I Felt a Funeral in My Brain

La prima volta che sento Jacopo Mazzonelli al telefono, parliamo di Emily Dickinson. L’equilibrio tra presenza e vuoto nei versi della poetessa per l’artista cruciale. Allora per tutto il tempo passato a scrivere queste righe, rileggo la poesia della Dickinson “I Felt A Funeral In My Brain”.

Fino al punto in cui la struttura dei versi arriva a dettare il ritmo delle mie parole. Da adesso in poi quei versi sono presenti nelle ibre di queste righe. Come un monologo interiore che d il passo al respiro di questo testo: a tratti in sincronia, a tratti suo malgrado.

I FELT A FUNERAL IN MY BRAIN SENTIVO UN FUNERALE, NEL CERVELLO

Il titolo del nuovo lavoro di Mazzonelli “In Affectionate Memory Of”. In memoriam. Come un lentissimo all’inizio di una partitura musicale, imposta il tono del discorso. Ma la partitura stracolma di note accavallate, di segnali di cui si perso il senso. Il senso di perdita che infesta questa celebrazione affollata, o l’insistere assordante di questa marcia funebre, non in mente. Il ricordo innescato dalin atto: la ricerca di un’immagine. E non ci sono immagini univoche su questo schermo. Spettatrice, cerco di delineare un’immagine che si sovrappone continuamente su se stessa.

Il titolo di questo breve testo “I Felt A Funeral in My Brain”. Come un lentissimo all’inizio di una partitura musicale, imposta il tono del discorso. Ma la partitura appare come tabula rasa, ancora cerca il proprio senso. Il senso di perdita che infesta questa celebrazione svuotata, o il rintocco nel vuoto di questa marcia funebre, in atto: in mente. Il ricordo dissipato non dalla ricerca di un’immagine. “Sentire” un funerale un effetto f sico e mentale di scissione.

Il pensiero razionale sepolto. Sento un segnale di assenza.

AND MOURNERS TO AND FRO E I DOLENTI AVANTI E INDIETRO

Mazzonelli mi parla entusiasta di R. Murray Schafer e del suo libro “Il paesaggio sonoro”. Riprendo in mano quel libro, alla ricerca di una frase che dia il via alle mie parole. Trovo a pagina 67

dell’edizione italiana: “C’ interferenza su tutti i canali e anche i suoni pi ordinari per essere uditi devono venire ampli icati”. Penso allora a questo schermo, che pullula di puntini impazziti come a un eccesso d’interferenza “su tutti i canali”, al sovraccarico di segnali. Traccio percorsi e traiettorie al loro interno, ci giro attorno. Li ampli ico, to and fro, avanti e indietro.

Mazzonelli mi parla entusiasta di R. Murray Schafer e del suo libro “Il paesaggio sonoro”. Riprendo in mano quel libro, alla ricerca di una frase che dia il via alle mie parole. Trovo a pagina 25 dell’edizione italiana: “Ogni ricerca sul suono deve concludersi con il silenzio”. Penso allora a questo schermo annullato da punti impazziti come a una pausa prolungata fra una trasmissione e l’altra. Come allo spazio in cui il sovraccarico d’informazione trasborda in silenzio e si apre a un altro tipo di trasmissione: Paul Val ry la chiamava “esitazione prolungata fra signif cato e suono”. Mazzonelli parla del “Poema sinfonico per 100 metronomi” (1962) di Gy rgy Ligeti. “Proprio perch non posso de inirlo o potrei passare tutta la vita a cercare di farlo, questo lavoro contiene in s tutto quello che nel mio piccolo cerco di dire, di fare”. Cento metronomi coesistono in uno spazio senza ragione n senso se non quello della struttura che li dispone. Come le centinaia di puntini che pullulano su questo schermo. O come il gruppo di persone che guarda questo schermo. Inizio a chiedermi se un’analogia con i metronomi sia applicabile a noi spettatori, e non ai puntini. Chi a guardare, chi ad essere guardato? Lo schermo ci sovrasta, il cannone catodico ci bombarda di luce; noi di fronte, a indovinare un paesaggio, un’atmosfera di segnali labili. Treading, treading.

“Una poesia dura il tempo di un respiro ma poi si prolunga”, scrive Mazzonelli. Davanti a questo schermo mi trovo a trattenere il respiro f no all’attimo in cui non ho pi f ato e quasi mi sento mancare. Il tempo comunque continua a passare abbracciando un paesaggio, un’atmosfera carica di segnali. Treading, treading.

THAT SENSE WAS BREAKING THROUGH. CHE IL SENSO FOSSE FRANTUMATO

L’anno precedente al “Poema sinfonico”, Ligeti aveva composto un lavoro intitolato “Atmosph res”. rivolta alla texture del suono, L’attenzione alla massa sonora. Il pezzo si apre con un imponente cluster, formato da ogni nota della scala cromatica attraverso cinque ottave, suonata dai diversi strumenti dell’orchestra.

Ora penso all’effetto di questo schermo come a un enorme cluster che muta la propria texture conservando la propria forma, senza strappi. Per Mazzonelli la fascia di suoni che infesta questo schermo non ha risoluzione o evoluzione. La “micropolifonia” che ne muove la massa un cenno ai decadimenti che esistono in ci che percepito come unitario, e che per animato da uscite e abbandoni, da perdite e rinascite.

C’ tanta attesa nei lavori di Mazzonelli. Mi lascia il tempo di pensare alla forma di questo schermo, alle forme di questi suoni. Qual il battito di questo suono?

Qual il battito di questo suono? Risuona in un vuoto inf nito, in una pausa inf nita: segnale di morte. Del resto bisogna sentire tutta la massa del vuoto per creare. Penso allo sguardo di Orfeo, con tutto l’Inferno addosso per dare di nuovo forma al suo canto.

Gli studi neurologici associati alla perdita di un arto nel corpo umano dimostrano che per un certo periodo di tempo il corpo continua a muoversi come se quell’arto esistesse ancora, ripetendo in maniera ossessiva gesti un tempo consueti. “La ripetizione del gesto diventa sempre pi priva di senso e quindi sempre pi estenuante. Il ricordo neurologico, continuamente frustrato dalla perdita di ogni rassicurazione esteriore, crea un tipico pattern ciclico, con un’insistenza che s’intensif ca.

Immagini e suoni per appaiono come interferenze, segnali confusi. Aprire gli occhi e tendere le orecchie non corrispondono pi a nulla. O a troppo. La ripetizione del gesto diventa sempre pi priva di senso e quindi sempre pi estenuante. L’insistenza della ripetizione s’intensif ca. Beating, beating.

Mazzonelli parla di “volume muto dell’opera”.

Penso alla parola “volume” come indicatrice di un segnale audio. Il volume muto. Mi soffermo sul momento di editing del pensiero e sulla proiezione muta che la percezione audio mette in atto sulla memoria. Poi penso al senso dell’attesa prolungato su questo schermo. Potrei scegliere di non ascoltarlo. Eppure creo un percorso d’ascolto al suo interno, f nch non raggiungo punti di tensione, innescando intuizioni attorno e attraverso.

Mazzonelli parla di “volume muto dell’opera”. Penso alla parola “volume” come segnale di una presenza plastica. Il volume di questo oggetto non mi parla. Appartiene a un’altra epoca, in disuso. Eppure sono qui a f ssarlo. Potrei scegliere di non guardarlo. Eppure creo un percorso di visioni al suo interno, f nch non raggiungo punti di tensione, innescando intuizioni attorno e attraverso.

THEN SPACE BEGAN TO TOLL AS ALL THE HEAVENS WERE A BELL, AND BEING BUT AN EAR, POI LO SPAZIO - INIZIO A RINTOCCARE, COME SE TUTTI I CIELI FOSSERO UNA CAMPANA, E L’ESISTENZA, SOLO UN ORECCHIO,

Mentre opera sugli oggetti e sulla materia, Mazzonelli ne immagina gi il decadimento. Sposta in avanti lo sguardo f no al punto di dissoluzione, tende le braccia f no al punto di dissolvenza. Poi torna indietro e racconta la storia di ogni dis-

solvenza, di ogni dissoluzione. Cos tutto ci familiare, appare necessariamente diverso.

Diverso sempre in questo continuum lo spazio della mancanza. Davanti a questo schermo, sguardo e ascolto sono connaturati l’uno all’altro, sono la stessa cosa. Mazzonelli mi scrive: “Quest’opera signif ca tutto e niente. La sua analisi pu essere declinata in ogni direzione: la f ne di una tecnologia, un’informazione che diventa rumore, il male che vediamo e che sentiamo, un gioco sulla scala degli oggetti, soprattutto un’immagine forte che ho avuto in agosto mentre ero disteso sul mio terrazzo, e immaginavo un oggetto vivo (la mia ossessione), che mi dominasse, anche per le dimensioni.”

“Io e il silenzio”. C’ un lavoro di Mazzonelli che s’intitola “(I Play) Lonely Everyday”. E se l’io che appare nel titolo fosse quello dello spazio, non quello dell’artista? In passato Mazzonelli ha parlato di esclusione di ogni presenza umana nei suoi lavori. Penso al silenzio assordante di uno spazio privo di misura. E alle parole di Susan Sontag: “Il silenzio una profezia. Le azioni dell’artista possono essere intese come tentativi di avverare e di ribaltare tale profezia”. C’ vertigine nell’io di questo tacere?

Io e il silenzio. C’ una poesia di Alfred Tennyson che s’intitola “In memoriam”. Mi soffermo su questo verso: “Silence, till I be silent, too”.

“Silenzio, f n quando anch’io sar silenzioso”. Un silenzio assoluto sovrapposto a un altro silenzio, personale. C’ vertigine nell’io di questo tacere.

I Felt a Funeral in My Brain

The irst time I spoke with Jacopo Mazzonelli on the phone, we talked about Emily Dickinson. The balance between the presence and the vacuity in the poet’s lines is crucial for the artist. So, throughout the time I have spent writing these lines, I have been rereading “I Felt A Funeral In My Brain” by Emily Dickinson, up to the point when the structure of her lines extended to suggest the rhythm of my words. From now on, those verses will be present in the fabric of these lines. Like an interior monologue which sets the pace for the breadth of this text: at times in synchrony, at times despite itself.

I FELT A FUNERAL IN MY BRAIN The title of the new work by Mazzonelli is “In Affectionate Memory Of”. Like a lentissimo at the beginning of a score, it structures the tone of this text. But the score is packed with overlapped notes, signals whose sense has been lost. The sense of loss which overruns this crowded celebration, or this insistent, deafening funeral march, is not taking place: it is in the mind. The memory is generated by the search for an image.

And there are no univocal images on this screen.

As a spectator, I try to sketch out an image which continuously overlaps onto itself.

The title of this short text is “I Felt A Funeral in My Brain”. Like a lentissimo at the beginning of a score, it structures the tone of this text.

But the score seems like a tabula rasa, still in search of its own sense. The sense of loss which invades this emptied celebration, or the toll in the space of this funeral march, is not taking place: it is in the mind. The memory is removed by the search for an image. “To feel” a funeral is a physical and mental effect of splitting. The rational thinking is buried. I feel a signal of absence.

And there are no univocal images on this screen.

As a spectator, I try to sketch out an image which continuously overlaps onto itself.

The title of this short text is “I Felt A Funeral in My Brain”. Like a lentissimo at the beginning of a score, it structures the tone of this text.

But the score seems like a tabula rasa, still in search of its own sense. The sense of loss which invades this emptied celebration, or the toll in the space of this funeral march, is not taking place: it is in the mind. The memory is removed by the search for an image. “To feel” a funeral is a physical and mental effect of splitting. The rational thinking is buried. I feel a signal of absence.

AND MOURNERS TO AND FRO Mazzonelli talked to me enthusiastically about R. Murray Schafer and his book “The Tuning of The World”. I return to that book, searching for a sentence that could get my words started. “There is interference on all the channels and the most ordinary sounds must be ampli ied in order to be

heard”. And I think about this screen teeming with crazy dots as an excess of interference “on all the channels”, an overload of signals. I trace out routes and paths inside them, moving around them.

I amplify them, to and fro.

Mazzonelli talked to me enthusiastically about R. Murray Schafer and his book “The Tuning of The World”. I return to that book, searching for a sentence that could get my words started. “Every research on sound must close with silence”. And I think about this screen annihilated by crazy dots as an extended pause between two transmissions: Paul Val ry called it “prolonged hesitation between sense and sound”. To and fro resounds. It is the space of poetry.

KEPT TREADING, TREADING, TILL IT SEEMED Mazzonelli has spoken of the “Po me Symphonique For 100 Metronomes” (1962) by Gy rgy Ligeti.

“Just because I cannot de ine it, otherwise I could spend my whole life trying to do it, this work contains everything I try to say, to do”.

One hundred metronomes coexist in a space without reason or sense, except for the structure which arranges them. Like the hundreds of dots teeming this screen. Or like the group of people who watch this screen. I start wondering if an analogy with the metronomes can be applied to the audience, not to the dots. Who is looking? And who is looked at? The screen towers over, the cathode-ray gun bombards us with light; we are in front of it, trying to guess a landscape, an atmosphere of faint signals. Treading, treading.

THAT SENSE WAS BREAKING THROUGH. The year before the “Po me Symphonique”, Ligeti had composed “Atmosph res”. The attention is turned on the texture of the sound, on the sound mass. The piece opens with an impressive cluster, made up of every note of the chromatic scale through ive octaves, played by the different instruments of the orchestra.

Now I think about the effect of this screen as a huge cluster which changes its own texture

maintaining its shape, without splits. For Mazzonelli the sounds’ range which invades the screen does not have any resolution or evolution.

The “micropolyphony” which moves its mass is a nod to the decay processes that exist in what is considered united but, instead, is livened up by exits and abandons, losses and regenerations.

AND WHEN THEY ALL WERE SEATED, A SERVICE LIKE A DRUM There is a lot of waiting in Mazzoneli’s works.

“The iteration becomes more purposeless and thus more grueling. Neurological memory, continually frustrated by the lack of exterior reassurance, creates a “signature pattern” that cycles, with intensifying insistence. The brain, if you will, shrieks and beats the ground, tears its clothes ad pours ashes on its head, but does not sever its attachments”.

I think about the old TV screen and the cathoderay tube as missing limbs, prostheses without a function. In front of this giant screen and this shooting light cathode-ray tube, I repeat the usual gesture of looking and listening.

I think about the deafening silence of a space unmeasured. And I think about Susan Sontag’s words as well: “Silence is a prophecy, one which the artist’s actions can be understood as attempting to ful ill and to reverse.”. Is there vertigo in the “I” of this silence?

I and silence. There is a poem by Alfred Tennyson whose title is “In memoriam”. I linger over this line: ““Silence, till I be silent, too”.

An absolute silence is overlapped with another silence, a personal one. There is vertigo in the “I” of this silence.

He moves his glance forward, up to the point of disintegration, he reaches out to the fading point. Then, he goes back and tells the story of each fading, of each disintegration. In this way, everything familiar appears necessarily different.

The space of loss is always different in this continuum. In front of this screen, to look and to listen coexist, they are the same thing.

Mazzonelli writes: “This work means everything and nothing at all. Its analysis can be declined in every direction: it is the end of a technology, an information which becomes noise, the evil that we see and feel, a game of objects, and it is, above all, a strong image that I saw last August while I was lying in my terrace, imagining a living object (my obsession) that dominates me, with its size as well.”
