PROUD TRADITIONS

Most of the people who make their home in Winnemucca have their livelihood tied to the land in one form or another.

Agricultural pursuits and mining for gold, silver and other precious minerals are what bring many families to our small city, and love of the rolling hills and deserts are what make many of them stay.

Winnemucca is located 167 miles east of Reno and 265 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho.

The city covers 9.7 square miles and has about 8,600 people. The city of Winnemucca is the seat of Humboldt County, and, since much of the county is rural, nearly half of the population lives inside the city limits.

Did you know?

• Basque Americans make up 4.2 percent of the population of Winnemucca, the highest percentage of any city in the United States.

• Winnemucca is the only town in Nevada named after a Native American

• Humboldt is the leading agricultural county in Nevada with over 100,000 acres under cultivation.

Winnemucca sits at a geographic crossroads — Interstate 80 takes travellers east and west through Winnemucca while U.S. Highway 95 brings drivers from Oregon and Idaho into the middle of town. Jungo Road takes adventurous drivers into the heart of the Black Rock Desert. Finally, a rail line with daily Amtrak service runs parallel to many of the town’s major streets.

The city is also a cultural crossroads. There is a large Basque population who speak their native language, Euskera, and practice the customs of their homeland on a daily basis. In addition, there is a large and active Hispanic population in the community.

Finally, northern Nevada is enriched by the presence of several Native American tribes, one of which, the Western Band of the Western Shoshone, has a colony within the city limits of Winnemucca.

The significance of the name ‘Winnemucca’

The City of Winnemucca was named after the famous Northern Paiute Indian Chief Old Winnemucca by one of President Lincoln’s map makers.

When Winnemucca was young, before the discovery of gold in California, several white prospectors came into the area of the Humboldt Sink from the Boise River country.

When they first saw Winnemucca, he was wearing only one moccasin and his other foot was bare. In the Paiute dialect, “mu-cha” means moccasin and the white men referred to him as “wan-na-muc-cha” — or “one moccasin.”

This name, part English and part Paiute, pleased Winnemucca, and he adopted it as his new name, being referred to thereafter as Wanne-muc-cha by his tribe.

The chief spent a lot of time in the region of the town of Winnemucca, attending “fandangoes,” ritual gatherings of several hundred people.

Chief Winnemucca and his daughter, Sarah, traveled across the country, bringing attention to the plight of their people. In 1880, they presented their case in Washington, D.C. A statue of Sarah Winnemucca is housed in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

As a spokesperson for her people, Sarah gave over 300 speeches to win support for them, and she met with President Rutherford B. Hayes and Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz in 1880. Her 1883 autobiography, “Life among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims,” was the first book written by a Native American woman.

Ranch Hand Rodeo

Held March 1 — 5, Winnemucca’s Ranch Hand Rodeo celebrates 34 years as the largest and most exciting in Nevada! Thirty-two teams compete for bragging rights and prizes in Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Stopping, Rope & Tie, Team Roping, Ranch Doctoring and Team Branding. Also on tap are the Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale, Wild Horse Racing, Stock Horse Challenge, barrel race and cowdog trials. Women’s Invitational Rodeo

Sagebrush & Alkali Dirt – That’s What Buckaroo Girls are Made Of! Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo Weekend is excited to announce the addition of a rip roarin’ women’s section to be held Friday, March 3, 2023. We are inviting some of the best buckaroo gals from across the region to compete in a one day event that will include team roping, branding, tie-down roping, and trailer loading & doctoring(combined). There will be twelve teams of 4 women. $4,000 in added money!!

The Ranch Rodeo weekend contains so much more than a rodeo!

A Ranch Rope and Performance Horse Sale is also held. The Cow Dog Trial is an exciting event that highlights the skills of cattle dogs working either in singles or a brace. Don’t miss watching these highly-trained animals as they put cattle exactly where the handler wants them!

Other events during the Ranch Rodeo Weekend include the Winnemucca barrel race, Pee Wee Events for children, Cowboy Church, a huge trade show, and of course, the Ranch Hand Rodeo performances.

Don’t miss out on a wine walk!

Once a month starting February through October

The Winnemucca Chamber of Commerce has proudly been hosting Wine walks in downtown Winnemucca for 13 years. With the participation of local businesses, the themed Wine walks have been a big hit for those 21 and older in Winnemucca.

The Wine Walks begin at the Chamber Office where each participant has their ID checked and then is given a bracelet, a wine glass and a map of each participating business.

Participating in the Wine Walks creates opportunities to check out Winnemucca on foot and visit businesses you’ve possibly never been in all while enjoying delicious drinks and snacks with good company.

Winnemucca 3D Archery Challenge

Archers from all over will be gathering at the Winnemucca Event Complex for a weekend of fun!

The event begins Friday, March 10 with a Meet & Greet from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Saturday shoot times will be selected at registration with events beginning at 8 a.m. Marked 3D animals will be set up for archers on Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday shoot times begin at 7 a.m. for those that don’t make topflight, and 10:30 a.m. for topflight.

Smoker Round: Friday from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Awards: All classes with 3 shooters will receive a buckle for the champion. Awards for 2nd and 3rd place. Cub and Peewee 1st, 2nd, 3rd place. All kids receive participation awards.

Money Class: will shoot together Saturday and Sunday for cash prizes.

The extreme athleticism of reined cow horses is on display. The dry work shows off the ability of the horse to be directed by the lightest cues of the rider to perform fast turn-arounds and dynamic stops. Followed by keeping control of a cow in the arena using only the position of the horse to send the cow through a series of maneuvers.

Run-A-Mucca rumbles into town over Memorial Day weekend

Celebrating Basque culture

The Basques are a people like no other. Their homeland is the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France, but their language and culture are unique.

More than a century ago, a handful of Basque sheep herders settled in Winnemucca and Humboldt County. Thanks to those pioneers and their descendants, the rich Basque heritage is inextricably woven into our local culture.

Winnemucca Basque restaurants serve up Basque cuisine with a combination of savory flavors, complete with a hearty infusion of garlic. Paella (a rice dish with chicken, seafood, vegetables, and spices) and chorizo (a spicy sausage) are as familiar to Winnemucca as burgers and fries.

For the true Basque dining experience, you can eat family style, sitting at a long table and sharing food and stories with other restaurant patrons.

Ranch hands from Nevada, Oregon and Idaho compete in Nevada’s longest continual-running ranch hand rodeo. Contestants compete for prize money in a number of working events. Christmas Craft Show

Crafters from all across Humboldt County come together to display a year’s worth of handmade goods in this holiday craft show that has continued on for over 40 years. The show is held at the West Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center.

Christmas Spirit

Winnemucca celebrates Christmas with several events throughout the season. The Chamber of Commerce hosts a Kickoff in mid-November, the Lion’s Club continues the pace with a Festival of Trees the weekend after Thanksgiving, and the Jolly Old Elf himself leads the Parade of Lights in mid- December. For everyone ages 2 to 92, there’s plenty of Christmas spirit to be found in Winnemucca!

The heart of Cowboy Country is Winnemucca, so it’s only to be expected that much of the year’s entertainment is dedicated to the interplay of man, horse and cow. Winnemucca does it up big, hosting some of the best rodeos in the west!

Great riding, roping and steer wrestling talent is always on hand to take on equally talented bucking livestock at the annual Tri-County Fair and Stampede.

Equine events continue throughout the year as Humboldt County hosts competitions for working cowboys, high school rodeo, barrel racers, and more big roping events than you can shake a stick at.

Ranch Hand Rodeos take the West by storm

The American cowboy has been a worldwide icon since the early 1800s and the values, traditions, heritage and cowboy code are still alive and well, even today. There are ranch cowboys still out there calving, branding, gathering and doctoring, whether full time or part time.

Northern Nevada celebrates this tradition with three huge Ranch Hand Rodeos. The first, the Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend, features not only competitive events for ranch teams, but a cowdog trials, working cowhorse competition, as well as a barrel race. The event also boasts one of the largest Western Trade Shows this area sees all year.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, the border town of McDermitt gets into the action with their own R anch Hand Rodeo.

The Western States Ranch Rodeo Association has come together to promote and preserve the heritage of the cowboy tradition through sanctioned ranch rodeo events designed for the full and part time

ranch cowboy.

The WSRRA is dedicated to providing a showcase for the full and part time cowboy to compete in WSRRA sanctioned ranch rodeo events — and all qualifying teams and individual event contestants gather to compete at the WSRRA finals in Winnemucca in early November. Winnemucca Visitors Center

Winnemucca has long been a stopover for weary travelers winding their way through the treacherous routes of the Great Basin. Today, due to its central location between San Francisco and Salt Lake City, it continues to offer a long list of lodging, dining and entertainment amenities that lure travelers off the interstate.

Venture through the antique wooden doors of the newly-improved Humboldt County Visitor Center and you will find a wealth of information about the area, and you’ll be welcomed by the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce. This group has mastered the “art of the welcome,” and the staff there is a treasuretrove of knowledge about Winnemucca and the surrounding areas.

A major display in the Visitor Center is the William Humphreys Big Game Collection. This is a collection of more than 53 big game specimens representing more than four continents.

Visitors are also treated to the Buckaroo Hall of Fame, a display of authentic buckaroo life from those who helped tame the Great Basin. Other exhibits in the Visitors Center include those representing the mining and other local industries, as well as historical representations of the Great Basin.

The Humboldt County Visitors Center is full of local history and information and should be on the “must-see” list for any traveler.

The Buckaroo Hall of Fame is located inside the Joe Mackie Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center. The display pays tribute to the cowboys who helped tame the wilds of Nevada, and includes memorabilia from several area cowpokes. Each year, a new addition is added to the fold, the display yields new insight into the lives of those who worked with cattle and horses so many decades ago.

The well-displayed array of artifacts gives visitors a glimpse into the hard life that many of these range riders faced. Worn saddles, boots and spurs attest to the many hours of labor they’ve seen, while photographs of weathered faces - proud of a life well-lived - gaze back at visitors.

The Buckaroo Hall of Fame is open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Saturday (Sundays seasonal). The exhibit is free and open to the public.

BLM Rock and Mineral Display

The rock and mineral display inside the Visitors Center showcases the many types of materials that are found in the northern Nevada desert. Each display is labeled by type, and also notes the location of discovery. Also on hand are antique bottles, and even the model of an Agustasaurus skull, found locally.

The displays at the Buckaroo Hall of Fame trace the rich history of the cowboy life in northern Nevada.

A look at our past

Ever wonder what became of old Winnemucca, the town where brave pioneers sought their fortune and weary cowboys hitched up their steeds after a day on the range?

Just above the site where thousands of wagon trains forded the Humboldt River on the long trek to California, sits the Humboldt Museum. Remains from the Ice Age of 13,000 years ago, wonderful beaded and quilled regalia from an American Indian collection, vintage automobiles, keepsakes from Winnemucca’s “art nuveau” period, and a bottling scene from the early days are among the treasures awaiting your visit.

The museum campus consists of four structures—the 1907 Former St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, wherein Humboldt Museum first opened in

1977; the 1880’s Greinstein Building, a former store/hide tannery; the 1899 Richardson-Saunders House, an Eastlake Style home once located on Railroad Street; and a modern two-story brick building containing the bulk of the museum’s collection and exhibits. Together, the buildings house the story of the community.

Inside the museum, every artifact at the museum comes with two supplements — a story, and someone who loves telling it. The staff of the museum will gladly take you back in time with an introduction to the treasures of Humboldt County’s history.

Take a trip in the desert to visit some Hot Springs

Bog Hot Springs

Way out in the northwest corner past Denio Junction at the edge of the Sheldon, Bog Hot pumps out an incredible volume of hot water—on the order of 1,000 gallons a minute—that flows a mile or so through the brush like a slow river.

Near the lower end, there’s a big, deep pool, but try getting in upstream a ways where the water is hotter and the knee-deep bottom is covered with prehistoric slime. Float on your belly and pull yourself up- or downstream with your finger tips until you find just the right temperature.

Getting there: To get to Bog, take U.S. 95 north from Winnemucca, turn west on Nevada 140 to Denio Junction, turn left, skirt the western shore of Continental Lake, and watch for

a right turn just past the end of the mountain range on your right. There’s plenty of unimproved camping.

OPAL MINES - Try your hand at opal digging! If you are incredibly lucky, you might find a large sample of this precious stone. The opal mines in Virgin Valley are open seasonally to the public, and for a small fee you can relive the days when prospectors struggled to strike it rich.

Vesco Park

Vesco Park on Mizpah Street features all kinds of fun for the family. An updated play area, covered picnic tables and the large trees make Vesco Park a welcome place for gatherings of all kinds. Vesco Park also has two tennis courts, horseshoe rings and a sandy volleyball court. Within sight of the park is the municipal pool, Little League fields, golf course, skate park and Humboldt General Hospital.

Highland Park

Highland Park, located off of Water Canyon Road is a great place to play Frisbee on the open grass or shoot some hoops on the outdoor basketball court. The park is also set up with soccer goals, picnic area and restroom facilities.

Riverview Park

A cozy park for picnics or gatherings right on the river. Riverview Park located on North Bridge Street is walking distance from downtown Winnemucca and all of its amenities.

Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park on the corner of Museum Lane and US Highway 95 North has tons of grass to run and play on. The park also features a picnic area, new playground equipment and restroom facilities.

James Kinney Urban Pond

The new James Kinney Urban Pond is located off Reinhart Road between East Second Street and US Highway 95. The pond came together through the volunteer collaboration between multiple agencies and volunteers.

The pond has been stocked with largemouth bass and bluegill and trout. Later there are plans to add channel catfish and possibly yellow perch and crappie, if available.

Individuals must follow Humboldt County fishing regulations and limits, and individuals older than 12 years of age must have an active Nevada fishing license, available for purchase at local hardware stores and online at https://nevada.licensing. kalkomey.com/.

The pond covers approximately one surface area and is 12–15 feet deep in some parts. The pond is limited to fishing only, meaning swimming, flotation devices or aquatic vehicles are prohibited. Leashed dogs are permitted at the pond however owners are responsible for picking up after their pets. Dogs are not allowed to swim or jump in the pond.

Riverview and Highland Parks are dog friendly as long as all dogs are leashed. Waste bags are available by the gates.

Cool off at the local watering holes

Splash Pad

The city’s splash pad, installed in 2018, is a crowd favorite in the hot Nevada summers. The splash pad is at the Ralph Whitworth Recreational Complex adjacent to the Boys & Girls Club of Winnemucca. The area is approximately 3,500 sq ft. of water fun that is guaranteed to keep your kids cool and entertained.

Gaming is the Nevada tradition

Gambling was first legalized in Nevada in 1931 to help reduce the impact of the Great Depression. As a point of interest, that fateful bill was introduced by a 20-something freshman Assemblyman Phil Tobin of Winnemucca. Tobin’s law spawned what is now a $13 billion-a-year tourism industry for the state of Nevada. By the 1950s, gaming was taking root in Winnemucca. Joe Mackie, who moved to Winnemucca in 1954, purchased a number of casinos and made extensive renovations to each. He then began to actively promote tourism in Winnemucca.

Casino gaming used to be unique to Nevada, but several states have now lessened their gambling laws to allow riverboat gaming and video poker; in addition, several Native American tribes have launched full-scale casinos in California, Idaho and other states. Despite the loss of the uniqueness of gaming in Nevada, it’s still a pastime enjoyed by many who live here — and of course, even more who come to visit.

• Joe Mackie built the Star Broiler Casino, arguably Winnemucca’s second real casino, in the 60’s.

• Many years ago the Model T was a Ford dealership which probably accounts for the name!

• Phil Tobin introduced a bill to legalize gambling in Nevada. A Humboldt County rancher and buckaroo, the 29-year old had no interest in gambling himself. Instead, he correctly believed legalized gambling would benefit the public and especially schools thanks to tax revenues.

Gambling and 24-hour entertainment continue to be mainstays of Winnemucca’s economy. Winnemucca currently has four major casinos, including the Winners Hotel Casino, the Winnemucca Inn & Casino, the Model T Resort and Casino and the Sundance Casino. There are many different types of gaming action to be found in Winnemucca. From simple slot machines to Blackjack, Texas Hold’em poker, craps and roulette, there’s something here for everyone!

Must see scenic places

Water Canyon Recreation Area

Managed by the local branch of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) this area offers sites for overnight camping, picnics, hiking, biking and even limited ATV use, all at no charge to visitors. The BLM has installed campfire rings, grills, trails, shelters and information kiosks all in an effort to improve one of Winnemucca’s closest recreational opportunities. Plans are even being made this year by a local environmental education group, the Nevada Outdoor School, to install an interpretive trail which will allow visitors to take a self-guided tour learning about the local flora and fauna and the canyon’s importance in local history and cultural significance to many different groups in the Winnemucca area.

Water Canyon is located southeast of Winnemucca and can be reached in a ten minute drive from the center of town. Take Hanson Street from Winnemucca Boulevard, the town’s main street. Hanson Street eventually becomes Water Canyon Road. Continue straight at the stop sign and after a mile or so of dirt road you will see the sign for Water Canyon Recreation Area.

T he Rochester mine is an open pit, heap leach silvergold operation, located in Pershing County, Nevada, approximately 26 miles northeast of Lovelock. The mine consists of the main Rochester deposit and the adjacent Nevada Packard deposit.

Rochester has been a significant contributor to the Pershing County economy and community for more than 30 years. With just over 300 employees, the mine is the largest employer in the county. In 2020, employee wages and benefits totaled over $36 million. Coeur Rochester also indirectly supports more than 650 jobs in Northern Nevada. A $334 million expansion project currently underway would increase production and continue operations through the mid-2030s.

The best place to view it all

Winnemucca Mountain

Get one of the best views in northern Nevada when you bike (or hike) to the top of Winnemucca Mountain. The Winnemucca Mountain Bike Hike Trail is accessed from Sage Heights (just off US Hwy. 95). Choose the 1 mile or 3.5 mile loops up the side of the mountain — or if you’re feeling strong take the 6 mile ride to the summit.

The top of Winnemucca Mountain sports several buildings. These are the remnants of an Air Force Base that began operation in 1951.

The road is paved all the way to the top and the mountain is an excellent place to view the valley below. The area is frequently used by stargazers and photographers.

In the fall of the year, when the setting sun elongates the shadows on the mountain, a strange shape appears. One of the shadows resembles a woman’s face in profile. Locals claim this is the face of Sarah Winnemucca, the daughter of Chief Winnemucca, for whom the town was named.

Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley is one of Nevada’s best-kept secrets, tucked between mountain ranges and surrounded by ranches. It’s a place where someone can kick up their feet, enjoy the scenery and do just about anything stress-free.

Paradise Valley is about 40 miles north of Winnemucca on U.S. Highway 95. Unlike the craziness of a big city, where everyone is hurrying to get somewhere, the town lacks noise and chaos. It’s the kind of place that can be summed up as having a fire station, a church, a post office, a park, a school and a Bar and Grill.

Most of Paradise is ranches; along State Route 290, cattle graze everywhere in large fields — and sometimes in people’s yards. Further into town, you can visit an old cemetery and old buildings that existed during the mining years.

But the real draw of Paradise is the great outdoors — and in the spring and summer, the place to take in nature’s beauty is Hinkey Summit, a popular spot for fishing and camping, which turns yellow with flowers once a year (Around mid-June); it’s definitely a beautiful sight to see.

Small streams and a large creek — Cottonwood Creek — run throughout the town and local ranches, and can be great for fishing.

Paradise Valley is a great place to get away and relax. Paradise offers multiple AirBnbs for anyone looking to stay overnight in town. Avid hunters should join the Bullhead Hunt Club for local connections in Paradise Valley.

Hunters, crafters, photographers, nature lovers or those looking for a piece of Nevada’s past will be glad they discovered this part of hidden Nevada.

Bloody Shins Trail

No matter what type of two-wheeled adventure you’re looking for, the hills and deserts around Winnemucca offer exciting terrain. Nearly every weekend during the warmer months, riders take to the trails to eat a little Nevada dust.

The “Bloody Shins Trail,” a 12-mile trail that begins right on the edge of town, is a good place to start. This rolling single track course is divided into beginner and expert grades (the last five miles range from intermediate to expert level) and offers endless views of the distant mountain ranges.

In addition to the Bloody Shins Trail, the Sonoma Mountains (the range to the East of Winnemucca) offers old pack routes, cow trails, and Jeep trails crisscrossing the sagebrush strewn flanks of the hills.

The Sonomas also excel for back country excursions, whether accessed by bicycle, motorbike, horseback or hiking. Several of the deep V-shaped canyons offer spring-fed creeks and pleasant camping experiences.

The “Bloody Shins Trail,” a single-track course located east of Winnemucca, offers beginning riders a 12-mile course. The trail is fairly easy and climbs in elevation from 4,570 feet to 4,820. Intermediate riders are invited to try their skills on the 12-mile track, a slightly more difficult course which rises 1,000 feet. Both courses are open March - November.

Winnemucca Sand Dunes

The Winnemucca sand dunes, located just a few miles north of the city, offer ATV enthusiasts, campers and folks who just like to dip their toes in the sand ample opportunities for enjoyment!

The large, drifting dunes are a favorite with area ATV riders, who love the gently rolling hills and expansive landscapes.

If you go, remember to pack plenty of water, sunscreen and maybe a jacket – sands can pack quite a sting!

The Winnemucca sand dunes are easy to find, just hit US Hwy. 95 heading north from Winnemucca. The dunes are on the left (West) side about 8 miles out of town.

Miles of tracks and roads for off road adventures

Santa Rosa Mountains

Not everyone prefers to travel within the confines of a car — and astride a horse isn’t always the best way to spend a day in the desert. Sometimes, you just gotta take the bikes or ATVs out and eat some dust.

Humboldt County has hundreds of miles of back roads that are ready for you to ride. Most motorcycle enthusiasts begin their desert trek accessing trails behind Winnemucca Mountain (the big hill west of town with the “W” on it), or by driving their trucks and trailers up Water Canyon Road and parking at one of the campgrounds there.

A second good jumping-off point for motorcycles and ATVs is Sand Pass Road, located just 11 miles north of Winnemucca on U.S. Highway 95.

This road travels almost due east into the desert, and affords some awesome views, as well as a terrific ride!

The Sonomas are excellent for back-country excursions, and are frequently accessed by riders both on motorcycle and mountain bike. Other options for riding include the Santa Rosa Mountains, above Paradise Valley; the Sand Dunes and Sand Pass Road north of Winnemucca and the Jungo area west of Winnemucca.

High Desert Fishing ponds

The Dufurrena Ponds area boasts some of the most relaxing fishing that can be had in northern Nevada. Located in northern Humboldt County, west of the town of Denio, the Dufurrena Ponds complex has bass, crappie and several other species of warm water fish to appeal to anglers and fly fishermen alike.

There are nine ponds maintained within the Dufurrena Ponds complex, but only four have enough fish to worry about — Pond 19, Pond 20, Island Pond and ponds found within the Magee Series have self-sustaining populations of fish. Most aren’t very deep — about 12 feet average. Only nonmotorized boats are allowed.

The Dufurrena Ponds and Virgin Valley Camp are accessed by driving west from the Denio cutoff on U.S. Highway 140. Follow the signs to the ponds and campground, or go a little further and fish at Big Springs Reservoir first.
