MY INTEREST IN ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE HAS BEEN PRESENT FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, SINCE I WAS YOUNG I HAVE FELT AN APPRECIATION FOR STRUCTURES OF ERA’S GONE PAST.
THIS SENSIBILTY HAS MATERIALED OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS AS A DESIRE TO PRESERVE AND ATTEMPT TO ENHANCE HERITAGE STRUCTURES WHICH I HAVE HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE OF WORKING ON OR IN PROXIMITY TO. DURING 1ST YEAR I WAS TASKED WITH DESIGNING A SMALL RESIDENCE FOR A GROUP OF RESEARCHERS WHO WERE TO BE BASED IN THE GROUNDS OF MOUNT EDGECUMBE HOUSE, CORNWALL. THIS PROJECT WAS LIMITED TO A 30M FOOTPRINT AND 40MH INTERIOR FLOOR SPACE. A LOCATION STEEPED IN HISTORY AND POSSESSING MULTIPLE FOLLY ACROSS THE SITE, IT SEEMED UNFITTING TO DEFACE SUCH A SITE WITH AN ULTRA-MODERN NEW DEVELOPMENT. TO SATISFY SUCH A SENSITIVE HISTORIC SITE, I DESIGNED THE PUBLIC FACING FRONTAGE TO ACT AS ITS OWN FOLLY, MIMICKING THAT OF AN OLD LIFEBOAT LAUNCH POST ON THE EASTERN COASTAL PATH LEADING TO CAWSAND, CORNWALL.
MORE RECENTLY IN 3RD YEAR, MY DESIGN GROUP AND I WERE TASKED WITH MASTERPLANNING A SITE IN THE INDUSTRIAL EAST REGION OF SUTTON HARBOUR, PLYMOUTH. THIS SITE PRESENTED LITTLE GOOD TO THE PUBLIC REALM DUE TO BUSY ROADS AND VAST WAREHOUSE COMPLEXES. HOWEVER, THIS DISTRICT HAS BEEN THE SITE OF SIGNIFICANT INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT IN PLYMOUTH SINCE THE LATE 1800’S. TO ATTEMPT TO PAY HOMAGE TO SUCH A SIGNIFICANT PART OF PLYMOUTH’S HERITAGE, OUR MASTERPLAN ATTEMPTED TO SALVAGE AND ADAPTIVELY RESUSE AS MUCH OF THE SITE AS POSSIBLE. EVEN AT A SURFACE DEEP LEVEL, PRESERVING THE INDUSTRIAL SENTIMENT OF THE SITE WAS AN AREA OF PRIORITY.
THE EMOTION ARCHITECTURE EVOKES.
WHEN I BEGAN MY BA IN ARCHITECTURE I DON’T BELIEVE I TRULY UNDERSTOOD THE EMOTION ARCHITECTURE CAN EVOKE, FROM THE EMPLOYMENT OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT TO PORTRAY POWER, TO THE MINDSET A BUILDING CAN CREATE IN THE MIND OF ITS INHABITANTS UPON THEIR ENTRANCE INTO THE SPACE.
DURING MY 2ND YEAR I WROTE A STUDY INVESTIGATING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE REINFORCEMENT OF POWER FOR BENITO MUSSOLINI IN FASCIST ITALY DURING THE 1930’S. ARTE DI STATO, A GOVERNEMENT FUNDED EFFORT BY THE FASCIST STATE TO EMPLOY ARTISTS AND ARCHITECTS TO PORTRAY ITALY AS A STRONG, CULTURED, AND INTELLIGENT NATION. A PART OF HIS CAMPAIGN WHICH HE SAW NECESSARY TO ATTEMPT TO RETURN ITALY TO THE POWERFUL UNIFIED STATE IT WAS DURING THE ROMAN ERA.
AN EXAMPLE I EXPERIENCED RECENTLY OF THE COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE CAN EVOKE IS THE CZECH TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE. DURING MY STUDY TRIP TO PRAGUE IN JANUARY 2024 I VISTED THE ARCHITECTURE FACULTY, IN WHICH A SERIES OF FLOOR PLATES ARE CONNECTED BY TWO INTERNAL ATRIUMS. SUCH A DESIGN MADE THE CIRCULATION THROUGH THE BUILDING VISIBLY CLEAR WHILE ALSO CREATING TWO POCKETS OF TRANSPARENCY. ALLOWING STUDENTS IN ONE STUDIO TO LOOK ACROSS THE ATRIUM AND FEEL CONNECTED TO A PLETHORA OF OTHER STUDENTS EXPERIENCING THE SAME CHALLENGES, GOALS, AND WAY OF LIFE.

THIS DESIGN PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN DURING SEMESTER 2, YEAR 2, BA ARCH.
THIS PROJECT REQUIRED THE DESIGN OF A COMMUNITY SPACE OF MY CHOOSING UPON A PLOT WITHIN A MASTERPLANNED DISTRICT CREATED BY THE PREDECESSING 3RD YEAR COHORT.
THIS PROJECT STRIVED TO PROVIDE COMMUNITIES IN THE WEST OF PLYMOUTH AND BEYOND WITH A CREATIVE SPACE WHICH THEY ARE CURRENTLY DEPRIVED OF. A SPACE FOR ALL TO DISPLAY WORKS, FACILITATE NEW EXPRESSIVE SKILLS, AND KNIT A SENSE OF COMMUNITY IN AN UP AND COMING DISTRICT OF PLYMOUTH. THE MILLBAY BOULEVARD REGION.
I PERSONALLY HAD A LOT OF ENJOYMENT COME OUT OF THIS PROJECT. A DESIGN STUDIO WHICH I SAW AS A TEST OF MY DESIGN CAPABILITIES, EMPLOYING COMPLEX CIRCULATION LINKS TO FACILITATE EXPERIENTIAL JOURNEYS ACROSS THE SCHEME, A PROJECT WHICH TESTED THE WAY IN WHICH ART IS VIEWED & THE IMPACT THIS HAS UPON THE ARCHITECTURE WHICH IT INHABITS.
THE FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT ALTHOUGH MAY INITIALLY SEEM TO BE THE ART, HOWEVER, IN MY MIND THE PROJECT NEEDED TO BE ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF PLYMOUTH. A SPACE FOR FACILITATION, INHABITATION, AND MAKING OF PLACE.

TECN521 ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY REPORT. SEP 2022 - DEC 2022.
FORMER SITE OF GOOD COMPANIONS PUB, PLYMOUTH.
THIS TECH PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN DURING SEMESTER 1, YEAR 2, BA ARCH.
THIS PROJECT REQUIRED THE TECHNICAL ANALYSIS OF A GROUP DESIGN PROJECT, IN WHICH WE CREATED A SOCIAL HOUSING SCHEME IN THE HEART OF PLYMOUTH. A SPACE WHICH NEEDED TO BE FLEXIBLE AND ALLOW THE RESIDENTS AND THE PUBLIC AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEAVE A MARK ON THE STERILE CITY CENTER.
THIS PROJECT STRIVED TO PROVIDE UNDERPRIVELEGED FAMILIES IN THE HEART OF PLYMOUTH WITH A SPACE THEY COULD CALL THEIR OWN, ATTEMPTING TO CRAFT A STRONG COMMUNITY CENTERED AROUND THE MULTISTOREY PUBLIC COURTYARDS AND STREETS IN THE SKY.
AN ADAPTABLE SCHEME WHICH FEATURES PRE-FABRICATED, SEALED, CROSSLAMINATED TIMBER UNITS WHICH CAN BE SLOTTED INTO A STEEL “DWELLING FRAME”. CONNECTING TO THE RELEVANT UTILITIES ONCE IN-SITU. THE SCHEME PREDICTING THE FUTURE ERECTION OF MORE STEEL “DWELLING FRAMES” ACROSS THE UK WHICH COULD HOST SUCH UNITS. ALLOWING RESIDENTS TO RELOCATE THEIR HOME IF THEIR PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES REQUIRED, DISCONNECTING FROM THE GRID AND BEING TRASPORTED TO THE NEXT LOCATION.

EAST SUTTON HARBOUR, PLYMOUTH.
THIS DESIGN PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN DURING SEMESTER 1, YEAR 3, BA ARCH.
THIS DESIGN STUDIO PROJECT REQUIRED A GROUP OF 4, INCLUDING MYSELF, TO MASTERPLAN A 12 ACRE SITE IN THE INDUSTRIAL COXSIDE DISTRICT TO THE EAST OF SUTTON HARBOUR, PLYMOUTH.
THIS PROJECT STRIVED TO [RE]CONNECT WITH 4 MAIN PRINCIPLES WHICH HAD BEEN INHERENTLY IGNORED WITHIN THE SITE. THOSE BEING HERITAGE, COMMUNITY, TRANSPORT, AND GREEN AND BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE. SUCH FACTORS WOULD BECOME THE DEFINING STRANDS OF SYNTHESIS FOR THE DESIGN.
OUR BRIEF FOR THIS PROJECT REQUIRED 5 SPECIFIED BUILDINGS OR TYPOLOGIES WITHIN OUR MASTERPLAN, THOSE BEING A HEALTH-HUB, A BUSINESS AND TRANSPORT CENTER, A D.I.Y. AND REUSE WORKSHOP, A COMMUNITY CENTER AND LIBRARY, AND TO ENSURE OVER 60% OF THE BUILT VOLUME WAS DESIGNATED AS HOUSING. THE BRIEF ALSO STATED OUR DESIGN MUST REVITALISE THE CHURCH OF ST JOHN. AFTER SUCH REQUIREMENTS HAD BEEN SATISFIED WE HAD AGENCY TO DESIGN THE SPACE AS WE SAW FIT.
OUR FOCUS WAS SET UPON CRAFTING A VIBRANT, INCLUSIVE, & MIXED-USE SPACE.

THIS DISSERTATION REQUIRED A WORDCOUNT OF 6000 WORDS, INCLUDING 6 VISUALS MADE BY ME, AND SUPPLEMENTED BY RELEVANT IMAGES AND DIAGRAMS. (ALL VISUALS SHOWN IN THIS SECTION ARE MADE BY ME).
THIS DISSERTATION STRIVED TO INVESTIGATE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DESTRUCTION OF PLACE, MORE SPECIFICALLY THE DESTRUCTION OF HOME AND EXISTENTIAL SPACE. A PRACTICE COINED BY ACADEMICS AS DOMICIDE.
THE FOCUS OF THE STUDY BEING SITUATED WITHIN PALESTINE & SYRIA IN THE MIDDLE EAST. DOMICIDE IS COMMON PRACTICE FOR THE ADMINISTRATIONS IN POWER IN THESE REGIONS, IMPARTING BOTH PHYSICAL & POLITICAL VIOLENCE UPON THE HOMES OF THE CIVILIAN POPULATION.
THIS DISSERTATION GRAPPLES WITH THE IMPACTS OF LOSS OF PLACE, THE JOURNEY OF THE NOW REFUGEE, [RE]SETTLEMENT, THE ARCHITECTURE WHICH IS IMPOSED UPON THE REFUGEE (IN THIS STUDY WITHIN LEBANON & JORDAN AS A PLACE OF REFUGE), RACIALLY MOTIVATED DISCRIMINATION TOWARDS REFUGEES, & THE [RE]CONNECTION TO HOME AFTER SUBJECTION TO DOMICIDE.

ARMED CONFLICT AND VIOLENT OPPRESSION HAS BEEN RIFE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST OVER THE PAST CENTURY, DISPLACING MILLIONS OF INNOCENT CITIZENS FROM THE EXISTENTIAL PLACES THEY RECOGNISE AS HOME. THIS INQUIRY STRIVES TO INTERROGATE THE DOMICIDAL TENDENCIES OF THE REGION’S ADMINISTRATIONS. THOSE ADMINISTRATIONS NOT LIMITED TO THOSE INVOLVED IN CONFLICTS BUT ALSO THOSE WHO SUPPOSEDLY PROVIDE REFUGE. THIS INVESTIGATION WILL FOCUS ON THE DESTRUCTION OF HOME WITHIN PALESTINE AND SYRIA AND INTERROGATE THE [RE]-SETTLEMENT OF PEOPLES WITHIN JORDAN AND LEBANON.
