Methodist University and Zoey Vogel (soccer) with Rockhurst University.

ROBOTICS MEET AT ND The Robotics Team built the playing field and prepped the robot inspection stations for a meet hosted at ND. They are currently ranked 11th in the East MO Conference.

They will compete in the conference qualifier for a chance to advance to state.

FALL P L AY — LITTLE WOMEN A FA L L F E STI VAL T R A D I T I ON The 66th annual Fall Festival was blessed with perfect weather. Funky Freshmen, Southern Sophomores, Junior Jocks and Senior Story sold raffle tickets and cheered on their class favorites throughout the day.

The seniors ultimately took home the crown — Moira Healy '19 returned to crown Chloe Klevorn '20 as the Fall Festival Queen.

Our fall production of "Little Women" was a huge success. Our cast and crew worked hard to tell this classic story with a modern day twist! They put on three performances at the end of October. Be sure to check out our Spring Musical — "Annie" this April.

WINTER CONCERT & RECITAL Our annual Winter Concert & Dance Recital was in December. It was a great showcase of the hard work our talented students put in all semester. There were performances by Show Choir, Chorus and the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced dancers.

S O L I DA R I TY PI LGR I MAGE TO THE BORD ER Ten of our students had the opportunity to travel to the U.S. Mexico Border in El Paso at the beginning of November. The group experienced life along the border and gained new perspectives. They even met Bishop Seitz of El Paso and celebrated Mass at the Border on All Souls Day! One foundation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame is to transform the world through education. These students returned home with a deeper understanding of current social justice issues our faith community is facing. They were enlightened and prepared to carry on our mission. When the group returned, they shared stories of their trip with the rest of the ND community. Sophie Bornefeld '20 said, "Going on this trip was a chance to use my privilege to experience the hardships that migrants encounter. It was a chance to experience something that breaks your heart but gives you hope in that same moment. Love knows no borders and this experience definitely showed that."

P RO- LIFE MARCH IN D.C. "Love Never Fails" was the motto our students marched behind this year at the March for Life in Washington D.C. Notre Dame had over seventy students attend the march either with ND or with their parish.

Our students joined over 2,400 people from the St. Louis area alone to protest the practice and legality of abortion. During their pilgrimage, they had the chance to experience programming speaker sessions, daily mass, adoration and reconciliation in addition to the march itself. Before traveling back home, our students were led on a tour of the capitol by history teacher Melissa Reh McDaniel '00.

They visited the U.S. Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial. Clare Keeven '20 said this about her experience, "During programming, a speaker said nothing goes unplanned. I thought that was very eye-opening. It spoke to me in the sense that God really has a plan for us and we have to learn to accept his gifts rather than push them away, whether they are expected or not."

COSTA RIC A SUMMER 20 2 0

In October, Momoko Tanaka and Kayano Kojima from Notre Dame Kyoto visited our campus. They spent a month sharing their culture and experiencing ND with our students. Thank you to the Chrapek and Durandisse families for hosting them.

Students will be traveling to Costa Rica this summer for a language immersion opportunity. They will be communicating in Spanish during the trip. Activities include a coffee plantation tour, a rainforest excursion, cooking lessons and more.

Caitlin (Coburn) Murphy ’05 is a true ND Rebel. A remarkable woman who shows exemplary integrity, continues to surpass her personal goals, a trailblazer and an expert in a male-dominated industry of international business logistics. Her faith and core values that were nurtured at ND, have given her the strength and courage to pursue her life passions while empowering other women along the way.

Caitlin Murphy exemplifies the Notre Dame High School mission in a modern world.

First few years as an Alum…Caitlin graduated in 2005 and went on to receive a BSBA dual degree in International Business with a focus in Mandarin at the University of Missouri Columbia. In 2007 she attended Peking University in Beijing and completed an intensive foreign language program that sparked her love for Chinese culture and a passion for business and language arts — which inevitably led her back to Beijing in 2009. In 2010 after launching her career in international business overseas, she was called to reflect on her life and ultimately allowed faith to guide her path back home to St. Louis.

Why she started her company…After several years of fighting against the current in the international logistics industry, Caitlin saw a growing problem and knew she could not only solve it but simply put, do it better. In 2017, she set out to provide superior shipping solutions and founded Global Gateway Logistics (GGL), a freight forwarding firm providing ocean, air and ground transportation for a variety of commodities. GGL generated $2M of revenue the first year and in 2019 Caitlin was honored by the Tory Burch Foundation as being named one of only fifty Tory Burch Fellows selected each year.

Honor and inspiration…The Tory Burch Fellowship is a program that invests in the success and sustainability of women-owned small businesses by providing access to capital, entrepreneurial education, mentoring and exclusive networking opportunities. In addition to the weeklong immersive workshop in NYC, Caitlin was among only a few to actually pitch her company to a panel of remarkable individuals, including Tory Burch herself.

A modern rebel with a vision…Caitlin saw a problem and had the valor and knowledge to believe in herself to make a difference. Her company’s mission is to create jobs and apprenticeship programs specifically for women in logistics and target lower socioeconomic individuals in St. Louis to explore and build a lasting career. In conjunction with this concept, Caitlin has begun to build a disruptive, universal technology that will simplify global logistics for any size company with shipping needs. She is hopeful God will use her passion for philanthropy and her knowledge of logistics to do his will.

Multiple roles… As a millennial female CEO, she continues to break barriers in international business with the constant support of her wonderful family. Caitlin married Evan Murphy in 2011 and are members of St. Clement Parish in Des Peres. It is a full house with son Wynn (8), daughter Lily (6) and two energetic goldendoodles! Philanthropy is one of her passions in life and outside her personal business role she resides as a board member for the organization Camp Circle Star, a disabled children’s summer camp in Missouri.

Notre Dame has had such an impact on my life.

I cultivated CHARACTER , PHILANTHROPY , DISCIPLINE and ENDURANCE among many other values during my time at ND. The sisterhood that I experienced in high school has been a motivation to continue to encourage and support women in all areas of my life.

01 Verna Schnurbusch Buchheit '42 turned 100 years old on June 3, 2019. She is one of Notre Dame's oldest living alumna and is a very proud graduate.

02 Bridget Barhorst Schmidt '85 appeared on Family Fued with her family in May 2019.

The Schmidt family won five times and walked away with over $40,000. Bridget plans to donate a portion of their winnings to charity and to take a trip with her husband to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

03 Katie Mankus McClung '00 and husband John welcomed their son, Wallace James, on February 8, 2019. Big sister Maggie is loving her new role!

04 Kimberly Dobberstein Huelsing '07 and husband Andrew welcomed their first child, Tyler Lawrence, on June 20, 2019. Proud grandma is Jessica Goewert Dobberstein '76 and proud aunt is Kristen Dobberstein O'Connell '06.

05 Mary Scherr '11 married Bryan Mathews on November 15, 2018 at Walt Disney World.

06 Joyce Niedzwiecki '01 married Jason Haege on June 22, 2019. Matron of Honor was Lauren Niedzwiecki Hessler '05. Mother of the Bride is Nancy Rola Niedzwiecki '73.

07 Sarah Thompson Whitworth '01 and husband Dan welcomed their first child, Lucy Rose, on February 22, 2019.

08 Karen Venverloh Bewig '78 published the second edition of her e-book Memoirs of a Century in St. Louis on Amazon Kindle. The book is a collection of stories her grandmother, Louise Schmidt Venverloh, experienced and shared over her 100 years of life.
