Propane Can-Do Conference: Marketing Training Series Comes to Texas Convention

Last summer, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) hosted its first-ever Can-Do Conference in Chicago, where propane professionals and marketing experts came together to take their digital outreach, propane sales, and marketing efforts to new heights.

This year, PERC and the Texas Propane Gas Association (TPGA) will be hosting a mini Can-Do Conference as part of PERC’s CanDo Marketing Training Series. Corpus Christi Sidetrips: Port Aransas Beckons

While Corpus Christi can keep you happy/busy for weeks, if your family is looking for some beach time, consider heading out to Mustang Island before or after the convention.

It was August 25, 2017, that Hurricane Harvey put a bullseye on Port Aranasas and Rockport, Texas. Those two beach communities suffered immeasurable loss. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, Port A, as most Texans call it, was ostensibly shut down.

The Texas treasure of a town has been busy making its comeback, with shops and restaurants slowly rebuilding and beginning anew. Old treasures are back, and new ones have added their flavor to the mix.

SAFETY PRACTICES WHEN OPERATING YOUR CRANE NEAR POWER LINES INCLUDE: 3 Carefully plan all work and crane

Overhead power lines are among the biggest dangers that you will encounter as a crane operator or rigger. To protect yourself, your co-workers, and bystanders from electrocution while operating your truck or crane near overhead power lines, several safe operating guidelines should be followed.

PROPER PLANNING AND RECOGNITION ARE IMPORTANT: 3 Conduct a visual site assessment before moving equipment

onto a job site. Identify any above- or below-ground hazards.

Walk the lift route.

3 Always assume that an overhead line is energized unless an electric utility authority verifies that the lines are de-energized.

3 Determine the voltage of each line. If the power line has a normal voltage of 350,000 volts or less, a 20-foot minimum clearance is required from the line’s danger zone. If the voltage is unknown or above 350,000 volts, a 50-foot clearance must be maintained.

3 When an energized power line is near the work area, create a barrier to identify the zone that the boom, hoisting line,

movements that may be required to eliminate any chance of contact with a power line.

3 Make sure to maintain proper clearance away from power lines at all times.

No portion of the crane, its load, and attachments should enter the line’s danger zone. If it is windy and there is potential for the line to sway, take this into account when you determine the minimum clearance.

3 Always operate in conditions where the vehicle and equipment can be stabilized. Make sure to use your outriggers. Do not set up on soft soil, mud, snow, or other unstable ground conditions that could allow equipment to shift and move within the danger zone of the power line, without taking the necessary steps to ensure the stability of the crane.

3 Reduce the crane’s operating speed to allow more reaction time if needed.

3 If the crane operator cannot maintain a safe clearance by visual means, designate a person to observe the clearance and to give immediate warning if the crane approaches the danger zone.

3 Make sure all personnel are at a safe distance away from the crane and the power line at all times.

Tips for Managers on Giving Feedback to Employees

Giving employee feedback is considered by many managers to be one of the most difficult parts of their job, and many managers struggle with nearly every aspect of employee feedback, including when to give it, what types of activities warrant inclusion, how to deliver their message, and other specifics of the task. Because of this, some managers have a tendency to avoid employee feedback, which could be impacting both their team and their own personal growth in a negative way.

Employee feedback does not have to be a stressful undertaking, however, and it should not be something that you feel you have to avoid. Below you will find some of the most important basic facts about

employee feedback, as well as tips for delivering it well: It can be very beneficial.

Simply put, employee feedback is a crucial component of career development. If you as a manager do not provide your employees with feedback as to how well they are doing their job, how will the employee recognize the areas in which they need to improve? And how will they know what they’re doing right? Whether your feedback involves praise or constructive criticism, it can be a huge source of motivation for your employee.

Whether you’re providing positive or negative feedback, it’s important that you

prepare well before speaking with your employee. If you do not give some thought beforehand to what you will say, you risk conveying your message badly, meaning you could offend your employee, fail to get your point across, or even embarrass yourself through poor word choice or delivery. Positive feedback is much easier to deliver than negative feedback because it’s likely to be well-received regardless of how it’s structured, but there are certain things to avoid when delivering negative feedback: • Avoid sounding accusatory. Using “you” structures instead of “I/ we” structures tends to imply that the employee should feel guilty. Instead of “You turned in your reports late this week,” try “I noticed this week that your reports were late.” It’s a subtle difference, but it prevents the employee from feeling attacked, so they’re less likely to become offended or defensive.

• Avoid using the phrase “need to.” This makes it seem as if something has gone seriously wrong and the employee is to blame.

• Don’t be vague. For example, don’t just say, “I’ve noticed you seem to have poor attitude lately.” Instead, clarify your statement with specific examples, as this clarifies for the employee exactly what you consider to be indicative of a “poor attitude.” This helps both of you to avoid a similar discussion in the future.

Employee feedback can and often does occur in the form of a structured formal review, but it doesn’t have to. While yearly or semi-annual reviews are certainly beneficial, there is also an equally important place for informal feedback. Formal employee feedback is valuable in that it provides a setting in which both you and your employee are prepared to discuss their performance. In the formal setting, both praise and constructive criticism are expected and are therefore generally well-received, but many experts believe that yearly and even semi-annual employee reviews are insufficient for motivating employees.

As a manager, you should also aim to provide your employees with feedback in-

Business Beat formally in any situation in which you feel it is warranted. Projects completed before deadlines, outstanding performances during client sales pitches, and innovative suggestions during company meetings are all examples of situations that you can use as an opportunity to provide an employee with informal and immediate positive feedback.

Negative feedback, missed deadlines, negative attitudes, poorly thought out client sales pitches, and shabby work on projects are all examples of situations in which you should provide your employee with constructive criticism immediately following the incident. An employee does not want to wait until their annual review the following year to learn that you have been disappointed with certain aspects of their work for an extended period of time. Providing the employee with immediate feedback will improve their performance in the short-term, which benefits both of you immensely.

PERC Approves Initiatives & Projects at Spring Meeting The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) met last month in Atlanta, GA in conjunction will Southeastern and approved the following project dockets.

Docket: 21933 Principal Contractor: Swanson Russell Title: Dispensing Propane Safely Technical and Market Revisions Amount Requested: $298,354 Action:Approved Docket 21933: provides core workforce training, while developing innovative methods to deliver the training, is the focus of the Dispensing Propane Safely Technical and Market Revisions training project. Regulatory changes are expected in the next edition of NFPA 58 and need to be reflected in the PERC training material. Per feedback from the industry, PERC Council, and Safety & Technical Training Roadmap session, the industry is looking for a better, faster, cheaper, customizable way to receive and deliver training. This project includes updating the current secondary markets training program, including rebranding and development of e-learning modules.

Docket: 21943 Principal Contractor: ICF Title: Impact of the Propane Industry on U.S. and State Economies (2018) Amount Requested: $70,000 Action: Approved Docket 21943: is a proposed stud that will assess the economic impact in 2018 of the propane industry on the overall U.S. economy and the state economies in which propane is produced, distributed, and consumed. Impacts will be measured in terms of contributions to gross domestic product and employment. Both the direct impacts (the propane industry itself ) and indirect and induced multiplier effects (suppliers and suppliers to suppliers to the propane industry) will be included.

The results of the study will be suitable to help inform the propane industry, propane consumers, and policymakers of the important role propane plays in meeting the nation’s energy needs, spurring economic activity, and providing employment to American workers.

Docket: 21944 Principal Contractor: Gas Technology Institute Title: Technical and Market Analysis for Residential and Commercial Micro-CHP Amount Requested: $25,000 Action: Approved Docket 21944: GTI will conduct a technical and market analysis for residential and commercial Micro-CHP (mCHP) that characterizes key mCHP technologies, including fuel cells, and determines regional technical and economic viabilities of those technologies in residential and commercial applications The primary objective of the project is to identify and characterize existing and emerging mCHP technologies, and to determine the regional technical and economic viabilities of those technologies to single- and multifamily residential and light commercial building sectors.

Docket: 21770 (Change Order) Principal Contractor: PERC Title: Residential & Commercial Market Outreach Program Amount Requested: $300,000 Action: Approved Docket 21770: The Residential & Commercial Market Outreach Program is dedicated to targeting individuals and organizations critical to the specification of propane in residential homes and commercial facilities. These markets account for most propane sales and usage, equaling about 73 percent of all odorized propane consumption (53 percent residential and

The Outreach Program integrates business development efforts with communications strategies to engage and inform target audiences, with the end-goal of increasing opportunity for propane consumption. A portion of the Outreach Program includes funding for the Propane Construction Incentive Program.

The incentive program provides builders of new construction and remodelers of existing homes a monetary incentive for installing propane appliances in new homes or remodels. The program has three main goals: gallon growth and stability in the residential market, encouraging builders and remodelers to install propane appliances, and equipping propane marketers with a tangible program that helps empower partnerships with builders and remodelers.

Docket: 21954 (Rebate Request) Principal Contractor:Propane Education Foundation of Florida Title: Florida Continuing Education Production Amount Requested: $5,000 Action: Approved Docket 21954: The State of Florida enacted a law change last year that increased continuing education requirements for our industry. The requirements for continuing education went from the need from approximately 900 license holders to around 6,000 license holders.

The Florida Propane Gas Association (FPGA) has assembled a learning management system with some state-approved continuing education classes and is looking to expand it so the industry can keep education current and not lose their licenses. This request will be for the video production of the FPGA annual Safety School in May to in turn provide 26.5 hours of continuing education videos for the FPGA learning management system.

The next council meeting will be July 17-18, 2019 in Lake Tahoe, CA.

2019 Predictions for Propane Use in the Construction Market

The following article was originally published in Contractor Supply magazine.

For decades, propane has been used as a cost-effective, efficient fuel for jobsite heating and lighting, and power generation. The fuel’s reliability in small engines has also led to its use in a growing number of construction applications.

Q: What trends are you seeing in the construction market overall with regard to propane?

A: One trend we’ve been seeing for several years is a move toward more sustainable construction processes and environmentally-responsible jobsites. As the public and construction employees demand environmental accountability on construction projects to protect both local ecosystems and their own health, propane’s reduced emissions and clean operation will continue to gain attention.

Propane equipment, like jobsite heaters, lights, and generators, doesn’t require additional fluids or filters like diesel equipment does to meet emissions regulations — a

benefit for both project budgets and bid proposals. Unlike gasoline, propane also won’t cause soil or groundwater contamination, or expose equipment operators to carcinogens like benzene. And new propane engines for all manners of light construction equipment from concrete polishers and grinders to power buggies use a closed fuel system, which eliminates spills.

Most recently, we’ve also seen a movement away from corded equipment. More brands that were once electric-only are now offering engine-driven solutions, mostly powered by propane, though some are considering batteries and even hybrid options. This is in addition to the trend over the past couple years of manufacturers exploring options beyond diesel for light construction equipment.

Q: What will most impact propane construction equipment use this year?

A: Several events from the past two years are likely to influence growth for propane equipment sales and rentals. For example, the high gasoline prices of last summer left a lasting memory with many

construction professionals, and forecasts are calling for gas prices to approach $3 per gallon at the height of the summer work season again. Because of this, construction professionals will continue looking for other options to power their light construction equipment.

Additionally, more construction professionals are turning to fuels that offer more resiliency. With weather events becoming more unpredictable and debilitating to regions year-round, fuels like propane that are portable, don’t degrade in storage, aren’t vulnerable to electric outages, and have well-established supply chains are attractive.

Q: With gas prices lower right now, will contractors see an advantage by using propane?

A: The current low gas prices might look good for the short term, but contractors who want long-term cost solutions (and to avoid the predicted rise in gas prices this coming summer) will find that propane offers several advantages.

For starters, propane is a product of both

Featured natural gas and petroleum, and the price for propane falls between the price of the two other fuels.

Additionally, the majority of the propane supply used in the United States is produced in North America, providing cost stability even when global fuel markets fluctuate. Because of these factors, propane is consistently less expensive than gasoline, even when the price of gasoline is low.

Outside of the price per gallon, propane’s refueling options can really push a construction company’s jobsite productivity to the next level, as well. Permanent infrastructure can be installed at a contractor’s facilities, but contractors can also work with a propane retailer to set up a portable propane tank on a long-term jobsite.

Setting up a cylinder exchange program with a propane retailer to exchange empty cylinders with full ones can reduce equipment downtime and eliminate wait time at refueling stations by giving employees a hassle-free, grab-and-go system. And propane won’t deteriorate if kept in storage, no matter the length of time.

Q: Are there any new propane products that will come out in 2019?

A: There are several research and development projects in progress at PERC to make propane engines even more efficient and applicable for use in new equipment, that we’ll hopefully be able to release later this year.

But in the meantime, contractors may not realize the full extent of which construction equipment can currently use propane.

In addition to power generation, jobsite heating, and jobsite lighting; propane can be used to efficiently move materials across sites with forklifts or wheel buggies, or with aerial lifts for multi-story projects and rooftop work. Concrete finishing equipment including riding trowels, grinders, polishers, floor strippers, and concrete saws can also be powered by propane.

Q: What’s the future of propane with the advancement of battery-powered equipment?

A: There are plenty of great things about battery-powered equipment — the tools produce no emissions during use and batteries for handheld tools are

increasingly becoming lighter. But when you consider site-to-source emissions, propane is responsible for far fewer sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions than electricity, with nearly 30 percent of the U.S. still relying on coal-fired generators for electricity, according to the Energy Information Administration.

For larger equipment like skid steers and lifts, too, batteries are still heavy and expensive, and the requirements for charging aren’t always available on a jobsite. By comparison, propane is widely available and refueling infrastructure can even be installed on sites without electricity.

Q: How does a company get started with propane if it thinks the fuel might be a fit for its operations?

H.T. Nichols, 90, father of former TPGA President Tom Nichols, passed away on March 26, 2019. Mr. Nichols began his career in the propane industry in 1964 when he went to work for Elmer Atkins (Atkins Butane) as a delivery driver. Pargas purchased Atkins Butane and kept Mr. Nichols on as a delivery driver. Pargas purchased Norgas and promoted Mr. Nichols to District Manager in 1972. In 1979 Mr. Nichols took early retirement from Pargas and in 1980 started Nichols LP Gas and Wrecker Service out of his home in Clifton, TX. In 1990 he completely retired and in 1994 sold the business to his children. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time.

Brenda Barfield Slater, 62, of New Boston passed away on March 27.

She was the manager of Barfield Propane Company. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time.

Atticus Miller, 31, of Paris, Texas, passed away suddenly April 8, 2019.

Mr. Miller was the CEO of Cooper Propane, Red River Transport and Delta Logistics, and was chairman of the board at First National Bank of Cooper. Atticus obtained his Order of Eagle Scout rank from the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from the IMG Academy of Golf in Bradenton, FL after graduating high school. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in business from Trinity University and studied abroad at La Universidad Pablo De Olavide in Seville, Spain. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, water skier and snow boarder. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time.

Member Talk: DOT Audit

I had a surprise DOT auditor show up at Buster Brown. This visit was a follow up on citations that had been issued previously to two of the companies that we had purchased.

The auditor had gone to the other two locations first and of course that brought them to Buster Brown. Like Danny Meyers of Bellville Butane (previously featured in magazine) I was concerned at first but after the auditor gave me a list of everything she wanted to have copies of I felt more confident. Our auditor was very professional and nice.

A lot of questions, paperwork and two hours later the auditor left. The auditor said that I was very organized and it made her job easier when they could come in sit down and get the paperwork they asked for. Our auditor also left with “no probable violations noted”.

The Association is responsible for another successful DOT audit with their ability to keep marketers up to date through the weekly messenger, monthly magazines and informative meetings.

Propane With Purpose

Hussmann Debuts Self-contained Propane Cases that also connect to the waterloop system.

To complete an entire store, air-cooled, self-contained propane merchandisers are used.

Tim Figge, CEO of Hussmann (a subsidiary of Panasonic), said microDS represents “an excellent option for customers to use natural refrigerants with lower installation costs and increased merchandising visibility.”

Hussmann, a St. Louis, Mo.- based manufacturer of refrigeration equipment for the food retail industry, has unveiled a new completestore refrigeration system based on self-contained display cases that employ environmentally safe propane (R290).

The new line, called microDS, encompasses low- and medium-temperature merchandisers suitable across a wide range of supercenter, dollar, convenience and drug stores.

In this new offering, Hussmann joins the growing North American market for self-contained hydrocarbon cases and refrigerator/freezers supplied by such OEMs as AHT, True Manufacturing, MTL Cool and QBD Cooling Systems.

While many stores are using self-contained cases from these companies as spot merchandisers to complement remote systems, not many are employing them on a full-store basis, which Hussmann is supporting with the microDS line.

Hussmann has installed the new propane units in several grocery stores operated by multiple retailers (who could not be named without their permission), said Richard Gilles, senior product leader for Hussmann’s Distributed Systems Group, adding, “A lot more are planned for 2019.”

So far, the units are being used in mid-sized stores (about 35,000 sq ft), though the system’s scalability makes it suitable for larger or smaller stores as well, he said.

The self-contained cases utilize circuits charged with up to 150 g, or just 5.3 oz, of propane -- slightly more than a half-cup. One circuit serves up to three doors of a reach-in lineup and four feet of an open multi-deck configuration, said Gilles.

The small amount of propane used in the microDS full-store system is 90% to 95% less refrigerant than typically required in remote refrigeration systems using HFCs.

The merchandisers in the microDS line include full-sized grocery cases – such as five-door reach-ins and open multidecks up to 12-ft long.

Propane also has a negligible GWP (three), compared to that of commonly used HFC refrigerants with GWPs exceeding 1,300. This makes the system virtually “future-proof” – not subject to evolving state and federal environmental regulations, said Gilles.

Waste heat from the cases is withdrawn by a closed water loop with water-inlet temperatures up to 115ºF, which is cooled by a roof-mounted dry fluid cooler. Walk-in coolers and freezers utilize propane units
