A M I T 2 0 1 3 A N N UA L D I N N E R Message from Debbie Isaac President One of my great delights as president of AMIT is having the pleasure of extending personal greetings upon the occasion of our Annual Dinner, a signature event on the AMIT calendar. As you look around the room tonight, you will notice that we have highlighted our exciting new renovation campaign. At AMIT, we keep moving with the times – always forward. I would like to welcome our special guest, MK Rabbi Shai Piron, minister of education of the State of Israel. Rabbi Piron is a member of our AMIT family, having formerly been principal of Yeshivat AMIT Kfar Ganim in Petach Tikva. Also with us this evening, for his first AMIT dinner, is Andy Goldsmith, our newly appointed executive vice president. In the coming months we will be looking to Andy to infuse our organization with his professionalism and enthusiasm. Each year our Annual Dinner serves as a benchmark for AMIT’s accomplishments, and we look to honor a number of individuals who have helped us to realize our mission and fulfill our legacy. This year is no exception. Ina and David Tropper are veteran AMIT leaders who have demonstrated great devotion to our organization, as well as to the wider Jewish community. Ina has fulfilled several major roles at AMIT, including currently serving as chair of our Board of Directors, and always can be counted upon to be meticulous, highly-detailed and world class. Chana and Daniel Shields have made their mark in the AMIT and Jewish communities of both Philadelphia and Teaneck. A member of a strong AMIT family that includes former President Norma Holzer, Chana has been active on several fronts with particular emphasis on NewGen and marketing. Associate chairs of the AMIT Young Leadership Board, Jill and Yoni Ellman represent the young couples who are ensuring a strong and vibrant future for AMIT. They have opened their home and their hearts to our organization, exemplifying the finest values of our Jewish heritage.

We also are paying tribute to the memory of Esther Semmelman z”l, Chana Shields’ sister and a lovely woman who shared her dedication to AMIT. Esther was artistic, talented and loved children, among many other attributes. Most fittingly, the Art Project at the AMIT Beatrice and Irving Stone Meysharim School in Shoham, Israel, is dedicated in her memory. As always, we had a terrific group of AMIT leaders working on tonight’s dinner. My deepest appreciation to Annual Dinner Chairs Stacey and David Kanbar who continue to champion AMIT in so many important ways; to Dinner Co-Chairs Caryn and Avi Golombeck, Robyn and Shukie Grossman, Rona and Ira Kellman and Jacques Semmelman; NewGen Dinner Co-Chairs Elana and Shami Minkove; Young Leadership Dinner Co-Chairs Elana and Matthew Grauer; AFLI Dinner Co-Chair Alex Thurm; and to the entire Dinner Committee. Special thanks are due the indefatigable AMIT staff who, year after year, produce this superb event. Our AMIT Network has grown in 2013 to include 110 schools and programs serving more than 26,000 students. We are a major presence in the State of Israel with an enormous job to do: preparing young people for the economy and the work force of the 21st century. A M I T 2 0 1 3 A N N UA L D I N N E R Message from Dr. Amnon Eldar Director General I would like to extend to you my heartfelt greetings on the occasion of the 2013 AMIT Annual Dinner. It is my honor and pleasure to offer my special congratulations to this year's esteemed honorees: Ina and David Tropper, Chana and Daniel Shields, and Jill and Yoni Ellman. I also wish to acknowledge Esther Semmelman, of blessed memory, a wonderful young AMIT leader, who cared so deeply for our students. Over the last decade, the AMIT Network has focused on professional leadership of principals, improving academic achievement, and instilling Jewish and Zionist values in our students, a concept we call Beit Hinuch. AMIT has been successful on all these fronts, empowering the principals leading our schools through mentoring and professional development; achieving unprecedented matriculation success rates; and instilling values and creating welcoming and supportive climates in our schools. These important focal points continue to be the foundation upon which we build. Looking ahead to the next decade, our focus will be threefold. We intend to extend leadership to all our partners: principals, school administrators, teachers, parents and students. Teaching and learning processes will be continually innovated, including nurturing relationships and personal development at school, developing learning skills necessary for integration into the 21st century, and using new technologies to that end. We aim to have a greater impact on communities and Israeli society, working together with our alumni, parents and community partners. We see leadership as empowering and inclusive, and are eager to realize our vision together with our partners. John F. Kennedy once said, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." These words are particularly apt at AMIT, where as an organization we are continually learning how to educate, innovate and lead. Again, my sincere appreciation to the honorees and all AMIT supporters for your leadership and dedication to AMIT. May we continue together to enrich and enhance the lives of our students on a daily basis.

When we were asked this year to chair the 2013 AMIT Annual Dinner, we immediately agreed to return the favor, and to do our best to help create a wonderful evening for a group of extraordinary and deserving honorees. We would like to convey our personal congratulations to Ina and David Tropper, to Chana and Daniel Shields and to Jill and Yoni Ellman, three couples who have demonstrated great dedication to AMIT and to its mission. They are truly deserving of tonight’s tribute. We also wish to acknowledge Esther Semmelman, of blessed memory, an exceptional young woman who devoted her life to good works, particularly on behalf of the Jewish community here and in Israel. Tonight’s dinner would not be the success it is without the tireless efforts of Robin Rothbort, and our exciting virtual journal was made possible by the creative trio of Jaclyn Smith, Maria Goldfarb and Laurie Georgeou. Our warm gratitude to the rest of the AMIT team: Liz Klibanoff, Barbara Goldberg, Amy Oppenheim, Miriam Kaplan, Dawn Sherry, Debbie Lyman and George McAdam. As the parents of two precious children, it is important to us that all Jewish children be given the opportunity to thrive and fulfill their dreams. Today, AMIT offers more than 26,000 youngsters in Israel the ability to maximize their potential and realize the hope of a brighter future. After “retiring” from teaching to concentrate on raising her family, Ina Tropper discovered AMIT. The idea of helping less fortunate children in Israel was the perfect “cause” to engage a young mother. Joining the Riverdale Chapter also brought lasting friendships and opportunities for creativity and personal growth. Ina served as chapter president, and later became involved at the national level. Over the years, Ina has chaired a number of committees, served as New York regional vice president, and as vice president for strategic planning. She currently serves as chair of the Board of Directors. In her Riverdale neighborhood Ina has been a member of the board of the Riverdale Jewish Center and serves on the committee administering the Fund for the Needy. For many years she served on the board of SAR Academy. Recently she and David were instrumental in establishing “Shitufim,” the network of SAR grandparents. David Tropper has always shared Ina’s commitment to AMIT. As a founding member of the Gesher Foundation, David served for ten years as its first president and remains a director of the Gesher Board. He has been an active member of various committees of the Riverdale Jewish Center and SAR Academy, and has served on their boards. David has been an active principal and executive in several companies in distribution, manufacturing, and visual merchandising. He currently sits as a strategic and financial advisor on the boards of Coda Resources, Lifestyle Forms, and the Global Visual Group. Ina and David are the proud parents of Elisha and Erit, Jonathan, Amram and Elisheva, and Dassi and Meir, who have all blessed them with a coterie of delicious grandchildren Sophia Spencer Adin Emma Joey Tani Haggai Gavi Liam Benayahu Alexa Tekhelet Liviah Ayelet Kanna Ronen Danielle.

Chana Shields has been active in AMIT for as long as she can remember. Her family has been deeply rooted in AMIT for generations and the organization has been an integral part of her life since she was a small child. Her grandmother Shirley Halpern was an active member of her Mizrachi chapter in Brooklyn, while her mother Marcia Holzer was involved on both the national and local levels and is a past National Board member as was her late sister Esther Semmelman z’l. Chana’s aunt, Norma Holzer, a past national president, deeply influenced her to follow the family trend and become involved in AMIT. Chana has held several positions on the national level of AMIT as well. She was a member of the inaugural NewGen Board, involved in the initiative to bring a younger generation into the fold of AMIT, she has served as recording secretary and currently is the national vice president of marketing. Chana also served as president of the Shira Chapter in Lower Merion, PA, and was instrumental in re-energizing the chapter. Chana has also made her mark in both the Philadelphia and Teaneck communities. She served as the chair of the Marketing Committee at Yeshivat Noam for many years as well as of the Board of Directors of Torah Academy of Philadelphia and has held positions on the sisterhoods of both Keter Torah and Lower Merion Synagogue. During her tenure in Philadelphia, Chana also served as AMIT’s representative to the JCRC of Philadelphia Chana earned her B.A. from Stern College and upon graduating joined an advertising agency, eventually becoming an assistant media director with influence on brands such as Proctor & Gamble and Coca Cola. She took those skills and formed TAP Marketing, a niche marketing and advertising firm focused on emerging and not-for-profit businesses. Chana works with numerous organizations, schools and businesses to develop strategy, promote brand awareness and implement successful marketing campaigns and events. Dan owes his interest in AMIT to Chana’s passion and devotion to the cause as well as his own family’s dedication to Jewish communal life. Growing up in Toronto, Dan witnessed his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers involvement in organizations ranging from the local Jewish day schools, yeshivot and synagogues to Bikur Cholim and Mizrachi. A central message in the Shields household is the importance of being involved and contributing to Jewish causes locally, nationally and in Israel. Dan has served as treasurer of the Lower Merion Synagogue and as a trustee of Yeshivat Noam, while also being active at Congregation Keter Torah. Dan is currently a principal of AscendAmerica, a boutique commercial real estate finance company and was previously a senior group manager in charge of the New York City Real Estate Department of M&T Bank. Dan received his B.A. and J.D. from Yeshiva University and his M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Chana and Dan live in Teaneck, NJ, and are the parents of Sarina, 11, Ayelet, 9, and Netanel, 6, all of whom are students at Yeshivat Noam. Each of them has already made meaningful contributions to AMIT by helping prepare for events, running their own fundraising campaigns, and sacrificing their “Mommy Time.”

Our Young Leadership Honorees, Jill and Yoni Ellman, both come from families dedicated to Israel, to the greater Jewish community, and to Jewish education. Jill is a graduate of the Westchester Day School, the Yeshiva University High School for Girls, Stern College for Women, where she received her BA in early childhood education, and The College of New Rochelle, where she earned an MA in literacy. She is currently a member of the faculty at her alma mater, Westchester Day School, where she serves as a learning specialist in both English and Judaic Studies and also serves as alumni liaison. Growing up, Jill witnessed the commitment of her mother, Margery Friedman, to various children’s organizations. At an early age, both Jill and her sister Caryn Golombeck learned the importance of helping those less fortunate. This lesson has strengthened their commitment to the children of AMIT. Yoni Ellman grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and attended Yeshiva Shaarei Mevaseret Zion and Yeshiva University. He is a partner in Group 8A LLC, a boutique consulting firm focused on e-commerce and digital marketing. Yoni also serves as the head wrestling coach at the Torah Academy of Bergen County, dedicates his spare time to coaching high school wrestling, and is the founder of the Erez Wrestling Youth Program in Teaneck, New Jersey. It is one of the Ellman family dreams for AMIT to start a wrestling program in Israel. Yoni has a deeply rooted passion for Israel and is proud to help children in need. He comes from a family committed to Jewish education. His mother, Elana Ellman, has been involved in Jewish education in Atlanta for over 30 years. His father, “Coach” George Ellman, has been the volunteer wrestling coach at Yeshiva Atlanta for 18 years. His brother, Rabbi Mickey Ellman, is a rebbi at Yeshivat Yishrei Lev in Israel. Since becoming involved in AMIT Jill and Yoni have hosted countless meetings in their home, co-chaired March Madness three times, co-chaired a very successful art gallery event and most recently co-chaired the first Annual Young Leadership BBQ. They currently serve as associate chairs of the Young Leadership Board.

OF

Esther Holzer Semmelman z”l, grew up in Monsey, New York. She graduated from Barnard College where she studied art history, and received a law degree from NYU Law School. Esther began her career at the law firm of Kaye Scholer, and subsequently worked at the UJA Federation. Esther’s mother Marcia Holzer and grandmother Shirley Halpern z”l, were both active members of AMIT, and her aunt Norma Holzer served as president of AMIT for several years. Esther’s love of children, coupled with her family’s commitment, made AMIT a natural choice for Esther’s involvement. Esther was a member of the inaugural NewGen Board, and later served on the National Board. Her innate sensitivity to the needs of children, her practical insight into the success of proposed ventures, as well as her strong dedication to AMIT’s mission, made her an invaluable member of the organization’s leadership. Esther z”l lived with her husband Jacques and their two children in Teaneck, New Jersey, where they were active in many communal organizations including their shul, Rinat Yisrael, Shalva, Keren Or, Moriah, and the Torah Academy of Bergen County. Their son David, age 18, is currently a senior at the Torah Academy of Bergen County, while their daughter Alyssa, age 14, began her freshman year at Frisch this fall. Esther z”l, died August 11, 2012, after a heroic ten-year battle with cancer. The Art Project at the AMIT Beatrice and Irving Stone Meysharim School in Shoham, Israel, is dedicated in her memory.
