Welcome to our Winter Edition Welcome to the latest edition of Accelerator. 2020 was not an easy year for any of us. For those of us in the motor industry, we saw production facilities temporary close causing supply chain disruption and some manufacturers joined the fight against Coronavirus, converting their automotive plants into factories producing ventilators and PPE for the NHS. We have all had to learn to adapt to these changing times. One thing that has remained constant at Jacksons is our drive to provide a great level of service for all our customers throughout the pandemic. We have organised contactless test drives and
handovers, handled sales enquiries via phone, email and live video chat, offered remote valuations on part exchanges and even helped arrange finance online, allowing customers to buy their next car from the comfort of their own home. We’ve ensured our showrooms and forecourts are ‘covid-safe’, working to the latest Government guidelines, following strict hygiene protocols, maintaining social distancing and doing our utmost to protect both our staff and customers from infection. Our teams have been working in difficult and everchanging conditions but have continued to put our customers first and I can’t thank them enough for all their hard-work and ongoing commitment.
Our local communities have really come together during these tricky times and we pride ourselves in giving something back. During the festive season, we partnered with Channel 103, Island FM and Ravenscroft for the annual Channel Island Christmas Toy Appeal. Collection points were set up in both our Jersey and Guernsey showrooms so that islanders could drop off much needed donations before being distributed to childrens’ charities on the islands.

Life in the Electric Lane
$100 - peak oil was still very much a thing whilst broad adoption of the electric vehicle very much wasn’t. Yet, despite the financial and technological headwinds, Tesla was proving battery electric vehicles (EVs) could be stylish, high performance and (perhaps eventually) commercially viable.
It was about 10 years ago when an ex-Goldman Sachs’ energy analyst turned fund manager sat in front of us explaining the valuation process and investment methodology he had applied to the oil & gas sector in order to determine the best value-formoney investments. It was as clear as day to us, that no matter how well capitalised and managed an oil & gas company was, its fortunes were held hostage to a variety of volatile, difficult to control, and even harder to predict factors that left the investment case vulnerable to numerous outcomes. As the Q&A wrapped up, we asked one final question “What killsoff demand for oil?”, his rapid and direct response was, “The broad adoption of the electric vehicle”.
A decade on, we find ourselves in a very different world indeed. Oil, at the time of writing (late in November), was trading in a range between $40-$45 a barrel, having recovered from a Covid-19 pandemic crash low, where contracts for immediate delivery actually went negative – i.e. producers were paying to have their oil taken from them! Whilst Tesla, after a five-for-one stock split in August 2020, was trading at $497 a share, with a market capitalisation of almost half a trillion dollars. It seems extraordinary that Tesla could 145x its IPO price (adjusting for the stock split) within a decade and be worth more than the entire market value of US listed exploration and production companies. It’s been an odd year but is the market really pricing in the end of the combustion engine?

This frank and honest response surprised us. After all, Tesla had just gone public (at $17 a share, raising $226m) with one car in production, the Roadster. The chat-amongst-town was one of a recovering oil price (the price of Brent crashed to a low of $36 a barrel in 2009) making its way back towards
The comparisons justifying, or attempting to read into, Tesla’s meteoric rise are something of a sport amongst the financial press and analytical community. So without wanting to be left out, we reckon Tesla (in late November) is worth more than twice the big German
manufacturers combined – that’s the Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW groups multiplied by two! That’s some valuation, in both absolute and relative terms, given that 2019 sales of light vehicles came in at around 90 million, of which 370,000 were Teslas and 15 million were sold by the Germans. The German groups are also among the most profitable, so if we assume that Tesla can eventually make a similar profit per car, then the stock market seems to imply that Tesla will grow annual sales to 30m or so vehicles with a global market share of perhaps one third! We’re tremendously impressed by what Tesla and its founder Elon Musk have achieved, but the Ravenscroft investment team has never been brave enough to buy the shares on behalf of our clients. Why? Well, while we believe Tesla’s future is finally secure, there were so many times when the company was in dire financial straits and sustained only by Musk’s unparalleled knack in tapping the markets for ever more cash. We don’t have any particular views on what Tesla will become, or what its main business will be, as it strives to save the planet from carbon overload – that’s hard to call and even harder to value (too many unknown, unknowns!). From an investment perspective, we think there are easier bets to be made among the legacy car manufacturers as we transition to EV platforms, although some are much better placed than others. In our view, the Germans are among the most likely to produce EVs that are competitive, desirable and profitable. We’ve even heard a Tesla insider say the same! Moreover, assuming Tesla enters the mass market as planned, it runs the risk of degrading its premium brand and leaving the goal wide open to the Germans in the premium EV segment. Each of the German groups could do well in this emerging electric world, but let’s take a closer look at BMW as an illustration (full disclosure: Ravenscroft’s
Global Blue Chip fund holds BMW shares). The company has put heavy investment and careful thought into the future of motoring. Its strategy is flexibility and to make pretty much its entire range of models available in a choice of petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or fully electric – all rolling down the same production lines. Ultimately, BMW’s customers will decide how quickly the company transitions towards EV, without having to compromise on the valued BMW driving experience. BMW is already out in front with PHEVs, which provide the same benefits of full EVs in trips of up to 100km but have the benefits of an engine for longer trips or where charging infrastructure is lacking. BMW’s PHEVs are proving to be a compelling solution for many, and this is reflected in very strong sales growth for these models. On the pure EV front, things start getting interesting from next year with the launch of the i4, built on the same compact executive platform as the 3 and 4 series. In terms of range, performance and features, it looks to be highly competitive with Tesla’s best-selling Model 3. Also, next year, we’ll see the iX hit the roads, a high-end SUV the same size as the X5, again with Tesla-style performance. And in 2022, there will be an electric 7 series, then an electric 5 series, an electric X1 – you get the picture. We don’t believe the end is imminent for combustion engine cars, but the direction of travel is clear. The legacy manufacturers reflect this with low share prices (as do oil and gas companies!). Some legacy manufacturers will of course struggle as the world goes electric; and in any case, this has always been a very tough industry to succeed in. But others will flourish, and therein lies the opportunity. The full-width load floor is completely flat, with up to six integrated lashing points, heavy-duty rubber mats and a set of lockable storage areas providing with 58 litres of underfloor stowage at the rear of both the 90 and 110. An additional underfloor area is fitted to the 110 Hard Top, where the footwells of the Defender passenger model would normally be found, providing 155 litres of hidden stowage, and the whole load area is illuminated by enhanced interior lighting five times brighter than the standard passenger Defender. Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD
With The Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 is Volvo’s first ever fully electric car. It is based on the best-selling XC40 small premium SUV, the first Volvo model to win the prestigious European Car of the Year award. Inside, an innovative approach to all-round functionality provides drivers with plenty of storage space. The XC40 Recharge P8 offers several large and smartly designed storage compartments in the doors, under the seats and in the trunk. Not having an internal combustion engine means that the car provides drivers with even more storage space, via a so-called ‘frunk’ storage space under the front hood.
Connectivity and infotainment The XC40 Recharge P8 is the first Volvo model equipped with a brand new infotainment system powered by the Android operating system. The new infotainment system offers customers unprecedented personalisation, improved levels of intuitiveness and new embedded Google technology and services, such as the Google Assistant, Google Maps and the Google Play Store. It is also the first Volvo that receives larger software and operating system updates over the air, placing Volvo Cars at the forefront of automotive connected services. The XC40 Recharge P8 will keep evolving and improving over time, rather than being at its peak when it leaves the factory.
Powertrain technology The XC40 Recharge P8 comes with a state-of-the-art, fully electric all-wheel drive powertrain that offers a range of over 400 km on a single charge under the WLTP drive cycle and output of 408hp. The battery charges to 80 % of its capacity in 40 mins on a fast-charger system.
Safety and driver assistance While building on the excellent safety standards of the original XC40, Volvo Cars safety engineers had to completely redesign and reinforce the frontal structure of the XC40 Recharge P8 to deal with the absence of an engine, meet Volvo Cars’ high safety requirements and help keep occupants as safe as in any other Volvo. The battery is protected by a safety cage which consists of a frame of extruded aluminum and has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around it. The battery’s placement in the floor of the car also has the benefit of lowering the centre of gravity of the car, for better protection against roll-overs. At the rear, the electric powertrain has been integrated in the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin. The XC40 Recharge P8 is also the first Volvo model equipped with a new, scalable Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform with software developed by Zenuity, the joint venture firm owned by Volvo Cars and Veoneer. The new MINI Countryman The MINI Countryman Plug-In Hybrid ALL4 (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 – 1.7 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.0 – 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO2emissions: 45 – 40 g/km) combines efficiency and hybrid-specific all-wheel drive with the option of pure electric driving. In addition to plug-in hybrid drive, the new MINI Countryman is also available with two petrol engines and one diesel engine featuring the latest MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology. The engines have seen extensive development and cover an output ranging from 100kW/136hp to 140 kW/178 hp. They already meet the emissions standard Euro 6d, which will not be binding until 2021.
