Notre Dame High School educates young women to become confident, compassionate Christian leaders. Each student is guided to reach the fullness of her potential and to use her gifts to make a difference in the world around her. Notre Dame High School provides a college preparatory program to girls from diverse backgrounds through an environment of differentiated instruction. In the spirit of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and in response to the mission of Jesus in the Catholic tradition, students are educated to integrate lifelong learning, faith and service into their lives.

This is a return to Notre Dame for Mr. Bayens. He is a past parent (Jessica Bayens Mueckl ‘11) and he served as Athletic Director from 2011 to 2020. Mr. Bayens began his career as a teacher and coach in the Rockwood School District before joining Notre Dame as AD. He most recently served as the President of his high school alma mater, Bishop DuBourg High School. He has a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Health from the University of Missouri Columbia, a master's degree in Education from Maryville University, and a master's degree in Education Administration from Lindenwood University.
Mr. Bayens and his wife, Cheryl, have four children. They are members of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish in South County.
In April, Dr. Meghan Bohac '98 announced her resignation after seven years at Notre Dame High school. We are thankful for everything Dr. Bohac has done for our school community, and we wish her all the best! I have come to know so many in our ND family. We have grown together in faith, spirit and community during my tenure. I thank you for welcoming me and my family into yours. I will miss each of you. I am grateful for all the work and support ND has given me both internally and externally.
WelcomeMr.Bayens
FROM THE NDHS PRESIDENT 04 TheDearLegeNDAlumnae and Friends, I am excited to, once again , find myself on E. Ripa — this time in a new role with a different perspective. I have been part of this community for many years. I had the privilege of sending my daughter to NDHS and served as Athletic Director for nine years. Both allowed me to experience firsthand the education and values this institution instills in young women. During my short time back, one thing reigns true: Notre Dame High School is firmly united in mission and community, now more than ever. I am grateful that my return feels like picking up where I left off with an old friend. Thank you to everyone who has made the transition a welcoming process. It is comforting to see how ND’s unique and spirited school community continues to grow. The collective success of our supporters and allies, such as yourself, is evident within this edition of The LegeND . I hope you can see that Notre Dame remains steadfast, making waves as we step into our next voyage upon the S.S.N.D. Join me in praying that ND will continue to excel in our educational approach and find ways to celebrate our student successes and alumnae achievements while staying connected to our faithful and true hearted Notre Dame community.
Gratefully, MR. MARK BAYENS President

Sister Jan began teaching at Notre Dame High School in the fall of 1986. After dedicating 35 years , she retired at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. She made many connections throughout the years. Whether she was teaching Theology, Social Studies or Spanish, Sister Jan always shared her love for the SSND mission and was a social justice role model for hundreds of ND grads.

On May 25, we celebrated Sister Jan with a send-off party. It was wonderful to see alumnae, current and past faculty members, as well as fellow SSND on campus to honor her. A champagne toast , given by past colleagues Mrs. Mary Godefroid '64 and Mrs. Liz Miller, culminated the joyous evening. We want to thank Sister Jan for being one of Notre Dame's greatest teachers over the last 3+ decades. She was always willing to go above and beyond for our young women. Her presence at ND will be greatly missed. Thank you for everything and happy retirement , Sister Jan! 35

Pastor Brandon Wilkes from the St. Louis Reconciliation Network led a service for our students that focused on racial harmony, Christian unity and peace. The service also included a praise dance performed by several of our black students.

HEIDY JUAREZ '22
Heidy Juarez is a true ND success story. She is a first generation American with a tight-knit family, who came to Notre Dame on a scholarship. While at ND, Heidy worked hard academically and also immersed herself into roles that developed her leadership skills. She was an ambassador for future students, Kairos leader and member of the lacrosse and cheerleading teams. At first, she was unsure what her journey would look like. Notre Dame's Advisor Program and Counseling Department helped Heidy realize her future goals were attainable. Her hard work led to her being awarded several scholarships. She will be attending Saint Louis University with a full ride . Heidy plans on majoring in biology and working in the dental industry. ND is thankful that we are able to assist young women like Heidy reach their full potential.

THE FUTURE OF ND DEPENDS ON ALUMNAE WHO ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO THE WAY PEOPLE THINK, FEEL AND ACT TOWARD NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL AND THE COMMUNITIES IT SERVES.
ROSIE'S ROSTER will be a deconstructed alum board that allows ND to meet YOU where you are in your life. It will offer various degrees of involvement, but all the options will provide a way to give back to Notre Dame. Maybe you want to volunteer at or be a sponsor for Fall Festival... Maybe you want to join a focus group or help us find lost alum... Maybe you just want to purchase new pillows for The Commons... Our goal is to increase collaboration with alum while being mindful of the modern day struggle to lead a balanced life. When you add your name to Rosie’s Roster, you are not committing to anything... yet . You will simply be given access to "The List" — and you can then decide how you would like to contribute your time and talents on your terms.

We believe we can do better at creating opportunities for alum engagement at ND. As the landscape of secondary education continues to evolve in St. Louis, alum will play an even more vital role in our school’s reputation. We need an army of alum who are willing to be ever loyal advocates and ambassadors for Notre Dame.

FROM THE NDHS ARCHIVES
.
The now annual celebration took place inside the newly built gym. Game booths lined the perimeter, decorations adorned the walls and class favorites vied over the crown.
FALL FESTIVAL
Fall Festival as we know it today started as a year-long penny collection to raise money for a new gym before being dubbed the Penny Party in 1953.
ND Alumnae that have experienced Fall Festival know the spirit this event conjures, and now you know why. It was created out of enthusiasm and raw admiration. For 68 years, Fall Festival has captured the unique spirit of an institution we hold ever loyal in our hearts.
Students held a final assembly to celebrate reaching their goal and crowned Mary Therese Holzen '57 , who had collected $208 worth of pennies, Queen of The Penny Pile . These young women proved that they were, without a doubt, faithful and true hearted . Because of their pure dedication and determination, the new Notre Dame High School dream would become a reality.
The NDHS Fall Festival is ANCHORED IN TRADITION
The local response was overwhelming. At Notre Dame, ingenuity reigned , and the penny pile kept growing. After three months, their drive was complete.
The Million Penny Drive, in turn, transformed the Penny Party; the following fall, it became Fall Festival
In 1955, the students launched The Million Penny Drive in hopes of saving Notre Dame High School. The School Sisters of Notre Dame were expanding Notre Dame College and needed the space (the now motherhouse) being used to teach the high school classes. The pennies collected in the drive would help Notre Dame High School build a BRAND NEW BUILDING and thus keep the school open . The drive was described as an unusual burst of teen sincerity by local publications. The students started a friendly competition. The freshman and seniors took on the sophomores and juniors, doing anything to collect pennies — babysitting, breaking piggy banks and hosting bake sales at Sears. Students put on variety shows with admission fees, asked for pennies outside local businesses and even organized a parade for publicity. A newspaper in San Antonio, Texas covered the spirited fundraiser — ND Girls were so passionate about preserving their school, they could be heard hundreds of miles away!

I made the best memories just hanging out in the library with my friends. I could go into the library any time of the day, and they would be at a table in the back. I have found the social work field to be an extremely rewarding profession. I am incredibly grateful that I found an agency and job that doesn't always feel like work. I would always encourage others to live in another city, even if it is only for a year or two. For me, especially when I was younger, living in a new city was a time of great personal growth.
I miss being close to family! After having a child, I realize how amazing it would be to have an extra layer of support.
After graduating college, I did a program called Jesuit Volunteer Corps. It brought me to New Orleans, where I worked at a homeless day center called the Harry Tompson Center. It was during that year that I fell in love with New Orleans as well as my job placement. After my volunteer year, I returned home. Two weeks later, Hurricane Katrina landed, and I found myself longing to return to New Orleans. I returned to New Orleans in 2007 and started working at the HTC as Assistant Director. I absolutely love where I work. At HTC, I am able to build community with a diverse group of people every day. New Orleans has a small town feel, the music is amazing and people find a reason to celebrate everything!

I took a management job with a bookstore chain and got my first exposure to the world of publishing. Four years later, I made the jump from bookstores to the publishing side of the business. I moved to New York to handle national accounts for Putnam, moved on to William Morrow and finally into the Publisher's chair for a Swiss company in Zürich. I held that position until I retired from living on a plane and started my own boutique publishing house. Now let's backtrack to senior retreat; one of the exercises was predicting what our classmates would be doing in the future. I was surprised to hear someone saw me running a publishing company in NYC. I laughed at the time, and the conversation became a distant memory. Thirty-six years later, it might have been fate or luck, but it was definitely not the plan.
Staying Connected
3) As you move up the ladder, pull the women behind you up with you
Forever a Rebel I credit Notre Dame for helping me become a strong, confident, independent and brave woman willing to take on whatever came my way. I didn’t always come out a winner, but I was always up to the challenge.
1) Ask lots of questions and show an interest in what others are doing outside your department
4) Never give up on your dreams; sometimes they take a little longer to be fulfilled
Pay It Forward
Dear Old Notre Dame
2) Don't wait for someone to take you by the hand and teach you what you need to know; pursue it on your own
