NEWS Emirates Reports Its Most Profitable Year In History Emirates has bounced back from the pandemic in style, posting a record-breaking AED 10.6 billion ($2.9 billion) profit in the financial year ending March 31st, 2023. This is the airline's highest-ever profit, beating even its pre-pandemic figures. The results show quite the turnaround from the AED 3.9 billion ($1.1 billion) loss reported for 2021-22. Despite operating costs increasing by 57% year-on-year, such an impressive profit was achieved thanks to total revenue of AED 107.4 billion ($29 billion) - up 81% from the AED 58.8 billion ($16 billion) recorded in 2021-22.

$3 billion in profit for the Emirates Group The Emirates Group reported an overall profit of AED 10.9 billion ($3 billion), boosted by profits of AED 331 million ($90 million) from its ground handling division, dnata. 16% of the group's revenue came from Emirates SkyCargo. Thanks to its strong performance and high revenue, the Emirates Group was also able to repay AED 3 billion ($817 million) of its debt accrued throughout the pandemic. The CEO of Emirates, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, celebrated its achievements, saying,

"I’m proud of the Emirates Group’s performance for 2022-23, and our contribution to the restoration of air transport and tourism across the markets we serve, including Dubai’s astounding 97% year-on-year growth in international visitors for 2022. The Group is the biggest player in the UAE’s aviation sector, which supports over 770,000 jobs and generates an estimated contribution to GDP of over US$ 47 billion (AED 172.5 billion). With our growth plans, and in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, we expect to significantly increase our contribution to the UAE’s GDP over the next decade through direct and indirect employment, supply chain spending, tourism spend, and trade and commerce benefits from the movement of cargo."

NEWS FAA Issues Ground Stop At Denver International Airport Because Of Inclement Weather Severe weather across much of the Denver, Colorado, area caused significant delays at the Denver International Airport (DIA). Inbound flights experienced the majority of the delays. As of 5 pm local time, there were 597 flights delayed and over 125 flights canceled. The Federal Aviation Association (FAA) issued a ground stop at the airport as severe weather entered the area. The federal hold that delayed all inbound flights to Denver was eventually lifted in the early afternoon. However, the FAA also warned that delays would last throughout the day as various thunderstorms would continue to pass through the Denver area.

The weather is expected to continue into the evening The delays are expected to continue until after the ground stop expires. Ashley Forest, the spokesperson for Denver International Airport, spoke about the delays, saying,

"What we'll see is potentially more delays around 6 p.m. Safety is the single most important aspect of running an airport. We rely on training and systems in place, as well as passenger cooperation, to minimize impacts to our passengers."

Forest also mentioned that there was no damage reported to the airport or any aircraft within the airport but that airport officials on the ground would be ready to respond if necessary.

NEWS Airbus Confirms Q1 2023 Deliveries Drop From 2022 As Simple Flying reported on Sunday, Airbus has gotten off to a rocky start toward its 2023 delivery goal of 720 aircraft. In the first quarter of this year, it delivered 127 aircraft, which is 9% below the same period last year. Airbus released its March Orders and Deliveries Report today, which revealed it booked orders for 20 aircraft and delivered 61 in March. The March deliveries went to 37 customers and included five A220-300s, 26 A320neos, 25 A321neos, three A330-900s, and two A350-900s.

The production rate is growing monthly For the first quarter Airbus delivered 10 A220-300s, two A319neos, 45 A320neos, 59 A321neos, one A330-200, five A330-900s and five A350-900s. In January, there were 20 aircraft delivered, and this was followed by 46 in February, so the curve is moving up the scale after the very slow start to the year. The widebody side of the ledger is of some concern, with just 11 delivered in the first quarter, split almost evenly between the A330 and A350. The A330-200 went to Airbus Defence and Space with its future to be part of the NATO fleet. Two of the A330neos went to Virgin Atlantic via Air Lease Corporation, one to Delta Air Lines, and two to Condor, one of those via CIT Leasing. Singapore Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and Turkish Airlines each received one A350-900, while Starlux Airlines had one via Air Lease Corporation and the other directly from Airbus. In Q1, Airbus received net orders for 142 aircraft, including 12 A220-300s, one A319neo, 27 A320neos, 60 A321neos, four A350Fs, five A350-900s, and 33 A350-1000s. The Airbus March report shows it received orders for 156 aircraft in Q1, but there were 14 cancelations, which is why the net figure is 142. In the Q1 book are orders from Qatar Airways for 50 A321neos and 23 A350-1000s, representing just over half of the net orders for the quarter, readded after a dispute was wound up between the airline and Airbus.

NEWS Boeing Plans To Ramp Up 737 MAX Production By End Of Year During an earnings call today, Boeing said that despite problems with 737 MAX production, it expects to ramp up to a rate of 38 aircraft per month by the end of the year. The recent issues discovered with the brackets that mount the tails to the fuselages should only affect the manufacturer's Q2 deliveries.

Sharing a positive outlook Boeing has maintained its positive outlook for free cash flow and aircraft deliveries, stating it expects to generate $3-$5 billion in cash flow and increase monthly 737 MAX production to 38 by the end of 2023. Less than two weeks ago, Boeing announced it had discovered a problem with the brackets used to attach tails to fuselages. Nevertheless, the planemaker is confident it can maintain its delivery target of 400-450 737 MAX aircraft in 2023.

Inside the numbers Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines added 1,338 employees, making it the leading passenger carrier in February. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines hired 1,134 workers, and Chicago-based United Airlines welcomed 1,082 new hires. For cargo carriers, 277,999 workers were employed in February 2023, which was 35% of the industry total, according to the DOT. Despite those numbers, the airlines also lost 1,372 employees during the same month, with FedEx, the leading air cargo employer, decreasing its workforce by 1,582 jobs.

NEWS France Begins Short Haul Flight Ban Where Trains Are Suitable From today May 24,2023 , you can no longer take a French domestic flight lasting less than 150 minutes where a suitable alternative rail service exists. The ban comes into force as the country drives forward on its pledge to offer more sustainable domestic travel solutions and reduce carbon emissions.

Take the train, not the plane France's much-heralded ban on short-haul domestic flights finally came into force at midnight earlier today. Under the new legislation ratified by a French government decree, any journey of less than two-and-a-half hours' duration that rail services can undertake cannot be taken as a flight. As an additional restriction as part of the new laws, France is also cracking down on using private jets for short journeys to make transport greener and fairer for the entire population. The new legislation comes into force two years after lawmakers had voted to end routes where the same journey could be made by train in under two-and-a-half hours. The ban effectively rules out passenger air travel between Paris and the French cities of Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux. However, connecting flights are unaffected by the new laws. As French domestic rail services improve, more routes could be added to the banned list. These could include routes between Paris, Lyon, and Rennes. These particular routes don't currently meet the criteria for the ban because trains from these cities to the two main airports in Paris, Charles De Gaulle (CDG) to the north of the city and Orly (ORY) to the south, don't allow passengers to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening. It is noteworthy, however, that the cutoff point of two hours and 30 minutes is shy of the roughly three hours it takes to travel from Paris to the major Mediterranean port city of Marseille by high-speed rail - a move that has been described as "deliberate and calculated" by critics of the new law, calling the new law a "symbolic ban" only.

Train services must meet certain conditions The new law specifies that train services on the same route must be "frequent, timely, and well-connected" enough to meet the needs of passengers who would otherwise have traveled by air. Equally, the alternative rail services must absorb the increased passenger numbers displaced from flying on the domestic routes involved.
