The tower is the re-versal of the tower. The tower is the counter-intuitive tower. Through a series of “inconvenience”, the project attempts to discover nuances within the existing conventions of design. In the search for raw materials of design, the columns in the mass timber construction tower increase in thickness and decrease in quantity as the floor rises.

Similarly, the beam depth decrease with height. The scatter inner core became a spatial instigator rather than a mere functional necessity. The result became the inverse of a tower, but at the forefront of sustainable tower construction.

Site locates on the intersection between 7th and Mateo St.

The pointy archy lamella geometry is arrayed diagonally across the site to house necessary building programs.

A diagonal cut seperates building programs and began direct circulations through out the site.

An evolution from the diagrid structure, the lamella system enhances its structure capability through the shifting of joints to the middle of every member. The Museum, situated in heart of Los Angeles Art District, attempts to re-interprets the role of the structure through the deployment of Lamella. As buildings are born naked and therefore need clothing. In today’s constructional technology, a facade is a thin mantle draped over the skeleton of the building.

The facade acts as both a mantle draped over the structural skeleton and an expression of the building’s public significance. Together, the structure and the skin becomes a manifestation than a simple system necessity.

As the two lamellas shifts in position, each individual arch varies according to programatic and founctional needs.

End lamella are taken out to leivate the corner condition, as well as provide 30% out-door space.

The outward thrust produced by each arch is reduced by each adjecent structure. Finally, the field of lamella sturcutre is contained and held together by a exterior bounding wall, running continously around the entire structure.

Feral Objects in Los Angeles Design Studio II · Fall 2016 Los Angeles, California Instructor: Lauren Lynn

Itself a manifestation of the typical Southern California life, the lifeguard post off the coast of Manhattan beach is specifically symbolic to Los Angeles. Through a series of explositions and rotations, the previously conformed object was stripped away of its original program functions. The end product is a single family house re-constructed through the kit of parts disassembled from the post. The project critiques the current conditions in Los Angeles by locating feral objects that seamlessly escapes our eyes. The wild wide west symbolized through Los Angeles have numbed us of our surroudnings. Nunance could be found through our immediate surroundings.

ReOften, enlightenment comes well after an event. The very nature of human beings, our innate ability to remember and reflect allowed us different perspectives and understandings of the same objects and space. Architecture, therefore possesses the ability to transfigure, whether through time or culture. It will never be pinned to the wall of banality. RE- Portfolio, contains works of my past years of undergraduate career where I often look back to challenge the present. Through a series of re-doings, I find myself reflecting not just on the work, but border conventions. The last semester at USC had allowed me another chance to rethink about projects and ideas, in order to move forward and develop novel beliefs.
