There’s more to selling propane than just propane. Many propane marketers across the country offer a line of propane-related products and appliances to supplement gas sales, especially during summer months when sales taper off. And some are doing so well with this sideline part of the business that they have created a dedicated space for their products. These can range from outdoor gear like grills and fire pits to indoor appliances like gas or even, yes, electric fireplaces.

Showroom ideas from Hill Country Propane Inc., Fredericksburg.

At Hill Country Propane Inc. in Fredericksburg, co-owners Wanda and Bert Franz have had a showroom at their current location for 20 years. They started off with just grills and LP parts, and then Wanda began slowly adding other products such as gas logs, fire pits and tables, and a line of local seasonings.

Hill Country’s current showroom is 20 feet by 40 feet, but they plan to expand it for next year.

“We want to have a fireplace display. We currently offer fireplaces to builders and other customers, but right now we’re not large enough to install a full display in our showroom,” Wanda Franz said.

David Pinkstaff, co-owner of AA Bottled Gas in Jacksonville, Florida, said it’s hard to compete with the big box stores on certain products like gas stoves because of price. But he’s found his niche with barbecue-related products.

The Jacksonville showroom grew out of Pinkstaff ’s love of cooking. He started by displaying various sauces, then expanded to include grills, grilling utensils, and charcoals and wood chips from all over the world.

“We cater to barbecue competition groups,” Pinkstaff said.

use the reports, PERC has built an industry-only web portal, www.residentialmarketgrowth.com. The portal provides access to reports for all 381 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA). The portal also contains FAQs, training webinars and marketing materials for homeowners and builders.

Access to the portal is restricted to active members of the propane industry. Please follow the instructions on the site to create a user account. And, watch the video that provides an overview of the report and resources contained within the portal.

The reports make data available at the zip code level and are presented using tables and heat maps. Generally, the higher the number the better the opportunity for propane retrofit or adding propane appliances. And, throughout the reports RED IS HOT, BLUE IS NOT. Once you have your report and have reviewed the data, use the customizable direct mailers, print ads, social media graphics, and bill inserts in your marketing efforts to get more propane appliances into homes and secure relationships with construction professionals actively building in your area.

Also, PERC hosts quarterly webinars to review updated national data and take a closer look at two to three markets. Plan to attend the next webinar in mid-June. And, don’t worry if your market isn’t the focus. This is a great opportunity to learn how to read the reports, get ideas on how to put the data to use in your own market, and ask questions of the experts.

Fire extinguishers can keep a small incident from becoming a major accident. It is important that all workers and operators understand how to maintain and use fire extinguishers, in the event of a safety-related issue.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: 3 NFPA 58 requires at least one fire extinguisher be available at

a bulk propane plant.

3 Multiple extinguishers are a good idea in a large or spread-out

Advise your supervisor if you are due for training.

3 It is your job to frequently check the fire extinguisher in your work area or on your service vehicle. If the extinguisher is due for inspection, low on charge, damaged, or missing an inspection tag, notify your supervisor immediately.

The Propane Education & Research Council met April 20, 2017 in Nashville in conjunction with the NPGA Southeastern. The Council is a 21-member board appointed by the National Propane Gas Association and the Gas Processors Association.

The Council meets quarterly to review and consider national and state programs and projects.

The following councilors were nominated for positions on the PERC Executive Committee and will be running unopposed for one-year terms that will begin in July: Chairman: Drew Combs, CHS (Minnesota) Vice chairman, marketers: Rob Chalmers, Meritum Energy Holdings (Texas) Vice chairman, producers: Kasib Abdullah, BP (Texas) Treasurer: Randy Doyle, Blossman Gas (Mississippi) Three councilors have been nominated for Council secretary: Daniel Dixon, AmeriGas; Robert Freeman, Freeman Gas; and Bruce Leonard, Targa Resources. The Council will elect one before the next public meeting in July

Inside the Industry The Council voted unanimously to make Chris Kowalski of Osterman the vice chairman of the Market Outreach and Training (MOT) Working Group, one of three groups that make up the PERC Advisory Committee.

The Council approved the following funding requests: Docket 21243: Carbon Management Information Center Consortium 2017, $50,000 Docket 21200: 2017 Propane Energy Pod Builder Incentive Program, $225,000 Docket 21212: Updating Selected Consumer Safety / “Duty to Warn” Materials, $99,675 Docket 21213: CETP NFPA 58 Refresher Courses, $129,938 The PERC Council also heard a presentation from Jeff Stewart of Blue Star Gas on the importance of renewable propane and zero net energy.

There were 73 state rebate requests approved since the February Council meeting report. In addition to rebates allocated to each state, PERC sets aside matching funds, which they call Partnership with State (PWS) funds, for each state that

can be used for certain projects like incentives and the Proudly Propane Blue marketing campaign.

Of the state programs awarded, 30 programs included requests for Partnership with States funds.

The total amount of state rebate funds awarded was $2,745,510.47 with an additional $606,524 awarded in PWS funding.

The next PERC Council meeting will be July 11- 12, 2017 in Denver, CO.
