Gold: Supercharger or Spoiler? Don’t let the thought of investing in physical precious metals weigh you down. There are many reasons why people should consider buying and holding gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Robin Newbould from BullionRock explains more.
Why have precious metals in your portfolio? Gold is a highly liquid yet scarce asset that is not correlated to ‘conventional market’ returns and carries no counterparty risk, if bought and held properly. As such, according to The World Gold Council, gold can play four fundamental roles in a portfolio:
A source of long-term returns;
A diversifier that can mitigate losses in times of market stress;
On the other hand silver tends to act as though tied by an elastic band to gold, swinging further and later behind it and we currently see a 20 year historic price gap to gold. You may also be aware that both platinum and palladium are used primarily in the automotive industry. Platinum, which was once more expensive than gold, has reduced in price as a result of the reduction in demand for diesel engines which include catalytic converters made from platinum. Conversely, and as a direct result, palladium has really been the success story of the last five years as automotive giants have demanded a reduction in emissions from petrolengined cars.

The Council’s analysis shows that by adding 2%, 5% or 10% in gold over the past decade to the average investment portfolio would have both increased returns and reduced volatility. That said, appreciate that all four metals have had more of a mixed portfolio performance of late. First off, you should know that although gold usually behaves quite differently from the others, the yellow metal is still seen more as a safe harbour. However gold has recently been vying for attention with the US Dollar and losing out as President Trump assures us that the US economy has never been in better shape… watch this space!
