Low interest rates, fluctuating stock markets, Brexit and Trump – all valid reasons for thinking the best way to save for your future is to put it under the mattress. But an increasing number of Channel Islanders are turning to Ravenscroft, the Channel Island‘s only independent stockbroker and investment manager. Haydn Taylor, managing director of Ravenscroft Jersey, looks at the reasons why.

I have spent 30 years in the finance industry and now more than at any time, through the advent of the internet which allows people to research and understand previously complex subjects, investors are taking a real interest in the “hows” and “whys” of their investments rather than just focusing on the returns.

That, and increasing regulation, presents a challenge for stockbrokers and investment managers as they need to be able to explain, easily and plainly, the reasons for the decisions they are taking on behalf of their clients or the recommendations they are making. For Ravenscroft, we don’t see that as a challenge as it’s something we have been doing since the business was started.

As a Channel Islands-based business, our people are our biggest strength and that’s true from the top down. Leading the company is an impressive board which includes Jon Ravenscroft, who has over 30 years of experience in traditional stockbroking, Andrew Stewart, co-founder of Collins Stewart and Stephen Lansdown, significant shareholder of Ravenscroft and co-founder of Hargreaves Lansdown, a current FTSE100 constituent.

Ravenscroft now has a team of more than 80 in the Channel Islands providing traditional execution and advisory stockbroking, segregated and pooled investment management, market making and corporate finance services. In the last 12 months, the Jersey team has grown considerably including the appointment of five highly regarded and experienced stockbrokers from Canaccord - Richard Mason, Ross Garrard, Justin Jouan, Anthony McGovern and Patrick McConnell. The team has also been joined by Garry Beardshall in the role of Treasury Manager.

That growth, as well as a move to new offices at Weighbridge House, has been transformational, and the Jersey business is set to have its most successful year.
