“Prevent the Plague” Skateboard In this day and age, advertising can be found everywhere, even on the bottom of a skateboard. And even in this day and age, some people fail to see the importance of vaccines. For this project, I was to choose a campaign while a style was chosen for me. I chose a provaccination campaign while fate handed me to design using the Bauhaus style. While researching the style, I came across the photo collage version of the style and chose to work with that version to explore with the aged and eerie feel. I came up with the “Prevent the Plague” title using the history of pandemics, especially the notable Black Death pandemic, to urge the importance of vaccinations. I tied together plague doctor imagery along with modern medical imagery such as an ambulance and needles to tie in that key factor of the past with more notable symbols for the audience to connect with. The red cross acts as a visual key for the audience to start with.

Cormoran Strike Book Cover Series For this project, we had to choose a series of books to read and then design new book covers for. I chose to redesign Robert Galbraith’s Cormoran Strike series, a mystery genre series that focuses on a private detective named Cormoran Strike. The first three books in the series were the only ones that were required to be redesigned. I chose to go with a minimulist approach to the books while also incorporating illustrations all done by me. I chose this since many of the previous versions of covers use photography and focus on the silhouette of the protaganist. For the illustrations, I chose a key item found in each of the books to highlight and then a quote from the book to highlight on the back.

Vintage Gentlemen Website Here I had to redesign a website of my choice. I decided to choose the website for the “Vintage Gentlemen business. I wanted to try and redesign for a masculine audience as a bit of a personal challenge. Since the business itself did not have much for their own brand, I used the branding they use in their coffee branding to brand the website. This allowed me to use silhouettes of gentlemen to decorate the website. I also used layering with the photography to add depth.

Te Ika Tika Lookbook Te Ika Tika is a fictional resturant that sells Maori cuisine that I had to brand and design. It is a family friendly resturant that uses Maori culture within the branding. The name meaning “the right fish and uses a fish in the logo that is designed based on Maori tattoos. The lookbook uses a mix of the branding and photography of the culture and of New Zealand to show the atmosphere the resturant would have. The lookbook holds information about the culture and of the resturant to sell the audience on the resturant. For the cover and binding of the book, I used natural materials. I used a wood back and front with the front lazer etched with the name and logo, and the spine is cloth and decorated with Maori patterns.

Dr. Pepper/Snapple Annual Report For this project, I had to choose between a list of companies to pick an annual report from. I chose the Dr. Pepper/Snapple company to design from for its illustrative branding. I then chose the 2012 annual report since it had a variety of photos I could work with in the redesign. Since within their own branding they already use red and blue, I decided to follow with it and add yellow to give it a playful feel to give it more visual interest to contrast against the business side of the report. Another thing I did to add to the branding for the redesign was use the bubble illustrations to continue with the playful atmosphere and to bounce off the idea of the soda that the company sells. Since much of the photography wasn’t of the best quality, I changed the photos to halftones to combat that challenge while also sticking with the bubbly branding. I added the finishing touch with a magnetic latch on the front cover using a bottle cap to tie in with the idea of a soda bottle.

The Plague Infographic This project most certainaly proved a challenge for me in two different ways. One was the time crunch since this project had to be done in a short amount of time after being given to the class. The second challenge was from the nature of the project itself since infographics are a challenge for me to design personally. The project required us to compare numbers over a timelaspe. I chose to do the plague and its history of deaths compared to present. Since I was having difficulties coming up with a way to design the information, I decided to do something completely out-of-the-box and design the poster as a scroll. This turns the design into an experience for the audience for as they unscroll it, it unveils the two hundred skulls that represent two hundred million dead. The scroll ends off on a quote from the book The Great Mortality which is about the Black Death pandemic.

Paddywax Website This was another project where we had to redesign a website of our choosing. I chose the business “Paddywax to redesign. They seemed to be in the middle of rebranding themselves since they had two different logos, so I chose to go with the full wordmark of on logo and the colors from the other. I made the colors slightly lighter to make the branding feel lighter and calmer.

Visit Hattiesburg Poster Series For this project we had to design a series of travel posters for Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Since so many of my projects are illustration focused, I decided to use photography in my series. I decided to take it another step further and do a collaged effect with the visuals. I came up with the tagline of “Explore the Layers of Hattiesburg, referencing different areas of Hattiesburg as different layers. I took three photos of three popular areas in Hattiesburg. These three places are the University of Southern Mississippi, downtown Hattiesburg, and the Longleaf Trace. I used two different color styles for the photography: full color and duotone. I used a ripped paper texture to separate the two styles and give off the idea that you are tearing away the layers. I also photoshopped different parts of the image to overlay some parts of the text to give the posters depth.

The Great Mortality Altered Book The Great Mortality is a book about the Black Death pandemic by John Kelly. The book is a compilation of the history of the Plague and accounts from people who lived and died during it. I chose to do this book as an altered book because I knew that I wanted to do a book about the Plague. The book has 26 different spreads throughout it. The first thing I did was rebound the book in a new material that gave it a bound in leather look. I handpainted the title onto the book in a blackletter typeface and glued dried flowers to the front in reference to the “Ring around the Rosie nusery rhyme. Within the book, I used a variety of different materials. Such items included more dried flowers, fake blood, old bits of cloth, plague imagery, a bell, a toy rat, and even chicken bones. Some spreads are completely painted over, another was burned, and some spreads include illustrations done by me.
