When we came here, we were fifteen years old. Now we are seventeen years old. Jackson Street helped us go from teenagers, to preparing us to become responsible and independent adults. Jackson Street has done so many things for us. We learned another language (English!), communication skills, scheduling, cooking skills, budgeting, how to do self care, and so many more different life skills. Jackson Street helped us to be more confident in ourselves. They also encouraged and supported us to be part of school activities, and they have taken us to so many activities. Also, Jackson Street always supports our cultural traditions and celebrations. Jackson Street has been there for us in every step of our progress. That’s one of the things we love the most: being supported no matter what. –Iris & Rubi
Executive Director!
In November 2003, just two years after the doors of our original shelter first opened, I was offered my first paid position at Jackson Street. I often think of those grassroots efforts to open a shelter for 10-17 year olds. We are a significantly larger organization now, but our community is still there right beside us as we support youth in need. I remember thinking that it was so cool that I was getting paid to make sure the youth we were serving felt safe and loved. I’d sit down for dinner with the youth and we’d share “highs and lows” from our day (a tradition that continues every dinner meal). Of the hundreds of youth I’ve worked with over the years, not all of my interactions started or ended positively. You simply give each youth the best of you, which is what they truly deserve. I have sat with youth through break ups, parental abandonment, gender transitions, even miscarriages. I have been cussed out, sat with youth at the hospital, mediated family and peer conflict. I have brushed my teeth with youth who had never been taught how, visited youth in prison, and sent care packages to those serving in our military. At Jackson Street, we know that all of this work is actually, “seed planting.” The best part about being with this specific organization for 20+ years is that I’ve now been around long enough to see many of the seeds that have been planted, GROW! And WOW, are they beautiful! Every year I’ve witnessed small victories and major milestones: a phone call that didn’t end in tears, graduating from high school, a first load of laundry, a first job, reuniting with family. Now I’m working alongside past residents as they become leaders in our organization, community, and state!
TOGETHER, WE CAN end youth homelessness. With you beside us – cheering, giving, advocating and volunteering – Jackson Street is in more places, offering more services, connecting with more youth, and having a greater impact than ever before.
It’s truly incredible what can come from seeds that are planted with great care, in the soil of safety, stability, and hope. Thank you for your role in supporting the challenges and celebrating the bounty!

A new Youth Service Center in Albany will expand the hub of our Outreach team. Renovations happening now will allow us to open a daytime drop-in center for youth and young adults this winter. Both 24/7 Shelters (Corvallis House & Albany House) reopened last summer after years of major renovations to add beds and improve safety; there are now 26 beds in our region for homeless or at-risk minors. Expanded our Next Steps program and developed a tiered housing model that is now considered a national “promising practice.” We now have 25 units of long term housing for young adults who would otherwise be homeless. New support groups –like bilingual Parenting Classes, Unity Circle in the local schools, and Queer Peers Middle School in Benton County – build positive relationships and connections for stability. Our amazing staff is now 46 FTE and growing! We’re still improving benefits and being a great place to work and volunteer.
