What is a dissertation? A dissertation (German: Doktorarbeit) is a scientific work, through which you can achieve the highest possible educational degree and thus the doctorate. Write your dissertation in 6 steps Of course, it makes a huge difference whether you write your dissertation in medicine or linguistics. Nevertheless, there are certain stages that you will go through in this process and which we would like to present to you in more detail as a small directional guide.
1. Preparation In the first step, you will take care of things that do not have too much to do with your dissertation itself. At least not with the writing process, but with the planning of a dissertation. First of all, you have to find a topic that you are interested in and that is feasible within the
framework of a dissertation (cf. Kornmeier, 2018). In the course of this, you will of course also need a supervisor who will accompany you on this path. Who is allowed to become a doctoral supervisor is defined in the doctoral regulations of your faculty, for example at the University of Marburg. 2. Research & Investigation Now it starts! You will spend a large part of your time on research your research. These form the basis of your dissertation and must be carried out thoroughly, conscientiously, and extensively. Make sure that your text is written in a scientific style. Proper citation is also super important.
4. Review & Perfect The last sentence is written, the footnotes are complete, and the literature management is finished. Please don't hand it in yet and in any case, read over your thesis again within a few day's distances! Think about how much time, sleepless nights, and effort you have put into your text! This works as a cumulative dissertation, in a monograph, as an online publication, print version, in a publishing house or you simply publish it yourself.
