Greetings!

July 2014 marked an important transition for my family. My wife Laurie and I were ecstatic to return to our home state of Mississippi with our children, and we were thrilled that Jackson Prep had selected me to serve as the sixth Head of School. Our family was welcomed with open arms by the Prep family. I was told that Jackson Prep had begun using the hashtag “#prepfamily” in our social media posts, and I quickly recognized that we are a big “family” here at Prep. We were overwhelmed by the sweet treats, meals, invitations, and words of encouragement you all provided as we settled into our new life in Jackson.

The tragic and unexpected illness and passing of our beloved student, Walker Wilbanks, in August further solidified my understanding of what #prepfamily really means. The massive outpouring of support shown by our entire community for Jackson Prep, the Wilbanks family, and for me personally was truly amazing and sincerely appreciated.

Laurie and I are extremely grateful that you’ve allowed us to become part of the Prep family. We are so glad to be here with you.

O

n a day in mid-April, 1970, the life of a young social studies teacher from Tennessee intersected with a newborn college preparatory school poised to be introduced to the community with the opening of its doors in August. Susan Lindsay sat in Jesse Howell’s office that day and listened to him reveal his vision for Jackson Prep—to establish a top-rate college preparatory school. As the school’s first Headmaster, Mr. Howell invited Susan to join him and the inaugural faculty as a social studies teacher…and so, a life journey began for Susan Lindsay.

After having served Prep in almost every capacity from classroom teacher to administrator, Susan was named Head of School in 2004 after a nationwide search. Her ten years as Head marked the pinnacle of a 40-year career devoted to the institution of Jackson Prep, its students, its constituents, and its future. An authentic leader by any definition, Susan, in tandem with the school’s Board

of Trustees, has led Prep to an unparalleled position of excellence in all areas. From the building of the Guyton Science Center, the new Dining Commons, and the most recent state-of-the-art Centre for Arts and Leadership, to the extensive renovation of existing structures and grounds, to the infusion of technology infrastructure unmatched in any other area school, Susan stands most proud of her direction in creating Prep’s Global Leadership Institute. When Susan took the reins as Head of School, the Board of Trustees had been investigating the component of leadership through their strategic planning process. Both Susan and the Board agreed that an intentional, formalized vehicle for “teaching” students (grades 7–12) the essentials of leadership would enhance the Prep experience for ALL students. And so, the Global Leadership Institute was born, with the 2014 graduates being the first class to have gone through the entire leadership program. The impressive and distinctive

We talk about the fact that is was through his writing that he distinguished himself at Vanderbilt and about how his career has required him to write at every stage, including (already!) as head of school at Jackson Prep. And while Dr. Walton and this interviewer may have a slight bias towards writing and English, we agree that whether it is writing or chemistry, physics or French, students need more than ever to experience that sense of themselves as competent practitioners who know what is required to get the job done and to constantly improve.

Dr. Walton is clearly someone whose own educational journey gives him insight into the educational imperative our students confront: to gain skills at each level that will enable them to take advantage of each next opportunity. His recent experience at Lynn University has shown him how quickly the world of higher education is changing, particularly as employers increasingly demand to see proof not just of a degree completed but of independence and mastery achieved. One of his first priorities, he says, is to lead Prep’s faculty through the kinds of staff development experiences that will enable the school to maintain the reputation he first learned of as a young man in North Mississippi, a reputation for graduating the best prepared, most competent and confident young men and women anywhere in the state.

ason Walton is glad to be home. While Jackson might seem a long way from the home of his north Mississippi boyhood, it’s certainly closer than Boca Raton—and not just geographically. Home is where Caroline (11) and John William (5) can see their grandparents three times a month instead of three times a year. Home is also where Dr. Walton proudly embraces his family’s four-generation-long involvement in Mississippi schools and where he is eager to continue Jackson Prep’s legacy of educational leadership. He knew Prep by reputation, he explains, even as a young person, “certainly once I arrived on the Ole Miss campus and met Prep graduates.”

Prep’s reputation has informed his sense of the educational landscape of Mississippi for a long time.

Hoping to learn something about our new head of school as learner and not just an educator, I ask him to tell me about his most memorable moments of growth and transformation in the classroom. Having already heard him speak about his graduate school experience at Vanderbilt, I wondered how he had experienced school when he was the same age as the students at Jackson Prep. Much to my delight, he begins to tell me about high school English— tenth and twelfth grade—and about Mrs. Quimby and Mrs. Eckels. Those two ladies, he tells me, are known to generations of Hernando students, “and they gave me a love of writing and of reading.” He credits them with launching him as a writer who knows how to work on a

the gift of encouragement.” She and Jason married June 8, 1996, just out of college.

The proud mother of Caroline, an athletic elevenyear-old in 5th grade at First Presbyterian Day School, and John, a five-year-old who loves Star Wars and is in kindergarten at First Pres., Laurie got a Master’s degree in Educational Administration at Lynn. In Florida, she taught AP World History, and, though she has generally taught World History, the Civil Rights Era is a topic she longs to teach. She loves interacting with students and lets her teaching motto guide her lessons: “Tell a child; he will not listen; show a child, he will forget, but let a child participate and it’s a part of him forever.” Being a parent, she believes, has made her a better teacher: “you realize that every student you teach is somebody’s baby.”

She describes herself as an athlete who loves to read. Southern writers became her favorites when she lived in Florida because they gave her a taste of home. Her favorites include Willie Morris, John Grisham, Fannie Flagg, and Prep Alum, Kathryn Stockett.

For a fun read, Laurie recommends Melanie Schnakle, whose parenting anecdotes are laugh-out-loud fun.

“Tell me three things about you that people wouldn’t know,” I ask as we are about to wrap up our lunch. “I can drive a tractor; I used to play classical piano, and,” she says with eyes sparkling, “Jason may not want me to tell you this, but I had more stuff on my high school letterman’s jacket than he did.”

eeting Laurie Walton at Broad Street, I immediately think she’s the kind of woman I’d like to have as a friend. Warm, outgoing, quick to laugh, Laurie puts others at ease as she slips comfortably into conversation. A Mississippi girl who is finally back in the state she loves, she exudes enthusiasm about the changes she and her family are embracing.

They are renting a fully furnished house they love, her children made friends right away swimming at River Hills, and she already knows her way around Jackson.

A week after moving to Jackson, Laurie Walton feels more at home than she’s felt in years. “Here, everyone talks like me and is so welcoming,” she says. Having grown up in Nesbitt near Hernando, she is particularly grateful to be near family again “where my children can spend time with their grandparents and cousins.” Jason’s family lives in Madison, and her parents still live in her Nesbitt childhood home. She describes her father as her “real life hero,” a man who she says is the kindest, most generous person she knows and a tremendous influence on her Christian faith.

High school sweethearts, Laurie and Jason dated all through college. While he attended Ole Miss after high school, she attended Belhaven and studied secondary education, history, and English. “I always knew I wanted to be a high school teacher,” she says. “I loved History— my high school teacher Mrs. Iverson made the subject come alive. And Nelda Morgan, our school librarian, had

Denny Britt and Crisler Boone are Jackson Prep’s dynamic duo. Together, they have enabled a bold, aggressive transformation of Prep’s physical plant that has resulted in both a striking make-over of dated, existing facilities, as well as the construction of new, impressive structures.

He is quick to note, “We are not without needs.”

His list of areas to be transformed is seemingly unending, and he instantly conveys that none of this transformation would be possible without the input and support of the donors in the entire Prep Community.

Of course, transformation costs. Enter Crisler Boone.

Crisler’s gift for cultivating capital giving positioned Prep for a successful capital campaign, purposed primarily to raise the necessary funds for The Centre for Arts and Leadership. A natural leader, Crisler has held many leadership positions from president of the Junior League of Jackson to numerous church, community, and civic roles to professional and volunteer roles at Prep. Inspired and motivated by a challenge, this Prep graduate (Class of 1984) truly reflects the Prep education at work!

Guest speaker Cooper Manning spoke at the capital campaign kick-off, and Crisler recalls that his words resonated with her when he said, “These students are too talented to be performing in this facility [the original auditorium]. The collective talents of these students warrant a better facility.” A state-of-the-art venue that positively impacts students’ lives propelled Crisler throughout the capital campaign; however, her drive and

enny is energized by challenge and motivated by the belief that our facilities exist to enhance learning. He is incessantly looking for ways to update our facilities so they match the excellence that occurs in our classrooms. Knowing that the “aesthetics of a place affect one’s feelings, experience, and behavior,” he continually views the campus for ways to bring the Prep family a sense of place to match our academic brand. Patriot Avenue, Patriot Way, the Clock Tower, the Athletic Plaza, and the West Concession all work together to help achieve this worthy goal.

More than a year before ground was broken for The Centre, Denny Britt, Prep’s Chief Operating Officer, developed the matrix for the success of the Centre for Arts and Leadership. Empowered by the Board of Trustees and Susan Lindsay, he broadened the circle of input to include all constituencies. He transposed, reversed, extracted, and joined back together the input from this group. From the many small details to the essentially massive ones, his attention to each one and to the intent of the space enabled architects, engineers, and builders to bring into existence this space that will equip leaders and give stage to art for many years.

passion were also personal. She adds, “Personally, my children’s lives were transformed with the building of the Centre. Neither of my children played on athletic teams, so the Fine Arts became their teams. Through the Arts, each learned that others depended on them, and they depended on others.”

Crisler is quick to acknowledge and thank her capital campaign co-chairs Dudley Wooley and Mollie VanDevender. The journey strengthened her longexisting friendship with Julie and Dudley Wooley while

cementing a new friendship with Mollie VanDevender and raised more money than has ever been raised for a capital campaign in the history of Prep. The Centre will enhance the Prep experience for Prep students both now and for years to come, while also offering opportunities for the community at large.

Thank you, Crisler Boone and Denny Britt, for your tireless commitment to excellence without exception in the completion of The Centre for Arts and Leadership.

heart-healthy cooking demonstrations by Chef Luis Bruno who used all fresh products and seasonal produce. Petals and Pails of Ridgeland showcased an array of stunning flower and herb arrangements throughout the tour.

One half of the proceeds from Heart of the Home goes directly to provide additional funds for the Jackson Prep faculty through the teacher endowment fund. The remainder of the proceeds will be used for academic programs and school activities. “Members of PAT work diligently on Heart of the Home each year, and their volunteerism is essential to the success of the event,” said Trisha Richardson, 2014 Chair.

“We are also grateful for the sponsors, homeowners, and steering committee who make this event possible.”

eart of the Home, an annual community event presented by the Jackson Prep Parent and Teacher Association (PAT), was held April 10–11, 2014, and featured two beautiful area homes, with a focus on the heart of every home—the kitchen. The two-day event kicked off with a gala celebration on the evening of Thursday, April 10, at the festive Eastover home of Bill and Kathleen Geary. Attendees enjoyed live entertainment by Swing de France and a preview of the premier silent auction.

Fabulous hors d’oeuvres by Shapley’s and dessert selections by Fresh Cut Catering & Floral rounded out a magnificent evening.

The following day, the Heart of the Home Tour took place at the lovely Kirkwood home of Bob and Myriam Harris. Within the home, The Market Gallery and Gourmet Café offered food and specialty items for purchase, including beautiful, hand-made rose pottery by local artist Courtney Peters of Courtney Rae Designs. Guests observed

and so many other tunes that the whole assembly, like the detritus of a revolutionary’s barricade, reveled in its own excesses, piling well-known libretti on top of one another and gleefully firing forward. It was marvelous fun, and a dizzying spectacle. What might be lost in reach was made up in attention: Holbert and company lavished talent onto every foot of their 50x30 space.

The sight we ticketholders applauded, however, is merely one measure of its success; the students who spent hours under the spotlight tend to see their accomplishments as cooperation and perseverance. “It never ceases to amaze me,” says Nathan Brown, a theater veteran at Prep, “that we as a group of fifteen or so [major players] could work through so many different obstacles.” The bonds forged by cast members also struck Conner Ball, though his performance as the conflicted Marius required skills unlike those necessary to portray the cruel extortionist M. Thénardier. “It really impresses me to see how much talent and dedication we all put forward and how much emotion and care we put into it. We were determined.” When months of preparation culminated in three impressive performances, the musical received accolades all round, from soldout performances and standing ovations to former Board President Dudley Wooley’s judgment that it represents the best creative product the institution has yet achieved.

I asked Helen to summarize the whirlwind: “We all did something we loved, with people we loved, and everyone was on the same page. Les Mis was, by far, my best experience at Prep.”

Encore, I say.

Les Miserables presents musical challenges galore, the most formidable being its adroit combination of styles. Where else, outside of Pandora, can we hear lyrics of romantic yearning vying with patriotic anthems, all amid the crass razzmatazz of vaudeville? And where encounter— in which high school theater of the past year, the reporter asks—syncopated singing enough to tax the tonsils of even the professional songbird? The newly constructed Fortenberry Theatre played host to such an extravaganza last November, as students brought Broadway home to the Bible belt.

To wow crowds from the opening curtain, Diane Holbert and her principal actors commenced auditions in the spring of 2013 and rehearsals two months prior to school starting.

“Basically, the last two months of summer we were at Prep from 6 to 9 Monday through Thursday,” recalls Helen House (Éponine in the production).

Seniors worked individually with state-of-the-art software to learn their roles when they were not busy with blocking or troubleshooting scenes with their fellows. These sections matured into perfected acts before being matched with live orchestral accompaniment.

A welcome departure from Disney-inspired fare, Prep’s version of Les Mis—unlike the infamously capacious Hugo novel—narrows the story’s scope to a saint, a man, a woman, and a little girl. (For practical purposes, the School Edition subtitle means that Fantine dies of a bad cold.) Without a doubt, these four characters became the standout performances of the show, fueling “I Dreamed a Dream,” “One Day More,”

The annual Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

The wonderful thing about the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is the attention it brings to the creative arts. In high school it seems that the majority of the spotlight is directed towards sports and academics, yet artists and writers deserve the same recognition. It’s great to have a program that provides a national venue to recognize and reward creativity.

recognizes creative junior high and high school students from across the nation. The judging process begins within each region (the state of Mississippi is in a region of its own), and regional Gold Key winners are entered into the national competition. A three-day celebration is held in New York City for the National Medalists, culminating with a ceremony in Carnegie Hall. The award-winning works are showcased in Parsons’ New School for Design.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have propelled numerous creative people into their successful careers, including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, and John Updike.

Fine arts teachers at Jackson Prep encourage students to submit their art and writing into many competitions; the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is the most prestigious. Jackson Prep consistently has one of the longest lists of winners in the region, and Prep students have won 11 national awards over the past seven years.

Reveillon

2013-2014 J

ackson Prep’s Award Winning Showchoir, Reveillon, was named National Grand Champions at the FAME Orlando Showchoir Competition in April 2014. Reveillon also received awards for Best Vocals, Best Show Design, and Best Choreography. Senior Ty Higginbotham was awarded Best Male Soloist for the competition as well.

Reveillon was also awarded Grand Champion at the South Jones Invitational where they also captured all of the caption awards as well. Reveillon is nationally ranked among high school showchoirs.

This year’s competition show design was based on F. Scott Fitgerald’s Great Gatsby and was complete with period costuming, gorgeous sets, and specially arranged music and choreography to depict the era.

Reveillon is directed by Dianne Pittman Holbert (Class of 1974) who also designs the competition shows and creates the costume and set designs.

Jackson Prep’s award-winning literary and art journal, represents the remarkable depth and variety of creative talent found among the students of Jackson Preparatory School. Selections are made by the staff on the basis of creativity, style, and artistic merit. Under the leadership of faculty advisor Dr. Paul Smith, student members of the Earthwinds staff conduct the design, layout, and

Earthwinds is presented and passed out at the Earthwinds Coffeehouse, a school-wide event held every spring on Patriot Avenue (pictured). The Coffeehouse features live musical performances, Poetry Out Loud (works from Earthwinds are read out loud), ice cream, and coffee.

At Jackson Prep, community service is completely voluntary.

However, the school seeks to create an environment for students to explore their gifts and abilities as community servants. Our students come from homes of community leaders, and we know in the years to come this next generation can make an important difference in Jackson or wherever they settle after college. It is with this eye to the future that students are gently reminded to be good stewards of their gifts by giving back to their communities. Each year, senior high students choose a local philanthropic organization to be the annual community partner. This partner works with the Service Club to educate students and provide opportunities to volunteer. In return, our students regularly serve the partner all during the school year in order to gain depth with at least one organization per year. The partner for 2014-2015 is The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.

Projects for this year will include helping with Camp Kandu, Bacchus Ball, various health symposiums and fairs, education opportunities in the schools, collecting diabetic supplies, fundraisers, walks, runs, and raising awareness about diabetes. In addition to serving our partner, our students regularly fan out across the Metropolitan Jackson Area in various positions of mentoring, tutoring, coaching, and assisting in administrative needs of organizations.

Thank you, Jackson Prep, for believing in the importance of educational trips abroad and helping Prep students attend the Global Student Leaders Summit in Shanghai, China. What a wonderful addition to the Global Leadership Institute at Prep. The Summit is the perfect conference to challenge the best in our students and help them embrace a global perspective of the world.

The sights, sounds, smells, and scenes of China have impacted all of our lives in different ways. The Summit was the experience of a lifetime for our students. Three of our students—William Townsend, Anna Frances Robinson, and Cille Taylor (pictured)—were selected as International Journalist Interns and actually participated in a Summit press conference. All of our students participated in design thinking idea sessions. The finale Innovative Village at the Summit, like a science fair on steroids, displayed the work and ideas our students created to help a needy part of the world at large. Our students learned how to work collaboratively to accomplish a goal and live unselfishly to make the global world a better place.

Mission accomplished. We are changed— thinking more global and living more purposefully.

he educational trip to China expanded our world view, increased our love for America, broadened our perspective of global concerns in the world, and challenged us to be sincerely respectful and appreciative of other cultures. No doubt this experience changed us all in some way. Anthony Bourdain says, “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts; it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay.

The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body.

You take something with you…Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”

Some gained a deeper understanding of the world and that we are all the same, no matter the background, in some ways. Others explored the very diverse views of others and came away with stronger personal values coupled with an authentic desire to listen and respect all peoples from all cultures. I came home with a very grateful heart for Jackson Prep and the many opportunities our school gives students to grow and mature through studies, activities, and travel abroad.

MISSISSIPPI to malawi

ast year, my mom emailed me a photo of an unexpected piece of nostalgia she had found as she purged our attic. An old autobiographical poster that I had made for Mrs. Freundt’s eleventh grade AP American Literature class had resurfaced, and I chuckled as I read the way I had described my personality, my likes, and my dislikes to my classmates, taking note of all the the ways that I have changed in the six years since I made that poster. But the most striking thing about that poster was my last sentence in the “About Me” section: “I want to live in Africa more than anything in the world.”

Eleventh grade me knew next to nothing about Africa—I

had certainly never been there. I had shaky knowledge of its geography, and my awareness of the political and economic situations in African countries was superficial at best. It was a bold statement for a naive eleventh grader with no real-world experience. But today, as I prepare to leave for my second year as a teacher in Malawi, Africa, I am amazed that my unfounded attraction to the continent was in fact the root of an enduring passion and commitment to Africa.

I entered Prep as a socially-awkward seventh grader with a propensity for reading and an overwhelming desire to blend in. I was decidedly uninterested in

utterly transformational. I saw the mountains of Cape Town, petted cheetahs, dove with Great White Sharks, walked with lions, rode elephants, and bungee jumped over Victoria Falls. It was the trip of a lifetime, and after six weeks in Africa, I was already aching to return. But it was not the spectacular experiences that drew me back. Instead, I was captivated by the rich and diverse cultures, troubled by the pervasive and extreme poverty, and intrigued by the wide array of political and economic structures throughout the continent. I returned hungry for more knowledge, so I enrolled in classes and read books to broaden my understanding of the place I had fallen in love with. As I learned more, I realized how vast my misperceptions had been and how little I still knew, which did nothing but strengthen my resolve to return as soon as possible.

Three years later, on my 21st birthday, I did return.

I graduated a year early, and after spending my final semester at Oxford University in England, I flew straight to Lilongwe, Malawi—a tiny country in Southeast Africa.

My grand plan to work at the U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe had fallen through, but Paul and Laura Chinchen had invited me to be a volunteer at their mission: African Bible College. For three months, I worked in the preschool, television station, and pharmacy, all of which were part of the organization. Before I knew it, my three month commitment had turned into a year, and now that year commitment has turned into a two-year commitment.

I’m teaching high school at ABC Christian Academy, an international school with students from over 20

excelling academically until Mrs. Cazier’s challenging ninth grade Physical Science class, and although my scientific inclinations faded rapidly in the following years, her encouragement proved crucial to my academic success. Later, Mr. Hughes made history fascinating as he integrated historical precedents with current political and economic trends, emphasizing the importance of knowing what is going on in the world. Mrs. McKibben explained the ins and outs of government and showed me the importance of political science, my future college major. And I cannot overstate the significance of Mrs. Freundt letting me know that my thoughts, ideas, and opinions are worth expressing and teaching me to write with clarity and precision. These teachers (and so many others) taught me more than their subjects: they instilled in me an insatiable appetite for learning, for experiencing, and for understanding that has not waned in the years following my graduation.

My transition to the University of Georgia was tumultuous, and I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people. I never felt unprepared for my classes, which I feel is a testament to Prep’s excellent college preparation, yet I thought myself incapable of standing out among so many other bright minds, so I allowed myself to become anonymous. Still, I was anxious to reach for richer experiences despite my stagnation, and I applied for a study abroad program in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The summer after my freshman year, I traveled with 20 UGA students and two UGA professors to the continent that had fascinated me for so long, and the experience was

The Jackson Prep College Counseling and Alumni Offices coordinate the Career Connection Summer Internship Program. The program is designed for rising seniors and provides interns with an unforgettable experience that will help them explore and develop specific career interests.

The Jackson Prep Technology Department offered an internship as a part of this program, and Parker McGowan became our first Jackson Prep Technology Intern.

Our goal was to utilize Parker’s skills in the technology department and also to enable him to see the full scope of the technology department at Jackson Prep.

He spent a day with me viewing the infrastructure of Jackson Prep and “seeing” how all of it works together. Mr. Gross gave the executive tour of the technology in the Centre for Arts and Leadership. Parker rolled up his sleeves and assisted Mrs. Noe with the set up of new computers in the Junior High Computer Lab, the Language Lab in the Senior High, and the Hederman Media Center Computer

Lab. He had a front row seat in the troubleshooting sessions with our partners at Pileum and CSpireFiber.

We interviewed Sandy Turnage, Chief Operating Officer at Pileum Corporation, and toured their data center.

However, by far, his favorite activity was taking the drone out with Coach Fryant.

It is hard to beat flying a drone!

For me, the highlight was the round table discussion with Parker at the end of the week. His simple suggestions about navigation changes on the Prep website to his more complex questions relating to filtering provided an invaluable exchange. Unlike the other internships, the technology internship at Jackson Prep offers the student the opportunity to improve the Prep experience for their classmates. I am appreciative of Parker’s keen insight and inquisitiveness, and I look forward to the student technology organization he will help us coordinate. Which student will take the leadership role in this new organization next year? Stay tuned to see who steps forward!

The Writer’s Block Students Coaching Students

junior Olivia Flynt first visited the Writer’s Block last year, she felt as if she had stepped into something totally unknown. “I was scared to show them my paper, because I thought they would tell me it was just bad,” she says as she recounts her experience. “I assumed the writing center was full of snobby English people.” After her session with a writing coach, however, Olivia’s fear of “snobs” and judgment vanished. “I could tell you weren’t snobs at all.

Everyone was really encouraging.”

Olivia says the Writer’s Block helped her became more comfortable seeking help from her peers. Working with the student coaches helped her learn how to review her own writing. Olivia explains, “I liked the sense that I was improving. I now know what to look for, and I know how to look for it.” Her experience illustrates why those who staff The Writer’s Block are called coaches instead of tutors. Their job is not to make a paper better but to help each student become better at writing. Olivia says she plans to visit the writing center again in the coming school year and recommends other students do the same.

As a coach, I found that helping others plan and review their work reminded me constantly of how to improve my own writing. The thought of coaching someone I didn’t know made me incredibly anxious, but I feel more comfortable now talking and working with a wide variety of people instead of just my close friends. A writing conference can be a learning experience for the student coach as well as the student client.

ackson Prep is all about identifying student needs and meeting those needs with the appropriate resources. In the case of the writing center that began operating in the Fall of 2013, the resource had been there all along.

The Writer’s Block, staffed by students and sponsored

by Dr. Lisa Whitney, has completed its first year, helping students of all grade levels improve their essays and other written assignments. The first year taught us all a lot about the role that a writing center can play at Prep, and 2014–2015 promises to offer even more students help with the writing process.

Initially, the Writer’s Block operated out of Dr. Whitney’s room. However, a surge of students visiting right before Christmas led us to move to a larger room that was vacant during activity period and homeroom, the Block’s main operating time. This room is now the permanent home of the Writer’s Block. Students are welcome to come for assistance at any stage of the writing process, with or without the prompting of a teacher.

The writing coaches from the past year had different strengths. Some were AP students who were very comfortable helping students improve their literary analysis essays, while others were in college prep English classes and excelled in the structure and planning of research papers.

Some were terrific at the mechanics of writing; others specialized in organization and logical development.

Coaches and customers alike discovered that often the biggest obstacle was apprehension. When rising

distance learning technology. Prep students will also take several field trips to the campuses to view the research facilities and collaborate with the faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students on the college campuses. Marsha Hobbs was appointed as an adjunct professor at Ole Miss and teaches this course.

As part of the expanded engineering curriculum, an 8th grade semester elective will also be offered: Engineering Design. This elective will teach the fundamentals of robotics and programming within a project based, exploratory, elective course. With this course, students will have the opportunity to explore their aptitude and interest in this field before they enter high school. As students express interest, the goal is to offer expanded engineering opportunities in the early high school years.

This course gives Prep students many new learning opportunities and the opportunity to earn 4 hours of college credit through a dual credit platform with Ole Miss. A portion of the course will teach Engineering Graphics with a hybrid course, combining an Ole Miss online course with traditional Prep classroom teaching.

The course is offered to Ole Miss students as an online course, but Prep students have the opportunity to learn how to handle online courses within a mostly traditional high school classroom setting. The second portion of the course will explore engineering careers, investigating both the science and the rewards of the engineering disciplines. Ole Miss and Jackson State faculty will give weekly lectures and communicate with the class through

The fight song is sung (only bus riders are allowed to know the words) and a cheer for seniors who have made the trip for five consecutive years erupts. There is a quick stop at the golden parabolas for breakfast, and then we travel the final miles to Columbus. Name tags are distributed, team competition names are announced, and potpourri and innerschool captains are named. When the last turn into downtown Columbus is made, everyone’s inner geek is ready to cipher.

When asked about her experiences with the mathematics team, Kaitlyn Myers, Class of 2014, said, “There’s an overwhelming sense of pride and tradition for MSMS.From running across the street to McAlister’s to taking home the trophy for yet another year, the MSMS competition always shows just how awesome the Prep mathletes continue to be. I’ve loved being a part of the MSMS, Mu Alpha Theta, and MC teams because of the passion that my fellow Prep students have. Everyone involved is incredibly competitive, but they also just love math. I’ve loved making friends in our nerdy little community.” For Prep students, MSMS is only one of several competitive opportunities. Each is equally as fun and has a similar set of traditions though not quite the ingrained, longstanding spirit as MSMS. The Mississippi College Science and Mathematics Tournament, is a one-day tournament where twelve students take a written mathematics test and a written science test in biology, chemistry, or physics. From the twelve, a group of four students is selected to work together in a quiz bowl style competition in the afternoon. Students are invited to participate based on recommendations from both their mathematics teachers and their science teachers. Mu Alpha Theta State convention is a two-day event with math tests, rounds of ciphering, math scrapbook competitions, a chalk talk, and even a dance competition.

During the 2013–2014 school year, Jackson Prep students won first place at both the MSMS and MC competitions, and earned second place at the Mu Alpha Theta state convention. This year, our math students will compete in Math Counts, ALA-LA-MISS, MSMS, MC and Mu Alpha Theta. Our students are always ready for an exciting math adventure. Watch for the list. You never know who will make it on the bus.

ince coming to Prep, I have grown to deeply appreciate how Prep provides many opportunities for students to follow their passions. I personally have always had a strong interest in math and science, and Prep’s rigorous curriculum has allowed me to pursue my interests while challenging myself. Prep offers a large variety of AP math and science courses, all of which are taught by extremely knowledgeable and supportive teachers. This year I am taking AP Physics C, AP Chemistry and AP Calculus BC. Being able to take three math and science classes simultaneously was a unique opportunity that Prep offered. These classes will play a crucial role in preparing me for a future career in the STEM field.

Another highlight of Prep is the teachers, who genuinely care about their students and enjoy enriching students’ minds. I never cease to be amazed by how much time and energy teachers choose to take out of their busy schedules to give extra help or bond with their students.

My Prep experience has been nothing short of wonderful, and I look forward to next year’s classes and teachers.

Early in the Administration of President George W. Bush, Loper served as a Deputy Associate Director for the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Loper received his B.A. from Villanova University and an M.B.A. from the George Washington University.

He serves as an adjunct professor at Villanova and is a Board Member of the University’s Center for Marketing and Public Policy Research. In addition, he serves as a Senior Advisor to the Bipartisan Policy Center and on the Board of Directors for the Congressional Institute.

He and his wife, Ginger, live in Arlington, Virginia, with their three daughters, Grace (8), Kate (6), and Sarah Clayton (4).

Brett Loper (1991) is named 2013-2014 Alumnus of the Year Brett Loper is Senior Vice President, Government Affairs, for American Express. In that role, he coordinates the company’s engagement strategy with Congress, the White House, federal agencies, and state and local governments.

Before joining American Express, he held the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner (R-OH). In that role, he led a team of ten foreign and domestic policy experts and served as chief legislative strategist to the Speaker.

Loper has served in a variety of capacities in the White House and the Congress. This includes serving as the Republican Staff Director for the House Committee on Ways and Means, whose legislative jurisdiction includes

ABC saw the treasure they had in this Prep grad and also put her talents to work as a swim coach, the senior class sponsor, and more. When her former classmates joined her in Africa, Sydney was elated to share her experiences and show them a part of the world in which Prep can make a difference. Together the six Prep grads worked in a mobile medical clinic, filled prescriptions, led a traveling VBS and puppet show, worked on a roofing project in the villages, and participated in ABC’s college graduation, where 80 nationals walked in front of an audience of more than 1,500 people.

Class of 2010—they’re out to change their world This special 2010 class of 98 graduates is putting themselves on the global map in a big way. This past May, after graduating from four major universities, six Prep classmates reunited in Malawi, Africa, to work with fellow graduates—both young and old—on their ABCs: African Bible College, that is. Betsy Baird (Ole Miss), Elliot Browning (Auburn), Sanford Moore (Ole Miss), Kris Roberts (SMU), and Julia Wright (Samford) joined Sydney Stringer (Georgia) in a 10-day mission blitz that affected another college campus—this time thousands of miles across the ocean—three villages and countless lives. They were joined by their mission team from First Presbyterian Church of Jackson including: Russell Roberts (2018), Forrest Smith (2018), Ashley Chinchen Cozzolino (2007), Matt Glover (2005), Susan McGee Smith (1983), Jimmy Moore (1981), and Jane Snyder Stringer (1981).

Sydney was the first of the young Prep group to head to Malawi. After completing her studies at Georgia in just three years, she decided to give a year of service to ABC as a high school English teacher after graduating.

Jaclyn Bethany (2007) is hitting it big Jaclyn Bethany just directed and starred in her first offBroadway show with 17 professional actors. She received press on Playbill, Broadwayworld, Broadway.com, and Showtime. The show was sold out and attended by top industry professionals. She played Alma in Summer and Smoke opposite James McCune (Shameless, Homeland, Walking Dead). Jaclyn also appears in Oscar nominee Tate Taylor’s new film Get on Up and was featured in USA Today and Associated Press.

Jaclyn founded a theatre/production company and is working on developing Chekhov’s Three Sisters for stage and screen. Rae Ann Lawrence (2009) joins Waggoner Engineering

Kelsey Jones (2012) named Mississippi State University 2014 Junior Homecoming Maid

Rae Ann joined Waggoner Engineering, a fullservice economic development, project management and engineering firm based in Jackson, Mississippi, as an engineering intern in its Civil, Structural, and Aviation division. Lawrence most recently served as a research assistant for the Mississippi State University (MSU) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

She received her undergraduate degree in civil and environmental engineering in 2013 from MSU, where she is also earning her master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering with an expected graduation date of December 2014.

Kelsey is majoring in Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion and is scheduled to graduate in May 2016. She is the daughter of Nancy and Van (1979) Jones. While at Mississippi State University she has been involved in the following: Student Association Freshman Council, Student Association Late night Events Committee, Student Association Athletic Affairs Committee, Wakeboard and Waterski Club, YoungLife Club, Student Dietetic Association Committee, Student Dietetic Association Assistant Secretary, Delta Gamma Vice President of Panhellenic, Delta Gamma Sorority, and University of Mississippi Medical Center Health Career Development Program.

Stefanie Black Kyser (1985) wins mountain bike national title

Murray Miller (2011) named Ole Miss 2014 Homecoming Queen

Stefanie Black Kyser competed in the United States Singlespeed 24-Hour Mountain Bike Championships in June and won the National title. Congratulations, Stefanie!

Murray is a senior double majoring in International Studies and Spanish. She is the daughter of Cathy and Craig Miller. A member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, and the Croft Institute for International Studies, Murray is also President of Chi Omega sorority.

She has served on the Columns Society, The Cardinal Club, and the Student Alumni Council, as well as several community service organizations. She is a member of the leadership honoraries Omicron Delta Kappa, Lambda Sigma, Rho Lambda, Mortar Board, as well as several academic honoraries. After she completes her coursework in Oxford, she plans on continuing her studies in Buenos Aries, Argentina.

aintaining the environment that defines Jackson Prep and keeping it strong for the future takes significant resources. Capital campaigns are special and intensive fundraising efforts directed at achieving specific goals within a specified period of time. The following pages list the names of those who have supported Transforming Prep – Celebrating Arts and Leadership. The highlights of this campaign are the construction of the Centre for Arts and Leadership, the creation of Patriot Way and the clock tower, renovation of four classrooms in the Senior High Building into six classrooms, two collaboration rooms, and the Technology Hub, the Fab Lab and design classroom, and improvements to the athletic complex, including the west side concession stand.

We want to complete all the elements of Transforming Prep and put The Finishing Touch on the campus. These projects include renovation of the counseling suite in the

Senior High Building, relocation of the pottery studio and kiln, renovation of the area under the home side stands, including restrooms, and most visibly, significant improvements to the front facades of both the Junior High and Senior High Buildings.
