Design Statement

In an everchanging world filled with chaos and conflict, harmony between humanity and nature offers refuge. Whether achieved through intentional design or untouched wilderness, the outdoors are enduring. Integrating vegetative elements into our daily lives compels me to design with these principles for future generations. During my undergraduate years, I witnessed the personal impact of plants on my life, engaging all five senses—sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound. Planting presents a beautiful opportunity to awaken the childlike wonder in all of us.

Now, with my education, it’s time to inspire others to embrace the outdoors, whether for a respite from reality or much needed mental rejuvenation. Outdoor environments will undoubtedly serve as a sanctuary for all. Despite the world appearing controlled in many aspects, creating inviting public spaces remains a driving force in my work. The fusion of sustainability with functionality is now a tangible reality and an integral part of my philosophy. Transforming the perception of these practices is also a crucial goal I aim to achieve. Bridging gaps among people regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds and amplifying everyone’s voices are essential priorities.

I am thrilled to witness the evolution of landscape architecture and eagerly anticipate my role in facilitating future generations’ appreciation of the natural world.

About me

Growing up in the suburban town of Marietta, Georgia, surrounded by ample green space, I consistently engaged with the outdoors. My exposure to the natural world led to a profound realization of its daily benefits for everyone. During my high school years, I actively participated in landscape maintenance, cultivating a heightened appreciation for the specific flora and designed environments under my care.

Upon recognizing this pursuit as landscape architecture, I made an unwavering commitment to the profession. Endowed with a discerning designer’s eye, I consistently observe meticulously crafted beautiful spaces wherever I go, with the goal of creating a unique and enriching experience for users. My enthusiasm stems from engaging with individuals facing specific challenges, seeking to address and resolve their concerns through the meticulous design process.

Over the course of my professional journey, I have had the privilege of traveling to notable destinations such as Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, and European cities including Paris, Brussels, and London. In light of the vast opportunities presented by the global landscape, I am driven by the aspiration to design environments that not only foster community but also strengthen the connection between humanity and nature. In conclusion, I am sincerely excited by the prospect of contributing to the exploration and enhancement of our world through the transformative lens of landscape architecture.

Waterworks

Permanent Homeless Housing and Supportive Services

Atlanta, GA | Summer 2024 | Niles Bolton Associates

The Waterworks Rapid Housing Project is located near the corner of Northside Drive and 17th, and is expected to be a continuation of the City and Mayor Andre Dickens’ goal to help address homeless in Atlanta. It will be constructed with state-of-the-art modular construction to reduce labor time and cost. This development will feature two multistory buildings with 100 modular studio units, providing stable housing for Atlanta’s chronically unhoused residents earning less than 30% of the Area Median Income. Residents will also have access to critical services, including case management and mental health support, all in a location that connects them to transit, amenities, and opportunities. Ground broke for this site as of December 19th and they believe they could have tenets moving in as soon at May.

“This project is addressing homelessness in the city and that’s awesome!”

MTU Gateway Signage

Michigan Tech University Sign

Houghton, MI | Summer/Winter 2024| Niles Bolton Associates

During my Summer at NBA I helped out with a gateway sign adjacent to the entrance to the Michigan Tech University campus. NBA won the RFP for the student housing request, and our LA team was working on the next steps with the gateway sign design. After crafting many concepts, our final design accommodates pedestrians and cars with welcoming them to campus. When I came back to NBA during the winter break, the MTU clients came down to see our progression. As a scale exercise, I worked on printing out a 1”=1” scale design of the sign, as well as a 5’/10’ scale 3D printed model for them to interact with. Meeting the clients and getting immediate feedback was an incredible and educational opportunity.

Jacksonville State RFP

Student Housing and Baseball Field Addition

Jacksonville, AL | Summer 2024 | Niles Bolton Associates

During my summer at NBA I was able to help in the process of putting together a presentation package in response to the Jacksonville State Alabama RFP that was released to the public earlier that year. My role included site analysis, designing the communal outdoor living spaces on the site, creating the rendered site plan, Sketchup model and finding precedent images to create a narrative of the design. After we submitted in early June we got the notification that we had won the RFP in July! The plan includes many amenities such as an outdoor bermed lawn viewing area for the adjacent baseball field, hammock garden, central plazas and areas for student recreation. I really enjoyed working in the competion atmosphere.

Lake Loudoun / Caledonia

University of Tennessee Student Housing

Knoxville, TN| Summer 2024 | Niles Bolton Associates

Before I had started my time at NBA, the firm won multiple 2023 RFP’s for the University of Tennessee student housing projects. The current student housing and parking situations on campus are very much at a breaking point and the University has now invested many millions of dollars into helping solve this problem. NBA submitted designs for Andy Holt, Calendonia and Lake Loudoun Residence Halls and now all are currently under construction. Andy Holt and Caledonia are currently set to open in Fall 2025 with Lake Loudoun opening up in mid 2026. My role in this project was to help update the new hardscape, landscape and structural designs since they had to change throughout the CD process. In addition to this, I helped design the Melrose park connection adjacent to the Calednonia dorm to offer additional green space to the students residing on the nearby dorms. It was a great opportunity to dive deep into the 3D world with such a vast project.

New York Agricultural Land Planning

Long Island, NY | Winter 2024 | Niles Bolton Associates

Land planning is a big part of NBA landscape team and I got to dive head first into this world throughout my time there. This project takes over 225 agricultural acres in New York and transforms around 75 acres into a thriving multi-density community. With an agricultural theme, this master plan includes 150+ acres of preserved farm land, a “Market Commons” commercial space, “The View” townhome and cottage area, 3-story condos, “The Villas”a multi story active adult community, and “The Flats” multi-story apartments. This plan combines central green spaces, pocket parks, walking trails, gathering space and commercial commons to create a flourishing community. In addition to the main master plan, we created a “By-Right” plan to maximize space for a single family community.

Elevate Island

Elevate North Gate Entrance Island Planting

Navarre, FL| Summer 2024 | Niles Bolton Associates

After the multifamily apartment complex was fully constructed, the owner realized he wanted to spruce up the main entrance with colorful annual and perennial planting. I designed many options with different themes and objectives for him to chose between. This was an opportunity to get more familiar with plants from the 9A zone and work on annual planting design.

Rochester Residence

High End Residential Landscape

Gainesville, GA | Fall 2023 | Land Design Group Inc.

Throughout my time at Land Design Group, I worked on many residential projects that help me refine my smaller scale design skills and expand on my plant knowledge. A particular skill I learned was designing with deer in mind. Many of these residential projects were in the wooded suburbs of North Georgia, so finding a balance between flowering deer-resistance plants was at first a challenge, but then became a strength when designing these residences. I was responsible for initial client meetings to helping them choose a likable plant palette and then craft final CD hardscape and landscape documents.
