Dear Jacksonians,
Welcome to Jackson State University’s 2012 Homecoming! As “One Nation Under the Blue,” Jacksonians from near and far are gathering to celebrate all that is great at JSU. And this year, we have much to celebrate.
Jackson State University is moving in new and exciting directions. Every day faculty, staff and students are making new discoveries and achieving extraordinary things. The university’s reach has expanded through more evening and weekend classes and online degree programs, and the campus continues to grow beyond west Jackson. The university now has five satellite campuses throughout Jackson, including the soon-to-open downtown location.
The university also is advancing technologically, especially through the new scholarship program that supplied freshmen with iPads, and the launch of JSU’s new Digital Media Center. Jackson State can now be seen and heard around the world!
We’re especially excited about the 2012 Homecoming activities, which include a gospel concert, comedy show and the traditional Friday night Greek show. Jackson State’s Olympian Michael Tinsley, who won the silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2012 Summer Games, and civil rights pioneer Dr. Robert Smith, will be the Homecoming Parade’s grand marshals.
This celebration is certain to touch the entire city of Jackson with True Blue Tiger spirit. We look forward to seeing you there!

JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY
Jackson State University, founded in 1877, is a historically black, high research activity university located in Jackson, the capital city of the state of Mississippi. Jackson State’s nurturing academic environment challenges individuals to change lives through teaching, research and service. Officially designated as Mississippi’s Urban University, Jackson State continues to enhance the state, nation and world through comprehensive economic development, health-care, technological and educational initiatives.
The only public university in the Jackson metropolitan area, Jackson State is located near downtown, with three satellite campuses throughout the city.
Jackson State University is accredited by the Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award 43 bachelor’s degrees, 36 master’s degrees, three specialist-in-education degrees and 11 doctoral degrees.
SARAH BROWN
Miss Jackson State University 2012-2013
Sarah Brown is a senior physics major and honor student at Jackson State University. A native of Jackson, Miss., Sarah, 21, is the daughter of Keith Brown and Jawanaday Kay Blue.
A 2009 honors graduate of Forest Hill High School, Sarah was named as her high school’s Miss Sophomore, Miss Junior, Homecoming Queen, and in her senior year, campus queen. Sarah is a Forest Hill High School Hall of Fame inductee and was a member of the National Honor Society, Who’s Who Among American High Schools and received the NAACP Public Speaking Award.
An honor student at JSU, Sarah is a member of the Meteorology Club, the JSU Society of Physics, Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Sarah has represented JSU while studying astrophysics for two consecutive summers at the University of California at Berkeley. Sarah also has been selected by Penn State as a Future Geoscientists for a Sustainable Earth Environment (FGSEE) scholarship recipient and is one of the first student apprentices to study under the Mississippi Academy for Science Teachers program at Jackson State. Sarah will travel to New York this fall and represent JSU as a Thurgood Marshall Scholar.
Sarah serves her community by tutoring Whitten Middle School students in math and science and volunteering at Stewpot Community Services. For the past four years, Sarah has worked at Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home as a funeral director. During the summer of 2010, Sarah made history as the first African American to serve as a missionary at Eagle Rock Christian Camp in Nashville.
Through her platform “Think BIG,” Sarah hopes to produce BIGGER Service, BIGGER, Impact and BIGGER Success for JSU and the surrounding community. Sarah looks to provide resources that will help increase graduation rates, prepare students for post baccalaureate tests and provide mentorship to all students while hosting public service forums.
A strong believer in God, Sarah’s favorite scripture is Isaiah 30:21, “Whether you turn to the left or turn to the right, our ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’.”
DR. ROBERT SMITH
Homecoming 2012 grand marshal
Dr. Robert Smith is the CEO and executive director for the Central Mississippi Health Services, Inc. in Jackson, Miss. In this position, he has served as a pioneer of community-based health services and continues to serve as a primary care physician to those who are economically disadvantaged and underserved. As a community leader and servant for the past six decades, Dr. Smith has been a physician, civil rights activist, researcher and educator.
At Central Mississippi Medical Center, Dr. Smith became the first minority to serve as chief of staff at a major tertiary level hospital in Jackson. He is currently on the senior active staff for CMMC, Mississippi Baptist Health Systems and St. Dominic’s Health Center.
During the 1960s, Dr. Smith was a charter fellow and a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine. In 1964, he also was a founding member of the Medical Committee for Human Rights and later, in 1985, a co-principal investigator in the groundbreaking Arteriosclerosis in Communities at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Smith has been featured in several publications, including the New York Times, Time, Ebony, Tufts Medicine, and several scientific journals.
A native of Terry, Miss., Dr. Smith is married and is the father of three children and one adopted daughter.
MICHAEL TINSLEY
Homecoming 2012 grand marshal
Jackson State University alumnus Michael Tinsley earned a silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympic games. Tinsley, who competed in the 400-meter men’s hurdles, finished with a personal best of 47.91 seconds.
While at Jackson State, Tinsley earned national and international recognition in 2006 when he finished sixth at the USA Outdoor meet and won at the NCAA Championships, becoming the first JSU track athlete to win an NCAA Division I title.
Jackson State celebrated Tinsley’s win by proclaiming Thursday, June 15, 2006, “Michael Tinsley Day” and publicly recognizing him and his family with a reception at the Walter Payton Recreation and Wellness Center on campus.
Also in 2006, Tinsley won at the Texas Relays and continued to move up in the national rankings. He ended the year ranked No. 10 in the Track and Field News World Rankings.
In 2005, Tinsley earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was ranked No. 7 at the end of the year in the U.S. Track & Field News.
At the 2004 Southwestern Athletics Conference Outdoor Championships, Tinsley won both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles titles.
The Little Rock, Ark., native said being a student at Jackson State was the best experience of his life.
“I remember all the support I got from the faculty when I was there,” he said. “JSU gave me an opportunity to get an education and to do what I love to do, which is run track.”
