Il rinnovato cammino artistico intrapreso dalla Fondazione Galleria Civica ha significativi punti di contatto con i progetti che la Provincia autonoma di Trento ha messo in campo in questi anni nell’ambito delle Politiche Giovanili. Non lo si ripeterà mai abbastanza: sono i giovani i protagonisti decisivi della nostra autonomia! Autonomia non è quella cosa che sta dentro i palazzi della politica, non è istituzione fossilizzata, non è localismo. La sfida, oggi, è trasmettere l’idea di glocal, il globale più il locale, o meglio ancora di lobal, perchè vogliamo partire dal locale per arrivare al globale. I ragazzi abitano territori – intesi come spazi e tempi – spesso sconosciuti agli adulti e per questo dobbiamo offrire loro la percezione che la nostra autonomia speciale è un grande antidoto alla solitudine, è un sogno collettivo, il luogo della creatività e della costruzione del futuro.

Per questo è caloroso e convinto il sostegno a Opera Civica (TN), progetto con cui la Fondazione Galleria Civica vuole affidare un’attenzione particolare alla realtà emergente dell’arte contemporanea trentina. Lo vuol fare per individuare, rafforzare e sostenere nel territorio le nuove professionalità legate a un settore in continuo sviluppo. Lo vuol fare per individuare e valorizzare il panorama culturale della contemporaneità, per fornire il supporto di nuovi linguaggi e di sensibilità creative al tema cardine dell’autonomia trentina.

Questo catalogo monografico, il primo di una serie di sei dedicati a giovani artisti under 35, è un significativo esempio di questo nuovo cammino. La novità è importante. Sei giovani artisti – il primo è Jacopo Mazzonelli – potranno infatti realizzare ed esporre il loro progetto artistico, a sua volta poi destinato al catalogo monografico. È questo percorso di fiducia e responsabilità la cifra dell’iniziativa della Fondazione Galleria Civica. L’essersi messi in ascolto, scandagliando il panorama culturale giovanile della nostra terra, per restituire visibilità, spazio, opportunità. Perché anche il linguaggio del contemporaneo ci può e ci deve aiutare nell’affrontare l’omologazione strisciante, nel ribadire la forza della nostra storia, sapendo al contempo guardare avanti, là dove innovazione, arte, formazione, economia, ricerca, saperi possono incontrarsi.

The updated artistic programming of the Fondazione Galleria Civica has significant points of contact with the projects implemented in recent years by the Autonomous Province of Trento, as part of the Youth Policy. It cannot be stated often enough: young people are the decisive protagonists in our independence! Autonomy does not exist only within the political establishments, nor is it fossilized, or a form of localism. The challenge today is to convey the “glocal” idea, more global than local, or rather, “lobal,” because we want to leave the idea of local and arrive at global. Youth inhabits territories – understood as space and time – that are often foreign to adults, and we must offer them the perception that our special autonomy is a great antidote to loneliness, a collective dream, a place for creativity and building the future.

For this reason, there is warm and committed support for Opera Civica (TN), a project with which the Fondazione Galleria Civica wishes to give special attention to the emerging reality of contemporary art in Trento. Its aim is to identify, strengthen and support our area’s new professions that are linked to a continually growing field. The aim is to identify and enhance the cultural landscape of contemporary art, to provide support for the new idioms and creative sensibilities that lie at the heart of Trento’s autonomy.

This monographic catalogue, the first in a series of six dedicated to young artists under 35, is a significant example of this new direction, and new directions are important. Six young artists – the first is Jacopo Mazzonelli – will have the opportunity to create and exhibit their works, which will in turn be documented in a monographic catalogue. This direction involving trust and responsibility is at the centre of Fondazione Galleria Civica’s initiative. Sounding out, probing, plumbing the depths of the cultural terrain of youth in our area, is a way to restore visibility, space and opportunity. Because even the idiom of contemporary art can and must help us in dealing with underlying approval, reaffirming the strength of our history, knowing at the same time how to look ahead to where innovation, art, education, business, research, and knowledge all find a meeting point.

La Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento riserva, con il programma Opera Civica (TN), un’attenzione particolare alla realtà dell’arte contemporanea emergente trentina, allo scopo di individuare, rafforzare e sostenere sul territorio le nuove professionalità legate al settore culturale, in costante sviluppo. Mirando a offrire un supporto attivo e integrato alla produzione di nuovi progetti, avvicinando fra loro artisti e pubblico, apportando, attraverso ampie collaborazioni, un contributo sia alla valorizzazione della creatività giovanile sul territorio del Trentino sia del territorio stesso, Opera Civica (TN) si propone di rilanciare il concetto e la funzione stessa di una “Galleria Civica”, di elaborare e collegare fra loro le pratiche artistiche, la formazione, l’innovazione e la ricerca umanistica e scientifica, al networking.

Opera Civica (TN) si propone di facilitare la produzione e l’esposizione di opere d’arte di giovani artisti trentini, e la redazione di un primo catalogo monografico, destinandoli alla fruizione pubblica e alla collettività, e fungendo quindi da piattaforma istituzionale responsabile

della crescita e affermazione non solo di singole individualità ma di tutta una scena artistica.

Alcuni progetti editoriali – la prima monografia retrospettiva, strumento essenziale all’analisi di una pratica artistica – sono poi riservati ad artisti mid-career, la cui pratica ha particolarmente influenzato le generazioni più giovani, contribuendo a riplasmare la scena e la pratica artistica di un territorio, cogliendone potenzialità e mutamenti in atto. Le opere, nella relazione dinamica con il pubblico e nel dibattito che esse innescano, ci restituiscono uno scenario in movimento, e acquistano lo status di “opere civiche”, cioè opere da un lato realizzate da artisti appartenenti alla comunità locale, in un periodo di prolungata collaborazione formativa e progettuale con un’istituzione culturale del territorio, e, dall’altro, opere riservate a un dialogo altrettanto attivo e pervasivo con la comunità locale in cui entrambi, artista e istituzione, operano e a cui si rivolgono.

Nello stesso tempo Opera Civica (TN) è anche strumento di un’inedita cooperazione fra dimensione pubblica locale e sguardo sul mondo.

Opera Civica (TN) porta l’arte contemporanea

prodotta sul territorio nel contesto multiforme, sociale e produttivo del territorio e del network dell’arte contemporanea, dando consistenza concreta alla pratica di un museo diffuso, di una galleria veramente “Civica”, che permette agli artisti di non restare chiusi nei luoghi deputati alla fruizione dell’arte (il “museo”) ma di aprirsi alla comunità, al suo sistema fluido di relazioni e interessi, alla riflessione condivisa sui temi dell’identità e i linguaggi e della contemporaneità: in ultima analisi, quindi, alla condivisione di una riflessione comune sulle idee di contemporaneità e sul ruolo della cultura oggi.

Il programma Opera Civica (TN) si apre con il primo catalogo monografico di Jacopo Mazzonelli, che presenta un’analisi puntuale della sua poliedrica ricerca artistica. L’indagine di Mazzonelli si avvale di differenti tecniche, di metodologie mutuate da linguaggi di diverse discipline, in primo luogo quello della musica, e di osservazioni provenienti da angolazioni inaspettate che permettono il superamento di una lettura frontale dell’opera, un “attraversamento” di un’opera ricca di riferimenti colti e di relazioni plurisensoriali.

3 With the program Opera Civica (TN), the Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento is devoting particular attention to emerging contemporary art in the Trentino region, with the objective of identifying, reinforcing and supporting in the territory new professional competences linked to the cultural sector, which is constantly growing.

Aiming to provide active and integrated support for the production of new projects, bringing together artists and the public and making, through wide-ranging collaborations, a contribution to the promotion of creativity among the young in the region of Trentino as well as of the territory itself, Opera Civica (TN) proposes to relaunch the concept and function of a “Civic Gallery,” fostering and connecting up artistic practices, training, innovation and humanistic and scientific research through networking.

Opera Civica (TN) aims to facilitate the production and exhibition of works of art by young artists in Trentino, and to compile a first monographic catalogue that will make them accessible to the public and the community. Thus it will act as an institutional platform responsible

for the growth and success not just of individuals but of an entire art scene. A number of publishing projects—such as the first retrospective monograph, an essential tool for the analysis of an artistic practice—will also be devoted to mid-career artists whose work has had a particular influence on the younger generations and helped to shape the artistic scene and practice of the region, reflecting its potentialities and the changes that are underway. The works, in their dynamic relationship with the public and in the debate that they trigger, show us a scenario in movement and acquire the status of “civic works,” i.e. works on the one hand produced by artists belonging to the local community, over a period of prolonged collaboration in training and planning with a regional cultural institution, and on the other works that establish an equally active and pervasive dialogue with the local community in which both, artist and institution, operate and which they address.

At the same time Opera Civica (TN) is the instrument of an unprecedented cooperation between the local public dimension and an open-

ness to the outside world. Opera Civica (TN) brings the contemporary art produced in the region into the multiform, social and productive context of the territory and the network of contemporary art, giving concrete substance to the practice of a territorial museum, a truly “civic” gallery that will allow artists to emerge from their confinement in the places appointed for art (e.g. the “museum”) and open themselves up to the community, to its fluid system of relationships and interests, to a shared reflection on the themes of identity and languages and of contemporaneity: in the last analysis, therefore, to a common deliberation on contemporary ideas and on the role of culture today.

The Opera Civica (TN) program opens with Jacopo Mazzonelli’s first monographic catalogue, which presents a detailed analysis of his multifaceted artistic research. Mazzonelli makes use of a variety of different techniques, methodologies borrowed from the languages of several disciplines, in the first place that of music, as well as observations from unexpected angles that make it possible to go beyond the frontal

view of the work and carry out an “exploration” of a creation that is filled with cultivated references and multisensory relationships.

I would like to thank the artist and the authors of the texts in the catalogue for having conceived together with Kaleidoscope Press the first volume in this ambitious project, of great significance for the Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento and for the region, as well as a new instrument of research for contemporary art.

At the same time Opera Civica (TN) is the instrument of an unprecedented cooperation between the local public dimension and an open-

ness to the outside world. Opera Civica (TN) brings the contemporary art produced in the region into the multiform, social and productive context of the territory and the network of contemporary art, giving concrete substance to the practice of a territorial museum, a truly “civic” gallery that will allow artists to emerge from their confinement in the places appointed for art (e.g. the “museum”) and open themselves up to the community, to its fluid system of relationships and interests, to a shared reflection on the themes of identity and languages and of contemporaneity: in the last analysis, therefore, to a common deliberation on contemporary ideas and on the role of culture today.

The Opera Civica (TN) program opens with Jacopo Mazzonelli’s first monographic catalogue, which presents a detailed analysis of his multifaceted artistic research. Mazzonelli makes use of a variety of different techniques, methodologies borrowed from the languages of several disciplines, in the first place that of music, as well as observations from unexpected angles that make it possible to go beyond the frontal

view of the work and carry out an “exploration” of a creation that is filled with cultivated references and multisensory relationships.

I would like to thank the artist and the authors of the texts in the catalogue for having conceived together with Kaleidoscope Press the first volume in this ambitious project, of great significance for the Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento and for the region, as well as a new instrument of research for contemporary art.

Un’opera d’arte, forma compiuta e chiusa nella sua perfezione di organismo perfettamente calibrato, è altresì aperta, possibilità di essere interpretata in mille modi diversi senza che la sua irriproducibile singolarità ne risulti alterata. Ogni fruizione è così una interpretazione ed una esecuzione, poiché in ogni fruizione l’opera rivive in una prospettiva originale1.

A quarant’anni di distanza dalla sua pubblicazione l’analisi condotta da Umberto Eco in Opera aperta appare ancora centrale, poiché mette in luce uno degli aspetti più coinvolgenti dell’essere contemporaneamente spettatori e interpreti: l’opera (risulta del tutto indifferente il fatto che si tratti di musica, arte visiva o letteratura) è il risultato di una somma di stimoli da cui partono le nostre interpretazioni. O, se volessimo prendere in prestito criteri propri della matematica, potremmo dire che l’opera è l’insieme di partenza (il dominio) di tutti quegli elementi che trovano casa nello spettatore (il codominio). La funzione – la legge cioè che permette che ogni elemento del primo insieme abbia un corrispettivo nell’insieme di arrivo – è frutto principalmente del lavoro del linguaggio e del mezzo utilizzato. La funzione inversa – quella che ci permette cioè di tornare all’insieme originario, all’opera stessa – è invece il risultato della nostra interpretazione2. In questo movimento continuo che vede lo spettatore soggetto alla frizione tra essere contemporaneamente ricevente e mittente, avviene la dinamica che apre e libera l’opera, strappandola dalla prigionia dell’ermeneutica, dai tecnicismi e da disquisizioni troppo dotte (che facilmente possono farci arenare nelle aporie del pensiero o nell’intellettualizzazione onanistica senza confini3).

A work of art, therefore, is a complete and closed form in its uniqueness as a balanced organic whole, while at the same time constituting an open product on account of its susceptibility to countless different interpretations which do not impinge on its unadulterable specificity. Hence, every reception of a work of art is both an interpretation and a performance of it, because in every reception the work takes on a fresh perspective for itself.1 Forty years after its publication, the analysis carried out by Umberto Eco in The Open Work still appears crucial, as it emphasizes one of the most intriguing aspects of our being at once spectators and interpreters: the work (it is a matter of complete indifference whether it is of music, visual art or literature) is the result of a sum of stimuli on which our interpretations are based. Or, to borrow from the theories of mathematics, we could say that the work is the set of input values (the domain) of all those elements that find their home in the spectator (the codomain). The function—the rule that permits each element of the first set to correspond with one in the target set—is principally fruit of the labor of the language and the medium used.

The inverse function—i.e. the one that allows us to go back to the original set, to the work itself—is instead the result of our interpretation.2 Out of this continual movement that sees the spectator subject to the friction of being simultaneously receiver and sender comes the dynamism which opens and liberates the work, freeing it from enslavement to hermeneutics, technicalities and overly erudite disquisitions (which can too easily get bogged down in the aporias of thought or in unbounded onanistic intellectualization3).

Una delle differenze fondamentali tra le opere aperte e quelle che non lo sono sta quindi nella possibilità o meno di creare un rapporto dialogico con chi la fruisce: più un’opera è aperta e più si presta a essere non tanto manipolata, quanto piuttosto disponibile a raccogliere le impressioni, lo stupore, il disgusto o l’apprezzamento di colui che la guarda. Il che ovviamente non indica che tutte le chiavi di lettura siano corrette o abbiano lo stesso valore, quanto il fatto che invece lo spettatore si senta parte attiva in grado di reggere una conversazione, anche se talvolta con un interlocutore straniante, imbarazzante o inaspettatamente valido. In questo senso la pluralità dei livelli interpretativi gioca un ruolo fondamentale poiché permette a chi guarda di prendersi le libertà che gli si confanno, che egli stesso di persona è in grado di misurare. È questa la chiave di lettura di molte delle opere di Jacopo Mazzonelli, artista la cui ricerca indaga quell’ampia zona di confine tra arte visiva e musica. L’approccio non è quello della sound art nell’uso comune del termine – riferita cioè a “opere che producono suono con i medesimi obiettivi delle arti plastiche, nelle quali il tempo non è una misura fondamentale, piuttosto che con quelli propri della musica”4 – quanto piuttosto quello metodologico, per derivazione costruttiva e per influenza progettuale. L’aspetto sonoro udibile, che talvolta accompagna i suoi lavori, nasce infatti da un tessuto connettivo musicale, una sorta di humus germinale (l’artista ha alla base ferrei studi di pianoforte in conservatorio), ma raramente un’opera ha per soggetto il suono, anche nelle sue potenzialità plastiche o cinetiche: ciò che è importante è infatti porre lo spettatore in una condizione attiva in cui mettere in moto i sensi o esercitare un’aspettativa.

The audible aspect of sound that sometimes accompanies his works stems in fact from a musical connective tissue, a sort of breeding ground (the artist has a solid background in piano studies at the conservatoire), but it is rare for one of his works to have sound as its subject, even in its plastic or kinetic potentialities: what is important for him is in fact to place the spectator in an active condition in which he can set the senses going or bring an expectation to bear.

Prendiamo ad esempio Camera inversa, un’installazione composta da uno specchio (la cui superficie riflettente ricorda vagamente i dischi d’acciaio di Alviani) che pare alternativamente concavo o convesso, e una sedia sulla cui seduta si muove una molla che pare collocata li casualmente. Se la visione dello specchio mette lo spettatore in una condizione esplorativa, alla ricerca di quello che c’è dietro, solo dopo si riesce a prestare attenzione al rumore discontinuo proveniente dalla sedia. Lo stupore è cioè preparato opportunamente con dei dispositivi che alimentano l’aspettativa, dinamica che accade frequentemente nella musica (o nel teatro): è una forma aggiornata della teoria degli affetti, la Affektenlehre elaborata dai teorici musicali tedeschi in età barocca che immaginava la musica come un insieme organizzato di suoni animati da intenzioni e stati d’animo5. Gli affetti – o, con un linguaggio più moderno, gli stati emotivi – sono prodotti secondo un’intenzionalità che lo spettatore, affidandosi all’artista, coglie solo in forma inconsapevole. Così Mazzonelli da un lato dà prova di conoscere il suo pubblico e dell’altro dimostra come prenderlo per mano, misurando gli effetti del proprio agire, come essenzialmente è portato a fare un musicista che si esibisce in pubblico.

Respiro (un foglio di carta collocato sul muro dal quale improvvisamente “cade” la propria immagine proiettata, come se un chiodo fosse saltato via) mette in discussione, in un gioco di rimandi, il concetto di bi- e tridimensionalità, confrontando le potenzialità scultoree di una superficie piana, come un foglio di carta, con quelle generalmente assenti di una video proiezione.

L’intersezione tra il medium carta e il video diventa quindi sostanzialmente un’opera di confine, in cui coesistono l’oggetto e la sua rappresentazione

Let us take for example Camera Inversa / Reverse Room, an installation made up of a mirror (whose reflective surface vaguely recalls Alviani’s steel disks) that appears alternatively concave or convex and a chair on whose seat moves a spring that seems to have been placed there by chance. If the sight of the mirror puts the viewer in an exploratory state, looking for what lies behind it, only afterward does he manage to pay attention to the intermittent noise coming from the chair. That is to say a sense of astonishment is prepared at the right moment with devices that feed expectation, a dynamic frequently found in music (or in the theater): it is an updated form of the doctrine of the affections, the Affektenlehre developed by German musical theorists in the baroque period which regarded music as an organized set of sounds animated by intentions and moods.5 The affections, or—in more modern language—emotional states, are produced according to an intentionality that the spectator, placing his trust in the artist, grasps only in an unconscious form.

Thus Mazzonelli on the one hand demonstrates that he knows his public and on the other shows how to take it by the hand, gauging the effects of his own action, in essentially the same way as a musician who performs in public.

Respiro / Breath (a sheet of paper hung on the wall from which its projected image suddenly “falls,” as if it had come unpinned) brings into question, in a play of allusions, the concept of two- and three-dimensionality by comparing the sculptural potentialities of a flat surface, such as a sheet of paper, with the generally absent ones of a video projection. Thus the intersection between the medium of paper and the video becomes essentially a work on the borderline, in which the object and its projected representation coexist,

proiettata, quanto meno sino al scivolamento di quest’ultima. L’evento della “caduta” (che in certi aspetti ricorda il pirandelliano strappo nel cielo di carta del teatrino di marionette6), opportunamente costruito facendo attendere l’osservatore, è così l’evento che scioglie la tensione dopo un climax costruito sull’assenza di azione. Proprio quel vuoto metafisico e il successivo accadimento hanno una perfetta trasposizione in campo musicale nel procedimento, tipicamente beethoveniano7, di far seguire un pianissimo a un lungo e intenso crescendo. E alla stessa maniera l’installazione Organico (realizzata squartando un pianoforte e mettendo in mostra le potenzialità dinamiche dello strumento dopo esser percosso vigorosamente da un martello) ha, dopo il roboante inizio con l’elemento ansiogeno del rumore reiterato, un’evoluzione misurata che permette di ricomporre il groviglio di fili lanciati sullo spettatore inconsapevole.

Lavori come Mensa (costituito da un giradischi sul cui braccio è montata una forchetta che urta un bicchiere producendo un rumore simile a quello di un urto tra stoviglie durante i pasti) o Listening (costruito dall’unione di due stetoscopi) nascono invece dalla necessità di risemantizzare gli oggetti, di dare cioè una forma e un impiego distante da quello originario, di farli vivere di vita nuova. Mazzonelli realizza dunque una variazione o una improvvisazione sul tema dato, portando in luoghi differenti – con scopi differenti – dei campioni di realtà prelevati a piacere. In questo pare così dare voce alla necessità di avere sempre una possibile differente interpretazione, libera e distante dai parametri considerati standard e accettabili dal senso comune. Anche (I Play) Lonely Every Day può essere vista appli-

And in the same way the installation Organico (Organic, realized by taking a piano to pieces and revealing the dynamic potentialities of the instrument after being struck vigorously with a hammer), after the resounding start with the anxiety-inducing element of the repeated noise, has a measured evolution that allows the tangle of threads launched at the unwitting spectator to be sorted out.

Works like Mensa (a record player whose arm has a fork mounted on it, producing a noise akin to the clashing of tableware) or Listening (created out of the union of two stethoscopes) spring instead from the need to invest objects with new meanings, i.e. to give them a form and a use distant from the original ones, to introduce them to a new life. In other words Mazzonelli produces a variation or an improvisation on the given theme, by taking to different places—with different aims—samples of reality collected at whim.

In this he seems to be giving voice to the need to always have the possibility of a different interpretation, one that is free and remote from the parameters considered standard and acceptable by common sense. (I Play) Lonely Everyday can also be seen as the application of musical methodologies, in particular in the layering of several voices—polyphony—in which

Se la visione dello specchio mette lo spettatore in una condizione esplorativa, alla ricerca di quello che c’è dietro, solo dopo si riesce a prestare attenzione al rumore discontinuo proveniente dalla sedia. Lo stupore è cioè preparato opportunamente con dei dispositivi che alimentano l’aspettativa, dinamica che accade frequentemente nella musica (o nel teatro): è una forma aggiornata della teoria degli affetti, la Affektenlehre elaborata dai teorici musicali tedeschi in età barocca che immaginava la musica come un insieme organizzato di suoni animati da intenzioni e stati d’animo5. Gli affetti – o, con un linguaggio più moderno, gli stati emotivi – sono prodotti secondo un’intenzionalità che lo spettatore, affidandosi all’artista, coglie solo in forma inconsapevole. Così Mazzonelli da un lato dà prova di conoscere il suo pubblico e dell’altro dimostra come prenderlo per mano, misurando gli effetti del proprio agire, come essenzialmente è portato a fare un musicista che si esibisce in pubblico.

Respiro (un foglio di carta collocato sul muro dal quale improvvisamente “cade” la propria immagine proiettata, come se un chiodo fosse saltato via) mette in discussione, in un gioco di rimandi, il concetto di bi- e tridimensionalità, confrontando le potenzialità scultoree di una superficie piana, come un foglio di carta, con quelle generalmente assenti di una video proiezione.

L’intersezione tra il medium carta e il video diventa quindi sostanzialmente un’opera di confine, in cui coesistono l’oggetto e la sua rappresentazione

Let us take for example Camera Inversa / Reverse Room, an installation made up of a mirror (whose reflective surface vaguely recalls Alviani’s steel disks) that appears alternatively concave or convex and a chair on whose seat moves a spring that seems to have been placed there by chance. If the sight of the mirror puts the viewer in an exploratory state, looking for what lies behind it, only afterward does he manage to pay attention to the intermittent noise coming from the chair. That is to say a sense of astonishment is prepared at the right moment with devices that feed expectation, a dynamic frequently found in music (or in the theater): it is an updated form of the doctrine of the affections, the Affektenlehre developed by German musical theorists in the baroque period which regarded music as an organized set of sounds animated by intentions and moods.5 The affections, or—in more modern language—emotional states, are produced according to an intentionality that the spectator, placing his trust in the artist, grasps only in an unconscious form.

Thus Mazzonelli on the one hand demonstrates that he knows his public and on the other shows how to take it by the hand, gauging the effects of his own action, in essentially the same way as a musician who performs in public.

Respiro / Breath (a sheet of paper hung on the wall from which its projected image suddenly “falls,” as if it had come unpinned) brings into question, in a play of allusions, the concept of two- and three-dimensionality by comparing the sculptural potentialities of a flat surface, such as a sheet of paper, with the generally absent ones of a video projection. Thus the intersection between the medium of paper and the video becomes essentially a work on the borderline, in which the object and its projected representation coexist,

proiettata, quanto meno sino al scivolamento di quest’ultima. L’evento della “caduta” (che in certi aspetti ricorda il pirandelliano strappo nel cielo di carta del teatrino di marionette6), opportunamente costruito facendo attendere l’osservatore, è così l’evento che scioglie la tensione dopo un climax costruito sull’assenza di azione. Proprio quel vuoto metafisico e il successivo accadimento hanno una perfetta trasposizione in campo musicale nel procedimento, tipicamente beethoveniano7, di far seguire un pianissimo a un lungo e intenso crescendo. E alla stessa maniera l’installazione Organico (realizzata squartando un pianoforte e mettendo in mostra le potenzialità dinamiche dello strumento dopo esser percosso vigorosamente da un martello) ha, dopo il roboante inizio con l’elemento ansiogeno del rumore reiterato, un’evoluzione misurata che permette di ricomporre il groviglio di fili lanciati sullo spettatore inconsapevole.

Lavori come Mensa (costituito da un giradischi sul cui braccio è montata una forchetta che urta un bicchiere producendo un rumore simile a quello di un urto tra stoviglie durante i pasti) o Listening (costruito dall’unione di due stetoscopi) nascono invece dalla necessità di risemantizzare gli oggetti, di dare cioè una forma e un impiego distante da quello originario, di farli vivere di vita nuova. Mazzonelli realizza dunque una variazione o una improvvisazione sul tema dato, portando in luoghi differenti – con scopi differenti – dei campioni di realtà prelevati a piacere. In questo pare così dare voce alla necessità di avere sempre una possibile differente interpretazione, libera e distante dai parametri considerati standard e accettabili dal senso comune. Works like Mensa (a record player whose arm has a fork mounted on it, producing a noise akin to the clashing of tableware) or Listening (created out of the union of two stethoscopes) spring instead from the need to invest objects with new meanings, i.e. to give them a form and a use distant from the original ones, to introduce them to a new life. In other words Mazzonelli produces a variation or an improvisation on the given theme, by taking to different places—with different aims—samples of reality collected at whim.

In this he seems to be giving voice to the need to always have the possibility of a different interpretation, one that is free and remote from the parameters considered standard and acceptable by common sense. (I Play) Lonely Everyday can also be seen as the application of musical methodologies, in particular in the layering of several voices—polyphony—in which

The installation is created out of parquet blocks assembled to make a floor; underneath it are set loudspeakers from which the sharp noise of the bounce of a tennis ball can be heard, alternatively from the right and left. The floor is divided by a window, fixed on the wall, which provides a sense of scale and acts a bit like an anomalous element that disrupts vision. The observer sees, listens, and is involuntarily driven to move along the line traced by the parquet in order to perceive the spatiality of the sound, but also to inadvertently interact with the stratifications with which he is faced; and at that point, all that he can do is identify himself existentially—shunning complications of interpretation—with the person (the artist) who, every day, plays by himself. The frame of mind, at times, is simply a question of shifts in position.

How many kilometers do you cover a day?

I’ve never tried to calculate the number of steps I take in my studio every day. But it must be really a lot. I have a slender but, as they say, sinewy build. Probably what made me give up playing the piano professionally was the fact that sitting at the piano for too many hours made me tense. It’s like the difference between reading a novel or an essay divided into specific chapters. I don’t read novels, only poetry and essays. Because, walking a lot, you often lose your place, and with a novel it’s more difficult to pick up the thread of the story again. A poem lasts as long as a breath, but you go on breathing afterward too, while walking, out of necessity.

un suono secco, scandito metricamente a sezioni alterne. Dietro campeggia una finestra bianca, che divide lo spazio, virtualmente. Niente vetro, solo luce e suono. L’esclusione della presenza umana è praticamente sempre necessaria nel mio lavoro. Mi intrigano le ombre delle persone, e mi tocca l’eco di un suono. Quando ascoltiamo musica o quant’altro provenga da un’altra stanza della casa, il suono muta. Le basse frequenze attraversano i muri, l’effetto stereofonico diventa monofonico, simile a una radiolina, le alte frequenze decadono. Se ascoltiamo un pianoforte, sembra che il suono provenga da una pozza profonda d’acqua. Questo è interessante. L’angolazione, intendo, come metodo di studio.

armonia, sincope, eco, pausa e silenzio, termini specifici che rientrano comunemente nel linguaggio della musica come dell’architettura, della danza, del cinema e della poesia. Non importa stabilire connessioni precise o ordinarne le minute differenze per accorgersi che, al contrario, occorre ricercare invece una vibrazione, un motore in grado di innescare sottili meccanismi che traghettino lo spettatore dal tattile all’uditivo, dal retinico al poetico e ritorno.

Per me una mostra, come ogni opera, è e deve essere un percorso.

Quando camminiamo, sia che ci troviamo in un bosco, in una città o semplicemente nella nostra stanza, compiamo un percorso. Mi piace pensare che anche l’opera lo sia.

A proposito dei tuoi ultimi lavori hai parlato di una tensione al disvelamento dell’immagine e del suono, di ombra visiva e ombra sonora. Sembra quasi che progressivamente tu abbia fatto a meno di riferimenti specifici alla musica e ad alcuni concetti teorizzati da grandi musicisti e compositori, per giungere a una sintesi tra l’elemento visivo e quello sonoro.

I’m intrigued by people’s shadows, and I’m touched by the echo of a sound.

When we listen to music or something else coming from another room in the house, the sound changes. The low frequencies pass through the walls, the stereophonic effect becomes monophonic, like a transistor radio, and the high frequencies die out. If we listen to a piano, the sound seems to come from a deep well filled with water. This is interesting. Angle, I mean, as a method of study.

With regard to your most recent works you’ve spoken of an aspiration to unveil the image and the sound, of visual shadow and aural shadow. It seems as if you have been progressively making less specific references to music and to some of the concepts theorized by great musicians and composers in order to arrive at a synthesis between the visual and the aural element.

syncopation, echo, pause and silence, specific terms that are commonly used in the language of music as well as in that of architecture, dance, the cinema and poetry. You don’t have to establish precise connections or sort out the subtle differences through attempts at pseudo-scientific explanations in order to realize that, on the contrary, it is necessary to look instead for a vibration, a motor capable of triggering subtle mechanisms that lead the spectator from the tactile to the auditory, from the visual to the poetic and back again.

For me an exhibition, like every work, is and should be a journey. When we walk, whether it’s in a wood, a city or simply in our bedroom, we are making a journey. I like to think that the work is one too.

Rather than a pure synthesis between visual and aural elements, something that I tried out in my first video artworks, I prefer today to take a more abstract, conceptual approach, in which the terms of the specific language of the different disciplines are handled in different ways, often generating conflicts and tensions, and thus giving rise to new levels of interpretation, in a territory deliberately allocated to intuition, or even to error as the operational rule of artistic research. Sometimes it seems as if there is, in your works, an attempt to disrupt, with an increase in entropy, what in Western music follows certain patterns. In your works, the relationship between noise and sound is overcome in favor of the sound material; the visual element lends itself to a ?“contemplative tranquility”? (to borrow John Cage’s term), or again to an idea of indeterminacy which makes the work seem unfinished, in suspense and open to multiple interpretations. The space becomes a genuine dimension of composition. What is the point of tension, of conflict or contact, between material and sound?

10 sound, its tempo marked in alternating sections. Behind is set a blank window, which divides the space virtually. No glass, just light and sound. The exclusion of human presence is practically always necessary in my work.

I’m intrigued by people’s shadows, and I’m touched by the echo of a sound.

When we listen to music or something else coming from another room in the house, the sound changes. The low frequencies pass through the walls, the stereophonic effect becomes monophonic, like a transistor radio, and the high frequencies die out. If we listen to a piano, the sound seems to come from a deep well filled with water. This is interesting. Angle, I mean, as a method of study.

With regard to your most recent works you’ve spoken of an aspiration to unveil the image and the sound, of visual shadow and aural shadow. It seems as if you have been progressively making less specific references to music and to some of the concepts theorized by great musicians and composers in order to arrive at a synthesis between the visual and the aural element.

syncopation, echo, pause and silence, specific terms that are commonly used in the language of music as well as in that of architecture, dance, the cinema and poetry. You don’t have to establish precise connections or sort out the subtle differences through attempts at pseudo-scientific explanations in order to realize that, on the contrary, it is necessary to look instead for a vibration, a motor capable of triggering subtle mechanisms that lead the spectator from the tactile to the auditory, from the visual to the poetic and back again.

For me an exhibition, like every work, is and should be a journey. When we walk, whether it’s in a wood, a city or simply in our bedroom, we are making a journey. I like to think that the work is one too.

Rather than a pure synthesis between visual and aural elements, something that I tried out in my first video artworks, I prefer today to take a more abstract, conceptual approach, in which the terms of the specific language of the different disciplines are handled in different ways, often generating conflicts and tensions, and thus giving rise to new levels of interpretation, in a territory deliberately allocated to intuition, or even to error as the operational rule of artistic research. Sometimes it seems as if there is, in your works, an attempt to disrupt, with an increase in entropy, what in Western music follows certain patterns. In your works, the relationship between noise and sound is overcome in favor of the sound material; the visual element lends itself to a ?“contemplative tranquility”? (to borrow John Cage’s term), or again to an idea of indeterminacy which makes the work seem unfinished, in suspense and open to multiple interpretations. The space becomes a genuine dimension of composition. What is the point of tension, of conflict or contact, between material and sound?

I mean by this that music for me is not just a matter of music, sound or acoustics. On the contrary it’s an endless expanse of references, memories and subjective and collective experiences. A tuning fork is the only object small enough to hold in your hand that tells you that the note A has exactly that pitch all over the world, and a metronome is the zero degree of language, like an alphabet. If we were to take the score of György Ligeti’s Volumina for organ, or John Cage’s 4’33’’, and exhibit them in Basel next year, it is likely that a collector would buy them, mistaking them for works of art. These “errors,” these “paradoxes” allow, require artists to go on working.

Opera d’arte totale? Cos’è il Poème symphonique pour 100 métronomes? Proprio perché non posso definirlo o potrei passare tutta la vita a cercare di farlo, questo lavoro contiene in sé tutto quello che nel mio piccolo cerco di dire, di fare.

Un oggetto antico ma riprodotto allo stesso modo ancora oggi, un oggetto che segna il tempo operando nel tempo ed estinguendo lentamente la sua carica, un oggetto che è ritmo sonoro ma anche ritmo visivo (il pendolo si muove), un oggetto che distilla ticchettii regolari (ma mai regolarissimi) che posto vicino agli altri novantanove crea un nuovo oggetto sonoro indipendente, autonomo, simile a uno sciame d’api piuttosto che a una violenta grandinata, e che estinguendosi si apre a nuove suggestioni.

Quando mi domandi della mia passione per il collezionare oggetti, non posso che risponderti che trovo in essi una quantità di messaggi che paragono al numero di parole che ogni giorno ci scambiamo. Risposta: l’Universo e il Tempo. Il mito dell’alchimia e un orologio al polso.

Credo che molti altri artisti – ma è un discorso che difficilmente riesco a condurre senza inciampare – parlino del tempo pur non facendolo direttamente, intenzionalmente. Per me la dimensione del tempo, nell’arte, corrisponde all’emozione. Il tempo è percezione. L’opera d’arte che funziona annulla per un istante l’incedere. Un minuto dura sessantuno secondi. Penso soprattutto ai lavori di Gino De Dominicis, Robert Gober, di Rebecca Horn, di Pier Paolo Calzolari, solo per citarne alcuni.

Ma, per venire meglio alla tua domanda, oltre che tentare di fissare questa idea di sospensione attraverso un gioco complesso di relazioni a volte plurisensoriali, agisco anche direttamente nella ricerca del momento determinante. 14 György Ligeti’s Poème symphonique pour 100 métronomes is perhaps the work that has most fascinated me since my adolescence. Performance?

Concert? Contemporary music? Aleatoric music? Musique concrète? Work of total art? What is the Symphonic Poem for 100 Metronomes? Precisely because I can’t define it or I could spend my whole life trying to do so, this work contains within it everything that in my own small way I am trying to say, to do.

An ancient object but one that is still made in the same way today, an object that beats time by operating in time and slowly winding down; an object that is a rhythm of sound but also a visual rhythm (the pendulum moves); an object that produces regular (but never completely regular) ticks that when placed next to another ninety-nine creates a new and independent, autonomous sound object, resembling a swarm of bees or a violent hailstorm, and that opens itself up to new suggestions as it winds down.

When you ask me about my passion for collecting objects, all I can tell you is that I find in a series of selected objects a quantity of messages that I can compare to the number of words that we exchange every day. My objects sit on the shelves of my studio. The impulse to acquire is (and I want it to go on being) primordial. Then, every so often, when required, they come out of the shadows and are made part of the work. But some of them may remain there (even noisily) forever.

Orologio (1970) and Senza titolo (1972). The first consists of a clock without hands whose dial was replaced by the artist with a mirror, so that time is told by the aging of one’s face. The second is a photography portraying the artist in a three-quarter profile, in the foreground of a natural landscape, while looking at the same time at a clock and his picture as a kid. What exactly is the connection between your work and its perception in relation to the factor of time?

I’m not a believer and I still haven’t understood whether I’m an atheist. I’ll worry about it later. What do I have left to make a connection with the unfathomable? The Universe and Time. The myth of alchemy and a wristwatch. I think that many other artists–but this is an argument that I find it hard to make without tripping up–speak of time although without doing it directly, intentionally. For me the dimension of time, in art, corresponds to emotion. Time is perception. The work of art that does its job cancels its advance for a moment. A minute lasts sixty-one seconds. I’m especially thinking of the works of Gino De Dominicis, Robert Gober, Rebecca Horn and Pier Paolo Calzolari, to mention just a few.

But, to answer your question better, as well as trying to fix this idea of suspension through a complex play of relationships that are at times multisensory, I act directly by searching for the decisive moment. In Prima che sia troppo tardi (Before It’s Too Late), I isolate a single frame, in other words a minimal particle taken out of a visual sequence, from Ingmar Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal. I develop this frame as a photograph and imprison it J.M.

Precisely because I can’t define it or I could spend my whole life trying to do so, this work contains within it everything that in my own small way I am trying to say, to do.

An ancient object but one that is still made in the same way today, an object that beats time by operating in time and slowly winding down; an object that is a rhythm of sound but also a visual rhythm (the pendulum moves); an object that produces regular (but never completely regular) ticks that when placed next to another ninety-nine creates a new and independent, autonomous sound object, resembling a swarm of bees or a violent hailstorm, and that opens itself up to new suggestions as it winds down.

When you ask me about my passion for collecting objects, all I can tell you is that I find in a series of selected objects a quantity of messages that I can compare to the number of words that we exchange every day. My objects sit on the shelves of my studio. The impulse to acquire is (and I want it to go on being) primordial. Then, every so often, when required, they come out of the shadows and are made part of the work. But some of them may remain there (even noisily) forever.

The works Box, Chair, Mirror and Emily Dickinson, both from 2010, contain two interesting elements—a deforming mirror and a clock that doesn’t tell the time—which made me think of Gino De Dominicis’ works

Orologio (1970) and Senza titolo (1972). The first consists of a clock without hands whose dial was replaced by the artist with a mirror, so that time is told by the aging of one’s face. The second is a photography portraying the artist in a three-quarter profile, in the foreground of a natural landscape, while looking at the same time at a clock and his picture as a kid. What exactly is the connection between your work and its perception in relation to the factor of time?

I’m not a believer and I still haven’t understood whether I’m an atheist. I’ll worry about it later. What do I have left to make a connection with the unfathomable? The Universe and Time. The myth of alchemy and a wristwatch. I think that many other artists–but this is an argument that I find it hard to make without tripping up–speak of time although without doing it directly, intentionally. For me the dimension of time, in art, corresponds to emotion. Time is perception. The work of art that does its job cancels its advance for a moment. A minute lasts sixty-one seconds. I’m especially thinking of the works of Gino De Dominicis, Robert Gober, Rebecca Horn and Pier Paolo Calzolari, to mention just a few.

But, to answer your question better, as well as trying to fix this idea of suspension through a complex play of relationships that are at times multisensory, I act directly by searching for the decisive moment. In Prima che sia troppo tardi (Before It’s Too Late), I isolate a single frame, in other words a minimal particle taken out of a visual sequence, from Ingmar Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal. I develop this frame as a photograph and imprison it J.M.

Elena Lydia Scipioni di Ingmar Bergman. Sviluppo questo frame come una fotografia e lo imprigiono in un tubo catodico. Fisso cioè un istante preciso, e lo consacro per sempre attraverso l’opera. Immagino – in linea con l’idea che anche semplici oggetti mi comunichino sempre qualcosa di profondo – che un tubo catodico si esaurisca, come avviene d’altronde nella realtà, conservando la memoria dell’ultima immagine che ha proiettato. In questo modo lavoro sul tempo, e nel tempo.

Nel lavoro Emily Dickinson, invece, introduco all’interno delle casse di due orologi una linea trasparente, un orizzonte quasi impercettibile, virtuale, che esiste solo in ragione della luce che lo illumina. Immagino una grande parete bianca intorno. Un grande silenzio. Una corda tesa ma sottile, la stessa linea che percepisco leggendo le poesie di Emily Dickinson e sapendo che ha vissuto tutta la vita reclusa prima nei confini del suo giardino, poi addirittura in camera sua. Questa linea diventa quindi confine, limite empirico, prigione, ma anche orizzonte per una fantasia, quella della poetessa, ai limiti dell’irrazionale. Viaggiare senza mai mettere piede fuori di casa, e ritrovarsi molti anni dopo acclamata come la più grande poetessa americana. Il senso dell’attesa poi, mi affascina particolarmente.

In Respiro / Breath l’ombra videoproiettata di un foglio appeso al muro si stacca dal foglio reale. Dopo essermi stancato un giorno di rivedere il lavoro in continuazione, mi sono accorto che l’attesa dell’evento doveva essere importante come l’evento stesso. Ho dilatato quell’attesa, e ho compreso di aver fatto un buon lavoro.

Jacopo Mazzonelli Nasce a Trento nel 1983. Si diploma in pianoforte e in musica contemporanea presso l’Accademia Internazionale TEMA di Milano. Parallelamente agli studi musicali realizza video, sculture e installazioni attraverso cui indaga l’elemento sonoro (musica e rumore, ritmo e silenzio) pur non includendolo necessariamente come evento uditivo nell’opera. La forma archetipica del metronomo, la figura del pianista Glenn Gould e del jazzista Charlie Parker, il pianoforte e le sue infinite possibilità timbriche sono stati punti di partenza per lo sviluppo di opere in cui il riferimento alla simbologia alchemica e alla geometria simbolica apparivano temi costanti. Oggi la ricerca di Mazzonelli indaga il suono come “evento”, come un punto di partenza per la costruzione di un nuovo linguaggio autonomo, libero da specifici riferimenti alle dinamiche della musica. Si tratta di una nuova metodologia di ricerca dove l’oggetto sonoro viene osservato da diverse angolazioni e si apre di conseguenza a infinite letture.

I imagine–in keeping with the idea that even simple objects convey something profound to me–that a cathode-ray tube wears out, as in fact happens in reality, preserving the memory of the last image it has displayed. In this way I work on time, and in time.

In the work Emily Dickinson, on the other hand, I introduce into the cases of two clocks a transparent line, an almost imperceptible, virtual horizon, that exists only because of the light that illuminates it. I imagine a large blank wall around it. A great silence. A taut but slender string, the same line that I perceive reading the poems of Emily Dickinson and knowing that she lived her whole life secluded first within the confines of her garden, and then those of her bedroom. So this line becomes a boundary, an empirical limit, prison, but also a horizon for an imagination, the poet’s, bordering on the irrational. Traveling without ever setting foot outside her home, and ending up a many years later acclaimed as America’s greatest woman poet. And then I find the sense of waiting particularly fascinating.

In Respiro / Breath the video-projected shadow of a sheet of paper hung on the wall detaches itself from the real sheet. After getting fed up with watching the work over and over again one day, I realized that the wait for the event should be as important as the event itself. I prolonged that wait, and understood that I had made a good work.

In parallel with his musical studies he began to explore various artistic media, including video, sculpture and installation. His works investigate the element of sound (music and noise, rhythm and silence) while not necessarily presenting it as something that can be heard part in the work itself. The archetypal shape of the metronome, the figures of the pianist Glenn Gould and the saxophonist Charlie Parker and the piano and its infinite possibilities of timbre are all used as starting points for the development of series of works in which the reference to the symbology of alchemy and to symbolic geometry appears constant. Most recently, Mazzonelli’s practice is especially concerned with sound as an “event,” or as the raw material of a new autonomous language that is free of any specific references to the dynamics of music. It’s a new research methodology in which the sound object is observed from different angles, and thus open to infinite readings.
