Imagine what goes on in your business or home for which you feel you crucially need power. While many of us can still get by with just some inconvenience, not having a power outage is critical, even life and death, for many people, healthcare facilities, and for public services and safety. Not to mention, businesses can be harmed financially. Further, all of Texas can be affected by power outages, not just the coast.

Enter propane backup and standby power generation. While propane generators are not new, the opportunity to supplement a marketer business by selling generators can seem new to many.

Besides supplying the fuel for those generators, some marketers have started generator sales, which can be another revenue stream. Especially in propane’s off-season months, generators are needed. Think of when most storms hit, which is one of the top reasons for power outages – the spring.

Generators can be important for both residential and commercial use, for major financial loss and health risk reasons. Some states are starting to mandate generator usage by assisted living communities and nursing homes, such as in Florida, where Governor Rick Scott signed a bill into law last year, citing deaths at senior care facilities caused by power and air conditioning being knocked out during hurricanes.

In fact, Texas ranked second in the country in the number of blackouts in a 10-year period. Statistics from Eaton.com’s “Blackout Tracker” provided that 11,475,011 Texans were affected in total, with 9,329 people per outage on average affected. There were 1,603 outages, at an average duration of 71 minutes. Eaton is a major power management company with more than 99,000 employees worldwide.

Safety and Comfort

For residential customers, there can be a variety of configurations on the needs of propane standby power to make a home more resilient. In terms of electricity, “resiliency” is the ability to function after or during an ongoing natural disaster or accidental power outage. If a home is all-electric, standby generation is even more needed, as many propane appliances can operate on propane without electricity running. Less

generation and money is needed for up-front backup generator costs for homes that are even partially propane, i.e., have some propane appliances. That is to say, for an all-electric home, the need is even greater, and the size of the unit must be larger.

Some propane appliances and features homes and commercial businesses can have are space heating, water heating, cooking, fireplaces, clothes dryers and outdoor amenities. If customers have already put in a tank, why not upgrade their water heater, stove, or other appliances?

Melanie Tydrich, Senior Channel Manager, with KOHLER Residential Generators says that automatic standby generators connect into a home’s electrical system and run on either propane or natural gas. “When utility power goes down, our standby generators will automatically restore power within 10 seconds,” Tydrich said. “Depending on the size of the generator, it can power everything in a home, including lights, HVAC systems, refrigerators, sump pumps, computers, TVs, home security systems and more. These generators provide significantly more power than a portable model and – just as important – the homeowner doesn’t need to be home to operate or fuel the unit. Our automatic standby generators are ready-to-go 24/7/365.”

“Further, we recently introduced a new enclosure option for our popular 14kW and 20kW residential generators. The durable, corrosion-resistant enclosure provides homeowners with additional installation flexibility and is an ideal solution for homes located in hurricane-prone areas. Capable of withstanding 181 mph winds, the aluminum enclosure allows a KOHLER automatic standby generator to be installed as close as 18” from most structures while maintaining compliance with national building codes. The new enclosure is also designed for easy installation and maintenance with panels that can be removed without tools for easy access,” Tydrich said.

Protecting Businesses

Aside from some of the previous selling points, standby power for commercial interests is important because of the lost revenue and productivity for which outages can account. Businesses can lose up to $14,000 per outage. One Midwestern food retailer service case study, for example, shows it lost $32,750 for a 4-8 hour loss of power.

What makes up the costs of a power outage? The average business will experience 3.5 power interruptions in a two-year period.

Even a short power interruption incurs costs. Longer interruptions can be catastrophic. According to a Power Outage Impact Research report by B2B International: • Relocating a single patient from a healthcare facility costs roughly $2,000.

“I would say ‘yes and yes’ on if propane marketers should supplement their very seasonal business by selling generators; it’s been a success for us,” said Josh Kasprzak of Texas Star Propane, Plantersville, Texas. “We added $500,000 to our business in the first year alone by selling generators. Once you get done with the main part of our business model, selling propane for cold months, then hurricane season starts up. Instead of just eking by during the warm months, we can now support our employees and continue growing the business. The only thing I caution is just being

To dovetail off of these points, not only do standby generators provide additional revenue in off months, they work hand-inhand with other propane appliances, which marketers will supply for, as well. Further, the more appliances in a home or building that run on propane, the less stress to a propane generator, and less need for a larger unit, saving money on the unit and its fuel.

Although diesel has traditionally dominated the market, builders and retrofit consumers should seriously consider propane generators for the following reasons that other fuels simply can’t match: • Permanently installed and supplied by an above- or below ground tank, it starts automatically, the moment the power goes down.

• Supplies supplemental electricity in as little as 10 seconds after an outage.

• Propane doesn’t degrade over time, unlike diesel or gasoline, making it an ideal standby power fuel.

• Permanently installed units produce as little as 60 decibels of noise, comparable to a normal conversation.

• Available in a variety of capacities to fit the needs of any size home.

• Produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than diesel or gasoline.

• Propane is non-toxic, non-poisonous, and won’t contaminate soil or water.

• Even 4-hour power outages cost customers an average of $1,250, making the hesitancy to spend money on a generator, costing in the low thousands, almost a moot point. Home residents also experience 3.5 outages in a 2-year period.

More Benefits Than Just Financial and Health Security

Propane can be used to fuel portable, standby, and off-grid electric generators, and is an excellent fuel choice when facing a potential power outage. Propane proves to be the lowest maintenance, most reliable, environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and economical generator types available.

Propane generators are environmentally friendly, producing half of the ozone forming emissions and zero evaporative emissions. Unlike gasoline or diesel, there is no chance of spilling propane so no risk of groundwater poisoning or well water contamination. Gasoline contains more than 150 chemicals, including small amounts of benzene, toluene, xylene, and sometimes lead, all of which can lead to significant health issues to humans and pets if spilled.

Common sizes for propane tanks range from 120 to 1,000 gallons so enough propane can be stored on-site to run a generator for enough time to get through most power outages. Most importantly, propane tanks can last for up to 30 or 40 years.

Depending upon the load requirements, a 10kW generator can operate on around 5 gallons of propane a day. That means with a standard 500-gallon tank homeowners could rely on at least 10 full days of electricity during significant weather events, or double the average outage duration.

The top causes of power outages are storms, earthquakes, aging infrastructure and floods. Choosing the proper size of generator is important because people forget to assume they will actually be using MORE power than usual during times of outages. This is because ALL the family members/home dwellers, etc., would typically be stranded at home and utilizing the resources in the home as it would typically not be safe to travel, if places outside the home were even functioning. Deciding the generator size goes hand-in-hand with its storage, or display. Normally it would be placed outside near the central air unit, displayed similarly.

Architect Role as Energy Influencer Key to PERC Outreach

Construction professionals often decide what energy system will power new buildings, leaving buyers and tenants to live with choices they may not have made for themselves.

Homeowners who dread the cold spots common in all-electric homes or who prefer to cook with the precision of a gas stove too often settle for those inconveniences because the architects, mechanical engineers, HVAC or plumbing professionals planned around other interests.

Unit and installation costs, convenience and popularity are weighty influences when a builder is investing in home or commercial building specifications. Propane may not even be considered because the decision maker isn’t aware of its comparative value to users.

Ten years ago, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) enlisted the expertise of the nation’s foremost information source on residential and commercial design and construction industries, Hanley Wood, to bridge that information gap.

Early discussions revealed that architects are key influencers in specifying project energy systems. They also are eager to learn more about propane options for their projects.

“If an architect writes in a specification for a certain energy system, it’s more likely to stick with the builder. I think that played a big role in knowing we had to go after architects along with the builders and remodelers,” explains Jeff Lee, senior director of content development at Hanley Wood who has worked with PERC

since 2012.

Raising the awareness and understanding of propane’s value among architects nationwide is not a simple lift.

PERC’s outreach has evolved to include several approaches: • Sponsoring and exhibiting at assorted builder tradeshows, such as International Builders Show and Greenbuild, where construction professionals seek to learn about the hottest trends in new systems and equipment to use in home construction. PERC also provides resources that marketers and state associations can use at local tradeshows.

• Producing an e-newsletter with articles that explain how propane systems, appliances, and equipment can improve efficiency, lower costs, provide greater comfort, and reduce carbon footprints. The newsletter is sent to about 66,000 construction professionals, of which architects make up the second largest segment. Subscriptions to the free newsletter are available on the PERC website (www.propane.com).

• Publishing advertisements and bylined articles promoting propane in building trade publications, such as Building Science and Earth911.

• Creating a library of case studies and video testimonials from architects who have found success featuring propane in their projects. Propane marketers can find these powerful stories on the PERC website (www.propane.com) and share links in their marketing efforts to local architects.

• Provide free technical training through an online program called the Propane Training Academy (www.propanetrainingacademy.com). The curriculum allows architects and other building professionals to earn important continuing education credits while learning about the benefits of propane applications, installation specifics and products.

“Architects may not know as much about propane or propane systems compared to competing energy sources,” explains Jesse Marcus, PERC’s director of residential and commercial development. “The Propane Training Academy provides lots of education about all sorts of buildings and systems that can enhance the likelihood that they specify propane by increasing their knowl-

The training includes courses about how propane-fueled residential and commercial applications reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in new construction and remodels. Others address energy efficiency, space and water heating, outdoor living, power generation and propane systems.

PERC adds to or updates its 20 course offerings several times each year based on new research on the latest building codes or energy performance data. Customized tools used in the training show propane’s comparative energy efficiency, emissions, fuel consumption, operating costs and building HERS scores – details that are vital to builders and buyers alike.

Continuing education was an obvious strategy to engage and educate architects about propane, Lee says.

“Architects are required to take ongoing education to keep their certifications, so a great way to reach them is to provide those courses,” he says. “They often take up to an hour to complete, which is far more time than they would spend just reading an article.

It’s a much more in-depth way for us to push the propane message.”

Architects, engineers, and other construction professionals have taken about 2,500 courses a year at the Propane Training Academy site since 2012.

Scholarship Fundraisers at the Expo There will be four fundraisers at the 2019 Crossroads Propane Expo hosted by the Texas Propane Gas Association.

All below fundraisers will benefit the TPGA Scholarship Foundation and take place at the Expo on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the American Bank Center.

50/50 Raffle

YOU COULD WIN BIG CASH Supporters purchase raffle tickets, 1 ticket for $20 or 6 tickets for $100.

The winning ticket number is drawn after ticket sales close. In the case of a 50-50 fundraising raffle the prize is 50% of the money taken in by the raffle ticket sales. The other 50% is retained by the nonprofit group holding the raffle. Hence the name, 50-50 raffle fundraiser.

Featuring Top Tire Brands Available to TPGA Members Texas Propane Gas Association (TPGA) member companies can start SAVING on top tire brands with a NEW Tire discount program available from the association. This program gives members discounted new tire pricing for some top tire brands at tire dealers nationwide, even with your local dealer if they carry our partner brands. Qualifying member companies can save an average of 25 percent on new commercial truck tire purchases. In addition, retreads and light truck and passenger tires are also available on some brands in this program.

Getting Started TPGA member companies interested in participating in this program must first be members of the Texas Propane Gas Association. Companies must also pass the credit requirements to be enrolled into the program.

This credit requirement also includes verification of creditworthiness of company principals. Call TPGA at (800)325-7427 to request a credit application or download one at www.txpropane.com/discounts under the Member section of the website.

Making Purchases Credit applications must be filled out in their entirety, which includes placing a credit card on file for delinquent accounts. Once creditworthiness is established, tire manufacturer’s headquarters will be notified to process the member company in their national network. This usually takes a few days.

Our member will be notified when the tire manufacturer has completed the process to add to their system. This will include receiving a ‘bill to ID’ and the company’s unique ‘ship to ID’. These IDs can be used at dealerships nationwide when making tire purchases.

Purchases can be made at dealerships nationwide by providing the dealership with the ‘bill to ID’ and the company’s unique ‘ship to ID’ as well as a purchase order number, name of individual making the purchase and a vehicle number if applicable. Dealership will submit the purchase details to tire brand headquarters for processing at national account pricing.

Pricing Periodic price adjustments do occur based primarily on raw material cost fluctuations. All program participants will be notified of any impending price adjustments prior to those adjustments taking place so purchases can be planned in advance of any unfavorable price increase.

Invoicing Once the tire manufacturer’s headquarters receives the purchase details, the tire manufacturer will invoice our partner for the purchase. Our partner will then invoice the company for their purchase. Invoices from our partner will include purchase order numbers, names of individuals making the purchase, dealership contact information and vehicle number if provided on the invoice to aid companies in matching invoices with delivery receipts (DR).

DR numbers will also be included on the invoices. Invoices are due within 30 days of the invoice date.

People in Propane Cherry Richardson, 88, of Sulphur Springs, TX passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019. Mrs. Richardson worked in retail for many years with Howards Department Store and Shelton’s Propane. She also worked as a news reporter for the Vernon Daily Record and the Sulphur Springs News-Telegram. Our thoughts and prayers go out the family. Memorials can be made to the Davis Street Baptist Church, 427 Gilmer St, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482.

Congratulations to Jean McDowell, President of McDowell Owens Engineering, Inc. of Houston, TX, who has been appointed to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 54 Technical Committee as the Texas Propane Gas Association (TPGA)’s alternate representative on the national committee. TPGA looks forward to Jean representing us along with Richard Gilbert, TPGA’s Sr. Technical Advisor, who serves as our representative on both NFPA 54 & 58. Mr. McDowell is also a working member of the NFPA 58 Technical Committee as a Special Expert. He has over 35 years of experience in fire and explosion analysis and over 30 years of experience in fuel gas related incidences involving equipment, maintenance and code application.

Virg Bird, 101, of Granbury, passed away on May 15, 2019. He worked for Sands Propane for 26 years. His greatest joy was taking care of his family.

LPG Marine Engine Manufacturer Receives Green4Sea Award, Moves Headquarters to Texas for handling fast load changes as well as stable LPG running during heavy weather, tropical and arctic conditions. The MELGIP engine is also able to burn the liquid parts in the volatile organic compounds (VOC), called LVOC. It is expected that VOC will be regulated in the future, so with this new engine type, this emission issue can be solved. MAN Energy Solutions further said that the ME-LGIP can be retrofitted on approx. 3000 of MAN B&W ME-C engines which is the number of ME-C engines already in operation.The ME-LGIP engines are included in MAN ES’ two-stroke engine programme offering gas engines for all kind of ships utilising two-stroke engine propulsion.

SAFETY4SEA awarded MAN Energy Solutions the 2019 GREEN4SEA Technology Award, sponsored by Dorian LPG, during the 2019 GREEN4SEA Conference.

MAN Energy Solutions received the award for its LPG fuelled ME-LGIP 2-stroke MAN B&W engines for propulsion of merchant ships. The engine is also able to burn the liquid parts in the volatile organic compounds (VOC) and can be retrofitted on approx. 3,000 of MAN B&W ME-C engines already in operation.

Accepting the award on behalf of MAN Energy Solutions, Mr. René Sejer Laursen, Promotion Manager, stated “Shipowners have been pushing us for the last ten years to develop LPG. We think that LPG is a good fuel option for the future. In fact, LPG could work as a strategic fuel for the first 10-15 years.”

In 2018, the world’s first order for the ME-LGIP dual-fuel MAN B&W engine for operation on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was placed

by Exmar. These two-stroke dual-fuel engines utilize the diesel cycle combustion process to burn LPG, which is now another fuel option that can been used in the two-stroke dual-fuel gas engine portfolio. When initiating the development of engines for operation on LPG, a close study on available technologies was carried out. It was then decided to use the ME-LGI injection concept for injection of LPG, MAN Energy Solutions said. MAN Energy Solutions explains that the LPG engine has a well-controlled combustion process, which is one pre-condition

Man Energy Solutions Opens U.S. Headquarters in Texas On May 8, 2019, MAN Energy Solutions officially opened its new U.S. headquarters and Gulf Coast service center in Brookshire, Texas, about 30 miles west of Houston.

“We’ve served our customers in North America for over 70 years with our wide range of technology solutions and services. Today, we reinforce our commitment to meet the present and future customers needs by opening our new, expanded US headquarter in Brookshire.

This is a significant step towards our ambition to grow our market share in this region,” states Wayne Jones OBE. The new workshop and office complex combines engine and turbomachinery repair operations, which were formerly located at two different Gulf Coast sites. It serves as the home base for over 140 employees who are also responsible for the provision of technical support and field services to customers in the marine, oil & gas, petrochemical and power generation industries in North America.

Over 100,000 square feet of the new campus are allotted to the service shop, an expansion of nearly 60%. The facility is equipped with cuttingedge technology and machine tools needed for complex repairs. One of the two new shop bays features a 50-ton crane with a 35-foot hook height, which allows larger pieces of equipment to be handled easily. A new rotor balance stand with a capability up to 100,000 pounds and laser cladding cell are also important features. The new building is not just geared to the needs of the company’s own equipment, but also to similar equipment produced by other manufacturers.
