United Airlines Adds 40% More Flights To Australia &

New Zealand Next Winter

United Airlines will introduce the most extensive South Pacific network expansion in aviation history to and from the continental US.

Within this, the Star Alliance carrier is introducing the first non-stop flight between San Francisco and Christchurch, New Zealand Once launched, the route will make United Airlines the only carrier directly connecting the US and the South Island of New Zealand

The airline is also increasing frequencies on several vital routes and introducing its largest airplanes on flights to Australia. United Airlines will operate 66 flights from the US to Australia and New Zealand next northern winter versus last year, an increase of almost 40%.

Significant South Pacific expansion

The carrier is adding new direct flights from Los Angeles International Airport to Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia, and Auckland, an airport that is undergoing a significant expansion. United Airlines is increasing service to the region from its hub in San Francisco with daily flights to Brisbane, twice daily flights to Sydney, and scheduling larger aircraft on its Melbourne service

The new flights will capitalize on United's relationships with Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia Travelers from the US can enjoy additional one-stop connections from the newly introduced links to more than 50 destinations in the region Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, shared his excitement to be part of this historic launch:

"This past winter, United enhanced our network and became the largest carrier to the South Pacific region. Now, this upcoming winter, we will expand even further.

"Our strong partnerships with Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia provide unparalleled connectivity, and with our historic expansion across five destinations in New Zealand and Australia, United is the clear choice for customers' travel to the region."

Airport Of The Month: Los Angeles International

Continuing our brand-new feature for 2023 - Airport Of The Month - Simple Flying is delighted to reveal our nominated airport for April. Each month, we will celebrate an airport that has gone above and beyond in providing exceptional passenger experience and is investing to make our time spent in transit even better in the future.

As one of the busiest airports in the USA, Los Angeles has been investing heavily in improving the passenger experience. A massive $30 billion has been allocated to improvement works, some of which are completed, with many more to come With the Olympic Games coming in 2028, Los Angeles hopes to have everything locked down and tip-top in time for the big event, and it's turning it into just about a whole new airport.

The automated people mover, set to complete in 2024, will make moving between terminals easier. A consolidated rental car facility will open around the same time, and is set to be the largest vehicle rental hub in the world For those driving themselves, a smart parking system will be implemented across all seven parking structures by the end of 2023, allowing people to reserve spaces in advance instead of driving around looking for somewhere to park.

Inside the terminals, biometric boarding has been implemented at Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) and is currently under consideration for a wider rollout. Common areas are being upgraded, and the newly opened West Gates at TBIT has added more capacity for airlines.

Terminals 2 and 3 are being consolidated into a major Delta hub, and work is starting on a similar project to consolidate Terminals 4 and 5 Terminal 6 is the subject of a major Alaska Airlines update, and various other concourses and facilities are either being expanded or improved. Added to all this, a brand new 1.4 million square foot building is in the design process, and will eventually form the brand new Terminal 9 for the airport. Clearly, LAX is keen to shake off its image of being congested and aging with one of the most extensive makeovers ever seen in airport history. Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, LAWA, told Simple Flying,

US Airlines Added Over 2,500 Jobs In February

On Monday, the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that the nation’s airline industry added nearly 2,700 jobs in February 2023, representing a significant rebound from the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the jobs, the number of current airline employees totaled more than 700,000

The increase is part of an upward trend in employment numbers since February 2021 The DOT also included calculations of full-time equivalents, which also seemed to increase since pandemic restrictions eased.

Hundreds of thousands of workers

Employment among passenger and cargo airlines in February increased to 790,657 workers, according to the DOT That result is 2,687 or 0.34% more workers than the previous month, which totaled 787,970. It is 59,661 or 8.16% more compared to February 2019, in which only 730,996 people worked at the airlines

508,450 employees across all passenger airlines with scheduled service were employed in February 2023, representing 65% of the industry-wide total. In the same month, 4,696 new workers were hired at passenger airlines, the 22nd consecutive month of job growth dating back to May 2021.

Inside the numbers

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines added 1,338 employees, making it the leading passenger carrier in February. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines hired 1,134 workers, and Chicago-based United Airlines welcomed 1,082 new hires

For cargo carriers, 277,999 workers were employed in February 2023, which was 35% of the industry total, according to the DOT. Despite those numbers, the airlines also lost 1,372 employees during the same month, with FedEx, the leading air cargo employer, decreasing its workforce by 1,582 jobs.

United Airlines Enlists Oscar The Grouch For Sustainability Promotion Campaign

It is no secret that the airline industry has a PR problem regarding sustainability In surveys, people repeat the belief that air transport is behind over 10% of global CO2 emissions The actual figure, as you, informed and avid readers of Simple Flying, are aware, sits between 2 and 3% (not that this is insignificant). Of course, with the predicted growth trajectory of the industry, this share will increase, especially as other sectors move quicker towards decarbonization.

Even as airlines are getting a move on with interim targets and long-term aspirational goals to create actual change, they must also find ways creative ways of communicating their efforts. In all honesty, while new hydrogen plane shapes may induce a particular sci-fi enthusiasm, the general flying public may find it difficult to get excited about "drop-in fuels " One way to do it could be to enlist already beloved and familiar brands in their endeavors - such as United Airlines recruiting Sesame Street's Oscar the Grouch as its first Chief Trash Officer.

Uniquely qualified

This new consumer education campaign is designed to promote the benefits of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the broader public and will feature Oscar in 30 pieces of new and original videos. People can follow Oscar’s journey as he stars in video clips alongside actual United employees.

United's Chief Communications Officer (and Oscar's new colleague), Josh Earnest, commented on the choice of focus for the campaign,

"United has invested in more sustainable aviation fuel production than any airline in the world, by far. Every airline burns jet fuel to run their business, but no airline will solve climate change on its own. So United has enlisted Oscar to help us educate the traveling public of all ages about SAF and rally them to the cause of fighting climate change. From banana peels to fryer grease, Oscar is uniquely qualified to help us explain why trash could be the treasure that fuels the jets of the future."

Supporting Sesame's education non-profit

There is not only an internship in it for Oscar, though. As a part of the collaboration, United Airlines is supporting Sesame Workshop - the nonprofit behind Sesame Street - by donating to the educational organization Welcome Sesame

Jennifer Ahearn, VP of Global Strategic Partnerships and Themed Entertainment, Sesame Workshop, commented,
