Professor Alf Ross and his family, picture from the family’s personal archive.

Finn Juhl Unique ‘Ross’ Coffee Table Produced by Niels Vodder 1948 Designed and executed in 1948 Pained tubular steel, teak ‘shoes’, teak, brass Provenance: Professor Alf Ross; Thence by descent in the family Finn Juhl designed the furniture for the home of Alf Ross. Only this very table made by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder exists. The black-and-white photo shows Alf Ross and family around the table, with the previous owner is sitting on his lap. The table is part of a series of tables from around 1945–1950 where Finn Juhl most clearly obliterates the distinction between function and artistic expression. He uses different materials, each of which point to their functional purpose, while at the same time transforming it to a sculpture due to their different colours and shapes. The ¨Ross¨ table with the straight lines on the frame, circle motif on the organic top, balancing on the rounded teak “shoes”, is significantly inspired by the Swiss artist Sophie Tauber-Arp and her works and thoughts on balance and movement. It is furniture art in the most literal sense. The recess in the brass plate is presumably, similar to Finn Juhl’s table from 1945, intended to accommodate the pewter vase with glass lid (Model A1432) that Björn Trägårdh designed for Firma Svenskt Tenn in 1930.

Gerrit Rietveld ‘Elling’ Cabinet Produced by G.A. van de Groenekan 1971 Lacquered beech With manufacturer’s paper label to underside The original invoice from ‘Het Goede Meubel’ is included Provenance: Acquired directly from ‘Het Goede Meubel’, Utrecht in 1971 Gerrit Rietveld designed the first Elling cabinet in 1919. The original example, executed in oak, was acquired by architect Piet Elling and later destroyed in a fire. In 1951, cabinetmaker G.A. van de Groenekan produced a second Elling cabinet under Rietveld’s supervision for an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Subsequently, van de Groenekan produced a small number of made-to-order Elling cabinets, including this example.

Poul Henningsen Unique Dining Table Excecuted by a Danish cabinetmaker circa 1930 Pine, lacquered beech Provenance: Gifted by Poul Henningsen to his close friends Elias Bredsdorff and Marlie Brande in the 1930s; Hence by descent to their son, Jan Bredsdorff; Later gifted to his friend, Ghita Nørby; Hence by descent to her son, Giacomo Campeotto.

The idea behind the hexagonal and three-legged design was that several tables could be placed next to each other, without the table legs getting in the way of the people seated at the tables. Poul Henningsen designed this one table and had it produced by a cabinetmaker with the intention of putting it into serial production. This never happened though, and this is thus the only piece ever made.

Flemming Lassen Rare ‘Hussar’ Easy Chair Produced by A.J. Iversen circa 1935 Hind legs of stained elm, original steel front castors Upholstered in hand woven textile by Hanne Vedel First exhibited at the Danish Cabinetmaker’s Guild exhibition, 13-29 September, 1935. A very rare model, the Hussar armchair is recognised as the precursor or ‘prototype’ to Flemming Lassen’s ubiquitous ‘Tired Man’ chair, unveiled at the Danish Cabinetmaker’s Guild Exhibition the following year.

Poul Henningsen ‘House of the Future’ Ceiling Lamp Produced by Louis Poulsen 1959 Florescent painted metal shades Designed in 1959 exclusively for ‘The House of the Day after Tomorrow’ exhibition, with only around 15 lamps ever produced. Reminiscent of the Artichoke Lamp in the Langelinie Pavilion. Lighting engineering based on color concept, based on the observation that the red end of the light spectrum reproduced texture better than the colder color rays.

Archibald Knox Unique Cabinet 1901 Oak, brass, glass, paper Provenance: Gifted by Archibald Knox to Alfred James Collister R.B.A. A.R.C.A.; Thence by descent.

Exhibited: ‘Archibald Knox: The Man behind the Art’, exhibition catalogue, Manx Museum Winter Exhibition, 1999, number 39 (top part only) Whilst the metalwork Knox designed for Liberty & Co. is relatively commonplace, furniture designed by him is extremely rare. This sideboard was given as a wedding present by Archibald Knox to Alfred James Collister and Gertrude Beatrice Ward, 24th July 1901, where Knox was Collister’s best man.

Knox had met Collister at Art School and left the Isle of Man to join him in 1897 as a part-time assistant teacher at the new Redhill School of Art in Surrey. He soon became a regular designer for the ‘Silver Studios’ in Hammersmith, an agency which provided anonymous designs to many firms, including Liberty & Co. with which Knox is so famously associated. Around 1899 Knox returned to Man and made hundreds of designs over the next few years which were produced in silver and pewter, before returning to Kingston Art School as Design Master.

Of the few known furniture pieces, an oak clock case with stylistic affinities is illustrated in Stephen Martin (op.cit., p. 238).

Of more interest is the contemporary photograph of a bureau (illustrated in op. cit., p. 108), also part of the wedding gift given to Collister. Martin notes the bureau, and so presumable the current lot, was made in the Isle of Man by craftsmen at the Ballanard Brick, Tile and Terra-Cotta Works, Ballanard Road, Douglas, where one of the principals, a Mr W. J. Ashburner, was also a close friend of Knox.

Alvar Aalto Prototype Ceiling Lamp Produced by Valaistustyö 1958 White painted metal and brass Designed as a prototype for the eventual ceiling lamp installed in the home of art dealer Louis Carré. Aalto designed the entire home and its interior for Carré and was his only French commission.

Provenance: Viljo Hirvonen. Founder in 1952 of Valaistustyö Ky, the company responsible for the manufacture of Aalto’s metal work including all of his early production lighting pieces.

Alvar Aalto Prototype Table Produced by Artek circa 1950 Birch, painted metal One of two prototype tables designed for Maison Carrée, Aalto’s sole architectural project in France. The other example of the model was in use at Aalto’s home in Munkkiniemi, Helsinki. It is retained in the permanent collection of the Aalto Museum, Jyväskylä, Finland.
