What is architecture to me?

Architecture has always been an act of discovery for me. As a kid I didn’t know architecture could be a job, but ever since I first experienced the profession in 2011 by accident, I haven’t looked back once. The fusion of design and engineering, combined with the effect it can have on people, has always captured my imagination. For me, working individually or in teams to create habitable spaces that are safe, effective, and pleasing to the eye is my Architecture, is my profession, and is my zeal.

STRAUS HOUSES masonry design competition 2016

In the context of New York City, countless spaces exist that are in need of repair and regulation. They currently do not create an environment that encourages social encounters, but instead disrupt and pull apart the urban setting. Many of these complexes were built in the 50’s and 60’s as part of affordable housing development. Many were built in masonry. Furthermore, they are seldom contextual and thus separated the building complex from the rest of the city. The Straus Houses are no exception. At the core of the issue is the way its inhabitants are viewed and architecturally removed from the Kips Bay community. To counteract these forces, the new design introduced 3 core public programs to mix inhabitants with the surrounding neighborhood; a recreation center, a semi-sheltered basketball court, and a library. On-site parking was shifted below grade and shared public rooftop spaces were introduced to bridge the gap between the public program and private residences of the two towers. Additionally, the rooftops of the towers were updated to become usable private spaces for inhabitants. Lastly, brick work was replaced with glass and structure was exposed on the main facades to open the towers up to natural light. This brick was then repurposed to build the structure for the public programs on the first and second levels.

This project was submitted to and won 3rd place in a student design competition sponsored by the Associated Brick Mason Contractors of Greater New York and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 New York.

‘Kissing Sparrows’

‘Kissing Sparrows’ is an amalgamation of a unit and a system. Built out of laser cut deep textured rolled stainless steel, the ‘Sparrows’ come together to ‘Kiss’ and form into a wind resistant matrix. Each Sparrow starts out as a kite shaped piece of metal and is laser cut to specification. It is then hand bent and assembled by a 2-person team. Once formed, the Sparrows can interlock into an infinite variety of assemblies via the pre-laser cut adjustable tracks. Assembly can be done with minimal hardware and tools; nuts, bolts, washers, and socket wrenches. Additionally, the assembly is fully weather resistant with all hardware and metal made form high grade stainless steel.

This project was submitted to and won the runner up prize to the Boston Society of Architect’s Bigger than a Breadbox, Smaller than a House design competition. +Farm collaborated with Rigidized Metals in Boston, MA for the textured metals and subsequent laser cutting. All photos shown are located onsite in Boston’s famed Silo-City.

Architecture through Perception

With Mayor Bill de Blasio’s push for new affordable housing, the largely untouched and low density housing in East Harlem was bound for a major rezoning proposal. Fortunately the initial 30 block long proposal that was drafted was met with protest from local residents as it seriously neglected and displaced thousands of families in the area without an interim housing solution. Following this pushback the East Harlem Neighborhood Plan, a community-based vision and strategy for the future of East Harlem was initiated. This group was put together to address and propose solutions for some of the major issues with the plan. Unfortunately, their calls seemed to fall on deaf ears and a patronizing tone as their proposal was vastly ignored despite the dozens of community hearings that took place in 2017. A single word – gentrification – sat at the heart of these discussions. It is my belief that the issue at hand was not only the rezoning itself, but also the preconceived notions of what it entitled. The goal of this project was to understand the underlying perceptions and subsequently demonstrate an alternative method in order to address the ever growing concerns of the city’s affordable housing crisis.

This project was awarded and featured in City Works, an annual school wide compilation of the top projects in architecture and related fields.

The 26th Ward Wastewater Treatment Plant (26 WWTP) is one of New York City’s premier facilities, earning the ISI Envision® Sustainable Infrastructure Silver Award and the ASCE Infrastructure ‘Game Changer’ Award in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Despite this 26 WWTP remains archaic in both sustainability and design when compared on an international scale, utilizing antiquated practices such as flaring gas, mixing of organic and non-organic waste, and landfill heavy dependency.

Because of these oversights, the new design calls for an additional facility to be developed in tandem with the existing infrastructure. The new program introduced mediates the boundary between the infrastructure and public space encouraging interaction and transforming 26 WWTP into a city wide magnet for sustainability and culture. At its core lies the thought process of ‘shared infrastructure’ rather than the existing divided city agency’s approach. The Industrial Marsh ties together inputs such as wastewater and organic waste, and turns them into outputs such as compressed natural gas, food grade fertilizer, and locally harvested agriculture and aquaculture. Additionally, the plant generates 100% of its own heat and electricity and would have enough leftover CNG to power roughly 50% of the MTA’s bus fleet that park across the street every night.

This project was guided with the aid of Hillary Brown, former design director and Assistant Commissioner at New York City’s Department of Design and Construction and founder of its Office of Sustainable Design in 1996. She was co-author and managing editor of both the City of New York High Performance Building and Infrastructure Guidelines, and co-author of the USGBC’s State and Local Green Building Toolkit. Brown serves on the Board of Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment under the National Research Council of the National Academies. She is a Fellow with the Post Carbon Institute and a Senior Policy Advisor at the Ecologic Institute, U.S.. She has served on the National and New York City Board of Directors of the U.S. Green Building Council.

A. Philip Randolph High School is located within the perimeter of The City College of New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campus. The buildings roots can be traced back to the founding of the High School of Music and Art in 1936. In 1984 it formally changed hands to the now magnet school. For this project, the elevated parking lot located in the front for the school was to be utilized to create additional classrooms. This project was to be documented as a part of our comprehensive design requirement. To address this, we started with the notion of prefab construction. The design carries a modular structural system to the face of the building. This system is expressed through a modular metric of the grid on multiple scales, while naturalistic elements are woven into the site to provide for phenomenological and experiential continuity. These two systems, the articulated grid and the naturalistic curvilinear vector, clash to break from the bureaucratic monotony and provide for a healthy academic space for students.

This project was awarded the Student of the Year Award to my partner Michail Pikos and I, a school wide recognition for the best project based on integrity and comprehensive design. This project was also awarded and featured in City Works, an annual school wide compilation of the top projects 05/16/2016 in architecture and related fields.

Rooftop Resuscitation

Aaron Davis Hall (ADH) is a part of the City College of New York and the largest performing arts center in Manhattan north of Lincoln Center. It features 2 theaters that seat 630 and 267 people and a studio complex. The venue showcases cultural performances, including classical, jazz and Latin music, dance, theater, literary readings, film, performance art, and art exhibitions. ADH hosts an ambitious, year-round calendar of events, most of which are open to the public. The architecture houses an innovative two-theatre performing arts complex that houses public performances and exhibitions by students as well as professional artists, and serves as the cultural hub for Northern Manhattan and Harlem. ADH is the only cultural facility of its kind between Lincoln Center and Northern Manhattan and is used by groups like Carnegie Hall, Dance Theater of Harlem, Ballet Hispanico, the Harlem School of the Arts, and other community-based and cultural organizations.

However, most City College students have no idea what the building is, despite walking past it every day to and from the dorms and the subway. In its current state, its potential is untapped as a building. To address this, the design analyzed the multiple rooftops. These roofs are not used and were the inspiration to transform the building into a tectonic park with spaces to be used both publicly for the college as well as privately by the performing arts students. At its core, the design utilizes the white noise and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;curtain-likeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; effect of water to redesign the entrance and roofs. The design accommodates a new flexible gallery space with semitransparent waterfall curtains to allow light, but not sound to penetrate the space. The rooftops consist of a park which spans across the building and connects the students who pass by and encourages them to interact with the building. Lastly the upper most amphitheater showers across the other roofs and provides a private outdoor space for the performing arts school.

This project was awarded and featured in City Works, an annual school wide compilation of the top projects in architecture and related fields.

2nd Semester

Glitch Space

This conceptual project was an exercise to understand the effect a human body can have on the space that surrounds it. It was an iterative process that began with the mapping of the human body performing an action involving a drastic motion. A network of implied force vectors was derived from the motion and applied to a space. The result was a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;glitchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the system; the movement of the body was defined as a series of points and vectors represented by wooden sticks and their intersections. The space was represented by white chipboard. Due to the disruption the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s action caused on the space, the vector lines become the very elements that hold the space together and give it structural form.

This project was awarded and featured in City Works, an annual school wide compilation of the top projects in architecture and related fields.
